- Sleepers who prefer a balance of body-conforming and support. The T&N Mattress has a polyfoam comfort layer that conforms to the sleeper’s body while also remaining fairly responsive, resulting in a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.
- People who weigh 130 to 230 pounds. The T&N Mattress has received a positive response from sleepers with different body types, but the most favorable ratings have come from those in the average weight group.
- Couples. Thanks to very good motion isolation and no noise when bearing weight, the T&N Mattress is suitable for anyone who experiences sleep disturbances due to their partner’s movements in bed.
- Those who normally sleep hot on all-foam beds. The T&N Mattress has a low-density comfort layer that absorbs less body heat and sleeps cooler than the higher-density layers found in other foam mattresses.
- Value seekers. The T&N Mattress has a very reasonable price-point compared to other similarly constructed models.
Not Recommended for...
- Sleepers who prefer highly responsive mattresses. The T&N Mattress has some bounce due to its polyfoam construction, but it lacks the signature springiness of innerspring and hybrid models with coil-based support systems.

How Is the T&N Mattress Constructed?
Cover
The T&N Mattress has a knit cover made from a blend of polyester and polyamide. The fabric has a soft, breathable feel. If stains occur, Tuft & Needle recommends spot-cleaning with cool or tepid water and mild detergent.
Comfort Layers
The mattress has a 3-inch comfort layer of 2.8 PCF polyfoam. This material is considered low-density, meaning it absorbs less body heat and sleeps cooler than higher-density foam. However, low-density polyfoam is also less durable over time.
The comfort layer is also infused with cooling gel and graphite. These components are intended to make the surface more breathable and temperature-neutral.
Support Layers
The T&N Mattress has a 7-inch support core consisting of 1.8 PCF high-density polyfoam. This dense base layer stabilizes the bed to maintain an even plane for sleepers and prevent excessive sagging. However, our testing shows the support core provides minimal reinforcement around the perimeter of the bed. Check out our ‘Edge Support’ breakdown below for more details.
Mattress Height
The T&N Mattress measures 10 inches thick, making it a medium-profile model. The support core is fairly thick, and the bed does not include a transitional layer between the comfort and base layers. As a result, the surface has a medium-firm feel. The foam will conform to the body, but sleepers do not experience deep sinking.
Product Name | Firmness Options | Thickness | Support Core Components | Comfort Layer Components | Cover Components |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
T&N Mattress | Medium-firm (6.5) | 10″ | 7″ 1.8 PCF HD Polyfoam | 3″ 2.8 PCF Gel- and Graphite-infused Polyfoam | Polyester and Polyamide Blend |
What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?
The T&N Mattress is considered medium-firm. The low-density polyfoam comfort layer cushions the body without letting it sink too deeply. As a result, the mattress conforms to the sleeper, but they won’t experience the pressure-relieving body cradle associated with memory foam beds. The high-density base adds further stability, and helps reinforce the bed’s medium-firm feel.
Polyfoam also has a noticeable bounce compared to memory foam, which responds more slowly to the sleeper’s body. This added responsiveness, coupled with the medium-firm surface, creates a combined feeling of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.
Ratings Breakdown
Performance Ratings
Next, let’s take an in-depth look at our performance ratings for the T&N Mattress. Each rating is based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, along with experiences from verified mattress owners.
Durability
Based on owner experiences, the T&N Mattress has an expected lifespan of about six and a half years. This is on par with the average all-polyfoam mattress. Medium-firm beds like the T&N Mattress are less prone to excessive sagging than those with softer settings. However, the comfort layer material has a relatively low density and may deteriorate more quickly compared to medium- or high-density foam.
Over time, this deterioration can cause the sleep surface to lose its shape and develop body impressions, which in turn make the mattress feel uneven and less supportive. Mattress owners can minimize the risk of excessive sagging and deep body impressions by rotating the bed head-to-foot every three to six months.
Motion Isolation
To evaluate the T&N Mattress for motion isolation, we asked two of our internal testers to lie down side-by-side on the mattress. One tester moved around while the other felt for their motion transferring across the surface. The T&N Mattress demonstrated very good motion isolation during these tests, as both testers noticed very little transfer. These findings are consistent with feedback from our external testers who sleep with a partner, as well as reviews from verified owners.
Memory foam beds generally offer the best motion isolation because they lack the responsiveness of latex, innerspring, and hybrid models. Polyfoam mattresses like the T&N Mattress also isolate motion very well, but most cannot completely eliminate transfer because the material is more responsive than memory foam.
Off-Gassing
We noticed some initial off-gassing odor when unboxing the T&N Mattress. When we re-evaluated the mattress a few days later, most of the odor had dissipated, but a faint smell remained. Owner experiences suggest long-term off-gassing is not a major issue, but for the first few days there will probably be a noticeable odor.
All mattresses emit off-gassing when new, but those with polyfoam and/or memory foam layers tend to produce the strongest and longest-lasting smells. That said, most beds lose their odor in a matter of days, and very few models are associated with persistent off-gassing.
Pressure Relief
To evaluate the T&N Mattress for pressure relief, our testers took turns lying on a sensory pad that measures pressure build-up in sensitive areas of the body, namely the shoulders and hips. They also shifted sleep positions to see if pressure increased or decreased when lying on their sides, back, or stomach.
Overall, the T&N Mattress alleviated pressure very well for sleepers across different weight and sleep position groups, but our testers weighing at least 130 pounds reported the best results. Those in the lightweight group felt a bit of added pressure around the shoulders. This is likely due to the bed’s medium-firm setting, since lighter people tend to experience more pressure relief on softer mattresses.
Temperature Neutrality
The T&N Mattress exhibited good temperature neutrality throughout our assessments. Polyfoam tends to trap body heat and sleep somewhat warm. Nonetheless, the T&N Mattress has a low-density comfort layer that does not absorb as much body heat as foams with higher densities. As a result, the mattress sleeps noticeably cooler than many of its all-foam competitors.
Edge Support
To evaluate the T&N Mattress for edge support, our testers sat along the perimeter of the mattress as an owner might do when getting in and out of bed. All of our testers felt at least some sinkage, with the heaviest individuals experiencing the most. The testers also took turns lying near the edges of the mattress to check for feelings of “roll-off.” They felt relatively secure, but noticed more sinkage when shifting positions.
All-foam models like the T&N Mattress often lack the edge support of innerspring and hybrid beds. This is due to the high-density polyfoam base, which stabilizes the bed fairly well but cannot provide the same reinforcement as a coil support system. Owners of the T&N Mattress should expect deep sinkage to occur over time.
Noise
During our testing, the T&N Mattress was virtually silent when bearing weight. This is a common characteristic of all-foam models because they lack internal components associated with disruptive noises, such as the coils found in innersprings and hybrids, or the motorized air chambers in airbeds.
The bed’s lack of noise, coupled with its very good motion isolation, makes it a great option for people who awaken easily due to their co-sleeper’s movements.
Sex
The T&N Mattress is somewhat responsive, but it lacks the springiness of innerspring and hybrid mattresses. Couples may sink too deeply during sex as a result. Although this sinkage can provide decent traction, it prevents couples from using the entire surface of the bed and can also create difficulty when changing positions.
Sleeper Ratings
The ideal firmness and thickness settings for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, we evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.
Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.
Our lightweight testers gave the T&N Mattress good overall ratings. Regardless of sleep position, sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds noted adequate cushioning for the shoulders and hips, and a decent balance of body-conforming and support. However, testers in this weight group found the mattress a bit too firm.
Lightweight sleepers generally prefer mattresses with soft to medium-soft surfaces. Firmer beds like the T&N Mattress do not conform as closely, and this can minimize pressure relief for people weighing less than 130 pounds.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.
The best ratings for the T&N Mattress came from testers in the average weight group. The comfort layer offered ample cushioning for side sleepers, who reported even spinal alignment with little to no pressure in the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers – and, to a slightly lesser extent, stomach sleepers – found the mattress very supportive and did not experience very much sagging in the midsection.
Sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds typically prefer medium-soft to medium-firm mattresses because they provide a good balance of body-conforming and support. Softer mattresses tend to sink too deeply, whereas firmer beds may not conform enough.
Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.
T&N Mattress ratings from our heavyweight testers were mixed. Back and stomach sleepers noted good overall support, despite some moderate sagging around the waist. Side sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds were not as comfortable. The comfort layer sagged a bit too deeply beneath their shoulders and hips, which negatively affected their spinal alignment.
Heavyweight sleepers normally prefer medium-firm to firm mattresses with robust support systems. Softer and less supportive beds tend to sink too much, which can cause major discomfort issues. The T&N Mattress has a medium-firm feel, but its base polyfoam may not be strong enough to support some sleepers in this weight group – side sleepers in particular.

How Does Tuft & Needle Compare to Other Beds?
We encourage all mattress shoppers to browse different brands and models in order to find the most suitable option. In this next section, we’ll see how the T&N Mattress compares to other Tuft & Needle beds and some similar mattresses from competing brands.
T&N Mattress vs. Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress
The Mint Mattress is Tuft & Needle’s other all-foam model. Measuring 12 inches thick, the mattress is constructed with a gel- and graphite-infused polyfoam comfort layer as well as a 2-inch transitional layer above the support core.
This additional component causes the Mint Mattress to feel slightly softer and alleviate a bit more pressure on the sleeper than the T&N Mattress. Apart from these differences, the mattresses are very similar. Both models offer comparable temperature neutrality due to their lower-density comfort layers. Other common attributes include very good motion isolation, no noise when bearing weight, and edges that are prone to significant sinkage.
The Mint Mattress is more expensive, but both models are considered high-value picks due to their low price-points. Shoppers who are lighter may want to consider the Mint Mattress due to its softer setting, but the T&N and Mint Mattresses have earned nearly identical ratings across most performance categories.

T&N Mattress vs. T&N Hybrid
The T&N Hybrid features a coil-on-coil design with a minicoil comfort layer and a pocketed coil support core. These components make the mattress very responsive. Strong airflow through the coil layers also ensures very good temperature neutrality for the T&N Hybrid.
Due to its springier surface, the T&N Hybrid does not isolate motion transfer as well as the T&N Mattress. The latter model also provides better pressure relief. However, the T&N Hybrid’s coil support core offers much better reinforcement to the edges, resulting in less sinkage. Couples are also more likely to prefer the T&N Hybrid for sex.
Although the T&N Hybrid has the higher price-point, it is considered fairly inexpensive compared to other hybrid models. Shoppers who enjoy the responsive feel of a coil-on-coil mattress should opt for the T&N Hybrid, while the T&N Mattress is better suited to those who enjoy more body-conforming and motion isolation.

T&N Mattress vs. The Allswell
The Allswell Mattress is a memory foam hybrid mattress. Like the T&N Mattress, the Allswell Mattress has a 10-inch profile and a medium-firm (6.5) feel, but its pocketed coils provide stronger support for heavier individuals. The T&N Mattress, on the other hand, conforms more closely and alleviates more pressure for lighter individuals.
There are other notable differences, as well. The Allswell Mattress excels at temperature neutrality thanks to strong airflow through its coil layer. The support core is also zoned, with thicker coils reinforcing the edges to minimize sinkage. The T&N Mattress performs better in other areas, such as motion isolation and noise potential.
Both models have reasonable price-points. Shoppers should base their decision on which type of mattress they prefer, whether it’s a more supportive and responsive hybrid model, or an all-foam bed that conforms more closely and isolates more motion.

T&N Mattress vs. Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Hybrid
The Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Hybrid is constructed with a polyfoam comfort layer and pocketed coil support core. Like the T&N Mattress, the Bowery Hybrid has a medium-firm (6.5) feel and a 10-inch profile.
Due to its hybrid construction, the mattress has a more responsive feel than the T&N Mattress and sleeps noticeably cooler due to strong airflow in the coil layer. Edge support is also much stronger for the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Hybrid, so owners should experience less sinkage when sitting along the perimeter. The T&N Mattress isolates more motion transfer, and alleviates more pressure for sleepers.
Both models are fairly low-priced. Customers who prefer springier mattresses – as well as hot sleepers – will likely feel more comfortable on the Brooklyn Bedding Bowery Hybrid, while the T&N Mattress is more suitable for couples and people with pressure point issues.

T&N Mattress vs. Casper
The Casper Mattress is a mixed-foam mattress built with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers. The mattress has a medium (5) feel, making it noticeably softer than the T&N Mattress, but both models provide very good pressure relief.
The Casper Mattress has a light bounce due to its top polyfoam layer, but the memory foam makes it less responsive than the T&N Mattress. As a result, the Casper Mattress isolates more motion transfer – though both models perform very well in this category.
Other similarities between the two beds include fair edge support and above-average temperature neutrality.
The Casper Mattress costs more than the T&N Mattress, but both models are reasonably priced. People who enjoy a more traditional memory foam feel will probably prefer the Casper Mattress, while the T&N Mattress is a better option for those who like more responsive foam mattresses. In other performance categories, these mattresses have earned comparable ratings. To learn more, check out our full T&N Mattress vs. Nectar Comparison.
T&N Mattress vs. Nectar
The Nectar Mattress is made with three layers of memory foam over a high-density polyfoam base. Sleepers experience a deep, pressure-relieving body cradle akin to sleeping “in” – as opposed to “on” – the mattress. This differs from the T&N Mattress, which creates a combination of sleeping “in” and sleeping “on” the surface.
Both mattresses are medium-firm and offer very good pressure relief. The Nectar Mattress isolates more motion transfer than the T&N Mattress, but each model also performs reasonably well in this category. Additionally, both mattresses contain lower-density comfort layers that absorb a minimal amount of body heat. As a result, they offer better-than-average temperature neutrality compared to other all-foam models.
Like the T&N Mattress, the Nectar Mattress has an exceptionally low price-point. People who prefer the body-hugging sensation of memory foam should consider the Nectar Mattress, while the T&N Mattress is a good option for those who want less conforming and more responsiveness. To learn more, check out our full T&N Mattress vs. Casper Comparison.
T&N Mattress vs. Purple
The Purple mattress is an all-foam mattress with a unique construction. The base is composed of two different layers of polyfoam, while the top is two inches of Purple’s hyper-elastic polymer material formed into a grid pattern known as the Purple Grid. The Purple has a Medium Firm (6.5) feel like the T&N Mattress, but with a profile of 9.25 inches.
The Purple mattress sleeps exceptionally cool due to its unique Purple Grid design, which allows for a great deal of air to flow through the bed. The T&N Mattress has a bit more bounce and pushback, giving it a little less sink and making it easier to move around on top of. Both models do a great job of isolating motion and relieving pressure.
The T&N mattress is available at a lower price-point than the Purple, although both models have relatively accessible prices. Hot sleepers who need airflow and those who prioritize a softer feel will likely appreciate the Purple mattress, while back sleepers and light to averageweight stomach sleepers should prefer the T&N mattress. The two rank similarly in most other categories of mattress performance. Read our full T&N Mattress vs. Purple Comparison for more details.
