Sleep Position Ratings

The Purple Mattress

The Purple Mattress’ ‘Medium Firm’ feel and moderate conforming are optimal for sleepers in any position who weigh at least 130 pounds; the mattress may feel excessively firm for those weighing less than 130 pounds. The mattress is comparable to foam and latex beds in terms of above-average motion isolation and no noise when bearing weight; it also sleeps considerably cooler due to strong airflow throughout the Smart Grid.

The Nectar Mattress

Due to its ‘Medium Firm’ (6.5) feel, the Nectar Mattress has earned the best sleeper ratings from side, back, and stomach sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds; those weighing less than 130 pounds may find the mattress too firm. Comparatively, many sleepers – particularly heavier individuals and stomach sleepers – often find memory foam mattresses too soft. The Nectar Mattress has also earned strong ratings for motion isolation and noise; it sleeps cooler than other all-foam beds due to its breathable cover and gel memory foam layers, as well.

  • You and/or your sleep partner awaken easily due to noise or movement
  • You usually sleep hot on foam mattresses

Now let’s see how these mattresses are made. The next table lists firmness, thickness, weight, and composition specs for the Purple and Nectar Mattress models.

How Is the Purple Mattress Built?

The Purple Mattress is constructed with Purple’s signature ‘Smart Grid’ comfort layer, which features buckling-column gel dispersed over an elastic polymer grid. This material conforms to the sleeper’s body for improved spinal alignment and pressure relief – much like memory foam or latex – but the grid is less susceptible to sagging and degradation. Additional layers of 1.8 PCF transitional polyfoam and 2 PCF high-density polyfoam offer solid reinforcement.

The Purple Mattress is ‘Medium Firm,’ or a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. It weighs 110 pounds in a queen size, making it much heavier than the average mattress and relatively difficult to lift and rotate for many owners.

How Is the Nectar Mattress Built?

The Nectar Mattress has a 3-inch gel memory foam comfort layer followed by a 2-inch polyfoam transitional layer. These foam components offer moderate body conforming and a ‘Medium Firm’ feel that is optimal for sleepers who are considered average weight (130 to 230 pounds) or heavy (more than 230 pounds).

The mattress also has a 7-inch base layer of high-density polyfoam. This thick, durable foam layer reinforces the entire bed to provide even support for sleepers and minimize sinkage around the edges. A queen-size Nectar Mattress weighs 74 pounds, which is light even by foam bed standards, making the mattress relatively easy to lift and rotate as recommended.
