Loom & Leaf Mattress Review

Written by Tuck Staff

Loom & Leaf Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • Several layers of contouring memory foam reduce pressure points under the hips and shoulders in side sleepers.
  • Memory foam limits motion transfer when sharing the bed.
  • With two firmness options to choose from, the Loom & Leaf Mattress caters to a wide variety of body types and sleeping styles.

Loom & Leaf Mattress Overview

Loom & Leaf Mattress Overview

The Loom & Leaf mattress was developed by Saatva, an online mattress company that first became known for its innerspring mattress. Unlike most mattresses sold online, the Loom & Leaf mattress is not compressed for shipping. Each mattress is delivered to the room of your choice with complimentary White Glove delivery service and old mattress removal.

The Loom & Leaf is an all-foam mattress that stands at 12 inches tall and comes in two firmness options, Relaxed Firm and Firm, which correspond to a 5.5 (medium) and 8 (firm) on the 1-10 firmness scale.

A 2-inch layer of convoluted gel memory foam and another 2.5-inch layer of memory foam with a higher concentration of gel in the center to provide targeted relief for pressure points. In the support core, 2 inches of polyfoam and 5.5 inches of high-density polyfoam help keep your body properly aligned. The mattress cover is made of soft organic cotton and quilted with a bit of extra foam for added plushness.

This full review of the Loom & Leaf mattress will cover important details including construction, materials, firmness, and feel, as well as ratings and recommendations from our sleep team. To help illustrate how the Loom & Leaf stacks up against the competition, we’ll also compare it to some other similar mattresses on the market. We’ll end with an overview of practical details including shipping, sleep trial, and warranty policies.

  • Side sleepers. Side sleepers do best with a mattress that will alleviate pressure points under the hips and shoulders, and the memory foam in the Loom & Leaf mattress excels at this.
  • Lightweight and average weight sleepers. The combination of memory foam and firmer support foams provides the perfect balance of pressure relief and cradling support for lightweight and average weight sleepers.
  • People who share the bed. The Loom & Leaf mattress is quiet and has above-average motion isolation, which reduces partner disruptions while sleeping.

Not Recommended for...

  • Combination sleepers. The Loom & Leaf mattress has 4 inches of memory foam, with a slow response to pressure that will make it difficult to change positions while sleeping.
  • People who sleep hot. Despite its cooling features, the Loom & Leaf mattress has a tendency to trap heat due to the closely conforming memory foam in the comfort layers.

Tuck's Video Review

Our team carried out a series of tests to see how the Loom & Leaf performed on metrics like motion transfer, edge support, and temperature regulation. Watch the video to get an idea of what it’s like to sleep on the Loom & Leaf, or keep reading for a comprehensive review.

Ratings Summary

Tuck’s testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Loom & Leaf Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, overnight sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

As we expected from an all-foam mattress, the Loom & Leaf provided above-average pressure relief and motion isolation, but it lacked resilience and the foams retained some heat. Click here to jump to a more detailed breakdown of each category.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Loom & Leaf Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

How Is the Loom & Leaf Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Loom & Leaf mattress has an organic cotton cover that provides a soft, breathable sleeping surface. The cover is coated with antimicrobial treatment and quilted with 5/8 inch of foam for a bit of cushioning as you first lie down.

Instead of using flame-retardant chemicals, the Loom & Leaf features a natural thistle flame retardant layer which is ideal for people who seek out natural materials but wish to avoid animal products like wool.

Comfort Layers

Both firmness options include two layers of medium-density memory foam to provide close contouring and pressure relief. The first is a 2-inch layer of 4 PCF convoluted memory foam laminated with cooling gel that’s infused with a phase change material designed to pull heat away from the sleeper.

This layer is thoughtfully designed with more gel in the center of the mattress to provide lumbar support and targeted relief for pressure points. This is followed by a 2.5-inch layer of 5 PCF memory foam which provides a deep cradle, especially for heavier individuals.

Support Layers

The top layer of the support core consists of 2 inches of polyfoam with a density of 1.6 PCF, which is considered high-density and will be quite durable. Underneath this is a 5.5-inch layer of high-density polyfoam with a density of 1.8 PCF. The foams used in the support layers are on par with competing all-foam mattresses and should provide adequate support for most body types.

Mattress Height

The Loom & Leaf mattress measures 12 inches in total, which is slightly taller than many of its competitors. The thicker profile may make it easier for some individuals to get in and out of bed.

Product Name Firmness Thickness Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Loom & Leaf mattress comes in two firmness options, Relaxed Firm and Firm. The company describes these as a 5-7 and an 8, respectively, on the 1 to 10 firmness scale. Our testers found them to correspond to a 5.5 and an 8 on the firmness scale. While both versions feature the same foam layers, the Firm model features a slightly firmer polyfoam in the top 2-inch support layer.

As an all-foam mattress with memory foam in the comfort layers, the Loom & Leaf gives the experience of sleeping in, not on, the mattress. As you sink further into the mattress, the comfort layers form a cradle that conforms closely to relieve pressure points and the polyfoam layers in the support core offer stability that promotes proper spinal alignment.

The Relaxed Firm version will offer even closer conforming and a slower response to pressure. While the extreme contouring of the memory foam is ideal for alleviating pressure points in side sleepers, combination sleepers may find it limits their ability to adjust sleeping positions. Heavier stomach and back sleepers will prefer the Firm model, which will provide better support under the hips to help keep the spine aligned.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Loom & Leaf Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as reviews from verified mattress owners.

Durability

Since Loom & Leaf has only been around for several years, there isn’t sufficient data to accurately assess the long-term durability of the mattress. Comfort layers are usually the first to deteriorate, and memory foam mattresses tend to break down quicker than most other types.

That being said, the Loom & Leaf mattress is made with high-quality foams and we expect it to have an above-average lifespan. After some time, the foam may develop body indentations, especially in the case of heavier individuals. Rotating the mattress every few months will help increase its lifespan.

Motion Isolation

Our sleep testers found that the mattress did a good job of minimizing motion transfer, and people who share the bed with a sleeping partner should find that movements from one person won’t disturb the other. This is typical of memory foam, which has a slow response to movement and is able to conform locally. This helps it absorb movement and prevents it from transferring to the other side of the bed.

Off-Gassing

We found that there was a smell when the bed first arrived, but it dissipated completely within the first few days and shouldn’t pose a problem for most sleepers. It’s common for memory foam and polyfoam mattresses to emit some off-gassing odors during the first few days after unwrapping.

While the Loom & Leaf is not compressed or shrink-wrapped for shipping, it will still produce some off-gassing odors due to the densities and types of foams used in the mattress. All the foams are CertiPUR-US certified, which guarantees them to be low in volatile organic compound emissions (VOCs).

Pressure Relief

Our internal testing team found that the Loom & Leaf mattress provided excellent pressure relief across different body types and sleeping positions. The Euro-top provides a plush sleeping surface, while the memory foam conforms closely to eliminate most pressure points. Sleepers will sink into the comfort layers of the mattress, but the support core provides a firm surface beneath that gives stability for proper spinal alignment.

The Loom & Leaf mattress also features enhanced lumbar support, with a higher concentration of gel in the center of the top layer of memory foam that prevents the hips from sinking in too far. Side sleepers may feel some discomfort under the hips and shoulders as the memory foam takes a few seconds to adjust to their body shape, but this shouldn’t be an issue for people who don’t move very much in their sleep.

Because of its slow response to pressure, the mattress is not ideal for combination sleepers.

Temperature Neutrality

Due to its close conforming and natural tendency to trap heat, memory foam is generally not the best choice for people who sleep warm. Sleepers on our testing team found that despite the breathable cotton cover and cooling gel infusions, the dense memory foams in the Loom & Leaf mattress still retained some heat. This was especially noticeable in heavier-weight sleepers and in the Relaxed Firm model of the mattress.

As sleepers sank in further, this caused restricted airflow around the body and prevented heat from escaping. While the Loom & Leaf doesn’t retain as much heat as many competing all-foam beds, we would advise people who sleep hot to consider a hybrid mattress instead.

Edge Support

Surprisingly, our testing team found that edge support in the Loom & Leaf mattress was acceptable for sleeping on or near the edge of the bed. In contrast to many foam mattresses, people who share the bed should find that they are able to use the entire surface area of the Loom & Leaf mattress without feeling like they are falling off the edges.

However, we did find that the top layers of foam compressed noticeably when sitting on the edge of the bed, which was especially noticeable among our heavier weight sleepers. This may be a problem for people who rely on the edges to support their weight when getting in and out of bed. Heavier individuals will find that the Firm version of the mattress should provide better edge support.

Noise

As expected, our testers found that the Loom & Leaf mattress made hardly any sound at all when bearing weight. All-foam mattresses don’t tend to produce the creaks and squeaks you might expect from an innerspring mattress. This makes them a good choice for people who share the bed with someone who is easily awakened by sound.

Sex

Our sleep testers rated the Loom & Leaf mattress below-average for sex. While the mattress has decent edge support for a memory foam mattress and will remain silent during sex, the memory foam’s slow response to pressure inhibits movement. Most people tend to prefer a bouncier mattress for sex.

Sleeper Ratings

Now, it’s time to look at how our testing team rated the Loom & Leaf mattress. Since each person interacts differently with a mattress depending on body type and preferred sleep position, we had sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences evaluate the Loom & Leaf mattress.

This method helps us avoid subjectivity in our review, and gives you a better idea of how the firmness and comfort levels vary across different sleeper profiles.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Lightweight sleepers don’t exert as much pressure on a mattress and will usually find a mattress to be firmer than heavier weight sleepers. In this case, the Loom & Leaf mattress provides a plush sleeping surface that will appeal to lightweight sleepers of all sleeping positions, contouring to reduce pressure points in side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers alike.

Lightweight stomach sleepers in particular will find that the Euro-top cover provides just the right amount of pushback to keep the hips from sinking in too far, leading to the sensation of floating on top of the bed.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Thanks to the plush memory foam and supportive polyfoam layers, the Loom & Leaf ensures an ideal balance of pressure relief and spinal support for average weight sleepers in all sleeping positions.

The Relaxed Firm model will provide more sink for individuals who prefer the feeling of sleeping in, as opposed to on, the mattress. In contrast, stomach sleepers and some back sleepers may prefer the Firm version, which does a better job of supporting the hips.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

As with lighter-weight sleepers, heavy individuals who sleep on their side should find that the Loom & Leaf mattress provides a close pressure-relieving cradle that eliminates potential sore spots under the hips and shoulders.

The Loom & Leaf contains a higher concentration of gel in the center of the mattress, but back and stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may find that the mattress is a little lacking in support under the hips.

Usually heavier-weight individuals receive more adequate support from coils. However, the high-quality foams and solid construction make this an option for heavier individuals looking for the feel of an all-foam bed.

How Does the Loom & Leaf Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

In the following section we’ve lined up some of the major differences between the Loom & Leaf mattress vs. its closest competitors, so you can get a better idea of how it compares to other models.

Loom & Leaf vs. Saatva Mattress

The Saatva mattress is a coil-on-coil innerspring mattress with a quilted Euro-top cover and comfort layers of polyfoam, memory foam, and pocketed coils. The support core contains either Bonnell coils. The mattress comes in medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7.5) firmness levels, as well as two profile options: 11.5 inches or 14.5 inches.

The Loom & Leaf gives the quintessential “hug” feeling of traditional memory foam, while the Saatva provides the bouncier surface of an innerspring mattress. Side sleepers will prefer the above-average contouring of the Loom & Leaf.

As an innerspring mattress, the Saatva provides better edge support and temperature regulation, with plenty of airflow through the coil layers. However, the Loom & Leaf has the advantage in terms of noise and motion isolation, as the coils in the Saatva will transfer motion across the bed.

Both mattresses offer several firmness options, but the Saatva is considerably cheaper. For more on how these two models stack up against each other, check out our full Loom & Leaf vs. Saatva Comparison.

Loom & Leaf vs. Saatva HD

With its 15.5-inch profile and sturdy support core, the Saatva HD hybrid mattress caters to individuals who weigh between 300 and 500 pounds. The mattresses’s comfort layers include zoned Talalay latex, as well as memory foam and polyfoam. The Saatva HD features a support core of offset coils with reinforced edge support.

Individuals who share the bed will find that the all-foam Loom & Leaf has superior motion isolation, which means fewer disturbances from their partner. In turn, the Saatva HD will provide a cooler sleeping experience than the Loom & Leaf thanks to the airflow through the coil layers. The Saatva HD’s reinforced edge support and higher profile also make this a better option for people who have trouble getting in and out of bed.

The Saatva HD only comes in one firmness level, a 7 out of 10, or “firm.” The mattress is meant for heavier individuals and will be too firm for most lightweight sleepers. While the Saatva HD represents a significant financial investment compared to the Loom & Leaf, it is a worthy option for individuals who need more support.

Loom & Leaf vs. Zenhaven

The 10-inch tall Zenhaven mattress is a flippable latex mattress that allows customers to choose from two firmness levels: medium-soft (4) and firm (7). The cover is made of organic cotton, with a layer of organic wool as a fire retardant.

The latex used in the Zenhaven is bouncier than memory foam and will offer the springiness most couples prefer for sex. However, people who share a bed should consider that the Zenhaven does not provide much edge support, leading to the feeling of rolling off the edges and limiting the amount of usable sleeping surface.

The Zenhaven offers better temperature regulation and durability than memory foam. Both mattresses will offer relief from pressure points, although the Loom & Leaf offers slightly closer contouring and better motion isolation. Both mattresses are exceptionally quiet.

The Zenhaven mattress performs well across sleeper types and sleeping positions but is best suited to average-weight individuals and back sleepers due to its balance between support and pressure relief. For more on how these two models stack up against each other, check out our full Loom & Leaf vs. Zenhaven Comparison.

Loom & Leaf vs. The Casper

Like the Loom & Leaf, the Casper mattress is an all-foam mattress with excellent motion isolation and pressure relief. In terms of firmness, it’s comparable to the relaxed firm version of the Loom & Leaf mattress, ranking around a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

The Casper offers slightly less conforming than the Loom & Leaf due to a top polyfoam comfort layer, but its zoned support system helps distribute weight and provide targeted relief from pressure points. Like most all-foam mattresses, the Casper and the Loom & Leaf are both extremely quiet.

Both mattresses suffer from below-average edge support and some heat retention, although the Casper slightly outperforms the Loom & Leaf on temperature regulation. Neither is optimal for sex, due to the slow recovery of memory foam.

The Casper mattress is ideally suited to lightweight and side sleepers, but is not quite firm enough for heavier individuals, who will find better support in the firm version of the Loom & Leaf mattress. For more on how these two models stack up against each other, check out our full Loom & Leaf vs. Casper Comparison.

Loom & Leaf vs. Leesa

The original Leesa mattress is an all-foam bed with comfort layers of polyfoam and memory foam and a support core of high-density polyfoam. The mattress comes in one firmness level, a 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

Being an all-foam mattress like the Loom & Leaf, Leesa shares the same advantages: quiet, above-average motion isolation, and closely conforming pressure relief. Similarly, the Leesa is lacking in edge support and responsiveness and may trap too much heat for people who tend to sleep hot.

Lightweight sleepers should find a good balance of support and pressure relief on both the Leesa and the Loom & Leaf. Sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds, especially stomach sleepers, will be more comfortable on the firm version of the Loom & Leaf. For more on how these two models stack up against each other, check out our full Loom & Leaf vs. Leesa Comparison.

Loom & Leaf vs. Nectar

The Nectar is another all-foam mattress constructed from layers of memory foam over a base of high-density polyfoam. The Nectar rates at a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale, giving it a medium feel similar to the softer, medium Loom & Leaf option.

Both mattresses are made using layers of cooling gel-infused memory foam over supportive, high-density polyfoam, giving them similar performance in many respects. That being said, the Nectar has a bit of an edge in sleeping cool thanks to its cooling gels and breathable cover. However, its single firmness option means the Loom & Leaf’s variants can provide more targeted contouring and pressure relief to lighter and heavier sleepers.

The Nectar comes in at a significantly lower cost than the Loom & Leaf, although both are quality beds for their price-points. Both are distinguished memory foam options with similar builds. The Nectar is appealing for those with a tighter budget, while the Loom & Leaf may better serve those with targeted firmness preferences.

Read our full Nectar Mattress Review.

Loom & Leaf vs. Tuft & Needle Mattress

Tuft & Needle’s flagship mattress, called the T&N Mattress, is an all-foam mattress with a comfort layer that is infused with graphite and gel designed to help the bed sleep cool. It rates at a 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale.

The T&N mattress doesn’t contain any memory foam, so it won’t offer as close a “hug” feeling as the Loom & Leaf mattress. Despite this, the T&N has superior motion isolation and offers decent pressure relief. However, couples may find that the poor edge support in the T&N mattress reduces the usable sleeping area.

The graphite and gel infusions help the T&N mattress sleep a little cooler than the Loom & Leaf mattress, although since both mattresses are foam, they will sleep warmer than a hybrid or innerspring mattress. For more on how these two models stack up against each other, check out our full Loom & Leaf vs. Tuft & Needle Comparison.
