Zenhaven Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • This flippable mattress features two firmness options that cater to a variety of body types and sleeping styles.
  • The eco-friendly Zenhaven is made with durable natural materials.
  • Dunlop latex contours gently and also offers good responsiveness, making the Zenhaven mattress suitable for combination sleepers.

Zenhaven Mattress Overview

Zenhaven Mattress Overview

The Zenhaven Mattress by Saatva is a flippable all-latex mattress that comes in two firmness options: Luxury Plush and Gentle Firm, which correspond to a 4 and a 7, respectively, on the 1-10 firmness scale. Made with natural Dunlop latex, the mattress provides contouring pressure relief and sufficient support across body types.

The mattress has a 10-inch profile that consists of a 6-inch latex support core surrounded by a 1.5-inch latex comfort layer and half an inch of natural wool padding on either side. The cover is made of organic cotton.

Saatva also makes several other mattresses, including an innerspring mattress, a hybrid mattress, and a memory foam mattress. In addition, the company sells a pillow and mattress topper.

This review will provide a complete breakdown of the Zenhaven mattress, including construction, performance, and practical information surrounding pricing, shipping, warranty, and return policies. We’ll also compare the Zenhaven to several other mattresses to see how it stacks up against the competition.

  • Back sleepers. The Zenhaven provides a balance of support and conforming pressure relief that is ideal for back sleepers of all body types.
  • Eco-conscious shoppers. The Zenhaven mattress is built with sustainability in mind and features many 100% natural materials.
  • People who sleep hot. If you run hot but like the contouring feel of all-foam mattresses, Dunlop latex offers a breathable alternative.

Not Recommended for...

  • People seeking a mattress with strong edge support. Sitting or sleeping on the edge of the Zenhaven mattress is difficult due to the lack of edge support, and may lead to the sensation of rolling off the bed.
  • Heavier sleepers. Side and stomach sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds may find the Zenhaven allows too much sinkage, leading to neck and shoulder pain.

Tuck's Video Review

Our review covers everything you need to know about the Zenhaven mattress. However, if you’re more of a visual person, the following video gives an overview of the construction, sleep experience, and practical details.

Ratings Summary

Tuck’s testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Zenhaven Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

The Zenhaven performed very well on motion isolation and pressure relief. In the course of this review we’ll dive further into the experience of sleeping on the mattress. Click here to jump to our in-depth analysis.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Zenhaven Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

Zenhaven Mattress Awards

Based on our internal testing, here are several areas in which the Zenhaven mattress stood out.

How Is the Zenhaven Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Zenhaven mattress has an organic cotton cover coated with an antimicrobial fabric treatment. A 1-inch layer of New Zealand wool blended with non-toxic materials acts as a natural fire retardant, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals. These materials and treatments make the Zenhaven mattress hypoallergenic, mold- and dust-mite resistant.

Comfort Layers

Since the Zenhaven is a flippable mattress, it has a 1.5 inch comfort layer of aerated Dunlop latex on each side. The Gentle Firm side uses a medium-soft latex with an ILD (indentation load deflection) of 20-24, while the Luxury Plush side uses a soft latex with an ILD of 14-19.

The comfort layer is divided into 5 zones with varying pincore hole patterns, which affect the density of the latex. Firmer support under the shoulders and hips prevent sinkage and offer targeted pressure relief.

Support Layers

Like most flippable mattresses, the Zenhaven features a single support core shared between both sides. The support core consists of a 6-inch layer of Dunlop latex and provides a stable base for the softer layers on each side.

The Gentle Firm side of this 6-inch core features 3 inches of latex with an ILD of 30-34 (medium-firm to firm), while the Luxury Plush side consists of 3 inches of latex with an ILD of 25-29 (medium to medium-firm). The firmness level differences in the support core, combined with the different firmnesses of the comfort layers on each side, result in two distinct feels depending on which side you chose.

Mattress Height

The Zenhaven mattress is 10 inches tall. This is an average height for a mattress, but a bit taller than most all-latex models. This extra height adds to the weight of the mattress and may make it more difficult to flip.

Product Name Firmness Level Thickness Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components
Luxury Plush (Side 1) 4 (Medium Soft) 10″ 6″ Dunlop Latex 1 1/2″ Dunlop Latex Organic Cotton
Gentle Firm (Side 2) 7 (Firm) 1 1/2″ Dunlop Latex Organic Cotton

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

Zenhaven defines one side of the mattress as Luxury Plush and the other side as Gentle Firm. Our sleep testers rated the firmness levels at a 4 (medium-soft) and a 7 (firm) out of 10, respectively. The Luxury Plush side offers closer conforming, and the Gentle Firm side offers a bit more support.

Regardless of sleep position and body type, most people prefer a mattress with a firmness level between 5 and 7. The Zenhaven firmness options fall on either end of this range.

Under the thin layer of wool, the Dunlop latex has high point elasticity and forms a gentle cradle around the sleeper’s body to help support the spine and relieve pressure points. Compared with memory foam, it won’t conform quite as closely and springs back almost immediately when pressure is lifted, making it easier to move around in bed.

Because of the air that’s pushed through the material during manufacturing, Dunlop latex is often described as quite dense. You won’t sink into this mattress as you would with memory foam.

The firm side of the mattress provides better support for stomach sleepers and heavyweight individuals. Side sleepers and lightweight individuals benefit from the contouring of the plush side. Like most latex mattress, the Zenhaven is quite heavy, so it’s advisable to choose your preferred firmness level at the time of setup. If you end up deciding you would prefer to use the other side, Saatva will send a team for free to flip the mattress for you.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Zenhaven Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as reviews from verified mattress owners.

Durability

Given that the Zenhaven mattress has only been on the market since 2016, there is no long-term customer record yet regarding its lifespan. However, latex is known for its durability and will not sag or deform as fast as polyfoam or memory foam.

Dunlop latex is considered quite durable. The Zenhaven mattress doesn’t use synthetic foams and it is made with high-quality materials that should last longer than 5 to 7 years.

Motion Isolation

Our sleep testers found that they could easily move around in bed without disrupting their sleeping partner. We found the Zenhaven mattress to offer above-average motion isolation, although very light sleepers may still be woken up by their partner’s movements.

Off-Gassing

We noticed very minor, rubber-like odors when we first received the Zenhaven mattress, but they quickly dissipated. Since the Zenhaven doesn’t contain any synthetic foams and is not compressed for shipping, it won’t off-gas like mattresses that contain polyfoam and memory foam do.

The mattress is free of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and contains no flame-retardant chemicals.

Pressure Relief

Our sleep testing team found that the Zenhaven mattress provided just the right amount of conforming to alleviate pressure points, even in side sleepers. Our testing concluded that the mattress was suitable for most sleeping positions and body types.

Although it won’t conform as closely as memory foam, latex is less prone to developing permanent body indentations, which makes it better for conforming over the long run.

The Luxury Plush side of the mattress conforms relatively closely and provides excellent pressure relief for lighter-weight sleepers and side sleepers. In contrast, the Gentle Firm side provides a firmer surface better suited to heavyweight individuals and stomach sleepers.

The denser latex under targeted body parts helps support heavier areas of the body and promote proper spinal alignment.

Temperature Neutrality

The Zenhaven mattress won’t sleep as cool as an innerspring or hybrid mattress, which has abundant room for airflow between the coils. However, most people on our testing team found it provided satisfactory temperature regulation.

The Zenhaven’s Dunlop latex has an open-cell structure and is aerated which allows for decent air circulation and prevents the heat retention typical of most synthetic foams. Due to the dense consistency of Dunlop latex, the material does not breathe as well as Talalay latex. That said, the Zenhaven sleeps fairly cool, and the cotton and wool layers also add breathability and help wick away moisture.

Edge Support

With nothing to reinforce the edges, our testers found that the latex in the Zenhaven was prone to compression when sitting or lying on the edge of the bed. The effect was more pronounced in our heavyweight sleepers and when using the Luxury Plush side.

Some of our testers, particularly those in the heavyweight group, did not feel secure when lying close to the edge and experienced a feeling of roll-off. Poor edge support reduces the usable sleeping space, which may be a problem for people who share the bed.

Noise

Tuck’s sleep testers found the Zenhaven to be very quiet when bearing weight, which is typical of all-latex mattresses, since they do not contain any coils that may develop squeaks and creaks over time.

Sex

Our team found that the Zenhaven provided an adequate surface for facilitating movement on top of the bed, especially on the Gentle Firm side. Dunlop latex is fairly quick to regain its shape when pressure is lifted and the Zenhaven is more responsive than a memory foam mattress, but won’t offer the bounce of an innerspring or hybrid mattress.

The bed’s responsiveness allows couples to change position easily, but the lack of bounce may not be ideal for sexual activity. While the mattress is quite quiet, its poor edge support may limit the usable surface area for some couples.

Sleeper Ratings

Next, we’ll look at the sleeper ratings for the Zenhaven mattress. Individuals will interact differently with the layers of a mattress depending on their body type and sleeping position, meaning a mattress that’s perfect for one person may not be comfortable for another.

In order to get a comprehensive idea of how the Zenhaven mattress performs for different sleep profiles, we enlisted a team of sleep testers that represent a variety of body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

The lightweight sleepers on our testing team were most comfortable sleeping on the Luxury Plush side of the Zenhaven mattress, finding that it offered a good level of contouring.

Lightweight sleepers don’t exert as much pressure on a mattress and don’t always sink far enough into a mattress to extract the full pressure-relieving benefits of the comfort layers.

Dunlop latex has a dense and responsive feel, and the Luxury Plush side of the Zenhaven is soft enough to provide adequate pressure relief for most lightweight sleepers while still promoting proper spinal alignment. Side sleepers may experience some pressure points under heavier body parts like the hips and shoulders.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Our average-weight sleepers found that the distribution of different densities in the comfort layer helped provide targeted support where most needed, whether sleeping on the stomach, side, or back. Stomach sleepers will find that the Gentle Firm side prevents the hips from sinking in too far, which is a common problem with plush mattresses.

Back sleepers, in contrast, will find that both sides of the mattress provide a nice balance of contouring pressure relief and gentle support. Side sleepers may experience some pressure points in the Gentle Firm side, but the Luxury Plush side allows sufficient sink to alleviate pressure under the hips and shoulders.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Our sleep team found that the Gentle Firm side of the Zenhaven mattress offered the sturdy support that is needed for back sleepers over 230 pounds. Testers were especially impressed with the comfort layers, where the varying firmness levels in different parts of the body provided additional lumbar support and helped distribute weight to keep the body aloft.

While the Gentle Firm option has firmer foams under the shoulders and torso to prevent these heavier body parts from sinking in too far, side sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds may find that their hips and shoulders still sink into the mattress and cause some sore points. Likewise, heavier stomach sleepers may find that the mattress does not provide enough support under the hips, which can lead to back pain.

How Does the Zenhaven Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

Sometimes it helps to see how a mattress compares to other similar models. Below we’ll compare the Zenhaven to related mattresses.

Saatva

Saatva’s flagship mattress is a coil-on-coil innerspring mattress available in three firmness levels: medium soft (4), medium firm (6), and firm (7.5). The mattress features several comfort layers of polyfoam and memory foam. Under these initial foam layers is a layer of pocketed coils, followed by a support core of bonnell coils.

Thanks to the multiple layers of coils, the Saatva is even bouncier than the Zenhaven mattress. The coils also allow for ample airflow, which means the Saatva is a better choice for people who sleep hot. Heavyweight individuals will find that the Saatva’s coils provide enhanced support compared to the Zenhaven, as well as better edge support which makes it easier to climb in and out of bed.

The Zenhaven offers better motion isolation and a quieter sleeping experience, which makes it an ideal choice for light sleepers who share the bed with a partner.

Read our full Saatva Mattress Review.

Saatva HD

The Saatva HD mattress was designed with heavyweight sleepers in mind and is considered firm (7). The comfort layers include zoned Talalay latex and memory foam. Unique features include reinforced edge support and Spinal Zone active wire, which provides enhanced support in the center third of the mattress.

The Zenhaven is the clear choice for lightweight sleepers, who will find the Saatva HD too firm. Heavier individuals may enjoy either mattress, but the Saatva HD offers a more robust support system. The reinforced edges are helpful to people who need extra support when getting in and out of bed.

The coils in the Saatva HD promote airflow and do a better job at dissipating heat than the latex used in the Zenhaven mattress. Couples may prefer the Saatva HD for its bounciness and edge support, which are conducive to sex. However, the Zenhaven is quieter and the latex restricts motion transfer, which is useful for people who sleep with a partner.

Loom & Leaf

Also made by Saatva, the Loom & Leaf is a memory foam mattress made with cooling gel memory foam and standard memory foam comfort layers and high-density polyfoam support layers. Just like the Zenhaven, the Loom & Leaf comes in two firmness options: Relaxed Firm (5.5) and Firm (8).

The Zenhaven and the Loom & Leaf received similar ratings for motion isolation, edge support, and noise, with the Loom & Leaf offering slightly better motion isolation due to its thick memory foam comfort layers. The memory foam in the Loom & Leaf mattress also offers exceptional contouring, which makes it a good choice for side sleepers and lightweight sleepers.

Meanwhile, heavier individuals feel slightly more supported by the Zenhaven. The airy structure of the Dunlop latex used in the Zenhaven gives it better temperature regulating capacities.

To learn more about the similarities and differences between these two beds, check out our full Loom & Leaf vs. Zenhaven Comparison.

Awara

The Awara hybrid mattress combines organic Dunlop latex with a zoned support layer of pocketed coils. It comes in just one firmness option, medium-firm or a 6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. The materials in the Awara are certified by the Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

Since both mattresses are made with Dunlop latex, the Awara offers a comparable level of conforming as the Zenhaven mattress. Whereas the Zenhaven uses different latex densities to offer zoned support, the Awara uses different gauges of pocketed coils to provide support that will appeal to heavyweight individuals.

The pocketed coils in the Awara mattress provide durability, breathability, and motion isolation. Edge support in the Awara mattress is vastly superior to edge support in the Zenhaven, which benefits those who share a bed or those who have trouble getting in or out of bed.

Brooklyn Bedding Bloom

The Brooklyn Bedding Bloom is a hybrid mattress with a Talalay latex comfort layer. It comes in three firmness options to appeal to most sleeper profiles: soft (3.5), medium (6), and firm (7.5).

The Bloom’s support layer of pocketed coils allows airflow through the mattress, helping heat dissipate and making for a cooler night’s sleep. It also provides extra support needed for heavier individuals.

The Brooklyn Bedding Bloom is a better choice for couples for several reasons. First, the reinforced edges make it possible to sleep on the edge of the mattress, which widens the usable surface area when sharing a small bed. Second, the coils provide added bounce compared to the Zenhaven, which most couples prefer for sex.

Both mattresses isolate motion isolation well and both mattresses are fairly quiet, since pocketed coils don’t make much noise.

Read our full Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Mattress Review.

Latex for Less

The Latex for Less mattress uses the same flippable design as the Zenhaven, with a different firmness level on each side. Talalay latex makes up the medium-firm (6) side, while Dunlop latex makes up the firm (7.5) side. The mattress comes in two thickness profiles, either 9 inches or 7 inches. This thin profile makes it suitable for use in an RV or a bunk bed.

Both the Zenhaven and the Latex for Less isolate motion well and make minimal noise when bearing weight. Average- and heavyweight individuals should find a good balance of support and pressure relief on either mattress. The Latex for Less mattress is too firm for most lightweight side sleepers.

Individuals who choose the medium-firm side of the Latex for Less mattress may find it traps a little more heat due to the Dunlop foam being less breathable. However, the Latex for Less mattress has better edge support.

    2. The company will call you the day before your scheduled delivery day to schedule a 4-hour delivery window. Zenhaven does not charge a fee if you cancel your order before delivery day. Since all mattresses are made to order, expedited delivery is only available on the rare occasion that another customer has canceled their order.

    2. After the first two years, the company will repair and recover a defective mattress for a $149 transportation fee.
    3. Instead of repairing a defective mattress, customers can instead elect the Fairness Replacement Option. This allows owners of defective mattresses to obtain a new mattress at a discounted price. No delivery fees will be charged and they get to keep the original mattress.
    4. Although Saatva recommends purchasing a foundation along with the mattress, use of the mattress with an appropriate platform bed or adjustable base does not void the warranty as long as you cover any slats with a solid, uniform surface to prevent damage to the underside of the mattress. In the case of metal frames, using queen and king mattresses without a 5-legged or 6-legged metal frame and vertical center support will void the warranty.
    5. The warranty applies only to the original purchaser and does not apply to burned, abused, or damaged bedding.
