Sleep Position Ratings
As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Plank Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.
The Plank’s standard cover is a breathable cotton and polyester blend. An optional cooling panel, made from phase change molecule (PCM) fabric, is also available for purchase for an additional charge. The combination of the breathable blended cover and the temperature regulating PCM provide a cooler sleep experience for people who tend to sleep hot on all-foam models.
Comfort Layers
The flippable Plank offers two comfort level options, which they call Firm and Ultra Firm, which corresponds to a firm (7) and extra firm (9) on the firmness scale.
The firm side has a 1.5 inch quilted layer of high-density polyfoam. This foam has a density of 1.5 PCF (pounds per cubic foot) and an ILD (indentation load deflection) of 50, which creates minimal loft for a firm sleep experience.
The extra firm side features a .75 inch quilted layer of 1.5 PCF polyfoam with an ILD of 36. Beneath that is a 2 inch layer of 3.5 PCF TitanFlex foam, which is a latex alternative polyfoam with an ILD of 30. Together, these layers create an even firmer feel with very little conforming.

The Plank has a 7 inch thick support core made up of high-density 1.8 PCF polyfoam with an ILD of 36. The sturdy base provides firm support for the already firm comfort layers on either side. The result is an exceptionally firm feel that provides solid support, especially for heavyweight sleepers.
Mattress Height
The Plank measures 11.75 inches tall. Although it’s considered a medium-profile mattress, it is slightly thicker than average. Due to its flippable design, this leads to less space for each comfort layer than many competing models.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?
The Plank is one of the firmest models on the market. Brooklyn Bedding advertises this flippable mattress as offering a firm (8) side and ultra firm (10) side. Our testing team rated the two sides as firm (7) and extra firm (9) on the 1-10 firmness scale, respectively.
The Plank is well-suited to people who prefer a firm, supportive sleep surface, especially heavyweight sleepers. This mattress has a floating feeling of sleeping “on” as opposed to “sinking into” it. Because of its firm nature, this mattress does not create a pressure relieving cradle, and may not be well suited to lightweight or side sleepers as a result.

Next let’s take a look at the performance ratings for the Plank Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, along with verified customer and owner experiences.
Durability
Brooklyn Bedding was established in 2009, launching the Plank Mattress in 2018. Because this is a newer mattress, we’re basing our durability ratings on the materials used, quality of construction, and owner experiences.
Brooklyn Bedding is known for using high-quality materials in their beds. The Plank is no exception, using dense foams which won’t degrade significantly over the natural lifespan of the mattress. This means that consumers can expect very little sagging and body impressions over time. We expect the Plank to last at least 7-8 years. Although we anticipate this mattress will have a longer-than-average lifespan, we do recommend rotating it head-to-foot regularly to extend the lifespan of the foam.
Motion Isolation
To test motion isolation, we had one of our testers move around on top of the mattress, while the other was still and felt for motion transfer. The Plank performed very well, isolating most motion.
Our overnight sleep testers who sleep with a partner confirmed these results, feeling very little motion when their partner shifted or changed positions during the night. They did report feeling some motion when their partner got into and out of bed, though. Overall, the Plank performed on-par with other all-foam models we’ve tested.
Off-Gassing
Our sleep testing team found that the Plank did emit an odor when first taken out of the box. This is common with foam beds, as they release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. VOCs are a byproduct of synthetic foams and are relatively harmless. All-foam beds tend to trap these smells more than hybrid beds, which allow airflow through their coil layer.
Our testers found that the Plank had a strong odor when first opened, a mild odor after 24 hours, and virtually no odor after 48 hours. Within two days of unboxing, we didn’t notice any odor. Most people should be able to sleep comfortably on the Plank after the first day. That being said, sensitive sleepers may want to wait a few days to ensure the odor is gone.
Pressure Relief
While our testing team found this bed to have fair pressure relief, our pressure-mapping technology showed pressure points in the shoulders and hips for lightweight and side sleepers. As an exceptionally firm mattress, our testers found that the Plank is best-suited to sleepers who prefer to sleep “on” as opposed to “in” a mattress.
Due to its very firm feel on both sides, our sleep testers found that the Plank did not conform closely to the body. It may not be the best option for sleepers with chronic pain, as they tend to prefer a more body-hugging feel. That being said, the lack of conforming makes it a good option for stomach and back sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds as it will provide support without excessive sagging.
Temperature Neutrality
Our in-house and external testing found the Plank mattress to be fairly temperature neutral for an all-foam model due to its firmness, which keeps the sleeper floating above rather than sinking into the bed. They also found that it traps some heat throughout the night. This is to be expected from a bed made up of high-density foams, which tend to sleep hotter than lower density foams.
The optional cooling panel with phase change molecule fabric is designed to aid in temperature regulation, which benefits customers who tend to sleep hot. Overall, we found the Plank performed on-par with other all-foam beds, and customers should be aware that it has the potential to sleep warm.
Edge Support
Our sleep testing team, regardless of their weight, found the Plank to have very good edge support. They reported feeling supported when sitting or sleeping on the edge of the bed. They also found it provides better edge support than other all-foam beds. This is due to the high-density foams used in its construction, which provide excellent support without excessive sagging.
When sleeping on or close to the edge of the bed, our testers found that there was little to no sensation of rolling off. Those who share a bed found this especially helpful, as it allowed them to use the entire surface. Strong edge support also makes it easier to get on and off the bed.
Noise
Our sleep testing team reported that the Plank was silent throughout the night. This is due to its all-foam construction, as noise is generally associated with coil systems. The Plank is a good option for couples and noise-sensitive sleepers.
Sex
The Plank, like other all-foam models, lacks the bounce and responsiveness provided by a hybrid or innerspring bed. This is due to its foam construction, which is known for having little to no bounce, which can make position changes difficult.
Its foam construction isn’t entirely bad for sex, though. The Plank’s sturdy edge support allows couples to utilize the entire surface of the mattress, while its silent nature makes it very discreet.
Sleeper Ratings
The ideal firmness and type of mattress largely depends on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, we evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.
Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.
Our lightweight sleep testers reported that the Plank did not have a body-conforming feel. Our pressure mapping technology found that this mattress creates pressure points in the hips and shoulders, particularly among side and back sleepers. Sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds tend to prefer softer, more conforming beds.
Our lightweight stomach sleep testers had a better overall experience, and found this mattress to be supportive and firm. Lightweight customers who sleep on their stomach and prefer a firm mattress may be satisfied with the Plank. Lightweight side and stomach sleepers should opt for a softer model.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.
Our average weight back and side sleepers experienced pressure points in the hips and shoulders when lying on the Plank mattress. This isn’t surprising, as side sleepers tend to need more body conforming to support pressure sensitive areas.
That being said, our average weight sleep testers had an overall good sleep experience on this mattress. Stomach sleepers in this weight group gave the bed the highest scores, since they require a firmer surface to maintain healthy spinal alignment.
Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.
This mattress is designed to offer firm support, and shines in our heavyweight sleep testing category as a result. The Plank provides excellent spinal alignment and support for heavyweight sleepers regardless of sleep position. Our heavyweight back and stomach sleepers were especially impressed with both sides of this mattress.
Heavier sleepers tend to prefer medium-firm to firm beds with a floating feeling. Our sleep testers felt well supported and noticed little to no sinkage on this bed.
How Does the Plank Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

Plank vs. Loom & Leaf
The Loom & Leaf is a 12 inch thick, mixed foam mattress with a quilted organic cotton cover. It comes in two firmness options, Relaxed Firm and Firm, which correspond to medium (5.5) and firm (8) on the 1-10 firmness scale.
The Loom & Leaf provides a more conforming, body-hugging feel than the Plank due to the memory foam used in its construction. It offers excellent pressure relief and is better suited to lightweight and side sleepers who are prone to pressure points when sleeping on a firmer bed.
The Plank is more supportive and better suited to heavier sleepers, as they may find the conforming memory foam used in the Loom & Leaf too soft. Heavier sleepers who prefer a more conforming feel should opt for Loom & Leaf’s Firm option. Couples should note that compared to the Plank, the Loom & Leaf may have a reduced usable surface area due to its weaker edge support.
The Titan, like the Plank, is made by Brooklyn Bedding and designed especially for heavyweight sleepers. The Titan is a hybrid mattress with comfort layers of memory foam and TitanFlex foam over a pocketed coil support core. Like the Plank, the Titan comes with an optional phase-change layer to promote temperature regulation. It’s a firm mattress (8 out of 10 on the firmness scale), rating in between the two firmness options of the Plank (7 and 9).
The Titan is a more responsive bed and has better edge support than the Plank, which is to be expected from an innerspring mattress. As an all-foam model the Plank is going to be virtually silent, while the Titan could produce noise over time. Both mattresses have the potential to create pressure points in side sleepers and lightweight to average weight sleepers. Ultimately, the choice comes down to whether you prefer the feel of an all-foam or a hybrid model.
Like the Plank, the Layla is an all-foam, flippable mattress. It differs by offering a medium-soft (4 out of 10) option as well as a firm (7) option. It’s constructed with a comfort layer of copper-infused memory foam on both sides, a polyfoam transitional layer on the medium-soft side, and a support core of high-density polyfoam shared between the two sides.
The Layla has a lower price-point and offers both a medium-soft side, designed for lightweight to average weight sleepers, and a firm side, designed for heavyweight or stomach sleepers. Its memory foam comfort layer creates a body-hugging cradle and prevents pressure points from developing.

The memory foam used in its comfort layer creates a body-hugging cradle ideal for lightweight to average weight sleepers. Heavyweight sleepers will likely find the Casper too soft and may experience sagging. The Plank offers heavier sleepers more support with its firm feel and excellent edge support, making it easy to get into and out of the bed.
Overall the Casper is best suited to sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less and prefer a balance of contouring and support. The Plank, on the other hand, is best suited to people who weigh over 230 pounds and prefer a supportive feel.
The Tuft & Needle Mint is a 12 inch thick, medium-firm (6) mattress. It’s an all-polyfoam model like the Plank, but differs with a gel and graphite-infused comfort layer and a gel-infused transitional layer which keep it cooler overall.
The Mint comes in at a lower price point as well, making it a great value option. As a medium-firm bed, It has a balance of body conforming and support. Due to this, it’s best suited to average weight sleepers under 230 pounds. Heavyweight sleepers may find it too soft, and may prefer a firmer model like the Plank. Both mattresses are virtually silent and offer excellent motion isolation.
The GravityLux by WinkBeds is a 12 inch thick, mixed-foam mattress constructed with a memory foam comfort layer, a zoned polyfoam transitional layer, and polyfoam support core.
With the GravityLux, shoppers can choose the feel they prefer with a medium-soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7) option. This sleep trial includes a mandatory 30-night break-in period. Exchanges and refunds will not be offered until at least 30 nights have elapsed.
The sleep trial begins on the date of delivery.
One sleep trial is available to households per calendar year.
In lieu of a mattress return, exchanges are available after 30 nights. Brooklyn Bedding allows customers to exchange their Plank for any other company mattress; in the event of an upgrade, customers will pay the difference.
Full product refunds are issued for all returns. However, shipping fees are not refundable.
Warranty: Brooklyn Bedding offers a 10-year limited warranty on all mattresses.
This warranty is entirely nonprorated.
Warranty coverage begins on the date of purchase. Brooklyn Bedding will, at its sole option, repair or replace mattresses with defects for as long as the warranty is valid.
Warranty coverage is contingent on proper foundational support. Per Brooklyn Bedding: ‘Brooklyn Bedding mattresses have been designed to be used on foundations with solid support with little or no give. This includes slatted wood or metal foundations with slats no more than 4? apart, wood or metal box foundations, and solid wood or metal platforms. Substitution or use of improper foundations such as old box springs (5+ years or more) without solid support, slatted wood or metal foundations with slats more than 4? apart, will void your mattress warranty, and all other warranties expressed or implied.’
The warranty will cover the following defects:
Sagging or body indentations that measure one inch (1?) or deeper.
Defects in the mattress that cause the material to split or crack.
The warranty will not cover the following:
Sagging or indentations that do not measure one inch (1?) or deeper, normal increases in softness of the mattress material, or normal decreases in shape recovery. These issues are all considered standard wear and tear.
Stains, burns, and other types of physical damage that occur due to owner misuse, improper cleaning, or inadequate foundational support.
Defects that occur after the mattress was not removed from its packaging within 60 nights.
This warranty is exclusively offered to original owners who purchase their Plank from Brooklyn Bedding or an authorized retailer. Those who buy or acquire their mattress from the original owner or a non-authorized retailer will not qualify for warranty coverage.
