EcoCloud Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • Made with eco-friendly materials including organic cotton and natural latex, the EcoCloud is very durable and should last many years.
  • Generous airflow and a breathable cover provide a cool sleep.
  • As a latex hybrid, the EcoCloud features zoned coils and and reinforced edges that provide sturdy support for all sleeper types.

EcoCloud Mattress Overview

EcoCloud Mattress Overview

WinkBeds makes a range of sleep products and mattresses, including the WinkBed foam hybrid and the GravityLux memory foam mattresses. The company makes all its mattresses in its Wisconsin factory from American-sourced materials. One of the WinkBeds’ latest offerings is the EcoCloud mattress, a latex hybrid that’s durable and sustainably made.

Constructed with an organic cotton and wool cover, Talalay latex, and pocketed springs, the EcoCloud mattress stands at 13 inches tall and measures a 6 (medium firm) on the 1-10 firmness scale. It offers all the benefits of a latex hybrid, including temperature neutrality, responsiveness, contouring pressure relief.

Keep reading for a comprehensive overview of the EcoCloud mattress including construction, performance, and practical details. We’ll also cover some benefits and drawbacks of the mattress and draw comparisons with similar models.

Meet Our Testing Team
  • Back sleepers. Contouring latex and supportive coils provide the right balance of pressure relief and support for back sleepers across all weight categories.
  • Those who sleep hot. Thanks to the breathable cover, aerated latex, and pocketed coils, the EcoCloud allows for generous airflow which prevents the mattress from trapping heat.
  • People who have trouble getting in and out of bed. The EcoCloud mattress has strong edges and a higher-than-average profile that facilitates getting in and out of bed.

Not Recommended for...

  • People who are easily disrupted by noise and movement. Due to the somewhat noisy coils and relatively high amount of motion transfer, the EcoCloud is not the best choice for light sleepers.
  • Those who prefer the “hug” of memory foam. While latex does conform relatively closely to the body, it won’t offer the tight “hug” feeling of a memory foam mattress.

Ratings Summary

Tuck’s testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the EcoCloud Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

With a combination of coils and latex, the EcoCloud combines strong edge support, excellent temperature neutrality, and a responsive surface. Click here to jump to a detailed explanation of our findings.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the EcoCloud Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

How Is the EcoCloud Mattress Constructed?

The cover is made with 100 percent organic cotton and New Zealand wool. This provides a breathable surface that helps wick moisture away from the body, keeping the mattress temperature-neutral.

Comfort Layers

The top comfort layer is made with two inches of convoluted Talalay latex with an impression load deflection (ILD) of 12. ILD measures the amount of weight that’s needed to compress a given area of latex, and the number can range from less than 12 to more than 39. An ILD of 12 is extremely plush for latex and while it doesn’t conform to the same extent as memory foam, it allows more sink in the comfort layers compared with competing latex mattresses.

Underneath is a 2-inch layer of Talalay latex, also with an ILD of 12. This layer has seven different firmness levels arranged strategically to provide variable pressure point relief for different body parts, with firmer foam under the lumbar area and softer foam under the shoulders and hips.

The Talalay latex used in the EcoCloud mattress has an open-cell structure and aeration in the form of pincore holes. These promote air circulation and make for a cooler sleep experience. The latex is OEKO-Tex Class 100 certified free of harmful substances and Talalay latex is naturally antibacterial, hypoallergenic, and dust-mite resistant.

Support Layers

The support core consists of 8 inches of pocketed coils, resting on a base of cotton. The coils are made with recycled steel and tempered three times for maximum strength. Divided into five zones, this layer provides targeted support to different parts of the body to keep the spine properly aligned.

Mattress Height

The EcoCloud mattress is 13 inches tall, which is higher than the average mattress. This allows for thick latex comfort layers that provide a pressure-relieving cradle without sacrificing depth in the coil support core. Individuals who find they bottom out with other mattresses shouldn’t have any problem with the EcoCloud. Due to it’s high profile, this mattress should be used with deep-pocketed sheets.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

WinkBeds rates the EcoCloud mattress firmness as medium, or 5 out of 10 on the 1-10 firmness scale. Our sleep team found it to be closer to a 6 out of 10, or medium firm. Keep in mind that this is a zoned mattress with varying firmness levels in different parts of the body.

The Talalay latex forms a springy cradle that provides pressure relief without excessive contouring. While the mattress does allow a bit of sink, it’s very responsive and easy to move around on. This makes it suitable for sex and for combination sleepers who frequently change sleeping positions.

Underneath the latex, the pocketed coils provide a firm support core that ensures proper spinal alignment. Overall, the mattress provides a balance of support and pressure relief that is particularly well-suited to back sleepers.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the EcoCloud Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as verified owner and customer experiences with the mattress.

The EcoCloud was released in the summer of 2019 and hasn’t been on the market long enough yet for us to be able to evaluate its long-term performance. However, given the durable materials used to make the mattress, we expect it to have an above-average durability of at least 8 years.

Latex is known for its longevity, and pocketed coils are usually more durable than most polyfoam support cores. Both materials are capable of supporting weight with hardly any sagging.

Motion Isolation

Testers on our sleep team who shared the bed with a partner reported that movement on one side of the bed was quite noticeable on the other, especially when getting in and out of bed. This was confirmed by our lab tests.

The high point elasticity of Talalay latex means that it is able to conform in response to pressure while mostly keeping motion isolated to the immediate area where pressure is applied. Since the pocketed coils are individually wrapped and not connected to each other as in a traditional innerspring mattress, the support core also limits motion transfer to a degree.

However, both materials are inherently bouncy. As a result, they do transfer more motion than materials like memory foam.

We noticed a very faint odor upon unboxing the mattress, but the smell did not linger. Latex mattresses sometimes have a slight rubbery smell, but normally memory foam and polyfoam mattresses are the worst offenders for off-gassing, The pocketed coils allow for generous airflow that should allow most smells to dissipate within a few days.

Pressure Relief

Average-weight sleepers on our testing team experienced very good pressure relief, especially when lying on their back. Heavyweight side sleepers who sank further into the mattress found that as they neared the coils, they felt some pressure points in the hips and shoulders.

The EcoCloud mattress won’t offer the “hug” feeling and pressure-relieving cradle of memory foam. However, in an effort to provide targeted pressure relief, WinkBeds has included seven different firmness zones in the Talalay latex. For this reason, our pressure-mapping tools showed relatively good pressure relief under the hips and shoulders in lightweight and average weight side sleepers.

Temperature Neutrality

Our testers found the EcoCloud mattress to have excellent temperature neutrality. The cover is made of breathable cotton and wool, helping wick moisture away from the body. Moreover, the mattress has plenty of airflow thanks to the pinhole-studded, open-cell Talalay latex and pocketed coils.

All of these factors allow the sleeper’s body heat to dissipate instead of staying trapped in the mattress. Furthermore, as sleepers won’t sink very far into this mattress, there is minimal danger of heat being trapped between the sides of the body and the mattress.

Edge Support

Testers across all weight categories found the edges of the EcoCloud mattress to be very supportive when sitting on or lying near the edge of the bed. This is not surprising given that the mattress includes lower-gauge coils around the perimeter to provide reinforced edge support.

This mattress shouldn’t pose a problem when getting in and out of bed. Strong edge support also increases the usable sleep surface for people who share a smaller mattress.

While pocketed coils keep noise to a minimum compared with a traditional innerspring mattress, our testing team still heard the occasional squeak or creak. Sensitive sleepers may prefer an all-foam or all-latex mattress, both of which are virtually silent.

Our sleep team rated the EcoCloud as excellent for sex due to its high responsiveness. With its cool, bouncy surface and sturdy edges, the EcoCloud makes it easy to move around and increases the possibilities for different positions. The one downside is that the mattress may be a little noisy, making it difficult to be discreet.

Sleeper Ratings

We’ve already discussed this briefly above, but in this section we’ll be taking a closer look at our sleeper ratings for the EcoCloud Mattress. Mattresses perform differently for different individuals depending on body type and preferred sleeping position, so we’ve compiled the experiences of sleepers of various profiles in order to give an objective overview of the EcoCloud.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Despite not sinking in very far, all of the lightweight sleepers on our testing team found that the latex layers were able to provide sufficient pressure relief for a comfortable sleep. Even side sleepers found minimal pressure points under the typically problematic hips and shoulders. This is likely due to the zoning in the comfort layers and pocketed coils, which are less firm under these heavier body parts.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Average weight side and back sleepers on our testing team found the mattress very comfortable. As a medium-firm mattress, the EcoCloud is perfectly suited to average weight sleepers, providing consistent pressure relief yet keeping the spine aligned thanks to the robust support coils.

Because the top few inches of the mattress do allow some sink, a few of our stomach sleepers experienced some slight sagging under the hips, which threw the spine out of alignment. While the coils will prevent any excessive sinkage, some stomach sleepers may find the mattress a little uncomfortable.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Our sleep team described the feeling of sleeping on the EcoCloud as sleeping in, not on, the mattress. Heavyweight sleepers exert more pressure on a mattress and as a result they sink in deeper. The latex in the EcoCloud is fairly plush but with such a firm support layer, the EcoCloud mattress provides adequate spinal support suitable for heavier back sleepers.

As with average weight sleepers, stomach sleepers may experience some uncomfortable sagging around the hips. Conversely, heavyweight side sleepers may find they sink in so much they start to interact with the pocketed coils, which can cause some pressure points in heavier body parts like the hips and shoulders.

How Does the EcoCloud Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

To help readers get a better idea of how the EcoCloud stacks up against other mattresses, we’ve compared it to some of its closest competitors.

EcoCloud vs. EcoSleep

The EcoSleep by Brooklyn Bedding is a latex hybrid featuring a flippable design with two different firmness options. One side of the mattress is medium firm (6), while the other side is firm (7). The bed is 11.5 inches thick and has a pocketed coil support core, Talalay latex comfort layers, and a cotton and wool cover.

Neither the EcoCloud and EcoSleep offer stellar motion isolation, but both offer reliable edge support. Both mattresses are breathable, durable, and quite responsive due to the coils. This makes either mattress good for sex.

The major difference between the two mattresses lies in their firmness levels. The firm side of the EcoSleep is better-suited to individuals who weigh at least 130 pounds, especially back and stomach sleepers.

The EcoCloud mattress offers slightly closer contouring and is better-suited to lightweight and side sleepers, although heavyweight individuals should be comfortable on the EcoCloud as well. The EcoCloud is significantly more expensive than the EcoSleep.

EcoCloud vs. Brooklyn Bedding Bloom

The Bloom is a 12 inch tall hybrid latex mattress made by Brooklyn Bedding. Just like the EcoCloud, it has a support core made of pocketed coils, a comfort layer made of Talalay latex, and a comfort layer made of wool and organic cotton.

The Bloom comes in three different firmness settings: soft (3.5), medium firm (6), and firm (7.5), which means it can be adapted to suit almost any sleeper profile.

As a latex hybrid, the Bloom shares many advantages with the EcoCloud: superior temperature regulation, durability, and edge support. Although both mattresses help alleviate pressure points, the soft model of the Bloom mattress offers closer conforming than the EcoCloud mattress.

Both mattresses have coils and will produce some noise, but the Bloom performs slightly better on motion isolation, making it the better choice for people who share the bed. Heavyweight sleepers also rated the Bloom more highly, especially the firm model.

Prices for the two mattresses are virtually identical.

EcoCloud vs. Avocado

The Avocado Green is a hybrid mattress with a pocketed coil base layer and a comfort layer made with Dunlop latex and organic wool. Avocado’s second mattress, the Avocado Vegan, replaces the wool with organic cotton. Like the EcoCloud, the Avocado divides its coils into five different zones for targeted spinal support.

Both Avocado mattresses are ranked as firm (7), although Avocado includes the option to add a pillow-top to bring the firmness down to medium firm (6.5). The mattresses measure 11 inches, or 13 inches with the pillow-top.

The Avocado mattresses are fairly firm and are particularly well-suited to heavyweight sleepers, as they support the body without allowing too much sinkage. The EcoCloud uses Talalay latex instead of Dunlop latex, which tends to have a lighter, more buoyant feel. This makes it the clear choice for lightweight sleepers and side sleepers.

Both mattresses feature reinforced edge support and excellent temperature regulation thanks to the pocketed coils and breathable cover materials.

EcoCloud vs. Birch

The Birch Mattress by Helix Sleep is a latex hybrid with a pocketed-coil base layer, Talalay latex comfort layers, and a thin layer of organic wool in the top comfort layer. The Birch is only 11 inches tall. It feels slightly firmer, about a 6.5 or medium-firm, and transfers a little more motion than the EcoCloud.

Due to its firmer surface, the Birch mattress is more suitable than the EcoCloud for average-weight and heavyweight sleepers, while the EcoCloud is a better choice for lightweight and side sleepers.

Both mattresses rank highly on temperature regulation, durability, and edge support, which is to be expected given their combination of latex and coils. Couples will find that either mattress provides the responsiveness and edge support needed for sex, although despite being individually wrapped, the coils may produce some noise.

The Birch mattress is priced at a lower price-point than the EcoCloud, which may be a consideration for budget-conscious shoppers.

EcoCloud vs. Brentwood Cedar

The Brentwood Cedar is a latex hybrid that combines an organic cotton Euro-top, natural wool, 3-zone Dunlop latex, and a 5-zone support core made with pocketed coils. Brentwood has constructed a base layer made of coconut husks to provide an eco-friendly foundation for the coils. The mattress is 13 inches tall and falls at a 5 on the firmness scale, or “medium,” slightly plusher than the EcoCloud.

The Brentwood Cedar gets top marks for durability, temperature neutrality, and edge support due to its breathable construction and high-quality materials. The latex goes some way in isolating motion but as with the EcoCloud, people who sleep with a partner will still notice when their partner moves around. The Cedar ranks average for noise and pressure relief but its high responsiveness makes it suitable for sex.

The Cedar comes at a significantly steeper price-point than the EcoCloud but is preferred by almost all sleeper types.

EcoCloud vs. Zenhaven

A flippable mattress with a different firmness option on each side, the 10-inch tall Zenhaven is an all-latex bed with several key differences from the EcoCloud. The mattress is entirely made of Talalay latex, with one medium soft (4) side and one firm (7) side. This choice of firmness levels makes it suitable for most sleeping positions and body types, although lightweight side and stomach sleepers might find better pressure relief on the EcoCloud.

Without the coils to boost airflow, the Zenhaven traps more heat than the EcoCloud. It also lacks edge support, making it unsuitable for those who spend a lot of time sitting on the edge of the bed or for couples who share a small bed. Finally, the EcoCloud’s coils provide a bouncier surface which is more conducive to sex. On the other hand, the Zenhaven is virtually silent and does a much better job of isolating motion than the EcoCloud.
