Best Mattresses in a Box of 2026

Written by Tuck Staff

Quick Overview

Choosing the best mattress in a box depends on more than firmness. Your sleep position, body weight, whether you sleep alone or with a partner, your budget, any health conditions, and even your temperature preferences all shape what will feel right. A back sleeper who runs hot needs something different from a side sleeper who shares the bed with a restless partner. That’s a lot to consider before you commit.

There are hundreds of mattress-in-a-box models on the market today, and new brands launch every year. That sheer volume makes it genuinely hard to narrow down which ones are actually worth ordering online, sight unseen, and returning if they don’t work out.

This guide leans on hands-on testing experience plus data-backed research to narrow the field to the top eight mattresses in a box. Rather than lumping every bed into a single ranking, we’ve sorted our picks by the needs that matter most, from side sleeping to back support to organic materials. Whatever your sleep position, budget, and preferences, there’s an option here worth a closer look.

The Helix Midnight Luxe earns our Best Overall pick because it strikes a balance that works for a wide range of sleepers. Its medium firm feel sits in the sweet spot between cushioning and support, so it doesn’t push anyone too far in either direction. Combination sleepers, couples, and sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds should all find this mattress to be a good match. If you’re not sure exactly what you need, this is a sensible starting point that gives you room to settle in without a strong bias toward soft or firm.

The Midnight Luxe pairs memory foam comfort layers over a pocketed coil support core, creating a true hybrid feel. The foam contours to your hips and shoulders for pressure relief, while the coils keep the surface responsive and supportive so you never feel stuck. Zoned lumbar support reinforces the middle of the bed to help keep the spine aligned, which is where a lot of people between 130 and 230 pounds feel the difference. Motion isolation is solid for a coil bed, so partners won’t feel every shift when someone climbs in or turns over, and a breathable cover helps the surface sleep cool.

Beyond comfort, the Midnight Luxe backs its performance with a 120-night sleep trial, giving you ample time to decide whether it’s right for you, and a lifetime warranty to cover defects beyond the trial window. The mattress ships free of charge within the contiguous U.S., comes compressed in a box, and sets up quickly once you remove the packaging.

The Bottom Line.

The Helix Midnight Luxe offers a versatile medium firm hybrid feel that suits most sleep styles. It’s an easy recommendation for anyone who wants balanced comfort and strong support.

  • Combination sleepers who switch positions during the night.
  • Couples who want dependable motion isolation.
  • Average-weight sleepers seeking a balanced feel.

  • Strict budget shoppers who want the lowest possible price.
  • Sleepers wanting a deep memory foam hug and slow-sinking contour

Best ValueBrooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Memory Foam

BROOKLYNBEDDING.com

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex Memory Foam earns Best Value by delivering thoughtful features at a lower price than most competitors. Budget shoppers, memory foam fans, and hot sleepers shopping on a budget should all be pleased with this all-foam model. It proves that a modest price doesn’t necessarily mean a bare-bones bed.

The CopperFlex uses copper-infused memory foam in its comfort layers, which conform closely to relieve pressure around the hips and shoulders. Copper is used to help draw heat away from the surface, so the bed sleeps cooler than many all-foam models, which tend to feel warm. Motion isolation is a defining strength — the layers absorb and practically eliminate movement on the surface, which benefits couples who don’t want to wake each other. As an all-foam bed, edge support is more modest, and the mattress can feel less firm around the perimeter when you sit on the side to dress.

The CopperFlex Memory Foam is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty, and it ships free in a compressed box to customers in the contiguous U.S. For the money, the combination of copper-infused cooling, close contouring, and shopper perks makes the CopperFlex a standout value that punches above its cost.

The Bottom Line.

The Brooklyn Bedding CopperFlex delivers an affordable all-foam feel with copper-infused cooling. It’s a smart pick for anyone who wants memory-foam comfort without a premium price.

  • Budget shoppers who don’t want to sacrifice comfort.
  • Memory foam fans who like close contouring.
  • Hot sleepers on a budget seeking a cool, pressure-relieving bed.

Not Recommended For:

  • Heavier sleepers who need coil-based support.
  • Back and stomach sleepers who want more pushback.

  • Lifetime warranty
  • Zoned coils feel more supportive beneath the midsection
  • Above-average motion isolation for couples

Best HybridLeesa Sapira Hybrid

LEESA.com

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid earns Best Hybrid because it blends bounce and contouring in a way that few beds manage this effectively. The coils give it a lively, supportive base, while the foam layers cushion your sore spots without engulfing your entire body. Combination sleepers, couples who want responsiveness, and hot sleepers tend to find it a good match. If you want the best of both foam and coils — the ease of movement of a spring bed with the cradle of foam — the Sapira Chill makes a strong case.

Cooling foam comfort layers over a pocketed-coil support core deliver a balanced feel, but you can choose from medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (7) designs depending on how much contouring you want. The foam relieves pressure at the shoulders and hips, while the individually wrapped coils flex to support your body and add a responsive feel that makes changing positions easy. That same coil layer strengthens edge support, so the perimeter stays sturdy when you sit or sleep near the sides — a real advantage over most all-foam beds. Motion isolation is good, thanks to the foam and the independent coils that limit how far movement travels across the surface. The cooling construction helps the bed stay temperature-neutral through the night.

The Sapira Chill comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty, and it ships free to all 50 states. The trial gives you plenty of time to test how the hybrid feel holds up across your sleep positions. Given its balanced blend of support and cooling, plus its responsive feel and dependable policies, it delivers strong value for anyone shopping specifically for a hybrid.

The Bottom Line.

The Leesa Sapira Chill Hybrid offers a well-rounded blend of coil support, foam contouring, and cooling. It’s a versatile pick for sleepers who want responsiveness without giving up pressure relief.

  • Combination sleepers who move between positions.
  • Couples who want a mattress that isolates motion well.
  • Hot sleepers seeking cooling comfort layers.

Not Recommended For:

  • People who want a mattress with strong bounce.
  • Strict budget shoppers seeking an entry-level price-point.

The Bear Elite Hybrid earns Best for Back Pain because its light cushioning and zoned lumbar reinforcement help keep the spine in a neutral position. Proper alignment is key for people with lower back pain, and the Elite Hybrid’s construction is built around that goal. Back sleepers, combination sleepers, and people looking for a supportive feel tend to find it a good match. It’s a bed designed with alignment in mind rather than as an afterthought.

Three firmness levels are available: medium (5), medium firm (6), and firm (8). This range accommodates most types of sleepers, so you can choose a design based on your weight and preferred sleep position. All three contain zoned coils, which place more support beneath the midsection to keep a sleeper’s body on an even plane. Motion isolation is respectable for a hybrid, and the cooling construction keeps the surface temperature-neutral so discomfort isn’t compounded by overheating.

The Elite Hybrid is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty, and it ships free of charge in a compressed box to customers in the contiguous U.S.

The Bottom Line.

The Bear Elite Hybrid pairs plush foam layers with zoned lumbar support to help keep the spine neutral. It’s a thoughtful pick for people seeking supportive comfort, with realistic expectations about relief.

  • Back sleepers who want extra lumbar support.
  • Couples who easily awaken each other with movement.
  • People who usually sleep hot on memory foam.

Not Recommended For:

  • Sleepers who prefer a springy, bouncy surface.
  • Shoppers with strictly limited budgets.

Best for Side SleepersNolah Evolution

NOLAHMATTRESS.com

The Nolah Evolution earns Best for Side Sleepers because it cradles the hips and shoulders while keeping the spine aligned. Side sleeping concentrates your body weight onto those two joints, and the Evolution’s cushioning surface is built to absorb that pressure. Couples who want motion isolation and anyone dealing with shoulder or hip pressure should also find this mattress comfortable.

The Evolution’s comfort layers feature AirFoam, Nolah’s proprietary foam designed for pressure point relief. That foam conforms to the shoulders and hips to ease pressure while a zoned coil support core keeps the midsection supported and the spine level, so your waist doesn’t dip out of line. The cooling Euro-top adds a plush top layer and helps the surface stay temperature-neutral through the night. Motion isolation is strong, thanks to the foam layers, and edge support benefits from the reinforced coils that hold the perimeter firm. Multiple firmness options let you match the feel to your body weight and preferred sleep position.

The Evolution comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty, and it ships free in a compressed box. The lengthy trial gives your body time to adjust to the pressure-relieving feel.

The Bottom Line.

The Nolah Evolution delivers targeted pressure relief and reliable alignment for side sleepers. It’s a strong match for anyone who wakes up with shoulder or hip soreness.

  • Side sleepers who need shoulder and hip cushioning.

Best for Heavy PeopleTitan Plus Luxe

TITANMATTRESS.COM

The Titan Plus Luxe earns Best for Heavy People because its reinforced support and durable materials are engineered for higher body weights. Many mattresses sag or bottom out under heavier sleepers within a year or two, but the Plus Luxe is built to hold up. Sleepers over roughly 230 pounds, back and stomach sleepers who want firm support, and couples who need sturdy edges tend to find it a good match. It’s a bed designed to stay supportive over time rather than softening prematurely.

The Plus Luxe layers high-density foams over a heavy-duty coil core, producing a firmer feel that resists excess sinkage. The robust coils support larger bodies and help keep the spine aligned instead of letting the hips drop, while reinforced edge support keeps the perimeter sturdy for sitting and sleeping near the sides. The firmer surface controls sinkage, so heavier sleepers don’t feel stuck or trapped when they change positions, and the construction helps the bed sleep cool. Motion isolation is moderate given the firm, responsive feel.

The Plus Luxe is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty. Standard shipping is free within the contiguous U.S. For its reinforced support, durability, and dependable policies, it delivers strong value for sleepers who need a bed built to last under greater weight.

The Bottom Line.

The Titan Plus Luxe offers durable, reinforced support built for higher body weights. It’s a dependable pick for heavier sleepers who want firm, lasting support.

  • Sleepers over roughly 230 pounds who need extra reinforcement.
  • Back and stomach sleepers who want a responsive surface.
  • Couples who need strong edge support.

Best OrganicBirch Mattress

BIRCHLIVING.COM

The Birch Mattress earns Best Organic because it combines natural, certified materials with balanced support. For shoppers who care about what goes into their bed, the Natural pairs eco-friendly construction with a comfortable, versatile feel rather than forcing a trade-off between the two. Hot sleepers and back sleepers who want balanced support are also solid candidates for this mattress.

The Birch Mattress features an organic cotton cover over a wool comfort layer, with natural Talalay latex above a steel coil support core. The result is a medium firm feel with the gentle bounce and responsiveness that latex is known for, so you rest on top of the surface rather than sinking into it. The natural materials are highly breathable, which allows air to move through the bed and keeps it sleeping cool. Because latex is more responsive than memory foam, motion isolation is more modest, and the surface offers less contouring for those who want a pronounced hug. The steel coils reinforce edge support and keep the perimeter sturdy.

The Birch Mattress comes with a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty, and standard shipping is free within the contiguous U.S. For its certified natural materials, breathable cooling, and long warranty, it offers strong value for shoppers who prioritize what their mattress is made from.

The Bottom Line.

The Birch Mattress blends organic cotton, natural latex, and wool for a breathable, balanced feel. It’s a standout for eco-conscious shoppers who don’t want to compromise on comfort.

  • Eco-conscious shoppers who want a mattress with natural materials.
  • Hot sleepers who benefit from breathable construction.
  • Back sleepers who want balanced support.

Not Recommended For:

  • Couples who need consistent motion isolation.
  • People who want a mattress that contours closely.

Best Memory FoamLeesa Original

LEESA.COM

The Leesa Original earns Best Memory Foam because it delivers the signature contouring “cradle” feel that fans of foam beds seek out and offers superior motion isolation. When you want to feel gently held rather than propped up, this is a solid mattress pick. People with back pain, couples, and back and side sleepers up to 230 pounds should all be content with this mattress. It’s a classic all-foam experience done well, without the gimmicks that clutter some newer foam beds.

The Leesa Original stacks foam comfort and support layers to create a medium (5) feel that conforms closely to the body. The memory foam relieves pressure at the shoulders and hips with a close-conforming hug, so you settle into the surface rather than resting on top of it. Motion isolation is a real strength — the foam absorbs movement so partners rarely disturb each other, which makes it a natural fit for light sleepers who share a bed. As an all-foam bed, it retains a bit more heat than a hybrid and offers more modest edge support around the perimeter.

The Leesa Original is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty, and it ships free in a compressed box. The trial period gives foam skeptics time to adjust to the close-conforming feel. For its dependable contouring, strong motion isolation, and fair policies, it offers solid value for anyone shopping specifically for a memory-foam feel.

The Bottom Line.

The Leesa Original delivers a classic contouring memory-foam feel with excellent motion isolation. It’s a reliable pick for foam fans and couples of average weight.

  • Memory-foam fans who want a close-conforming hug.
  • Couples who value strong motion isolation.
  • Back and side sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds.

Not Recommended For:

  • Hot sleepers who want maximum cooling.
  • Heavier sleepers who need strong coil support.

Mattress in a Box Buyer's Guide

Read on for more information about purchasing a mattress online. Our comprehensive buyer’s guide includes a few pros and cons of bed-in-a-box models, some shipping and delivery questions for first-time buyers, and some answers to common mattress shopping questions.

What Is a Bed-in-a-Box?

Historically, most mattress purchases took place at brick-and-mortar retail stores. Customers would consult with onsite salespeople to determine the most suitable brand and model, then either leave the store with their new mattress or arrange for home delivery.

The bed-in-a-box trend – which kicked off about 10 years ago – has completely changed the way mattresses are bought and sold. Rather than visiting mattress stores, customers purchase directly from brands via the company’s website. Most of these sites offer detailed product descriptions and live chat options with customer service personnel. Within minutes, shoppers can make their purchase and coordinate home delivery.

Bed-in-a-box mattress models are generally compressed and vacuum-sealed for delivery, then shipped in boxes to the purchaser’s residence. Some companies offer in-home assembly and old mattress removal, as well. Customers may test out their mattress for a predetermined length of time – also known as the company’s sleep trial – before choosing to keep the bed, return it for a refund, or exchange it for another size or model.

Today, mattress shoppers can choose from a wide range of bed-in-a-box models. These include various materials and designs, firmness and thickness options, and price-points.

Pros and Cons of Mattresses in a Box

  • Most online brands do not operate brick-and-mortar locations or employ commissioned sales staff, both of which can drive down price-points. As a result, bed-in-a-box models typically costs much less than models sold in stores.
  • Purchasing a mattress online is a fairly quick and convenient process, whereas visiting a mattress store can be time-consuming.
  • Onsite mattress salespeople have been known to pressure customers into purchasing certain models. Websites offer a much more relaxed and pressure-free environment for shoppers.
  • The vast majority of online mattress brands offer free shipping and returns within the contiguous U.S.
  • Most sleep trials from online mattress brands last at least 90 nights, and some exceed one year in length. Customers should receive sufficient time for testing out their new bed and determining whether or not it suits their needs.

Cons

  • Customers cannot test out a mattress before placing their order. Sleep trials can help them make a final decision, but first they must make a purchase.
  • Some online brands sort their customer reviews in a misleading manner, such as displaying more positive ratings before negative ones.
  • Although some brands extend free shipping and returns to Alaska, Hawaii, and/or Canada, customers outside the contiguous U.S. often face steep delivery surcharges.

Ordering a Mattress in a Box

Purchasing a bed-in-a-box is fairly straightforward, and many brands offer user-friendly websites to make the process even easier. We recommend the following steps for buying a mattress online.

  1. Comparison shop. Comparing different brands and models is the best way to find a suitable mattress. Pay close attention to firmness levels, thickness measurements, customer reviews, prices, and shipping rates.
  2. Review the final choice. After selecting a model, take time to peruse the bed’s product page one last time. Contact customer support on the brand’s website (if available) if questions or concerns arise. If web chat is not available, consider placing a call or sending an email to the company.
  3. Double-check the size. Purchasers should measure their bed frame and bedroom to ensure their desired size will fit. Some bed-in-a-box brands will not provide refunds or exchanges for different mattress sizes, so selecting the right dimensions prior to finalizing the order is very important.
  4. Check for discounts. Online mattress brands routinely offer coupons and promotional codes that can knock hundreds of dollars off a bed’s original asking price. Tuck.com also provides mattress discounts for certain brands and models.
  5. Determine the best shipping option. For customers in the contiguous U.S., the cheapest delivery method will most likely be standard ground shipping. Some companies offer expedited ground shipping at an extra charge. White Glove delivery – which includes in-home assembly and old mattress removal – may also be available, but this service is rarely free.
  6. Purchase the mattress. Please note some customers must pay additional charges, such as sales tax and/or recycling fees (more on this in the FAQ below).
  7. Track the order. Once the mattress ships from the company’s facility, purchasers should receive a tracking number to monitor their delivery’s status. Expected wait times vary, but in most cases the customer will receive their bed within 10 business days of their original order. After the mattress ships, the customer’s main point-of-contact will be with the courier company (such as USPS or FedEx), but they can also contact the mattress brand they experience shipping issues.
  8. Make delivery arrangements as needed. For ground shipping orders, the courier will most likely leave the mattress on the customer’s doorstep. Some buyers may need to make special arrangements for a neighbor to retrieve the mattress after delivery, or for the courier to place the box in a secure location. If the purchaser lives in an apartment or condominium, the courier will most likely leave the mattress at the front desk unless requested otherwise.
  9. Unbox and enjoy. To remove a bed-in-a-box from its packaging, customers should carefully cut the plastic wrapping without damaging the mattress. The mattress will slowly expand until reaching its full shape. The recovery process takes about 24 to 48 hours for most beds.

Remember: the mattress brand can provide valuable assistance during each step of this process. Don’t hesitate to reach out via phone, email, or live webchat if questions or problems arise.

Online vs. Brick-and-Mortar Mattress Buying

There are several key differences between buying a mattress in a brick-and-mortar store and ordering a bed-in-a-box online, though there are also a few similarities. The table below illustrates the pros and cons of each.

Criteria Brick-and-Mortar Bed-in-a-Box
Brand Selection High
Customers may select from a wide range of brands and models
Low
Customers are limited to one brand’s mattress selection
Mattress Inventory Customers are limited to the store’s onsite selection, and availability may be limited for some models Online brands typically carry a large inventory, ensuring their supply for each model does not run out
Customer Service Brick-and-mortar stores employ sales specialists to address customer questions and recommend models. While helpful, sales staff can also be somewhat pushy because many work on commission Most bed-in-a-box brands offer live web chat with company personnel. Many also provide customer service phone numbers and/or email addresses.
Mattress Prices Tend to be higher due to overhead costs from brick-and-mortar operations and onsite staff Typically lower, as bed-in-a-box brands usually operate a limited number of physical stores and do not employ commissioned sales staff
Delivery? Many brick-and-mortar mattress stores offer residential delivery, though this service may carry additional charges. Most bed-in-a-box brands offer free shipping within the contiguous U.S. For customers outside the contiguous U.S., steep delivery charges may apply.
Mattress Pickup? Brick-and-mortar customers may be able to pick up their mattress at the store if it is not in-stock at the time of purchase. Store pickups are almost always free-of-charge. Unless the brand operates a physical location or has an agreement with a brick-and-mortar retailer, mattress pickup will not be available.
Sleep Trials and Returns Many brick-and-mortar stores offer sleep trials, but they are generally shorter than those available from bed-in-a-box brands and returns may not be free. Trial periods generally span at least 90 days, and returns are usually free. The company will usually send personnel to the customer’s house to retrieve the mattress and either donate it to charity or drop it off at a recycling facility.

Bed-in-a-Box FAQ

  • How Do Bed-in-a-Box Exchanges Work?

For brands that allow mattress exchanges during the sleep trial, customers must first contact customer service. Those who select a more expensive size or model will need to pay an additional upgrade charge, while cheaper sizes or models will usually result in a partial refund.

In most cases, the company will arrange for personnel to pick up the old mattress from the customer’s residence. The personnel may also drop off the new model, or it will be delivered via standard shipping.

  • Does Compressing the Mattress for Shipping Cause Permanent Damage?

No – at least, it shouldn’t. Bed-in-a-box models are designed to be compressed for shipping, then expand to their full shape once the plastic wrapping has been removed. If damage does occur, it is probably due to a defect with that particular model or mishandling during shipping, rather than an issue with the mattress design. Customers should contact the mattress brand immediately to report any type of damage to their mattress upon delivery or unboxing.

  • Why Do Customers in Certain States Pay Additional Charges at Checkout?

By law, customers living in certain states must pay sales tax for their mattress purchase. In states that do not have a sales tax, this extra charge will not be applied to the purchase.

Additionally, customers in California, Connecticut, and Rhode Island must pay a mandatory mattress recycling fee when buying a new bed. This fee ranges from $9 to $10.50, depending on the state.

  • How Long Before Mattresses Reach the Customer's Address?

Mattresses that are made-to-order may take several days to assemble, while pre-made beds will be ready to ship once the customer’s order is finished. In any case, buyers should expect their mattress to arrive in 10 days or less after it ships from the company’s warehouse or manufacturing facility.

Specific wait times vary by courier. Customers who live in remote locations and/or purchase mattresses during busier times of the year (such as holiday shopping periods) may have a longer wait time.

  • Can Customers Choose a Date and Time for Their Mattress Delivery?

Bed-in-a-box brands typically coordinate free ground shipping with UPS, FedEx, and other couriers. By rule, these couriers usually do not allow customers to select a specific date and time for their delivery. However, they may be able to accommodate buyers in some circumstances. Contact the courier if conflicts occur with the expected delivery date.

  • Do Customers Need to Be at Home When the Mattress Arrives?

Standard mattress deliveries do not require a customer signature, nor does anyone need to be at home when the bed arrives. However, those who are concerned about “porch pirates” or other security issues may wish to be on hand to meet their courier.

  • Can Customers Return Their Mattress at Any Point During a Sleep Trial?

This depends on the mattress brand. For some sleep trials, the customer may return their mattress at any point for a full refund. Other brands want buyers to “break in” the mattress for a certain amount of time before returning it, and will not issue full refunds until a certain amount of time has elapsed – 30 nights, in most cases.
