- Sleepers who prefer mattresses with moderate firmness levels. The Molecule 1 has a medium-soft feel while the Molecule 2 is medium. Both models are suitable for those who prefer a balance of body-conforming and even support.
- People who weigh 230 pounds or less. Although the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 mattresses have earned favorable ratings from sleep testers across different body types, the most positive feedback came from those in the lightweight and average weight groups.
- Couples. The Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 each absorb motion and isolate transfer very well, and both beds are virtually silent when bearing weight. These two characteristics make the beds ideal for people who awaken easily due to their co-sleeper’s movements.
Not Recommended for...
- People who weigh more than 230 pounds. Due to their softer feels and close body-conforming, the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 may not be firm or supportive enough for sleepers in the heavyweight group.
- Sleepers who prefer more responsive mattresses. The Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 respond to the body slowly and conform very closely, resulting in a feeling akin to sleeping “in” – as opposed to “on” – the mattress. People who prefer springier beds that do not conform as much may not find either Molecule model comfortable.

How Are the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 Constructed?
Both the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 have covers made from a blend of 98 percent polyester and 2 percent Lycra spandex. The cover fabric has a very soft and stretchy feel. If staining occurs, Molecule suggests spot-cleaning the cover with a damp cloth or sponge.
The Molecule 1 has a 2-inch comfort layer of open-cell memory foam. The material has an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 9, indicating exceptional softness and close body-conforming. It also has a low density of 2.5 PCF, making it more susceptible to sagging and early deterioration.
The Molecule 2 also has a 2-inch comfort layer with an ILD of 9, but the material consists of proprietary polyfoam with a density of 3 PCF. Although this is still considered low-density, the foam has a noticeably denser feel compared to the Molecule 1’s comfort layer. The Molecule 2 is slightly firmer, as well.
The Molecule 1 has a 3-inch polyfoam transitional layer. This material is divided into three firmness zones, with firmer foam supporting the sleeper’s shoulders, back, and hips while softer foam cradles the head, neck, and legs.
The Molecule 2 also has a 3-inch polyfoam transitional layer, but this material is divided into five distinct firmness zones. The two extra zones are located around the midsection, and intended to offer enhanced support to the sleeper’s lower back.
Both foam layers have densities of 1.65, which is considered high-density, and ILDs of 40, indicating exceptionally firm feels. In addition to providing zoned support, these transitional layers act as buffers between the comfort and support layers, and the material prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress.
The Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 both have 7-inch support cores composed of 1.5 PCF high-density polyfoam with ILD of 35s, indicating very firm feels. These support cores work with the denser transitional layers to maintain overall stability and keep sleepers on an even plane.
Both the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 measure 12.25 inches thick, making them high-profile models. Their above-average heights ensure plenty of space for soft, closely conforming comfort materials and zoned transitional layers without sacrificing a thick support core. As a result, most sleepers weighing 230 pounds or less experience close body-conforming without sinking too deeply – but due to their medium-soft/medium feels, Molecule mattresses may be too soft for some heavier people.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?
The Molecule 1 is considered medium-soft. The memory foam comfort layer conforms very closely to the body in order to alleviate pressure points in the sleeper’s most sensitive areas, and can also improve spinal alignment for side sleepers. The Molecule 1 is not very responsive, and best suited to those who prefer sleeping “in” – not sleeping “on” – their mattress.
The Molecule 2 has a medium feel. The comfort layer conforms somewhat closely, but it does not provide as much of a deep, pressure-relieving body cradle as the softer Molecule 1. That said, the Molecule 2 is not very responsive, either. The mattress is a good option for sleepers who like a balance of body-contouring and even support, including heavier individuals who sink too deeply into the Molecule 1.
Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as experiences from verified Molecule mattress owners.
Molecule mattresses have been available to the public since 2018, and we have not had enough time to test these models against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability ratings for the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 are based on the quality of construction and materials, owner experiences, and Molecule’s overall reputation.
We expect both Molecule mattresses to perform for about six and a half years before replacements are needed. These expected lifespans are on par with the average all-foam model. The Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 each have low-density comfort layers that will likely deteriorate somewhat quickly. Over time, owners may notice body impressions in the sleep surface – a common issue with all-foam beds – but the thick, high-density support systems found in these mattresses should prevent significant sagging.
In order to protect their mattress from deep impressions and preserve its overall lifespan, we encourage Molecule owners to rotate their mattress head-to-foot every three to six months.
To evaluate the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 for motion isolation, we asked two sleep testers to lie down side-by-side on each mattress. One tester moved around while the other felt for motion transferring across the surface. During these tests, both Molecule models demonstrated very good motion isolation. The comfort layers absorb movement exceptionally, eliminating most transfer for co-sleepers.
All-foam mattresses generally excel at motion isolation because they are not very responsive. Other mattress types – such as latex, innerspring, and hybrid models – are made from springier materials that do not reduce transfer to the same degree.
Our testers noticed some initial off-gassing when unboxing the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2. However, these smells had mostly dissipated when they re-evaluated each model a few days later. Both mattresses have low-density comfort layers that do not trap much odor, allowing them to air out rather quickly once they have been removed from their shipping boxes.
To evaluate the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 for pressure relief, our testers took turns lying on a sensory pad that monitors pressure build-up in the shoulders, hips, and other sensitive areas of the body. They also shifted positions to see if pressure increased or decreased when lying on their sides, back, or stomach.
The Molecule 1 conforms very closely, and offers very good pressure relief for side and back sleepers weighing 230 pounds or less. However, the mattress may feel too soft for some people, heavier back and stomach sleepers in particular. This can cause excessive sagging and added pressure for these individuals.
The Molecule 2 is slightly firmer than the Molecule 1. This makes the mattress more suitable for heavier individuals, but the foam conforms closely enough for many lighter people. As a result, the Molecule 2 offers excellent pressure relief across different body types and sleep positions, and outperforms the Molecule 1 in this category.
The Molecule 1 is constructed with open-cell memory foam, a material that usually retains less body heat than denser foam. That said, the mattress conforms very closely, which can restrict surface airflow and make sleepers feel hotter than normal.
The Molecule 2’s open-cell comfort layer has a firmer feel than the Molecule 1’s and does not conform as closely to sleepers, resulting in better airflow across the surface. However, the Molecule 2 may still trap body heat and feel excessively warm for some sleepers due to its all-foam construction.
All-foam mattresses often sleep too hot because of their solid internal components, which do not promote much – if any – interior airflow. Hybrids and innersprings tend to be the best mattresses for hot sleepers because their coil systems circulate air much better.
To evaluate the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 for edge support, our testers sat along the perimeter of each model as an owner might do when getting in and out of bed. The testers noticed significant sinkage on each mattress. This can be attributed to their all-foam designs, as polyfoam – even with a high density – does not withstand compression very well compared to the coils found in hybrids and innersprings.
Our testers also took turns lying near the edges of each mattress to check for feelings of “roll-off.” Again, none of the testers felt particularly stable near the perimeter of either Molecule model.
During our tests, the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 were completely silent. This is typical for all-foam mattresses because they lack internal components associated with disruptive noises, such as the coils found in innersprings and hybrids, or the motorized air chambers found in airbeds.
This characteristic, coupled with very good motion isolation, make the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 well suited to people who awaken easily due to their sleep partner’s movements.
Neither the Molecule 1 or Molecule 2 are particularly responsive, and these mattresses may not be springy enough for some couples. The comfort layers conform closely to provide good traction during sex. However, couples may sink too deeply, which can prevent them from using the entire mattress surface and cause difficulty when changing positions.
The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, our team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.
Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.
The best lightweight tester ratings for the Molecule 1 came from back sleepers. They noted a comfortable balance of body-conforming and support, resulting in good pressure relief without too much sagging. Side and stomach sleepers in this weight group experienced some sagging, particularly around the midsection – but overall, these testers awarded positive ratings to the mattress.
Side sleepers in the lightweight group preferred the Molecule 2, which cushions the hips and shoulders for even spinal alignment without sagging too much. Back sleepers also gave the Molecule 2 very good ratings. Like the Molecule 1, this model offers decent body-conforming and even support, resulting in adequate pressure relief and minimal sagging. For stomach sleepers, the Molecule 2 was a bit more supportive but they still sagged a bit around the waist.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.
Our sleep testers weighing 130 to 230 pounds awarded identical ratings to both Molecule mattresses. Side sleepers in this weight group felt very comfortable on both, as each Molecule mattress provides ample padding for the hips and shoulders to ensure even spinal alignment. Average weight back sleepers also found the mattress comfortable and supportive in equal measure.
As with those in the lightweight group, our average weight stomach sleepers experienced some sagging around the midsection while lying on the Molecule 1. The Molecule 2 sagged a bit less, but still lacked even support. Many stomach sleepers carry a fair amount of weight in their midsections, and sleeping face-down can cause their bodies to sink too deeply. Softer surfaces – like those found on the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 – can exacerbate this issue.
Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.
Our heavyweight sleepers were somewhat mixed in their ratings for the Molecule 1. Side sleepers sank a bit too deeply into the mattress, resulting in added pressure around the shoulders and hips. Back sleepers felt reasonably comfortable, but also noticed some sagging in places. Lastly, stomach sleepers in the heavyweight group noted excessive sagging around the waist, and this made the mattress feel unsupportive.
Ratings were slightly better for the Molecule 2 among our heavier side, back, and stomach sleepers. Though the mattress is still a bit too soft for most people weighing more than 230 pounds, its mid-level firmness provides better support for those with larger bodies.

How Do Molecule Mattresses Compare to Other Beds?
We encourage all mattress shoppers to browse different brands and models in order to find their most suitable option. In this next section, we’ll see how the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 stack up against similarly constructed mattresses from other brands.
Molecule vs. Bear
The Bear Mattress is constructed with a memory foam comfort layer over transitional and base layers of high-density polyfoam. The mattress is considered medium (5.5) and has a very similar feel to the Molecule 2. However, the Bear Mattress is also more responsive for sleepers, and provides a feeling of both sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress, as opposed to the Molecule models that hug the body much more closely.
The Bear Mattress shares other similarities with the Molecule 2, as well. Sleepers don’t sink too deeply into either mattress, resulting in a good balance of body-conforming and support. This also ensures steady surface airflow and good temperature neutrality. Additionally, the Bear Mattress – like the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 – isolates motion very well and alleviates pressure for most sleepers weighing 230 pounds or less.
The Bear Mattress costs slightly less than the Molecule 1, and considerably less than the Molecule 2, making it a high-value pick. However, the Molecule models are better suited to sleepers seeking the enhanced bodily support of a zoned mattress.
Molecule vs. Casper
The Casper Mattress is a mixed-foam model featuring polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers. With a medium (5) feel, the mattress falls between the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 in terms of firmness, and is best suited to sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less.
Like Molecule mattresses, the Casper Mattress provides excellent pressure relief for most lightweight and average weight sleepers, and also isolates motion very well. Additionally, the Casper Mattress lacks strong edge support and tends to sink along the perimeter. In terms of temperature neutrality, the Casper Mattress may trap heat for some but generally sleeps cooler than many of its all-foam competitors. This model and the Molecule 2 have earned comparable ratings in the temperature neutrality category, whereas the Molecule 1 sleeps a bit warmer than both.
The Casper Mattress and Molecule 1 are comparably priced, and both are considered high-value models due to their low price-points. A top polyfoam layer gives the Casper Mattress a light bounce, making it a good option for people who want more responsive all-foam beds, while the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 are best suited to those who enjoy sleeping “in” their mattress.
Molecule vs. Layla
The flippable Layla Mattress is constructed with one medium-soft side that conforms closely, and a firm side that feels more supportive. This design allows sleepers to shift between two firmness options, giving the Layla Mattress more night-to-night versatility than either Molecule model.
Like the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2, the Layla excels at pressure relief and motion isolation, and is also susceptible to deep sinkage along the edges. One key difference is overall support. The Layla Mattress has a support core measuring 4.5 inches. By comparison, both Molecule models have 7-inch base layers reinforced with zoned transitional layers. As a result, both Molecule mattresses provide a more even plane for sleepers than the Layla Mattress.
The Layla Mattress and Molecule 1 have similar price-points, making either a good choice for budget-minded shoppers. Those who like the idea of flipping between two firmness levels should consider the Layla Mattress, but the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2 offer more support.
Molecule vs. Loom & Leaf
The Loom & Leaf by Saatva is constructed with two layers of memory foam over a high-density polyfoam base. Like the Molecule models, the Loom & Leaf provides a deep, pressure-relieving cradle for the sleeper’s body that is akin to sleeping “in” the mattress, but the mattress also has a strong support system to keep sleepers on an even plane.
Shoppers can choose from two firmness options for their Loom & Leaf, medium (5.5) or firm (8). The medium feel is very comparable to the Molecule 2’s, while the firm option feels more supportive and conforms much less. Heavier individuals – back or stomach sleepers in particular – will likely prefer the firm Loom & Leaf over either Molecule model. In other performance categories, such as motion isolation and pressure relief, the Loom & Leaf, Molecule 1, and Molecule 2 have all earned similar firmness ratings.
The Loom & Leaf and Molecule 2 have identical price-points in a queen-size, but customers should note that Saatva offers free White Glove delivery – including old mattress removal – for all Loom & Leaf orders in the contiguous U.S.
Molecule vs. Nectar
The Nectar Mattress is built with three layers of memory foam, along with a high-density polyfoam base. The mattress has a medium-firm feel but still conforms very closely to the sleeper’s body. Like the Molecule models, the Nectar Mattress is optimal for those who prefer sleeping “in” the mattress.
In most performance categories, the Nectar Mattress and both Molecule models have earned similar ratings. The Nectar Mattress isolates motion very well, does not produce any noise, and provides excellent pressure relief. However, its firmer feel also makes the Nectar Mattress better suited to heavier people than either Molecule mattress, and edge support for this model is better than average thanks to its dense support layers.
The Nectar Mattress costs considerably less than either Molecule model, and also comes with a 365-night sleep trial. Lighter people may choose the Molecule 1 or Molecule 2 due to their softer feels, but we recommend the Nectar Mattress to heavier people who need more support from their bed.
Molecule vs. Tuft & Needle
The T&N Mattress from Tuft & Needle is an all-polyfoam mattress constructed with a graphite-infused top layer and a high-density base. The mattress is medium-firm, making it noticeably firmer than both the Molecule 1 and Molecule 2. It is also more responsive due to its all-polyfoam design, and best suited to those who like a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” their mattress.
Like Molecule mattresses, the T&N Mattress absorbs movement from sleepers and minimizes transfer very well. The mattress also lacks strong edge support, and sinkage is very likely to occur along the perimeter. We also found the T&N Mattress earned the most favorable ratings from average weight mattress testers – back and side sleepers in particular.
The T&N Mattress is very inexpensive compared to either Molecule model. Sleepers who like medium-firm feels and more responsiveness from an all-foam bed should consider the T&N Mattress, while Molecule mattresses are better for people who like softer surfaces and sleeping “in” their mattress.

Full Delivery Policy
The delivery policy for Molecule mattresses is as follows:
- All Molecule Mattress deliveries are coordinated through FedEx. Most customers receive their mattress within one week of placing their order.
- Delivery is free for all customers in the contiguous U.S. Customers in Alaska and Hawaii must pay additional shipping charges.
- Customers do not need to be at home to receive their mattress delivery; all packages will be left on their doorstep or with the front office if delivering to an apartment.
- Once the mattress has been removed from its packaging, it should fully expand within 24 to 72 hours.
Trial Period and Warranty Details
Trial Period and Guarantee: Molecule offers a 100-night sleep trial for all mattress owners.
- The sleep trial includes a mandatory 30-night break-in period. Customers may not request a return until at least 30 nights have elapsed.
- The sleep trial officially begins on the date of purchase. Returns are typically processed within three business days.
- Customers who request a return will receive a full refund (minus any applicable discounts) once the mattress has been removed from their home.
- One return is allotted per customer or household.
Warranty: Molecule offers a lifetime limited warranty on all mattresses.
- This warranty is entirely nonprorated.
- Molecule will, at its sole discretion, repair or replace any defective Molecule Mattress for the duration of its ownership.
- This warranty is contingent on proper foundational support. Per Molecule: ‘Your Molecule Mattress is designed to work on a firm, solid, non–spring foundation or adjustable bed base that is sufficiently strong and stable so as to be capable of supporting the weight of the mattress and its occupants. Failure to use an appropriate foundation will void your Limited Warranty.’
- The warranty will cover sagging and indentations in the sleep surface measuring 1 inch or deeper. The warranty also covers manufacturing flaws in the mattress, such as unraveling stitches or broken zippers.
- The warranty will not cover sagging or indentations measuring less than 1 inch. Additionally, the warranty does not cover repair or replacement requests that occur due to changes in the owner’s comfort preferences, or physical damage such as burns, cuts, and stains.
- If a claim needs to be made, owners must submit a written description and photographic evidence of the defect, along with the original order number and name of the person who placed the order. Molecule will respond to warranty claims within seven business days.
- This warranty is exclusively offered to original owners who purchase their mattress from Molecule or an authorized retailer. Those who buy or acquire their mattress from the original owner or a non-authorized retailer will not be eligible for warranty coverage.
