WinkBed Mattress Overview

WinkBed Mattress Overview

WinkBeds is a direct-to-consumer mattress company headquartered in New York. The company’s original mattress, the WinkBed, is a luxury hybrid — merging medium-density polyfoam and a zoned, innerspring pocketed coil core.

The 14.5 inch WinkBed mattress is constructed with a top layer of 1.5 PCF polyfoam followed by a secondary layer of gel polyfoam over a layer of foam-encased pocketed micro coils and a 7.5 inch support core of polyfoam-encased pocketed coils. It’s covered with a breathable, natural, eucalyptus-based TENCEL™ lyocell cover.

Customers can choose between four firmness options: Soft (4.5), Luxury Firm (6.5), Firmer (7.5), and Plus (8) on the 1-10 firmness scale.

This review will take an in-depth look at the WinkBed mattress in terms of construction, pricing, and overall performance. We’ll also compare it with similar mattresses and discuss the shipping, return, and warranty policies of WinkBeds.

  • Sleepers over 300 lbs. The comfort layer of the WinkBed Plus replaces microcoils with a 2.5 inch layer of latex to provide more support for heavier sleepers, promoting spinal alignment and pressure relief. The Plus also has strong edge support, making it easy to get in and out of.
  • Couples who prefer the feel of an innerspring mattress. Our testing found that the WinkBed is responsive but isolates motion well for a hybrid, meaning less waking up when your partner moves. The WinkBed’s excellent edge support maximizes the usable surface area, making it great for sex.
  • Sleepers with back pain. The WinkBed rated highly among our sleep testers who experience back pain. This mattress combines a cotton lumbar pad with a zoned pocketed coil support core which provides reinforced support to the lower back.

Not Recommended for...

  • Lightweight side sleepers. Although our testing found that the WinkBed provides good support for lightweight sleepers, the firmer options can create pressure along the hips and shoulders for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 lbs.

WinkBed Awards

Based on positive ratings from our testing teams and mattress owners, the WinkBed has earned the following awards in our Mattress Guides.

How Is the WinkBed Constructed?

Cover

The WinkBeds Mattress has a breathable cover made from stretch-knit TENCEL™ lyocell, a natural eucalyptus-based fabric. The lyocell cover is soft, sleeps cool, and wicks away heat.

Comfort Layers

The first three firmness options for the WinkBed mattress have a two-part Euro-pillow top comfort layer. The first part is made up of 1 inch of 1.5 PCF polyfoam and a 1 inch layer of 1.5 PCF gel polyfoam which sleeps cooler than other foams. The second part includes a layer of 2.5 inches of foam-encased pocketed microcoils and a cotton lumbar pad for added spinal support.

The combination of the two gives this bed a responsive, springy surface that conforms without sinking into the mattress.

The Plus firmness option of the WinkBed mattress is a bit different, offering more support for heavy sleepers. The Plus model still comes with the 1 inch of cooling 1.5 PCF gel polyfoam but has no microcoil layer. Instead, it has with a 2.5 inch layer of extra-soft latex. The latex provides spinal support by giving heavyweight sleepers more responsive material to sink into.

This model also includes a cotton lumbar pad for added spinal support.

Support Layers

The WinkBed’s support core is consistent among all firmness options. It’s made up of a 7.5 inch pocketed coil support system (containing 858 coils) which is split into 5 zones for targeted back support and spinal alignment. The zones are built to provide firmer support in some areas (such as the lumbar region), and softer support in others (such as the shoulders and feet).

The core is encased by 2 inches of 1.8 PCF polyfoam, providing increased motion isolation and durability.

The WinkBed also features a reinforced foam-encased pocketed microcoil perimeter that goes right to the edge of the mattress for excellent edge support.

Mattress Height

The total height of the WinkBed mattress is 14.5 inches for all firmness options, including the Plus. With average mattresses measuring around 10 inches, some sleepers find the taller WinkBed mattress easier to get in and out of.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The WinkBed offers three standard firmness options: Soft, which corresponds to a medium soft (or 4.5) on the mattress firmness scale; Luxury Firm, a medium firm (6.5); and Firmer, coming in at firm (7.5).

Additionally, the WinkBed offers a fourth firmness option — the Plus, which is specifically designed for sleepers who weigh more than 300 pounds. The Plus corresponds to a firm (8) on our scale.

The WinkBed has a zoned pocketed coil support core which helps relieve back pain by providing targeted support to the lumbar region. Customers with back pain reported high satisfaction with this mattress and our testing backed this up. The WinkBed’s four firmness options maintain spinal support while offering a range of feels that suit a wide array of customers.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, we’ll take a closer look at each performance rating we gave to the WinkBed. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, along with reviews from verified WinkBed owners.

Durability

WinkBeds is a new company, having only been established in 2016. So, we’re assessing the lifespan of the bed based on the quality of materials.

The WinkBed is made up of medium-density polyfoam layers and a strong pocketed coil support core. The WinkBed uses strong coils, ranging from 14.5 to 16 gauge. While the polyfoam comfort layer may start to show signs of wear after a few years, the coils should last at least the average mattress lifespan of 7-8 years.

The WinkBed is built to support average-to-heavyweight sleepers, but there is always the possibility of body impressions over time.

Motion Isolation

Our test sleepers found the WinkBed to have good motion isolation. While some movement was felt during the test, the overall motion isolation of the mattress was found to be better than most hybrids. The foam layers of the WinkBed absorb motion, but the pocketed coil support core created some bounce, which was felt by our sleep testers when their partners moved.

Although we found the WinkBed to perform fairly well, a hybrid will not have the motion isolation ability that an all-foam mattress does. Sleepers who are sensitive to movement should keep this in mind, as an all-foam mattress might be a better choice for them.

Off-Gassing

After first unwrapping the WinkBed, our test sleepers noticed very little initial odor from this polyfoam, hybrid mattress. Any odor that was present, faded after a few hours. Within a day it was completely undetectable.

Customers, especially those with a heightened sense of smell, can expect some initial odor within the first few hours of unpacking their mattress, but nothing that will last longer than a day.

Pressure Relief

Our test team found that the WinkBed offers great pressure relief for sleepers of all styles and weights, conforming to the sleeper’s body without creating a sinking feeling. The WinkBed is a firmer mattress and we found it to have good spinal support for sleepers of all weights and styles. The support core is separated into 5 zones, providing individual support and pressure relief for each area of the sleeper’s body.

However, our pressure-mapping tools found that lighter weight side sleepers might find some pressure point pain in their hips and shoulders. In this case, we recommend WinkBed’s softest mattress option, Soft, for lightweight side sleepers who need a more conforming feel.

Temperature Neutrality

Hybrids tend to sleep cooler than all foam mattresses because pocketed coils allow for greater airflow, and the WinkBed was no exception. Our testers found the bed slept cooler than many other hybrids. The gel-infused polyfoam in the comfort layer sleeps cooler than other, more dense foam materials.

The pocketed coil core allows air to move throughout the mattress while the breathable lyocell cover absorbs moisture and aids airflow. The WinkBed is a good choice for people who tend to sleep hot.

Edge Support

winkbeds luxury firm edge support

The WinkBed has some of the best edge support we’ve seen in our testing. We tested the WinkBed by having different sleepers sit, lay, and roll along the edge of the bed. Testers in all weight categories found that they were well-supported when getting in and out of the WinkBed as well as when they were sitting or sleeping on the edges of the mattress.

Our sleep testers also found that they could use the entire surface of the mattress without the feeling of rolling or falling off the bed.

The WinkBed’s Extra-Edge™ support system, made of higher gauge coils, goes closer to the edge of the bed than many other mattresses, giving it a larger surface area. The WinkBed is a great choice for couples as the reinforced edge allows them to utilize the entire surface of the bed to spread out and sleep comfortably.

Noise

We found the WinkBed to be a quiet bed. Our testers who slept with a partner didn’t notice any noise during their sleep trial. While the foam layers of this mattress are silent, and help absorb some sound, the pocketed coil support core may begin to creak over time.

All-foam mattresses are virtually silent, while hybrids or innerspring mattresses can make slight noises. Unless a sleeper is highly sensitive to noise, this mattress shouldn’t disrupt their sleep. Sleepers who are sensitive to sound may prefer an all-foam mattress option.

Sex

Our sleep testers rated the WinkBed excellent for sex because of its responsiveness, edge support, and minimal noise. The WinkBed’s responsive, springy surface with excellent bounce, ensure that people are supported by this mattress, not sinking into it. The sturdy perimeter of the WinkBed means that customers won’t have to worry about rolling or shifting off of the bed when close to the edge.

As for noise, the WinkBed is quieter than most hybrids due to its polyfoam comfort layer, so customers don’t have to worry about their movement creating loud noises.

Sleeper Ratings

Now, let’s discuss our sleeper ratings for the WinkBeds Mattress.

Mattress preferences are personal, however, the ideal firmness and thickness settings largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, the our team evaluated the WinkBed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Our lightweight sleep testers found the WinkBed to be very good for every sleep position. The Plus option, however, did not rate well for lightweight sleepers. It’s designed to support heavyweight sleepers and felt too firm to our sleep testers, creating pressure in their shoulders and hips. We found that the Soft and Luxury Firm options are better suited to lightweight sleepers.

These softer options conform to pressure points in the shoulders and hips while providing a body-hugging feel. Overall the WinkBed rated well among our lightweight sleep testers and would be a good choice for lightweight sleepers who suffer from back pain.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Our average weight sleep testers who sleep on their backs had a very good night’s sleep on the WinkBed. Our sleep testers who sleep on their sides or stomachs were even more impressed with the WinkBed as the zoned pocketed coil core of this mattress combines with polyfoam comfort layers to support the sleeper’s spine and joints without feeling too firm.

The thicker coils in the center of the mattress, and the lumbar pad, make this a great choice for folks suffering from back pain. We recommend the WinkBed’s Luxury Firm option for sleepers between 130 and 230 pounds as it offers ample support while still conforming to the sleeper’s body.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

The WinkBed Plus shined in our heavyweight sleeper trials. Our heavyweight testers found this mattress to be supportive and conforming without the feeling of sinking into the bed. The Plus is a firmness option designed specifically for heavyweight sleepers – it has enough responsiveness to support them without sagging.

Made with latex, and a zoned support core, our test team reported that it provided excellent spinal support no matter their sleep style. Our team recommends the Plus for sleepers weighing 300 lbs or more or for heavyweight sleepers who prefer a firm mattress feel. For heavyweight sleepers who prefer to sink into a mattress, the WinkBed’s less dense, Firmer option may be the best choice.

How Does the WinkBed Compare to Other Beds?

Mattress comparison is an important part of the mattress shopping experience. We encourage our readers to be informed consumers and strive to provide you with the information you need to do so. To get a better feel for where the WinkBed stacks up against similar mattress options, read through our comparisons below.

WinkBed vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora is a hybrid mattress with a pocketed coil and high-density polyfoam support core and additional comfort layers made from polyfoam and memory foam. It’s soft and conforming without too much sinking and sagging on the surface providing added support and motion isolation.

The surface is infused with a proprietary phase-change molecule that helps with temperature regulation. The coils also offer good airflow and when combined with the breathable cotton cover, create a very cool sleep experience. While the WinkBed also has cooling components and was rated highly in this category, the Aurora is one of the coolest mattresses we’ve tested.

Like the WinkBed, the Aurora comes in multiple firmness options: ‘Soft’ (3.5), ‘Medium-Firm’(5.5), and ‘Firm’(7.5), however, the WinkBed Plus rated higher among heavyweight sleepers. With both beds coming in at a similar price point, we recommend the Aurora for those who tend to sleep hot and are looking for a mattress that is proven to sleep cooler.

WinkBed vs. Saatva

The Saatva is an eco-friendly, coil-on-coil innerspring mattress with comfort layers made from polyfoam, memory foam, and recycled-steel pocketed coils. The Support core features bonnell coils while the organic cotton Euro-style pillow-top cover is padded with extra polyfoam. The Saatva offers sturdy sleeper support and good pressure relief.

Like the WinkBed, the Saatva is available in multiple firmness settings – ‘Medium Soft’ (4), ‘Medium Firm’ (6), and ‘Firm’ (7.5). Although the Saatva is suitable for most sleepers regardless of their size or sleep style, the WinkBed stands out with its Plus firmness option for heavier sleepers.

A major difference between these two beds is that the WinkBed is a hybrid, while the Saatva is a coil-on-coil innerspring. This means that the WinkBed scored higher in categories such as motion isolation due to its memory foam components. We recommend the Saatva for eco-conscious customers who tend to sleep hot and who prefer the feel of an innerspring mattress. Read more about these two beds in our complete Saatva vs. WinkBeds Mattress Comparison.

WinkBed vs. DreamCloud

The DreamCloud is a hybrid mattress made up of a pocketed innerspring coil support core, a gel memory foam comfort layer, and transitional layers of memory foam and polyfoam topped with a Euro-style cover. The makeup of this bed is similar to the WinkBed, but the WinkBed is more suited to a wide range of sleepers, offering multiple firmness options.

The DreamCloud has a firmness level of 6.5, making it suitable for most average sleepers, but not as comfortable or supportive for lightweight side sleepers or heavy sleepers who prefer a firmer mattress feel.

While both mattresses are recommended for couples, the DreamCloud rated better for sex due to it’s slightly deeper coil support core and it’s responsive foam comfort layer. We recommend the DreamCloud for noise-sensitive customers who prefer a hybrid mattress feel, or for those with chronic back pain, as it offers excellent spinal support.

Read our complete DreamCloud Mattress Review.

WinkBed vs. Bear Hybrid

The Bear Hybrid is a five-layer mattress with a 14? height profile and a ‘medium’ (5.5) feel. We found that the Bear Hybrid sleeps exceptionally cool thanks to the Celliant ™ technology in its cover, and it’s pocketed coil core which boosts airflow. The Bear Hybrid is topped with a thick, 5-inch comfort system consisting of a cooling gel foam quilted into the top, and a transitional layer of responsive polyfoam.

Like the WinkBed, the individually pocketed coil core also provides sleepers ample support while promoting airflow. Although the Bear Hybrid rated well among our average sleepers, it did not rate as well for all sleeper sizes and styles as the WinkBed. Heavyweight sleepers especially preferred the WinkBed over the Bear Hybrid because of its much firmer feel.

With a comparable price-point, the Bear Hybrid is particularly well suited to sleepers who sleep hot.

Read our complete Bear Hybrid Mattress Review.

WinkBed vs. T&N Hybrid

The T&N Hybrid is a hybrid mattress with layers of cooling polyfoam, micro-coils, and transition foam over a support base of pocketed coils. The T&N’s feel is a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, or a ‘medium’ feel, making it similar to the WinkBed’s ‘medium’ firmness option.

The T&N Hybrid is generally suitable for sleepers of a variety of different weight groups and sleeping positions, making it a good middle of the road option for couples. The WinkBed is available in a wider variety of firmness options, from soft to firm. Sleepers that are on the lighter or heavier ends of the spectrum may want to go for one of the specialized firmnesses of the WinkBed.

The T&N Hybrid mattress is available at a similar price to the WinkBed, as both are solid hybrid mattress options. The T&N Hybrid is a great bet for a variety of sleepers and good at meeting multiple differing preferences at once. Heavier sleepers, especially stomach sleepers, will likely want the support that a firmer WinkBed can provide. The two mattresses perform similarly on a variety of performance metrics, making them both good choices for sleepers who tend to sleep hot.
