What You Need to Know about the Tempur-Pedic Mattress

Mattress Type and Components:

  • Tempur-Pedic offers memory foam mattresses. These models feature memory foam layers, polyfoam support cores, and covers woven from polyester.
  • Tempur-Pedic’s 11 memory foam mattress models are divided into two mattress series:
    • Cloud: Mattresses in the Cloud series are less firm, though individual firmness ratings vary by model. The current models in this series are: Prima, Supreme, Supreme Breeze, Elite, Luxe, and Luxe Breeze. Previous models of the Supreme Breeze and Luxe Breeze mattresses are also available for purchase on the Tempur-Pedic website, but this review will focus on current models only.
    • Contour: Mattresses in the Contour series are more firm; as with the Cloud series, the firmness levels of Contour mattresses vary by model. The current models in this series are: Supreme, Elite, Elite Breeze, and Rhapsody Luxe. Previous models of the Supreme Breeze and Luxe Breeze mattresses are also available for purchase at a discounted rate on the Tempur-Pedic website, but this review will focus on current models only.
  • Additionally, please note the following product variations:
    • GrandBed: The GrandBed is technically part of the Contour series, but is distinct from other Contour models because it has a dual-layer comfort layer. The GrandBed is sold separately from other Contour models, as well.
    • Breeze: This subset of Cloud and Contour mattresses features comfort layers and covers designed to reduce heat retention and sleep cooler than other Tempur-Pedic models. Three models are currently included in this subset: the Cloud Supreme Breeze, Cloud Luxe Breeze, and Contour Elite Breeze.
    • Please note: Tempur-Pedic also sells hybrid mattresses as part of the Flex series. For more information on these products, please visit our Tempur-Pedic Hybrid Mattress Review.

Pros:

  • Tempur-Pedic is widely considered to be the pioneering force behind memory foam, and owners claim these mattresses offer above-average conforming, motion isolation, and noise reduction compared to other memory foam models.
  • Tempur-Pedic offers an extensive selection of mattresses in the Cloud and Contour series to accommodate a wide range of sleepers.
  • Tempur-Pedic owners claim that these mattresses have an above-average lifespan compared to both memory foam mattresses and all mattresses in general.
  • Free White Glove Service delivery — including in-home assembly — is offered to all customers in the contiguous U.S. with the exception of certain rural areas.

Cons:

  • Overall, the price-point for Tempur-Pedic mattresses is significantly higher than the price of comparable memory foam models.
  • With the exception of Breeze models, Tempur-Pedic mattresses tend to sleep much warmer than other mattresses.
  • Tempur-Pedic mattress purchasers have reported above-average off-gassing levels.
  • Tempur-Pedic mattresses (particularly those in the Cloud series) have little to no edge support, and may sink prematurely wherever people sit around the edges.
  • Mattress buyers will only be eligible to return their mattress for a refund after using it for 30 days, which may cause confusion among those who don’t read the fine print.

Product and Price Range: Tempur-Pedic mattresses are available in eight different sizes: Twin, Twin Long, Double, Queen, King, Split King, California King, and Split California King. Please note that select models may not be available in certain sizes. Tempur-Pedic mattresses range in price based on the selected model (see table in next section for more information).

Sleep Trial and Warranty Information

Trial Period and Guarantee: Tempur-Pedic offers a 90-night sleep trial. Purchasers are required to test out the mattress for at least 30 days before they are able to return it. Customers who return their mattress will receive a full refund on the original purchase minus shipping charges.

Warranty: Tempur-Pedic offers a 10-year limited warranty.

  1. The Tempur-Pedic warranty covers the repair costs of a defective mattress, and will issue a full product refund in the event of a mattress replacement. However, the owner is responsible for transportation charges for all repairs or replacements.
  2. Owners who choose to replace a defective mattress with an upgrade model must pay the difference between the original and the replacement.
  3. Warranty coverage is available to customers who purchase their mattress from an authorized Tempur-pedic retailer, but coverage does not extend to unauthorized third-party resellers on sites such as Amazon.com, eBay, or Craigslist.
  4. Warranty coverage is not available for floor or demo models.
  5. The warranty will be voided if a proper foundation is not used to support the mattress. According to Tempur-Pedic, proper support includes center support and five to six legs for Queen, King, and California sizes, or at least four legs for Twin, Twin Long, and Double sizes. Tempur-Pedic also recommended using a ‘slatted style bed frame’ for Queen, King, and California King sizes.
  6. The Tempur-Pedic mattress warranty covers the following product defects:
    • Deterioration to the mattress surface that causes indentations measuring 3/4″ or deeper, provided the indentation does not occur due to improper foundational support.
    • Physical defects in the Tempur-Pedic that cause the mattress to split or crack despite proper usage and support.
    • Manufacturing defects related to the zipper cover. Please note that, if the cover is replaced, Tempur-Pedic may option to provide a cover with a different color or design from the original.
  7. The warranty will not cover the following:
    • Indentations that are less than 3/4″ deep. These are considered normal wear and tear.
    • ‘Normal increase in softness’ in the mattress that does not affect its conforming or pressure-relieving abilities.
    • Repair or replacement requests that occur due to changes in the owner’s comfort preferences.
    • Burns, cuts, tears, stains, and other types of damage that do not occur during the manufacturing, shipping, or in-home assembly stages, and are a direct result of misuse by the owner.
    • Damage that occurs due to improper foundational support.
    • Repairs or replacements for floor or demo models sold at discounted prices.
  8. A new warranty will not be issued for replacement mattresses; rather, the coverage will continue until the original mattress warranty expires.
  9. The warranty is exclusively offered to the original purchaser. Anyone who acquires or buys the mattress from the owner does so ‘as is’, and will not receive warranty coverage.

Tempur-Pedic Mattress Sleep Ratings

CategoryCriteriaTempur-Pedic RatingWhat Tempur-Pedic Users Say
Customer SatisfactionBased on data collection, this is an overall customer sentiment regarding Tempur-Pedic mattresses.71% (Cloud)
74% (Contour)
Tempur-Pedic has earned an average to above-average customer satisfaction rating. Owners cite the wide mattress selection, strong customer service, and White Glove delivery among the company’s biggest strengths.
Durability Memory foam is engineered to provide a comfortable, conforming sleep surface that retains its original shape over time, but indentations are to be expected.ExcellentTempur-Pedic owners report that these mattresses have longer lifespans than other memory foam models, and indentations with Tempur-Pedic mattresses are less common.
Motion IsolationMemory foam mattresses have been touted for superior motion isolation, which means that motion does not occur throughout the mattress when someone gets up or shifts their position.Very GoodTempur-Pedic mattresses — particularly models in the Cloud series — isolate motion to a greater extent than comparable memory foam mattresses, according to customer reviews.
Sex Many memory foam users report that these mattresses are not very conducive for sex due to the lack of responsiveness, which can create a feeling of ‘fighting’ the mattress.FairOwner reports indicate that Tempur-Pedic mattresses are less suitable for sex than other memory foam models given the feeling of sinking into the mattress and “fighting” to change positions.
ConformingMemory foam mattresses are engineered to conform to the sleeper’s figure, creating a cradle-shaped impression that aligns the spine and targets pressure points.Very GoodTempur-Pedic owners claim the mattresses conform very closely, although conforming ability depends on the specific Tempur-Pedic model; generally, the Contour series conforms more closely and relieves more pressure than the Cloud series.
Temperature NeutralityMemory foam retains more body heat than other mattress materials, and users often ‘sleep hot’ as a result.FairWith the exception of Breeze models in the Cloud and Contour series, Tempur-Pedic mattresses tend to sleep relatively hot even by memory foam standards.
Off-gassingSome mattresses emit particles when they are unpackaged, accompanied by unpleasant ‘off-gassing’ smells that can last for days.PoorOff-gassing is a widely reported issue with Tempur-Pedic mattresses; most owners claim the odors dissipate within five days of unpackaging but some claim it can take weeks.
Edge SupportBecause of their construction, memory foam mattresses often feature little to no edge support.PoorTempur-Pedic mattresses offer little to no edge support, as is typical with memory foam mattresses.
NoiseMemory foam mattresses create little to no noise, due to their lack of springs, coils, and other metal componentsExcellentAll Tempur-Pedic mattresses in the Cloud and Contour series are virtually silent.
Ease of Moving and RotatingMemory foam mattresses tend to be lighter, which makes them easier to move. They never need to be flipped, since only one side is designed for sleeping.FairMost Tempur-Pedic mattresses weigh more than 100 lbs, which may cause difficulties rotating the mattress as recommended.
