Tempur-Pedic Mattress Overview

Tempur-Pedic has been in business since 1992. The company, which helped popularize memory foam as a luxury bedding material, was founded in Sweden but is currently headquartered in the U.S. Tempur-Pedic offers several individual mattress models. This review will focus on the brand’s four all-foam beds:

  • The TEMPUR-Adapt, or Adapt, measures 11 inches thick and has a medium feel, which corresponds to a 5 on our 1-10 firmness scale. The mattress has a memory foam comfort layer and a high-density polyfoam support core. The Adapt is currently Tempur-Pedic’s cheapest mattress.
  • The TEMPUR-ProAdapt, or ProAdapt, measures 12 inches thick. Customers can choose from three firmness options for their ProAdapt: soft (3), medium (5), or firm (7). In addition to a memory foam comfort layer and high-density support core, the soft and medium models have a second support layer of convoluted polyfoam.
  • The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt, or LuxeAdapt, is a 13-inch mattress available with a soft (3) or firm (7) feel. The soft model has a comfort layer of TEMPUR-ES memory foam, which is engineered to be highly adaptive for close body-conforming. The firm model has a standard memory foam layer. Both versions also include support layers of high-density and convoluted polyfoam.
  • The TEMPUR-breeze°, or Breeze°, features phase-change material in the memory foam layer designed to help the mattress maintain a cool, comfortable temperature. Two specific models are available. The PROBreeze° has a medium (5) feel and should sleep about 3 degrees cooler than the average mattress. The LUXEBreeze° is intended to sleep about 8 degrees cooler than average. This model is available with a soft (3) or firm (7) feel.

Read on to learn more about each Tempur-Pedic model. Our review includes construction details, prices, and performance ratings based on verified owner reviews and our own product testing. We’ll also compare Tempur-Pedic models to other leading mattresses sold today and provide an overview of the company’s shipping, return, and delivery policies.

Please note: This review focuses exclusively on current Tempur-Pedic mattress. We will not cover any obsolete models, including those that may still be sold on the Tempur-Pedic website and/or through third-party retailers like Amazon.com.

Additionally, the Adapt, ProAdapt, and PRObreeze° are also available as hybrid models with pocketed coil support cores. The hybrids share the same price-points and firmness levels as their all-foam counterparts. Hybrid mattresses offer more responsiveness than all-foam beds, and also tend to sleep cooler due to stronger airflow through their coil layers. Hybrids may feel more supportive for heavier sleepers, as well.

  • Sleepers who enjoy close body-conforming. The memory foam in Tempur-Pedic models contours very closely to the sleeper’s body. This results in a feeling of sleeping “in” – rather than “on” – the mattress.
  • Couples. All-foam mattresses from Tempur-Pedic excel at motion isolation and are virtually silent when bearing weight. Couples and co-sleepers should experience fewer nighttime disruptions.
  • Shoppers seeking a very durable memory foam mattress. Many memory foam mattresses deteriorate somewhat quickly, but Tempur-Pedic models are notable exceptions. The company has earned a reputation for long-lasting memory foam beds that often last seven and a half years or longer.
  • Those who need or want assistance setting up their mattress. Tempur-Pedic offers free White Glove delivery within the contiguous U.S. This service includes in-home assembly and old mattress removal.

Not Recommended for...

  • Hot sleepers. With the exception of the TEMPUR-breeze°, Tempur-Pedic mattresses tend to absorb and trap body heat, causing them to sleep somewhat warm.
  • People who are sensitive to smell. Even compared to other memory foam models, Tempur-Pedic mattresses produce a fair amount of initial off-gassing odor and some owners report bothersome long-term smells.
  • Shoppers on a budget. Tempur-Pedic mattresses cost much more than memory foam models from most competing brands. They will likely be too expensive for some buyers.

How Are Tempur-Pedic Mattresses Constructed?

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-ProAdapt Mattress Layers

Please note: Tempur-Pedic does not disclose certain mattress specs, such as individual layer thickness, foam density, or cover fabric composition.

Cover

he Adapt has a non-removable polyester cover. The material has an exceptionally soft feel. If spills occur, Tempur-Pedic recommends soaking up the liquid with a towel and air-drying the mattress.

The ProAdapt, LuxeAdapt, and Breeze° have dual-layer SmartClimate covers made of polyester. The covers have zippers and can be removed from the mattress for cleaning. Tempur-Pedic recommends washing in warm water and mild detergent, followed by air-drying.

The Breeze° cover is unique because it contains an additional layer of phase-change material, which absorbs body heat from the sleeper until the mattress surface reaches a certain temperature. The PRObreeze° is designed to sleep about 3 degrees cooler, while the LUXEbreeze° is designed to sleep 8 degrees cooler. According to Tempur-Pedic, the cooling process lasts for roughly 20 minutes after the sleeper gets into bed.

Comfort Layers

Our testing crew unzipped the ProAdapt to get a better look at the individual components. The testers found two memory foam comfort layers measuring a total of 4 inches thick. We are unsure about the foam density – Tempur-Pedic does not disclose this spec – but the company may use foams with densities up to 7 PCF, which is very high.

The Adapt, LUXEAdapt, and Breeze° models have comfort layers with similar compositions and density levels as the foam found in the ProAdapt.

Transitional Layer

Each Tempur-Pedic mattress has a polyfoam layer made of polyfoam located beneath its comfort layer(s). The ProAdapt has a 3-inch transitional layer. The other Tempur-Pedic models have transitional layers of 2 to 3 inches.

This transitional material prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply and coming into contact with the denser and firmer support core. Although Tempur-Pedic does not disclose the density of their transitional layers, we estimate the material is medium- to high-density in each bed.

Support Layers

The Adapt and the firm ProAdapt each have a solid support core of high-density polyfoam. Other Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattresses have high-density polyfoam support cores that are convoluted, giving the material a look similar to egg-crate foam.

The support core is designed to stabilize the entire mattress and keep sleepers on an even plane without sagging too much. In the ProAdapt, the convoluted polyfoam layer measures about 5 inches thick.

Mattress Height

The Adapt is Tempur-Pedic’s shortest current model, measuring 11 inches thick. This is considered a medium-profile mattress. The ProAdapt and PRObreeze° measure 12 inches thick, while the LuxeAdapt and LUXEbreeze° measure 13 inches thick. These are all considered high-profile mattresses.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses contain thick comfort layers. As a result, the beds sacrifice some base layer support to provide a more closely conforming feel. The mattresses provide a deep, pressure-relieving cradle for the body, but sleeper and edge support is somewhat minimal.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The feel of a Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress depends on the selected firmness level.

The ProAdapt, LuxeAdapt, and LUXEbreeze° are available with soft (3) surfaces. These models provide exceptional cradling for the sleeper’s body. The foam responds slowly and conforms very closely. Those who like to sink deeply into their mattress should consider this option.

Customers can select a medium (5) feel for the Adapt, ProAdapt, and PRObreeze°. This is the most balanced firmness option. The foams conform somewhat closely to the body, but sleepers won’t sink as much around the shoulders, back, and hips.

The ProAdapt, LuxeAdapt, and LUXEbreeze° are also available with a firm (7) feel. The mattresses still conform to the body but sleeper experiences very little sinking. This will likely be the most comfortable firmness for sleepers who like some contouring from their memory foam bed, but also a fair amount of support.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take an in-depth look at our Tempur-Pedic performance ratings.

The ratings breakdown below will focus on the ProAdapt. Our ratings are based on reviews from verified ProAdapt owners, as well as our own product testing, research, and analysis.

Durability

The ProAdapt was introduced in 2018. We have not had enough time to test this model against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability rating is based on the bed’s quality of materials and construction, owner experiences, and Tempur-Pedic’s reputation.

We expect the all-foam ProAdapt to perform for about seven to eight years before a replacement is needed. This expected lifespan is considerably long for a memory foam mattress, and can be attributed to the high-density foam used in its comfort layers.

This material tends to withstand deterioration and retain its shape longer than medium- or low-density memory foam. We expect the ProAdapt models with firm surfaces to have the longest lifespan, as softer surfaces may wear out more quickly.

Additionally, Tempur-Pedic has been in business for nearly 30 years. During this time, the company has earned a reputation for durable mattress construction and high-quality materials.

That said, some owners may notice body impressions developing in the mattress surface over time. To minimize these impressions, we suggest rotating the mattress head-to-foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt Mattress Motion Isolation

To evaluate the ProAdapt for motion isolation, we asked two of our sleep testers to lie side-by-side on the mattress. One tester moved around while the other felt for motion transferring across the surface. During this assessment, the ProAdapt demonstrated excellent motion isolation. The high-density comfort layers absorb movement very well and eliminate transfer completely.

Memory foam mattresses typically excel at motion isolation because they are less responsive than other mattress types. The ProAdapt performs exceptionally well in this category because foam density is often linked to motion-absorbing ability, and high-density foam usually eliminates more transfer than medium- or low-density foam.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noticed some strong off-gassing odor when unboxing the ProAdapt. These smells were still present when they re-evaluated the mattress a few days later. We expect most initial off-gassing odor will dissipate in about one week, but the mattress may continue to produce smells over time.

The ProAdapt’s high odor potential is also related to the density of its memory foam layers. High-density foams emit stronger smells than their less dense counterparts. The mattress may be somewhat bothersome to people who are sensitive to chemical smells.

Pressure Relief

tempur-pedic ProAdapt Mattress Pressure Relief

To evaluate the ProAdapt for pressure relief, our testers took turns lying on a sensory pad that tracks pressure build-up in the shoulders, hips, and other sensitive areas. The testers also switched positions to see if pressure increased or decreased when lying on their sides, back, or stomach.

Pressure relief is another key strength of the ProAdapt – and again, this is largely due to the bed’s dense comfort layers. High-density memory foam conforms to sleepers more closely than foams with lower densities, and this typically results in better spinal support and less pressure throughout the body.

Temperature Neutrality

Like other memory foam mattresses, the ProAdapt tends to absorb a fair amount of body heat from sleepers. The convoluted polyfoam support cores in the soft and medium models provide better airflow than support cores made of solid polyfoam (like that found in the firm ProAdapt). That said, the mattress sleeps a bit warm regardless of its selected firmness level.

All-foam mattresses generally sleep the warmest. Latex is a more breathable material than polyfoam or memory foam, which results in more temperature neutrality for sleepers. The coolest beds tend to be hybrids and innersprings due to their open-coil support cores, which generate steady air currents.

Edge Support

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-ProAdapt Mattress Edge Support

To evaluate the ProAdapt for edge support, our testers sat along the perimeter of the mattress as an owner might do when getting in and out of bed. All of our testers noticed significant sinkage. The testers also took turns lying near the edges of the mattress to check for feelings of “roll-off.” They felt a bit more stable during this test. This is due to the bed’s slow response and close conforming, which prevents most sleepers from feeling as though they will roll off the edge.

Most memory foam mattresses offer edge support that is fair at best. The high-density foam in their support layers is somewhat durable, but it cannot withstand long-term compression like latex or steel coils. As a result, people who own all-foam beds will usually notice more sinkage compared to those with latex, innerspring, or hybrid models.

Noise

The ProAdapt was virtually silent during all of our mattress tests, including those that involved sleepers moving around or getting in and out of bed. This is a common trait for all-foam mattresses. A noise-free design, coupled with excellent motion isolation abilities, make the ProAdapt very well-suited to couples.

Sex

The ProAdapt conforms very closely to sleepers, causing their bodies to sink into the mattress. For this reason, some couples may find the mattress problematic for sex. The deep contouring can inhibit movement and make changing positions somewhat difficult, and the bed’s weak edge support prevents couples from using the entire mattress surface. However, the mattress does offer very good traction for those who maintain one position during sex.

For many couples, the ProAdapt and other memory foam models are not responsive enough. Hybrids and innersprings offer the springiest surfaces thanks to their coil layers. Couples may also find latex beds more comfortable for sex due to the material’s natural responsiveness.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, the Tuck team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-ProAdapt Mattress Lightweight Sleeper

Our lightweight testers awarded favorable ratings to the ProAdapt – specifically, models with soft and medium feels. Side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds noted ample cushioning for their shoulders and hips, which helps align the spine and alleviate pressure points throughout the body. Back sleepers in this weight group experienced a good balance of body-conforming and support, and the mattress reduced pressure without sinking too much.

The lightweight testers did not feel as comfortable on the firm ProAdapt. This was true for all sleep positions. The comfort layer did not conform enough to cradle the body and alleviate pressure. Additionally, stomach sleepers in this group noticed a bit more sagging around the hips. The mattress still conformed evenly, but the slight loss of support made them feel less comfortable than our lightweight side and back sleepers.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-ProAdapt Mattress Average Weight Sleeper

Average weight side and back sleepers gave very positive ratings to the medium-feel ProAdapt. They noted close body-conforming, consistent pressure relief, and even support. Like their lighter counterparts, stomach sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds felt some sagging around their midsection, but they also agreed the medium feel was most comfortable.

Sleepers in the average weight group often need a mattress that will conform to the body without losing support. Excessively soft beds sink too deeply, resulting in added aches and pains, while firmer beds tend to conform very little and alleviate pressure to a minimal extent.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Tempur-Pedic Tempur-ProAdapt Mattress Heavyweight Sleeper

Our heavyweight testers all found the firm ProAdapt most comfortable. Side sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds didn’t sink too much (as they did on the soft and medium models), resulting in even alignment and good overall pressure relief. Back sleepers noted better support with this feel, as well.

Stomach sleepers in the heavyweight group noticed less sagging with the firm ProAdapt, but the support was still a bit uneven. Stomach sleepers often experience this issue. Many people carry a large amount of weight in their midsection, and sleeping face-down can cause the body to sink too much. Some heavier stomach sleepers prefer memory foam mattresses, but a large number find more supportive hybrids or innersprings more comfortable.

How Does the TempurPedic ProAdapt Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

We encourage all mattress shoppers to compare different brands and models before making a final decision. In this next section, we’ll see how the ProAdapt stacks up to other Tempur-Pedic models and some memory foam mattresses from competing brands.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt vs. TEMPUR-Adapt

The ProAdapt and Adapt were both released in 2018, and the mattresses share many similarities. Each model is available as an all-foam bed with a memory foam comfort layer and high-density base, or a hybrid with pocketed coils in the support layer. They also excel at motion isolation and pressure relief, but sleep hot for some and lack strong edge support.

The biggest difference between these models is firmness selection. The Adapt is only available with a medium feel. Although this firmness level may be ideal for some sleepers – average weight individuals in particular – people who prefer softer or firmer surfaces may not find the mattress comfortable. The ProAdapt is available with a soft, medium, or firm feel to accommodate a wider range of sleepers in terms of body type, sleep position, and comfort preferences.

Although the ProAdapt costs more, both mattresses are very expensive compared to other memory foam models. This is largely due to their high-quality construction and better-than-average durability, but shoppers on a budget may want to consider another brand altogether.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt vs. TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt

The LuxeAdapt offers many of the same benefits as the ProAdapt. Both mattresses provide close conforming, comfortable cradling for the spine, and excellent pressure relief throughout the body. These mattresses also isolate motion very well and do not produce any noise, making either one very well-suited for co-sleepers.

However, there are a couple of key differences. Customers can choose a soft or firm feel for their LuxeAdapt. This ensures most lighter and heavier people can find a comfortable model, but the selection is more limiting for people who prefer mid-level firmness. The ProAdapt offers all three firmness levels. Additionally, the LuxeAdapt is not available as a hybrid model.

The LuxeAdapt is one of Tempur-Pedic’s most expensive models, but despite a considerable price difference, this mattress and the ProAdapt are both quite pricey. Customers should note that the company offers free White Glove delivery, which can offset setup and old mattress disposal costs.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt vs. TEMPUR-breeze°

The Breeze° is designed to sleep exceptionally cool. Phase-change material in the cover is intended to keep the surface at a comfortable temperature. The PRObreeze° is meant to sleep 3 degrees cooler than the average memory foam mattress, while the LUXEbreeze° is meant to sleep 8 degrees cooler than average.

This specialized construction can be very beneficial to hot sleepers. Many other memory foam models – including the ProAdapt – sleep warmer because the comfort layer traps body heat from sleepers. Aside from this key feature, the Breeze° models and ProAdapt are fairly comparable. All three mattresses provide excellent motion isolation and pressure relief, but owners will notice some sinkage along the edges.

The PRObreeze° costs less than the ProAdapt while the LUXEbreeze° costs more, but all three models are considered much more expensive than average.

TEMPUR-ProAdapt vs. The Casper

The Casper Mattress is a mixed-foam model constructed with comfort layers of polyfoam and memory foam over a high-density base. The memory foam offers noticeable conforming but the top polyfoam layer is somewhat responsive, giving the surface a light bounce. By comparison, the ProAdapt is much less responsive and provides a deeper cradle for the sleeper’s body.

The Casper Mattress has a medium feel, which is very comparable to the ProAdapt with the same firmness level. Additionally, the Casper Mattress is also available as a hybrid with pocketed coils in the support core. One major difference is pressure relief. The Casper Mattress does not conform as closely due to its polyfoam surface layer, whereas the ProAdapt cradles the sleeper to reduce pressure throughout their body.

Price will likely be a factor for some shoppers, as the ProAdapt costs much more than the Casper Mattress. The ProAdapt has a longer expected lifespan, but both mattresses have earned similar ratings in most of our other performance categories. TEMPUR-ProAdapt vs. Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf by Saatva is a luxury mattress featuring two memory foam comfort layers over a high-density polyfoam base. The mattress is available with medium and firm feels, which should be satisfactory for most average weight and heavyweight sleepers. However, lighter people – particularly side sleepers – may find the soft ProAdapt more comfortable.

The ProAdapt and Loom & Leaf each perform very well in the pressure relief and motion isolation categories. This can be attributed to the dense, high-quality foams found in each model. The Loom & Leaf tends to sleep a bit warmer, but both mattresses are known to trap body heat from sleepers. Edge support is also somewhat weak for both beds.

The Loom & Leaf has an above-average price-point for a memory foam mattress, but is still much cheaper than the ProAdapt. Both Tempur-Pedic and Saatva offer free White Glove delivery within the contiguous U.S., as well.
