Casper vs. Tempur-Pedic Mattress Overview

Casper vs. Tempur-Pedic Mattress Overview

Casper was established in 2014. The brand’s flagship mattress, the Casper, features three foam comfort layers and a support core made of high-density polyfoam. Its firmness is considered ‘Medium,’ or a 5.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. Casper has since introduced two additional models. The Casper Essential is a memory foam mattress that is considered ‘Firm’ (7.5); and the Casper Wave is a memory foam and latex mattress that is considered ‘Medium Soft’ (4.5).

Tempur-Pedic is a leading manufacturer of memory foam beds for more than 25 years. The brand’s current lineup includes five individual models. The TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, and TEMPUR-LuxeAdaptare all-foam beds consisting of a memory foam comfort layer and high-density polyfoam support core. Tempur-Pedic also offers the TEMPUR-PRObreeze° and TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze°. These beds have dual-layer SmartClimate covers infused with phase-change material, which results in exceptional cooling.

Please note: Casper and Tempur-Pedic both offer other mattresses in addition to those listed above.

  • Casper offers the Casper Hybrid and Casper Wave Hybrid. These beds share many similarities with their all-foam namesake counterparts, such as firmness settings and comfort layer materials, but their support cores contain pocketed cols reinforced with high-density foam.
  • The TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, and TEMPUR-PRObreeze° are also available as hybrids featuring support cores with pocketed coils encased in foam.

This guide exclusively looks at the all-foam mattresses from Casper and Tempur-Pedic. For more information about hybrid options from these brands, please visit our Casper and Tempur-Pedic Mattress Reviews pages.

Casper and Tempur-Pedic both offer mattresses with memory foam comfort layers in a wide range of thickness, firmness, and composition settings. However, the brands differ from one another in several key ways, such as pricing. This guide will compare Casper and Tempur-Pedic mattresses based on a wide range of criteria, including cost, construction, and performance, as well as each brand’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Sleep Position Ratings

Casper

Each Casper mattress is best suited for different types of sleepers. The flagship Casper model offers a ‘Medium’ feel and an average profile, making it ideal for sleepers in the average weight group (130 to 230 pounds), as well as side sleepers.

The Casper Essential has a ‘Firm’ feel and low profile that best serves heavier individuals who don’t mind shorter beds (including back and stomach sleepers). And the Casper Wave features a ‘Medium Soft’ surface that provides close conforming for lighter individuals. All three Casper mattresses provide great motion isolation and do not make any noise when bearing weight.

Tempur-Pedic

Tempur-Pedic’s current mattress selection includes five individual beds. Three of these models are available in multiple firmness settings. The TEMPUR-ProAdapt is available in ‘Soft,’ ‘Medium,’ and ‘Firm’ settings, meaning most sleepers should be able to find a suitable setting regardless of their sleep position or weight.

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt and TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze° are each available in ‘Soft’ and ‘Firm’ settings. The ‘Firm’ option offers consistent support for heavier back and stomach sleepers, while the ‘Soft’ option should provide sufficient conforming and spinal alignment for lighter people, particularly side sleepers.

Two other Tempur-Pedic models, the TEMPUR-Adapt and TEMPUR-PRObreeze°, are available in ‘Medium’ settings only. This will likely be the most comfortable setting for sleepers of any position in the average weight group (130 to 230 pounds).

Our Recommendations

Choose Casper if...

  • You experience frequent neck, shoulder, and/or back pain
  • You prefer low- to medium-profile mattresses
  • You and/or your sleep partner awaken easily due to movement or noise

Choose Tempur-Pedic if...

  • You experience aches and pains in your neck, shoulders, lower back, or hips
  • You prefer to sleep on mattresses with thicker-than-average profiles
  • You and/or your sleep partner awaken easily due to movement

How are Casper Mattresses Built?

Each Casper mattress has a unique design. The Original Casper is constructed with polyfoam and memory foam layers, along with a high-density polyfoam support core. It has a 12-inch profile, which is about average thickness for a mattress.

The Casper Wave is constructed with four comfort layers: a top layer of polyfoam, a second layer of blended latex, a third layer of memory foam, and a fourth layer of gel-infused high-resiliency polyfoam (which acts as a transitional layer). The Wave’s support core is high-density polyfoam and the cover is a cotton blend. Its 11 1/2″ profile makes the Wave thicker than average.

Lastly, the Casper Essential has an 8 1/2″ profile, making it Casper’s shortest bed. The mattress has a top comfort layer of memory foam, followed by a polyfoam transitional layer and a high-density polyfoam support core. The cover is a knit fabric blend.

How are Tempur-Pedic Mattresses Built?

Tempur-Pedic mattresses share the same general construction, but differ in terms of thickness, firmness, and cover composition. The TEMPUR-Adapt has a memory foam comfort layer and a high-density polyfoam support core. In addition to these components, the other four all-foam Tempur-Pedic mattresses have an additional base layer of convoluted polyfoam, which provides added reinforcement.

The TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt each have dual-layer SmartClimate covers, which help keep the bed at a cooler temperature. The other two models, the TEMPUR-PRObreeze° and TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze°, have phase-change material infused into their SmartClimate covers. This allows the beds to sleep much cooler. By design, the TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze° should sleep five degrees cooler than the TEMPUR-PRObreeze°.
