Sleep Position Ratings
Purple
As the data shows, the Purple Mattress with its ‘Medium Firm’ feel has earned the highest ratings from sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds and fall in the average to above-average weight groups; some lighter individuals – particularly side sleepers – have found the bed excessively firm.
For the Purple hybrid models, experiences vary by sleeper weight and selected thickness/firmness. We tested the Purple Hybrid mattress (‘Medium’); those in the average weight group (130 to 230 pounds) reported the highest satisfaction ratings, while lighter and heavier individuals thought the mattress offered a good compromise of body conforming and sleeper support.
Tempur-Pedic
Tempur-Pedic’s wide selection ensures most sleepers can find a suitable option regardless of their chosen weight or sleep position. For all-foam beds, those who prefer ‘Medium’ settings can choose from the 11-inch TEMPUR-Adapt, 12-inch TEMPUR-ProAdapt, or the 12-inch TEMPUR-PRObreeze°. These models offer a good balance of conforming and support that makes them suitable for people who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds.
Other all-foam options include the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt and TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze°, both of which are 13 inches thick. These beds are available in a ‘Soft’ setting for lighter people and side sleepers, and a ‘Firm’ for heavier back and stomach sleepers.
The hybrid selection is a bit more limited, but sleepers can still choose from several models. The TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, and TEMPUR-PRObreeze° hybrids each have a ‘Medium’ feel. They have more responsive surfaces that are ideal for back and stomach sleeping.

How Are Purple Mattresses Built?
All Purple mattresses are constructed with the signature ‘Smart Grid,’ a top comfort layer that consists of buckling-column gel dispersed evenly over an elastic polymer grid. The material conforms closely and alleviates aches and pains much like other mattress materials, such as foam or latex, but it withstands wear better and will not deteriorate as quickly. All Purple mattresses also have transitional foam layers for added sleeper support.
The Purple Mattress has a high-density polyfoam base layer, which reinforces the bed and helps prevent sagging in the sleep surface. The Purple hybrid models contain pocketed coils in the support core. In addition to providing edge support, the coil layer offers strong air circulation that allows the mattress to sleep exceptionally cool, even by hybrid standards.
The Purple Mattress and Purple Hybrid mattresses share the same firmness setting, ‘Medium Firm’ (or a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale). The Purple Hybrid Premier comes in either a ‘Medium’ (5.5) or ‘Medium Soft’ (4.5). All Purple mattresses are relatively heavy, making them difficult to lift and rotate for most owners.
How Are Tempur-Pedic Mattresses Built?
Tempur-Pedic was one of the first mattress manufacturers to popularize memory foam as a comfort layer component. Not surprisingly, each of the brand’s current models has at least one memory foam layer in the comfort system.
All five mattresses are available in all-foam designs. The TEMPUR-Adapt has a support core made from high-density polyfoam, while the other four also include this layer along with a convoluted polyfoam base for added support. The TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, and TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt have dual-layer SmartClimate covers. The TEMPUR-PRObreeze° and TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze° have the same cover with an added infusion of phase-change material for added cooling.
Three models – the TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, and TEMPUR-PRObreeze° – are also available as hybrids. These models are virtually identical to their all-foam counterparts with the exception of their support cores, which swap out the polyfoam layers for pocketed coils encased in high-density foam.
