Leesa Hybrid Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The Leesa Hybrid’s medium-firm feel can accommodate sleepers of all weight groups and sleep position preferences.
  • Strong edge support may extend the usable surface of the bed.
  • The hole-punched top comfort layer and the pocketed coil support layer allow airflow, which can promote a cooler night’s sleep.

Leesa Hybrid Mattress Overview

Leesa Hybrid Mattress Overview

Leesa launched in 2014 as a direct-to-consumer mattress company. In addition to sleep products that include bases, pillows, sheets, and more, Leesa currently produces three mattresses: the Leesa Original, the Leesa Hybrid, and the Leesa Legend.

Formerly called the Sapira, the Leesa Hybrid Mattress has a medium-firm feel, rating around 6.5 on the 10-point firmness scale. The Leesa Hybrid is constructed of five layers. The comfort layers include a top comfort layer of 1.5 inches of hole-punched polyfoam on top of a 1.5-inch layer of memory foam. Beneath, a 1-inch transitional layer of polyfoam sits above a 6-inch pocketed coil support core and a 1-inch base of support foam.

In this review, we’ll give you a detailed overview of the Leesa Hybrid’s construction, pricing, and performance. We’ll also compare it to similar mattresses and explain Leesa’s policies on shipping, returns, and warranties.

  • People who tend to sleep warm. The Leesa Hybrid’s top layer of polyfoam is hole-punched to allow heat to dissipate, while the pocket coil layer allows additional airflow.
  • Partners of different sizes. Our testers rated the Leesa Hybrid well across weight groups and sleep positions.
  • Couples seeking a balance of bounce and motion isolation. The coil layer lends to a responsive surface that prevents sleepers from sinking in too deeply. The 3 inches of foam in the comfort layers absorb motion, so you’re less likely to feel your partner move during the night. The sturdy edge can help expand the overall usable surface of the bed.

Not Recommended for...

  • People who prefer a softer mattress. Across weight groups, our sleep testers found the Leesa Hybrid comfortable. However, sleepers who strongly prefer a softer mattress may find the Leesa Hybrid too firm.
  • Sleepers looking for exceptional pressure relief. Our testers found the Leesa Hybrid Mattress provided sufficient pressure relief to reduce their aches and pains. However, it didn’t offer as much pressure relief as some hybrid mattresses we’ve tried.
  • Sleepers who are easily disturbed by noise. The Leesa Hybrid performed well in our noise tests, but it is not as silent as most all-foam mattresses. Sleepers who are disturbed by an occasional subtle creak may not find the Leesa Hybrid ideal.

Leesa Hybrid Mattress Awards

Due to positive ratings from our testing team and owners in general, the Leesa Hybrid Mattress has earned the following awards in our Mattress Guides:

How Is the Leesa Hybrid Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Leesa Hybrid uses a poly-blend cover designed for breathability. This single piece of fabric wraps over the mattress to make the cover nearly seamless. The cover is quilted and features Leesa’s four signature stripes.

Comfort Layers

The Leesa Hybrid features two comfort layers. The first layer is a 1.5-inch layer of polyfoam with a density of 3 PCF and a firmness of 13 ILD. This high-density polyfoam offers more durability and conforming than lower density polyfoam comfort layers.

However, the firmness is relatively low, giving the comfort layer some softness. The top layer of the Leesa Hybrid combats the heat retention often associated with foam mattresses by featuring holes to allow heat to dissipate.

The second comfort layer is 1.5 inches of 4 PCF memory foam that rates 12 ILD. This memory foam is medium-density, striking a balance between the benefits of higher density and lower density memory foam. It retains heat less than most high-density memory foam while conforming more than most low-density memory foam to cradle to the body to provide pressure relief.

Transitional Layer

The Leesa Hybrid’s transition layer is constructed of 1 inch of 2 PCF support foam with 30 ILD. This firmer foam layer is designed to prevent sleepers from sinking in against the pocketed coils.

Support Layers

The Leesa Hybrid has a 6-inch support core with over 1,000 14.5 gauge pocketed coils. These coils are pocketed and can move independently, which can help prevent motion transfer and provide better support. The layer of pocketed coils rests on a 1.8 PCF polyfoam base with 32 ILD. This 1-inch thick layer of polyfoam reinforces the coils and adds to the mattress’s durability.

Mattress Height

The Leesa Hybrid mattress is 11 inches thick, which falls into the average range. This should be thick enough to accommodate most heavier sleepers.

Product Name Firmness Setting Thickness Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

At around 6.5 on the 10-point firmness scale, the Leesa Hybrid is medium-firm. This firmness setting has some conforming without much sink, making it a popular option across weight groups and sleep positions.

The Leesa Hybrid has high point elasticity, meaning that most of the compression occurs where weight is applied rather than spreading across the surface of the bed. While the Leesa Hybrid is medium-firm, this construction may make it feel somewhat softer than latex or innerspring mattresses of similar firmness.

Our sleep testers experienced a gentle hug from the comfort layers, giving the sensation of sleeping “in” rather than “on” the mattress. However, the medium-firm feel and responsive foams prevented them from feeling trapped in the bed.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

The Leesa Hybrid hasn’t been on the market long enough to collect long-term data on its durability. However, based on the quality of the construction, we would expect the Leesa Hybrid to have a similar or slightly longer lifespan than other fixed-foam hybrid models on the market, which usually average around 7 years.

Durability

The Leesa Hybrid hasn’t been on the market long enough to collect long-term data on its durability. However, based on the quality of the construction, we would expect the Leesa Hybrid to have a similar or slightly longer lifespan than other fixed-foam hybrid models on the market, which usually average around 7 years.

The pocketed coil system and quality foams lend well to the overall durability of this mattress. The coil system consists of over 1,000 individually wrapped coils. This coil design tends to be more durable than traditional hourglass-shaped springs since each coil has a consistent width over its whole length.

Additionally, the high-density polyfoams usually have greater longevity than lower-density foams and they tend not to break down as quickly.

Motion Isolation

Our testers who sleep with partners reported the Leesa Hybrid reduced the amount of motion they felt across the surface of the bed but did not completely eliminate it. While they could still feel when their partner got into or out of bed, our testers didn’t find the motion transfer significantly disrupted their sleep.

Because of foam’s high point elasticity, it traditionally allows compression and absorbs movement. The two foam comfort layers in the Leesa Hybrid total 3 inches thick, which is enough to minimize the motion across the surface. The coil system is the root cause of the bulk of the motion transfer our testers felt on the Leesa Hybrid Mattress.

Since the Leesa Hybrid’s coils are individually encased, movement isn’t transferred between the springs. However, the bounce of the springs may still lead to some movement.

Off-Gassing

We noticed the Leesa Hybrid had a slight initial odor when the Leesa Hybrid was first unboxed. However, this odor was not overpowering and had dissipated significantly by the next day. After 72 hours, there were no notable lingering smells.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) usually cause the odor associated with the off-gassing process. VOCs are gases commonly emitted from synthetic foams. While VOCs are usually considered fairly harmless, the smell may be displeasing for some sleepers. Our testers found the off-gassing odor inoffensive, so it may not require as much airing out as some mattresses.

Pressure Relief

For our internal test of the Leesa Hybrid’s conforming, we ask sleep testers of different weight groups to lie on a sensory pad that measures pressure buildup. The degree of conforming and pressure relief varied between weight groups, but our testers generally rated the Leesa Hybrid well.

The two foam comfort layers total 3 inches thick and sit on top of a 1-inch layer of transitional foam, giving a substantial amount of material to absorb weight. These layers use relatively soft foams (13 ILD and 12 ILD respectively), which allowed all of our sleepers to experience some cradling.

Our lightweight sleepers (under 130 pounds), however, did not experience as much hug as our average weight (130-230 pounds) and heavier sleepers (230 pounds and above) due to the mattress’ medium-firm feel.

Temperature Neutrality

Our sleep testers found the Leesa Hybrid slept cooler than many mattresses. None reported any issues with excessive heat or sweating during the night.

Mattresses with memory foam and/or polyfoam comfort layers frequently trap heat due to their close conforming and lack of airflow. To address this issue, the Leesa Hybrid’s polyfoam comfort layer features small holes to allow air to pass through, cooling the sleep surface.

The coil support system allows additional circulation through the mattress’s base to further promote a cooler night’s sleep. The Leesa Hybrid Mattress may be a good choice for sleepers who like the hug of foam but not the associated heat retention.

Edge Support

Our testers were impressed with the Leesa Hybrid’s strong edge support. To test it, we had sleepers from different weight groups sit close to the perimeter of the bed. All of our testers felt well-supported and did not struggle to stand up from the position.

Our overnight testers slept close to the edge to test how much it compressed under their weight and found they were able to use the full surface area without feeling like they might roll off the edge.

This sturdy edge may make the Leesa Hybrid a strong option for those who frequently sit near the perimeter of the bed. Additionally, the extra edge support may make it easier to use the full surface of the bed, which might appeal to couples.

Noise

Our sleep testers found the Leesa Hybrid Mattress was very quiet. The coils produced very little noise, and the multiple layers of foam muffled these sounds significantly enough that our testers did not find them disruptive. As they age, it is possible that the coils in the Leea Hybrid could start to creak more. Since pocketed coils usually wear well, however, we wouldn’t expect the noise to be significant.

Sex

The Leesa Hybrid Mattress earned very good ratings in this category. While the foam comfort layers contour to the body, they are responsive enough to regain their shape relatively quickly, making it easier to move across the surface of the bed.

The support layer of pocketed coils gives the bed extra bounce, which is often beneficial for sex. Additionally, a sturdy perimeter makes more of the surface of the bed usable.

Sleeper Ratings

A person’s weight, shape, and preferred sleeping position can be significant factors in how a mattress feels to them. To get a clearer idea of how different individuals experience the Leesa Hybrid Mattress, we had sleep testers in three weight groups try out different sleep positions.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Our sleepers who weigh under 130 pounds felt the Leesa Hybrid performed quite well. While they noted that it is somewhat firm, they experienced enough support and conforming to promote proper spinal alignment and relieve pressure points.

Lightweight sleepers usually prefer slightly soft or medium-soft mattresses because they provide more cradling. The Leesa Hybrid mattress has a medium-firm feel, but it may still be a good choice for lightweight sleepers who prefer a firmer feel.

Our lightweight testers felt the Leesa Hybrid was best for back and stomach sleeping. The firmer feel can provide a stable, even surface that prevents heavier body parts (like the hips) from sinking in too deeply.

Our lightweight side sleepers also rated the Leesa Hybrid well, though they experienced more pressure points. The two comfort layers provided a touch of softness, but due to the firmness of the mattress, it only provided moderate cradling and pressure relief.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

The Leesa Hybrid provided our average weight sleepers with a comfortable hug and good support, leading our sleep testers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds to give it high marks across all sleep positions.

Average weight sleepers usually prefer a medium or medium-firm mattress, so the Leesa Hybrid’s firmness setting falls right around this range.

When sleeping on their sides, our average weight sleepers experienced very good cradling and pressure relief from the two comfort layers without feeling “trapped in the bed.” Our stomach sleepers also rated the Leesa Hybrid very well for its ability to provide a stable surface without allowing their midsections to sink in too deeply.

Our average weight back sleepers gave the Leesa Hybrid excellent ratings due to the exceptional support provided by the pocketed coil system.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds often prefer a medium-firm or firm mattress. This setting tends to provide the necessary balance between support and conforming. The Leesa Hybrid’s medium-firm feel earned it good marks with our heavyweight sleep testers.

When sleeping on their sides or backs, our heavyweight sleepers felt the Leesa Hybrid performed very well. It offered enough conforming to relieve the pressure points of side sleepers while providing enough support to keep our back sleepers’ spines well aligned.

Our heavyweight stomach sleepers felt the Leesa Hybrid performed well, but they were less enthusiastic because the mattress allowed more sink than ideal around our stomach sleeper’s midsections.

How Does the Leesa Hybrid Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

Comparing models is a crucial aspect of mattress shopping. Below, you’ll find how the Leesa Hybrid Mattress stacks up against three competing models with similar designs.

Leesa Hybrid vs. Leesa Original

While the Leesa Hybrid pairs foam and coils, the Leesa Original Mattress is constructed entirely of foam. Both mattresses provide good motion isolation, pressure relief, and durability, but their unique constructions give them distinct advantages.

The Leesa Original Mattress uses two comfort layers: 2 inches of 3 PCF polyfoam and 2 inches of 3 PCF memory foam. These comfort layers total one inch thicker than the Leesa Hybrid’s comfort layers, which can provide greater conforming, so the Leesa Original may be a good choice for sleepers with sharp pressure points.

The Leesa Hybrid’s pocketed coil layer provides extra edge support and bounce, so it may be a better choice for sleepers wanting to make full use of the surface of the bed and those who appreciate extra springiness. Additionally, the hybrid construction helps the Leesa Hybrid sleep cooler, which may make it a better choice for those who tend to sleep hot.

The Leesa Original is softer than the Leesa Hybrid, rating around 5 on the firmness scale. This medium setting may be a good choice for side sleepers under 130 pounds who want extra pressure relief and sleepers who like more hug from their mattress.

Leesa Hybrid vs. Leesa Legend

Like the Leesa Hybrid, the Leesa Legend Mattress uses a hybrid design. Both models rate around 6.5 on the 10-point firmness scale, giving them a medium-firm feel. The two mattresses share some notable similarities, but the Leesa Legend is considered Leesa’s most advanced model.

While the Leesa Hybrid features two 1.5-inch thick foam comfort layers, the Leesa Legend uses two 1-inch thick foam comfort layers and a 1.5-inch thick layer of pocketed microcoils. This layer is zoned, with microcoils under the shoulders and legs to provide softness and conforming and foam under the hips for greater support. This construction may make it may be a good option for side sleepers with sharp pressure points.

Our average weight (130-230 pounds) and heavyweight (230 pounds and over) sleepers gave the Leesa Hybrid and the Leesa Legend similar ratings for all sleep positions. However, our lightweight sleeper testers had mixed preferences, with stomach sleepers preferring the Leesa Hybrid, back sleepers giving both models the same rating, and side sleepers preferring the Legend.

Leesa Hybrid vs. Casper Hybrid

Both the Leesa Hybrid and the Casper Hybrid are designed as hybrid alternatives to each respective brand’s flagship all-foam mattress. Like the Leesa Hybrid, the Casper Hybrid uses two comfort layers that are 3 inches thick.

The Casper Hybrid is softer than the Leesa Hybrid, coming in around 5.5 (medium) on the firmness scale. This softer feel can provide greater conforming, which may make the Casper Hybrid’s an ideal choice for sleepers under 230 who suffer from discomfort associated with pressure points.

Since the Casper offers zoned support with extra firmness under the hips, it may be a good mattress for sleepers looking for more targeted support and softness. Our lightweight sleepers preferred the Casper Hybrid to the Leesa Hybrid, so it may also be particularly appealing to sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds.

The Leesa Hybrid’s firmer feel was favored by our sleep testers who weigh over 230 pounds, preventing them from sinking in too deeply. As well, the sturdier edge of the Leesa Hybrid may allow couples to use more of the surface of the bed, while the mattress’s extra bounce may be conducive to sex.

Read our complete Casper Hybrid Mattress Review.

Leesa Hybrid vs. Saatva

The Saatva Mattress is an innerspring model available in three firmness settings, which may make it a good option for sleepers whose firmness preferences fall outside midrange.

The Saatva is available in Plush Soft (4), Luxury Firm (6), and Firm (7.5). The Plush Soft setting can provide extra cushioning and hug, so sleepers under 130 pounds may prefer it to the medium-firm Leesa Hybrid. Saatva’s Firm mattress may appeal to sleepers over 230 pounds looking for extra support.

The Saatva Mattress is available in two thickness options: 11.5 inches and 14.5 inches. The 11.5-inch model may appeal to sleepers under 130 pounds who prefer a lower sleep surface. The 14.5-inch model may provide extra support for sleepers over 230 pounds, and the added height could make it easier to get into and/or out of bed.

The Saatva Mattress uses less material in its comfort layers, so sleepers may notice the coil layer more when they sleep. Shoppers seeking a balance of thicker comfort layers and a coil system may prefer the Leesa Hybrid. While its coil layer provides bounce and edge support, its thicker foam comfort layers help isolate motion.

Leesa Hybrid vs. Brooklyn Bedding Aurora

Like the Leesa Hybrid, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora uses a hybrid design that pairs multiple layers of foam with a layer of pocketed coils.

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora takes cooling technology to the next level with two proprietary materials. The 1.5-inch top layer of CopperFlex foam is engineered to contour to the body while wicking away heat. The CopperFlex foam is paired with a TitanCool infusion for additional cooling. Since our sleep testers found the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora slept exceptionally cool, people who tend to sleep hot may appreciate this technology.

The Brooklyn Bedding Aurora offers three firmness settings: soft (3.5), medium (5.5), and firm (7.5). Both the Leesa Hybrid and the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora received good marks from our sleep testers across weight groups and sleep positions.

However, the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora’s firmness options gave it a slight edge. This was particularly pronounced for our side sleepers under 130 pounds, who experienced more cradling and pressure relief from the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora’s soft setting.

Read our complete Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Mattress Review.

Leesa Hybrid vs. Tuft & Needle Hybrid

The Leesa Hybrid and the T&N Hybrid are both hybrid models that excel in many of the same areas, including temperature neutrality, edge support, and sex. However, key differences in construction and firmness affect the overall sleep experience these mattresses provide.

Coming in around 5.5 (medium) on the firmness scale, the T&N Hybrid is slightly softer than the Leesa Hybrid, so it may appeal to sleepers who like extra hug. While lightweight sleepers generally like softer mattresses, our testers preferred the Leesa Hybrid.

Though construction varies between these two mattresses, our internal and overnight sleep testing found they both provided a cool night’s sleep.

In addition to a 1-inch pillow-top cover and a 2-inch layer of graphite- and gel-infused polyfoam, the T&N Hybrid’s comfort layer includes a 1-inch layer of microcoils. This layer provides added cradling and support, so sleepers looking for extra pressure relief may want to consider the T&N Hybrid. However, this layer also adds bounce, which may give the Leesa Hybrid an edge for sleepers who prioritize motion isolation.
