Level Sleep Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The Level Sleep Mattress features a zoned comfort layer that supports the midsection while cradling the head, neck, and feet.
  • Excellent motion isolation makes the mattress ideal for couples.
  • A conforming yet responsive surface creates a combined feeling of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.

Level Sleep Mattress Overview

Level Sleep Mattress Overview

Level Sleep is a U.S.-based mattress and sleep accessory brand that first launched in 2015. The company’s patented products are designed to provide spinal alignment, alleviate pressure, and improve overall sleep quality. This review will focus on the flagship Level Sleep Mattress, also known as the TriSupport Mattress.

The Level Sleep Mattress features a comfort layer of high-resilience polyfoam, followed by a second polyfoam layer divided into zones. Each zone has a different corresponding firmness. The head and foot of the bed are soft, or 3 on the 1-10 firmness scale. This plush feel ensures comfortable cradling for the head, neck, and feet. The area beneath the sleeper’s back is firm (7) for enhanced spinal support, followed by medium (5.5) foam under the waist to reduce pressure in the hips. The support core is made of high-density polyfoam. Altogether, the mattress measures 11 inches thick.

Read on to learn more about the Level Sleep Mattress in terms of construction, pricing, and performance. We’ll also compare the mattress to a few competing memory foam models, and provide an overview of Level Sleep’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

  • People with back pain. The Level Sleep Mattress has a zoned comfort layer that offers enhanced support to different areas of the body. This results in even spinal alignment and less pressure for most sleepers.
  • Sleepers who prefer a balance of body-contouring and support. The bed’s top two layers conform evenly to the body but the mattress is also fairly responsive, creating a combined feeling of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.
  • Couples. The Level Sleep Mattress isolates motion very well and does not produce any noise when bearing weight, making it a good choice for people who awaken easily due to their co-sleeper’s movements.

Not Recommended for...

  • Sleepers who prefer a traditional memory foam feel. The Level Sleep Mattress conforms to a noticeable extent, but it does not provide the same pressure-relieving body cradle as models with memory foam layers.

Video Review

Our testing team evaluated the Level Sleep Mattress for motion isolation, pressure relief, and other performance factors. To see their findings, check out the video below.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Level Sleep Mattress. This review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

As you can see, the Level Sleep Mattress earned favorable ratings in most performance categories. For a detailed look at each rating, check out our full breakdown below.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Level Sleep Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

How Is the Level Sleep Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Level Sleep Mattress has a cover made from 4-way stretch polyester. The cover can be removed if staining occurs, but it should not be washed in a machine. Level Sleep recommends spot-cleaning with mild detergent instead.

Comfort Layers

The mattress has a top 1-inch comfort layer made of high-resilience polyfoam. This material has a plush feel and provides ample cushioning for the sleeper’s body.

The second 3-inch comfort layer is also made of polyfoam. This layer is zoned to provide different levels of conforming and support to the sleeper’s body. The top and bottom zones have a soft feel to cradle the head, neck, legs, and hips. The firmest zone is located beneath the sleeper’s back, ensuring excellent support for the shoulders and spine, while the foam under the sleeper’s waist has a medium feel to alleviate pressure around the hips.

The zoned polyfoam also acts as a transitional layer that prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress and coming into contact with the dense support core.

Support Layers

The Level Sleep Mattress has a 7-inch support core consisting of high-resilience polyfoam, which is much firmer than the HR foam found in the bed’s comfort layers. This base layer stabilizes the entire bed. Along with the zoned middle layer, the support core is designed to minimize sagging across the surface and maintain an even plane for sleepers.

Mattress Height

The Level Sleep Mattress measures 11 inches thick, making it a medium-profile model. The mattress sacrifices some base layer support in order to ensure ample space for comfort and transitional components. As a result, the bed offers excellent motion isolation and pressure relief, but may not provide enough support for some sleepers – heavier individuals in particular.

Product Name Firmness Level Thickness Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components
Level Sleep Mattress Head/Foot: Soft (3)
Back: Firm (7)
Hips: Medium (5.5)
11″ 7″ HD Polyfoam 1″ Plush HR Polyfoam
3″ Zoned Polyfoam

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Level Sleep Mattress has a unique feel due to its zoned middle layer. The foam has a very soft feel at the head and feet for comfortable cradling, while the middle two zones are noticeably firmer for enhanced support to the spine and hips. This design ensures an even plane and minimal sagging for most sleepers weighing 230 pounds or less.

Polyfoam tends to be more responsive than memory foam, and this gives the mattress a light bounce. Most sleepers experience a combined feeling of sleeping “in” and sleeping “on” the bed, as opposed to memory foam mattresses that conform much more closely and cause the body so sink into the surface.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Level Sleep Mattress. Our ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, along with experiences from verified Level Sleep owners.

Durability

The Level Sleep Mattress has been available to the public for less than five years. As a result, we have not had enough time to test this model against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability rating is based on quality of materials and construction, owner experiences, and Level Sleep’s overall reputation.

We estimate the Level Sleep Mattress will perform for about six years before a replacement mattress is needed. This expected lifespan is slightly below-average for an all-foam mattress. Over time, the softer head and foot zones of the middle layer are likely to deteriorate before the firmer middle zones. This may cause impressions to form in the surface above the shoulders and below the waist, which can affect how supportive the mattress feels.

Many mattresses can be rotated head-to-foot to minimize body impressions over time. However, Level Sleep Mattress should not be rotated in this fashion due to the bed’s zoned middle layer, which is designed with distinct firmness levels for the sleeper’s shoulders, back, and hips. Sleeping with the firm foam under the hips and the medium foam under the back may lead to added discomfort.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Level Sleep Mattress for motion isolation, we asked two sleep testers to lie down side-by-side on the bed. One tester moved around while the other felt for motion transferring across the surface of the mattress. During these tests, the Level Sleep Mattress isolated motion exceptionally well. Neither tester felt surface movement across any of the bed’s firmness zones.

The bed’s excellent motion isolation can be attributed to its top layer of high-resilience polyfoam. This material absorbs motion better than medium- or low-grade polyfoam, allowing it to eliminate most transfer and reduce sleep disruptions for co-sleepers.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noticed some initial off-gassing odor when unboxing the Level Sleep Mattress, but these smells had mostly dissipated when they re-evaluated the bed a few days later. Additionally, most owners do not report long-term off-gassing. We don’t foresee any major odor issues with this mattress.

Pressure Relief

To evaluate the Level Sleep Mattress for pressure relief, our testers took turns lying on a sensory pad that tracks pressure build-up throughout the body. The testers also switched positions to see if pressure increased or decreased when lying on their sides, back, or stomach.

Overall, our testers experienced excellent pressure relief. This is primarily due to the zoned middle layer, which reduces sagging and alleviates pressure around the sleeper’s shoulders, back, and hips. Comparatively, all-foam beds with more conventional comfort and transitional layers often sag in places – especially for heavier individuals. This can prevent even spinal alignment and lead to more pressure throughout the body.

Temperature Neutrality

The Level Sleep Mattress provides better-than-average temperature neutrality compared to most all-foam mattresses. Unlike other all-foam beds, which trap body heat and feel excessively warm, the mattress has a zoned middle layer that prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply. This creates strong surface airflow and helps to maintain a fairly cool, comfortable temperature.

Nonetheless, this bed’s all-foam composition will inevitably trap some body heat, making it less temperature neutral than most hybrid and innerspring models

Edge Support

To evaluate the Level Sleep Mattress for edge support, our testers sat along the perimeter as owners might do when getting in and out of bed. The testers noticed significant sinkage during these tests, though the mattress sagged less in areas around the firmer zones of the middle layer. The testers also took turns lying near the edges of the mattress to check for feelings of “roll-off.” Again, none of the testers felt very secure sleeping near the perimeter.

Edge support for all-foam mattresses is typically fair at best. The high-density foam used in their support cores can withstand some compression, but over time it will begin to sag more. Hybrid and innerspring mattresses usually provide much better edge support due to their thick, steel coil systems.

Noise

During our tests, we found the Level Sleep Mattress was virtually silent when bearing weight. This puts the mattress on par with other all-foam beds in terms of noise potential. Other mattress types are louder by comparison due to their internal components, such as hybrids and innersprings with creaky metal coils, or airbeds with motorized air chambers.

Sex

The Level Sleep Mattress is somewhat responsive, but it lacks the noticeable springiness of hybrid and innersprings that generally make these models better for sex. Couples may have a difficult time using the entire surface of the bed and changing positions, and the foam does not conform closely enough to ensure good traction during sex. However, the Level Sleep Mattress does not produce any noise, making it discreet for couples.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, we evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Our lightweight testers gave very positive ratings to the Level Sleep Mattress. Side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds noted ample cushioning beneath the hips and shoulders, which is largely thanks to the plush top layer. As a result, they experienced even spinal alignment and consistent pressure relief.

Back and stomach sleepers in this weight group also found the mattress comfortable due to its zoned middle layer. This component keeps them on an even plane and prevents excessive sagging around the midsection, but the softer zones cradle the head, neck, and lower body.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

The most favorable ratings for the Level Sleep Mattress came from back sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds. They noted an excellent balance of body-conforming and zoned support, and did not sink too deeply around the midsection – a common issue associated with back sleepers in this weight group.

Ratings from other average weight sleepers were also positive. Side sleepers experienced even spinal alignment thanks to the plush padding of the bed’s top layer, and this helped reduce pressure points around the shoulders and hips. Average weight stomach sleepers also found the mattress very supportive and less prone to sagging than many of its all-foam competitors.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Our heavyweight testers did not feel as comfortable on the Level Sleep Mattress compared to those weighing 230 pounds or less, but their overall ratings were positive. The zoned middle layer offers exceptional support, particularly around the firm shoulder and back zone, and this prevents excessive sagging around the midsection. However, side, back, and stomach sleepers in the heavyweight group found the head and foot zones too soft and prone to sagging.

Additionally, the medium-feel zone around the hips will likely sink deeper than the firm back zone. This can cause some sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds to experience a feeling akin to sliding down the mattress.

How Does the Level Sleep Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

When choosing a new mattress, we encourage shoppers to compare different brands and models in order to determine the most suitable option. In this next section, we’ll see how the Level Sleep Mattress stacks up against a few similarly constructed models from competing brands.

Level Sleep Mattress vs. Allswell Luxe Hybrid

The Allswell Luxe Hybrid is constructed with a memory foam comfort layer and a pocketed coil support core. The mattress excels at edge support due to its thick coil system, and also offers exceptional responsiveness for sex – two areas where the all-foam Level Sleep Mattress is somewhat lacking.

However, the Level Sleep Mattress also has distinct advantages over the Allswell Luxe Hybrid. These include better motion isolation, less noise, and more pressure relief. Both beds are fairly comparable in terms of temperature neutrality. The Level Sleep Mattress sleeps fairly cool thanks to more surface airflow, while the Allswell Luxe Hybrid promotes strong air circulation through the coil layer to help the entire mattress maintain a comfortable temperature.

The Allswell Luxe Hybrid costs considerably less, but the Level Sleep Mattress comes with a much longer sleep trial and product warranty. Sleepers who prefer the highly responsive and supportive feel of a hybrid may find the Allswell model more comfortable, but those looking for an all-foam bed with zoned support should consider the Level Sleep Mattress instead.

Level Sleep Mattress vs. The Casper

The Casper Mattress is a mixed-foam bed constructed with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers. These materials offer a balance of body-conforming and responsiveness for a combined feeling of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress, though the Level Sleep still feels more supportive due to its zoned middle layer.

In other performance categories, these two mattresses are fairly comparable. Both models offer excellent pressure relief, as well as great motion isolation for couples. During our testing, we also found the Casper and Level Sleep Mattresses are best suited to sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less, as heavier individuals may experience uncomfortable sagging.

The Casper Mattress costs slightly less than the Level Sleep Mattress, but neither bed is particularly expensive. We recommend the Casper Mattress to sleepers who enjoy a uniform medium feel and closer body-conforming, while the Level Sleep Mattress is better for those who prefer zoned support.

Level Sleep Mattress vs. EcoCloud

The EcoCloud from WinkBeds is a latex hybrid mattress. Like the Level Sleep Mattress, the EcoCloud has a zoned comfort layer that feels firmer beneath the shoulders, back, and hips while cradling the sleeper’s lighter areas. This results in even overall support for most sleepers, though the EcoCloud is more responsive due to the natural springiness of latex.

The EcoCloud also excels at edge support. Its thick pocketed coils encased in high-density foam help minimize sinkage along the perimeter and prevent feelings of “roll-off” for sleepers. The mattress also provides very good temperature neutrality thanks to its ventilated latex layer and strong airflow through the coils. However, the Level Sleep Mattress offers better motion isolation and more pressure relief for sleepers due to its closer body-conforming.

The EcoCloud is fairly pricey compared to the Level Sleep, even though the latter has a much longer sleep trial. Those who prefer the responsive feel of a latex hybrid should opt for the EcoCloud, but the Level Sleep Mattress offers a better balance of body-conforming and sleeper support.

Level Sleep Mattress vs. Leesa Legend

The Leesa Legend is a hybrid constructed with a ventilated polyfoam comfort layer and a pocketed coil support core. The mattress has a uniform medium-firm (6.5) feel and conforms to a moderate extent, making it best suited to sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds.

The Leesa Legend outperforms the Level Sleep Mattress in certain areas, such as edge support and temperature neutrality. However, this mattress has a very responsive feel, creating a feeling that is akin to sleeping “on” the mattress. As a result, the Leesa Legend does not isolate motion transfer as well as the Level Sleep Mattress, nor does it alleviate as much pressure.

The Leesa Legend is considered a luxury hybrid, and this is reflected in its above-average price-point – though shoppers qualify for free White Glove delivery and old mattress removal. Those seeking a high-quality hybrid should consider the Leesa Legend, while the Level Sleep Mattress is the better model for people who prefer all-foam beds and zoned support.

Level Sleep Mattress vs. GravityLux

The GravityLux by WinkBeds is a memory foam mattress available in three firmness options: medium-soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7). Like the Level Sleep Mattress, the GravityLux has a zoned polyfoam layer that offers enhanced support for the sleeper’s head and neck, shoulders, spine, and hips. However, the GravityLux also has 5 inches of comfort foam over the zoned layer, so sleepers sink more deeply into the mattress.

The GravityLux and Level Sleep Mattress has earned comparable ratings in most performance categories. Both beds isolate motion very well, provide excellent pressure relief, and offer better-than-average temperature neutrality compared to other all-foam beds. Additionally, the beds are prone to excessive sinkage along the edges.

The GravityLux is more expensive than the Level Sleep Mattress, though both beds come with a lifetime warranty. The GravityLux is best suited for sleepers seeking the pressure-relieving body cradle of traditional memory foam, while the Level Sleep Mattress is geared toward those who enjoy a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.

Read our full GravityLux Mattress Review.

Level Sleep Mattress vs. Zoned Mattress

As its name implies, the Zoned Mattress by Brooklyn Bedding offers enhanced support for the sleeper’s body. However, its design differs from that of the Level Sleep Mattress. The Zoned Mattress, a hybrid, has a zoned pocketed coil system. Thicker, lower-gauge coils reinforcing the edges and supporting the sleeper’s shoulders, back, and hips, while thinner, high-gauge coils cradle the head, neck, and legs.

Due to its hybrid construction, the Zoned Mattress is fairly responsive and does not isolate motion as well as the Level Sleep Mattress. It also has a medium (5) feel, making it better suited to lighter side and back sleepers. Heavier individuals – stomach sleepers in particular – will likely find the mattress too soft.

Price-points are comparable for both mattresses, though the Level Sleep Mattress comes with a longer sleep trial and product warranty. Those who prefer the highly responsive feel of a hybrid mattress may find the Zoned Mattress more comfortable, while the Level Sleep Mattress is the better option for people who like sinking into all-foam beds.
