The Bottom Line.

  • The Bear Pro Mattress has a comfort layer of copper-infused foam to regulate temperature and protect against allergens and bacteria.
  • The medium to medium-firm feel balances support and conforming.
  • The Celliant™ Sleep Technology fabric cover is engineered to help promote circulation, support cell recovery, and regulate temperature.

Bear Pro Mattress Overview

Bear Pro Mattress Overview

Bear is a U.S.-based company that produces three mattress models: the Bear Mattress, the Bear Hybrid Mattress, and the Bear Pro Mattress.

The Bear Pro Mattress is constructed of four layers of foam. The top comfort layer uses 1 inch of copper-infused foam, while a secondary comfort layer is composed of 1.5 inches of gel memory foam. Next is a transition layer of 2.5 inches of responsive polyfoam that acts as a buffer between the softness of the comfort layer and the firmer support layer.

The support layer is made of 7 inches of high-density polyfoam. The removable mattress cover is composed of Celliant® fabric. In total, the Bear Pro Mattress measures 12 inches thick. Its feel is medium to medium-firm, ranking around 6 on the 10-point firmness scale.

In this review, we’ll examine the Bear Pro Mattress’s construction, pricing, and performance. We’ll also compare the Bear Pro Mattress to similar mattress models and detail Bear’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

  • People who tend to sleep hot on foam mattresses. The Celliant® fabric and copper-infused foam comfort layer may help regulate temperature to prevent excessive heat retention.
  • Sleepers seeking extra muscle recovery. Celliant fabric uses a proprietary mineral matrix engineered to aid cell and muscle recovery.
  • Couples who tend to awaken due to motion or noise. The Bear Pro Mattress’s foam layers isolate motion well and are extremely quiet.
  • Those with chronic pain. Multiple foam layers contour to the body for pressure relief and spinal alignment. Foam responds to heat and pressure to shape to your body, which helps spread your weight evenly across the surface of the mattress, thereby reducing the pressure on key areas, like your shoulders and hips.

Not Recommended for...

  • Sleepers who prefer a springier mattress. Like other all-foam mattresses, the Bear Pro’s foam layers conform to the body and may not be ideal for people who prefer to sleep “on” a mattress rather than “in” a mattress.
  • Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds. Heavier individuals may find the Bear Pro Mattress too soft, especially if they enjoy a firm feel.

Our Video Review

Our testing team evaluated the Bear Pro Mattress for conforming, motion isolation, edge support, and other performance factors. Check out their findings in the video below.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Bear Pro Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, overnight sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

As the above table shows, The Bear Pro Mattress excels in several performance factors, including pressure relief, motion isolation, and noise. A more detailed breakdown of the mattress’s performance appears below.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Bear Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

How Is the Bear Pro Mattress Constructed?

Bear Pro Mattress Review

Cover

The Bear Pro Mattress has a removable Celliant® fabric cover. Celliant® fabric is engineered to reflect the body’s energy back towards it, which the manufacturer claims can aid recovery, promote restful sleep, and regulate temperature.

Comfort Layers

The Bear Pro Mattress has two comfort layers. The top layer is made of 1 inch of copper-infused foam. Copper is a thermal conductor, so the infused copper wicks heat away from the body. Copper is also antimicrobial and kills many of the allergens, bacteria, and viruses that come in contact with the metal.

The second layer uses 1.5 inches of gel memory foam, which further disperses heat. Bear does not share the exact density of each foam layer. These two comfort layers conform to the body by responding to heat and weight, providing pressure relief and cradling the body.

Transitional Layer

A 2.5-inch layer of responsive transitional foam serves as a barrier between the softer comfort layers and the firmer support layer. It prevents sleepers from sinking in too far and interacting with the base layer.

Support Layers

The Bear Pro Mattress’s support layer uses 7 inches of high-density polyfoam. This layer serves as a base to support the upper layers of the mattress.

Mattress Height

The Bear Pro Mattress is 12 inches thick, which is slightly thicker than the average mattress. The extra thickness may make the Bear Pro Mattress appropriate for sleepers who have difficulty getting into and/or out of bed.

Product Name Firmness Setting Thickness Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components
Bear Pro Mattress 6.0 (Medium to Medium-Firm) 12” 7” High-density polyfoam 1” Copper-infused foam

1.5” Gel memory foam

2.5” Transitional polyfoam

Celliant® fabric (removable)

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Bear Pro Mattress is a great option for sleepers looking for extra contouring and cushioning. The mattress is constructed of four foam layers that total 12 inches. This thicker construction allows more body-cradling than many mattresses. The two comfort layers conform closely to the body, which can help relieve pain and pressure.

The Bear Pro Mattress uses 1 inch of copper-infused polyfoam and 1.5 inches of gel memory foam in the comfort layer, providing the hug associated with foam. The 2.5-inch transitional layer and 7-inch support layer give the mattress its structural integrity and provides a firmer edge than many all-foam mattresses.

The Bear Pro Mattress is medium to medium-firm, rating around 6 on the 10-point firmness scale. This firmness can accommodate most sleep positions across weight groups. That being said, the mattress may be slightly soft for sleepers over 230 pounds.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Bear Pro Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as reviews from verified mattress owners.

Durability

Bear has been in business since 2014. The Bear Pro Mattress is the newest addition to the company’s line of mattresses. Because the mattress is still fairly new, there is not yet long-term data on its durability, so we based our rating on the materials and construction.

As a general rule, the lifespan of a memory foam mattress is determined largely by the quality and density of the foam. The Bear Pro Mattress is constructed of high-quality foams, so we would expect its lifespan to be on par with other memory foam mattresses, which typically last around seven to eight years. However, usage can also play a role in a mattress’s longevity.

Over time, body impressions may form on the sleep surface. This is normal with all-foam mattresses. To prevent deep indentations, we recommend rotating the Bear Pro Mattress every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

Bear Pro Mattress Review

We found that the Bear Pro Mattress isolates motion very well, as we expect with mattresses with slower response foams. The foam absorbs a significant amount of motion, preventing it from being felt across the surface of the bed. The Bear Pro Mattress prevented motion transfer enough that our overnight sleep testers reported that they were not disrupted by their sleep partners moving during the night.

Given these results, we recommend the mattress for sleepers who are easily disturbed by motion transfer across the mattress surface. The Bear Pro Mattress isolates a significant amount of motion, so it may help promote a more restful night’s sleep for those who awaken when their partner stirs.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noted a slight initial odor, as is common in memory foam mattresses. Unpacking a mattress can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are responsible for the odor associated with off-gassing. The odor of the Bear Pro Mattress was not overpowering and dissipated quickly.

While we did not find the odor significant, customers who are sensitive to smells may want to keep this in mind and give their Bear Pro Mattress time to air out in a well-ventilated room before they use it.

Pressure Relief

Bear Pro Mattress Review

We tested the Bear Pro Mattress’s pressure relief by having our sleep testers lie on a sensory pad that measures pressure build-up. We conducted these tests with sleepers from different weight groups and mapped the pressure to get a clearer idea of how individuals interacted with the mattress.

Our testing found that the Bear Pro Mattress conforms well and provides pressure relief. The two foam comfort layers contour to the body, distributing weight evenly and reducing pressure points.

Because of the bed’s strong conforming ability, our testers found that the Bear Pro Mattress performs well for all sleeping positions, including side sleeping. However, our lightweight (under 130 pounds) sleepers experienced more pressure than other weight groups due to the mattress’s firmness.

Temperature Neutrality

Our tests found that the Bear Pro Mattress traps some body heat due to its all-foam construction. However, its composition includes several features that allow it to regulate temperature better than many foam mattresses, so it may be appropriate for sleepers who want a foam mattress but tend to sleep hot.

The top comfort layer is constructed of copper-infused foam. Copper is a thermal conductor, pulling heat away from the body. The second comfort layer uses gel memory foam, which also wicks away heat. The breathable Celliant® fabric mattress cover further regulates temperature by allowing cooling airflow.

Overall, our testers found that the Bear Pro Mattress slept cooler than many all-foam mattresses, but it may still retain some heat.

Edge Support

Bear Pro Mattress Review

Our testing team found the Bear Pro Mattress has good edge support. As is standard with all-foam mattresses, we found noticeable sinkage when approaching the edge of the bed. However, the high-density support layer does not compress as excessively as many foam mattresses, making it easier to sit or sleep near the perimeter of the bed without excessive instability.

Noise

We found the Bear Pro Mattress to be completely silent. Mattress noise is typically caused by coil systems or air chambers. Because all-foam mattresses lack these components, they are traditionally quiet if not completely silent.

The Bear Pro Mattress is constructed entirely of foam, making it exceptionally quiet. The combination of its motion isolation and whisper-quiet performance may make it a strong option for people who are easily disturbed during the night.

Sex

The Bear Pro Mattress’s foam construction does not offer the bounce and responsiveness of innerspring or hybrid mattresses. The foam conforms closely to the body and is slow to respond, so changing positions may be more difficult.

This could inhibit sexual activity for some couples. Additionally, polyfoam and memory foam traditionally provide very little bounce. Since many couples find bounce beneficial for sexual activity, the Bear Pro Mattress’s lack of springiness may be a drawback.

However, the Bear Pro Mattress has sturdier edges than many all-foam mattresses, so more of the surface of the bed may be usable, and the close conforming provides added traction. The Bear Pro Mattress also does not produce noise, so it is very discreet for sex.

Sleeper Ratings

In this section, we’ll discuss our sleeper ratings for the Bear Pro Mattress in more depth.

The ideal firmness and thickness settings for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, our team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Bear Pro Mattress Review

Our lightweight testers noted that the Bear Pro Mattress has a somewhat firm feel. The mattress provides good support and moderate conforming, though our lightweight sleepers did not experience as much conforming as our heavier sleepers.

Lightweight sleepers often prefer soft or medium-soft mattresses for greater conforming, so the medium to medium-firm feel of the Bear Pro Mattress may be suitable for sleepers under 130 pounds who enjoy a firmer feel.

Our lightweight testers rated the Bear Pro Mattress as good for side sleeping and stomach sleeping and very good for back sleeping. Since the Bear Pro Mattress is somewhat firm for many lightweight sleepers, side and stomach sleepers may experience more pressure points than would be ideal. Lightweight back sleepers may appreciate the Bear Pro Mattress’s firm, stable support.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Bear Pro Mattress Review

Our average weight testers experienced contouring and support on the Bear Pro Mattress. Across all positions, the mattress conformed closely, distributing body weight and providing pressure relief.

Sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds often prefer medium to medium-firm mattresses that balance conforming and support. Our testers’ findings followed this trend.

Our average weight testers rated the Bear Pro mattress as very good for side and back sleeping and good for stomach sleeping. Sleeping on their sides, our average weight testers felt the Bear Pro Mattress provided enough contouring to relieve pressure points thanks to its two foam comfort layers.

Our average weight sleepers also felt the mattress provided very good support for back sleeping. The overall firmness of the Bear Pro Mattress may be appropriate for most average weight stomach sleepers, and our testers found it performed well for stomach sleeping. However, like most other mattresses, sleepers may still experience some aches and pains associated with stomach sleeping.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Bear Pro Mattress Review

Our heavyweight sleepers found the Bear Pro Mattress supportive and conforming across sleep positions.

Sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds tend to prefer medium-firm to firm mattresses. Softer mattresses often sag too much or allow heavier sleepers to sink in too deeply for proper spinal alignment, so the slightly firmer feel of the Bear Pro Mattress may provide cradling without excessive sink. The medium to medium-firm feel of the Bear Pro mattress is a good option for heavier individuals who prefer mid-level firmness.

Our heavyweight testers rated the Bear Pro Mattress as good across all sleep positions. Side sleepers may enjoy the conforming feeling of the Bear Pro, but the mattress could be slightly too soft for some, which may put the spine out of alignment.

Similarly, some heavyweight back sleepers may not find the Bear Pro Mattress firm enough for ideal support. Stomach sleepers may enjoy the plushness of the comfort layers, but they may still experience some aches and pains due to the nature of the sleep position.

How Does the Bear Pro Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

When searching for a new mattress, we urge shoppers to compare different brands and models in order to find their most suitable option. In this next section, we’ll see how the Bear Pro Mattress stacks up against other Bear models and similarly constructed mattresses from competing brands.

Bear Pro vs. Bear Mattress

The Bear Pro Mattress and the Bear Mattress share many similarities. Both mattresses are constructed entirely of foam encased in Celliant fabric covers. They also both limit motion transfer well and are extremely quiet.

However, the Bear Mattress is slightly firmer than the Bear Pro Mattress, rating around 7 (firm) on the 10-point firmness scale. The Bear Pro Mattress rates 6, which is a bit closer to the mid-range firmness most sleepers prefer.

The Bear Mattress uses three layers of foam instead of four. The comfort layer of the Bear Pro Mattress uses two layers of foam: a layer of copper-infused polyfoam and a layer of gel memory foam. In contrast, the Bear Mattress’s comfort layer uses just one layer of foam, which is a graphite memory foam.

While all of these layers are engineered to disperse heat, the presence of two such layers in the Bear Pro Mattress may provide better temperature neutrality. Because of this, the Bear Pro Mattress might have an edge for those who tend to sleep hot, while sleepers looking for a cozier feel might enjoy the Bear Mattress.

Additionally, the two comfort layers in the Bear Pro may provide a better body-hugging sensation than the single comfort layer of the Bear Mattress. Sleepers looking for pressure relief may prefer the Bear Pro mattress.

The Bear Pro Mattress is 12 inches thick, while the Bear Mattress is 10 inches thick. Since the Bear Pro Mattress is taller than the Bear Mattress, it may be a good choice for sleepers who struggle to get into or out of lower beds. Sleepers who prefer a lower mattress profile may prefer the Bear Mattress.

Both beds rate well across all sleep positions and weight groups, but our tests found that the Bear Pro performed better for heavyweight sleepers (over 230 pounds), while the Bear performed better for lightweight and average weight sleepers (under 230 pounds), which is likely due to the firmness differences. Therefore, heavyweight sleepers might prefer the Bear Pro Mattress, and lightweight sleepers might prefer the Bear Mattress.

Across sizes, the Bear Mattress is less expensive than Bear Pro Mattress.

Bear Pro vs. Bear Hybrid

The Bear Hybrid Mattress is another model in the line. While the Bear Pro Mattress is constructed entirely of foam, the Bear Hybrid Mattress uses a five-layer hybrid design that couples multiple layers of foam with an innerspring coil system. Both mattresses have Celliant™  fabric covers and are similarly firm, falling around a 6 on the 10-point rating scale.

Due to the differences in construction, the Bear Pro and Bear Hybrid vary a great deal in performance. We rate the Bear Pro higher in conforming, motion isolation, and noise. However, the Bear Hybrid’s innerspring layer gives it extra edge support and more bounce. Sleepers who are easily disturbed by motion and noise may prefer the Bear Pro Mattress. Sleepers who want a more responsive sleep surface may prefer the Bear Hybrid Mattress.

Sleepers who find it difficult to get into or out of bed may also prefer the Bear Hybrid Mattress. The Bear Hybrid Mattress is 14 inches thick, while the Bear Pro Mattress is 12 inches thick, and this extra height may make it more accessible. Additionally, the Bear Hybrid Mattress’s sturdier edges may make it more comfortable to sit on the edge of the mattress, and this can be beneficial when entering or exiting the bed.

Our sleep testers generally rated the Bear Pro Mattress higher for most weight groups and sleep positions, so the Bear Pro Mattress may be preferable for those who change positions often or sleep with a partner in a different weight group. However, we gave the Bear Hybrid Mattress a higher rating for lightweight (under 130 pounds) back sleepers, so it may appeal to those sleepers.

The Bear Hybrid is the more expensive option than the Bear Pro Mattress.

Bear Mattress vs. The Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf Mattress is another all-foam mattress. Like the Bear Pro, the Loom & Leaf measures 12 inches thick and is constructed of four foam layers.

While the Bear Pro is available in one firmness setting (about 6 on the 10-point scale), the Loom & Leaf mattress comes in two firmness options, which rate around 5.5 and 8 on the firmness scale. The Bear Pro’s firmness is a mid-range firmness that can accommodate many sleepers. However, the Loom & Leaf’s two firmness options may be preferable for lightweight (under 130 pounds) and heavyweight (over 230 pounds) sleepers.

The Loom & Leaf Relaxed Firm is softer than the Bear Pro, so it may be a good choice for lightweight sleepers since it may provide more body-cradling and pressure relief. The Loom & Leaf Firm is firmer than the Bear Pro, so it may provide extra support that heavyweight sleepers often require while preventing them from sinking in too deeply. These differences in firmness and performance are a result of the foams used in each mattress’s comfort layer.

Based on our tests, both mattresses perform well in motion isolation, pressure relief, and noise, but the Bear Pro rates better in durability and temperature neutrality. Due to its use of cooling technology, like the Celliant™  fabric cover and copper-infused foam, this gives the Bear Pro has an advantage for those who sleep hot.

The Bear Pro Mattress is less expensive than the Loom & Leaf Mattress.

Read our full Loom and Leaf mattress review.

Bear Mattress vs. The Casper

The Bear Pro Mattress and the Casper Mattress have a lot in common. Both are constructed of four layers of foam and total 12 inches thick. Each has a pressure-relieving memory foam comfort layer and a high-density foam support layer. Our testers found both mattresses perform exceptionally well in motion isolation, conforming, and noise and can accommodate all sleep positions across weight groups, so they might be good options for couples with different weights and sleep styles.

The Casper rates 5 on the 10-point firmness scale, so it is slightly softer than the Bear Pro. The comfort layer uses 1.5 inches of polyfoam and 1.5 inches of 4 PCF memory foam. Paired with the softer firmness, this construction may provide extra pressure relief for lightweight (under 130 pounds) sleepers by offering more hug.

Heavyweight (over 230 pounds) sleepers may find they sink into the mattress too deeply. Because of this, the Casper Mattress may be a better choice for lightweight sleepers, while the Bear Pro Mattress may be preferable for heavyweight sleepers.

The Bear Pro and the Casper come in at a similar price point, though the Casper Mattress is usually slightly less expensive.

Read our full Casper mattress review.

Bear Mattress vs. GravityLux

Like the Bear Pro Mattress, the GravityLux Mattress is constructed of multiple foam layers, including a comfort layer of foam engineered to prevent heat retention. The GravityLux Mattress has an extra-thick comfort layer, composed of a 2 inches of gel-infused foam and a 3 inches of memory foam. The added thickness of the comfort layer can provide exceptional contouring.

However, since the Bear Pro also offers great contouring, either mattress may be a good choice for sleepers looking for pressure relief. The Bear Pro and the GravityLux also both performed very well in our tests of motion isolation and noise.

Our testers found both mattresses supportive and conforming, but the GravityLux’s Zoned Progression Foam™ layer sets it apart. This layer is constructed of 3 inches of polyfoam and provides targeted support to key areas of the body, with firmer support near the hips and a softer feel near the shoulders and legs to promote proper spinal alignment. This zoned construction may make the GravityLux Mattress a strong choice for sleepers who find their hips tend to sink in too deeply for proper spinal alignment.

While both the Bear Pro and the GravityLux tested well in all sleep positions for all weight groups, our testers rated the GravityLux better for lightweight (under 130 pounds) sleepers, heavyweight (over 230 pounds) sleepers, side sleepers, and back sleepers. This is due in part to the firmness.

While the Bear Pro Mattress comes in one firmness (6), the GravityLux Mattress is available in three firmness options: Soft (4), Medium (5.5), and Firm (7). Lightweight sleepers often do not weigh enough to experience as much cradling from firmer mattresses, so the GravityLux soft option may be preferable for lightweight sleepers who want more hug from their mattress.

The Firm option may provide extra support for heavyweight sleepers, who may sink in too deeply for proper spinal alignment when sleeping on softer mattresses.

The GravityLux Mattresses is more expensive than the Bear Pro Mattress.
