Saatva vs Avocado Mattress Overview
Saatva vs Avocado Mattress Overview
Established in 2010, U.S.-based Saatva sells mattresses, bed frames, and bedding. The company produces six mattresses, including the Saatva Classic flagship model. Featuring a durable coil-on-coil support layer, this innerspring hybrid mattress allows users to choose from medium-soft, medium-firm, and firm settings. This versatility makes the Saatva an ideal choice for combination sleepers and customers of all sizes.
Avocado Green Mattresses was founded in 2015 to meet the growing demand for certified organic and natural mattresses and bedding products. The California company’s mattresses include the flagship Avocado Green. While this latex hybrid model ranks 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale, customers have the option of purchasing a latex pillow-top, which creates a softer sleep surface.
Please note:
In addition to the Saatva Classic, Saatva also offers the Loom & Leaf, a memory foam mattress; the Solaire airbed mattress; the flippable Zenhaven model; the Saatva HD, for heavier sleepers; and the Saatva Youth model.
Along with their flagship model, Avocado produces a vegan mattress.
The Saatva and the Avocado both provide sleepers with multiple firmness options. Our testing team rated both mattresses above-average for heavier people, temperature neutrality, and edge support. However, each model is made from different materials and comes with different strengths and drawbacks. Read on to learn more about how the Saatva and the Avocado are made and who they are best for, along with each company’s shipping policy, warranty information, and delivery methods.

Motion Isolation
x
A measure of how effectively a mattress absorbs motion across its surface, preventing partner disturbance.
Like other innersprings, the Saatva mattress does not absorb or minimize motion to a significant extent. This may be problematic for certain sleepers, such as couples who share a bed, since minimal motion isolation can lead to sleep disruptions.

Off-gassing
x
Most new products emit chemical smells after being removed from packaging. Off-gassing odors are considered non-toxic, but can be quite unpleasant nonetheless.
Since the Saatva mattress is not compressed for shipping, owners should not notice any off-gassing when they recieve their mattress.

Pressure Relief
x
This refers to the degree to which a mattress molds to or cradles the contours of the body. This helps alleviate pressure point pain, especially on the hips and shoulders.
Saatva features coil-on-coil construction and memory foam in the comfort layer. This allows the mattress to conform more closely and relieve pressure to a greater extent than many competing innersprings — but all-foam and latex mattresses are considered the best option for sleepers that prefer close conforming and targeted pressure relief.

Temperature Neutrality
x
The temperature of a mattress throughout the night is affected by how much body heat is retained. Several factors affect temperature neutrality, including material composition, layer thickness, and dissipation of heat through airflow.
Mattresses that contain foam and memory foam tend to sleep the hottest. Saatva has a more traditional innerspring construction so our testing along with data analysis show that it's one of the cooler mattress options on the market today compared to all-foam competitors.

Edge Support
x
The degree to which the perimeter of the mattress supports body weight. In some cases, mattresses may sink when weight is applied. This sinkage, often called “roll-off”, affects how closely you might sleep to the edge of the bed.
Innerspring mattresses tend to have optimal edge support and the Saatva is no exception. Customers report a consistent sleep surface (no-roll off when sleeping towards the edge) as well as above-average push back when sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Noise
x
Certain mattresses – particularly those with coils – can be quite noisy when bearing weight. Others are nearly silent. Material composition is often the limiting factor for noise potential.
Roughly 7% of Saatva owners cite noise as a complaint. This is on par with noise complaints from all innerspring owners.

Sex
x
Mattresses that are bouncier and more responsive tend to be better for sex, as they’re easier to change positions on. In contrast, unresponsive mattresses can cause couples to have trouble switching positions.
The Saatva mattress is highly responsive and fairly bouncy, making it excellent for sex.

Durability
x
Specifies how long the product maintains structure, providing comfort and support before it begins to deteriorate. For reference, the average mattress lifespan is 6-8 years.
Latex is highly durable. Because the Avocado Green substitutes polyfoam with latex in the comfort layer, the mattress has a longer-than-average projected lifespan especially coupled with very low gauge (firm) coils in the support core

Sleep Position Ratings
Saatva Mattress
With three firmness options, the Saatva has something to offer sleepers of every size and type. Our testers under 130 pounds had mixed, but generally positive feelings about the mattress. They particularly liked the “Plush Soft” and “Luxury Firm” models, which offered additional cushioning and support for back, stomach, and side sleepers alike.
Average and heavyweight sleepers also found the Saatva comfortable, with heavier individuals preferring the “Firm” option. Stomach sleepers of all sizes enjoyed the additional support from the model’s dual coil layers, avoiding the sagging issues common to many mattresses.
Avocado Mattress
While many lightweight sleepers prefer softer mattresses, our testers still found the medium-firm-to-firm Avocado to be comfortable, with or without the pillow-top. Lightweight and average sleepers alike had generally positive feelings about the Avocado, although side sleepers in particular preferred to use the pillow-top for extra comfort.
In contrast, individuals over 230 pounds found the model comfortable and supportive without the pillow-top, whether they slept on their sides, stomachs, or backs. Heavier sleepers also found that the Avocado also offered exceptional spinal alignment and pressure relief.

Mattress Construction
Next let’s look at how the Saatva and Avocado Mattress models are made. The table below lists firmness, thickness, weight, and composition specs for both beds.
Made from foam and fiber padding, the Saatva’s Euro-top cover adds a softer feel to all three models. The Euro-tops for the “Plush Soft” and “Luxury Firm” settings both feature 1.25 inches of polyfoam, while the polyfoam layer for the “Firm” setting is 1.5 inches thick.
Beneath the polyfoam on all three models is a 0.75-inch layer of dacron fibers. While every Saatva features a 1-inch two-tiered comfort layer made from polyfoam and memory foam, the “Plush Soft” model includes a third layer of body-conforming polyfoam.
The Saatva’s transitional layer consists of 4-inch, medium-gauge pocketed coils, which provide just enough responsiveness and prevent the sleeper from sinking too deeply into the support layer. Both the 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch models feature a stabilizing support core made from 13-gauge recycled steel bonnell coils. However, the 11.5-inch Saatva includes 4-inch coils, while the thicker model contains 7-inch coils.
How Is the Avocado Mattress Built?
The Avocado’s non-removable cover is made from 100% GOTS-certified organic cotton, and free from fire retardants and other chemicals. Underneath, however, the comfort layer features naturally fire retardant, GOTS-certified wool sourced from Avocado’s own collective farm. A moisture wicking material, wool also provides temperature control.
Mattresses with the pillow-top have 2 inches of organic Dunlop latex beneath the standard 2-inch latex comfort layer. Softer than the standard layer, the latex pillow-top offers additional bounce and reduces allergens.
The Avocado’s support core consists of a 1-inch layer of firm Dunlop latex on top of a pocketed innerspring. The innerspring contains nearly 1,414 recycled steel coils that come in three gauges and form five ergonomic areas throughout the mattress. Each ergonomic zone offers varying levels of support and pressure relief. For additional edge support, the Avocado also features a reinforced steel perimeter.
