Yogabed Mattress Review

Written by Tuck Staff

Yogabed Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The Yogabed Mattress by Yogasleep is a medium-firm memory foam mattress that conforms closely to the sleeper’s body for pressure relief.
  • The foam layers absorb motion, reducing motion transfer.
  • The mattress cover can be removed and washed to reduce allergens and maintain a cleaner sleep surface.

Yogabed Mattress Overview

Yogabed Mattress Overview

Originally called Marpac, Yogasleep was founded in 1962. The company initially focused on producing the Dohm, a white noise machine. From there, Yogasleep’s product line expanded to include sheets, pillows, mattress protectors, weighted blankets, bed frames, scent diffusers, diffuser oils, linen sprays, and mattresses. Yogasleep produces two mattresses: the Unplug and the Yogabed. Both models feature all-foam constructions.

The Yogabed Mattress is constructed of four layers of foam that total 10 inches thick. The top layer uses Yoga Instant Response Foam, which is a proprietary polyfoam engineered to offer enhanced cooling, pressure relief, and support. The second layer is YogaGel Memory Foam, which provides support while its gel infusion offers cooling. The support core uses high-density polyfoam to provide stable support, while the base layer uses firmer high-density polyfoam to reinforce the mattress.

The Yogabed has a medium-firm feel, rating around 6.5 on the 10-point firmness scale.

In this review, we’ll provide an in-depth look at the Yogabed’s construction, performance, and pricing. We’ll go on to compare the Yogabed to similar mattress models on the market and provide an overview of Yogasleep’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

  • Sleepers who weigh between 130-230 pounds. Due to its medium-firm feel, the Yogabed can provide a good balance between cradling and support for average-weight sleepers.
  • Couples who are easily awoken during the night. The Yogabed is virtually silent and isolates motion well, so sleepers are unlikely to be disturbed by their partner’s movement during the night.
  • People with chronic pain. The close conforming of the Yogabed’s comfort layers can help relieve pressure points.

Not Recommended for...

  • Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds. While our heavyweight sleep testers thought the Yogabed Mattress was relatively comfortable, they felt they sunk in too deeply for proper spinal alignment.
  • People who sleep/sit near the edge of the mattress. While the Yogabed’s edge is sturdier than some memory foam mattresses on the market, our testers still experienced enough sinkage to discourage them from sitting or sleeping close to the perimeter, which may reduce the overall usable surface of the mattress.

Tuck's Video Review

Our testing team unboxed the Yogabed Mattress and gave their initial impressions on conforming, motion isolation, edge support, and other performance factors. Check out their findings in the video below.

Ratings Summary

Tuck’s testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Yogabed Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

The Yogabed earned high ratings in our motion isolation, pressure relief, and noise categories. For additional information on the Yogabed’s performance and how our testers determined these ratings, read below.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Yogabed Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

How Is the Yogabed Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Yogabed comes with a Zip-n-Wash cover. The cover features Thermocool fabric, which is designed to regulate body temperature. This cover is removable and machine-washable for easy cleaning.

Comfort Layers

The top layer of the mattress is composed of 1 inch of Instant Response YogaFoam. Instant Response YogaFoam is a proprietary polyfoam designed to offer the conforming of memory foam without the slow response time. This foam has a density of 5 pounds per cubic foot (PCF) and an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 18. This high-density foam provides close conforming, lending to the mattress’s pressure relief. ILD measures firmness, and the rating of 18 is indicative of a medium-soft feel, which also sleepers to sink in for more hug.

The next layer uses 2 inches of 4 PCF YogaGel Memory Foam with an ILD of 10. This is a medium-density memory foam, which provides a balance between conforming, support, and temperature neutrality. The ILD of 10 means this foam is relatively soft, allowing heavier areas of the body, like the hips and shoulders, to sink in more deeply.

Both of these comfort layers are ventilated to fight the heat retention often associated with foam comfort layers.

Support Layers

The Yogabed’s support system is constructed of two layers.

The main support core is constructed of a 5-inch layer of 1.8 PCF polyfoam with an ILD of 32. This high-density support layer is firm to provide added support.

The final layer of the mattress uses 2 inches of 1.8 PCF polyfoam with an ILD of 40. This second high-density support layer is firmer to reinforce the mattress evenly.

Mattress Height

The Yogabed Mattress is 10 inches thick, making it an average-profile mattress. The two comfort layers combine to total 3 inches thick, while the two support layers total 7 inches. These comfort and support systems are close to the average thickness, offering a balance of cradling and support.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Yogabed Mattress is medium-firm, coming in around 6.5 on the firmness scale. This is on the firmer end of the range most sleepers tend to prefer.

While the mattress is firm enough to offer support for most sleepers, our testers found the relatively low ILD of the comfort layers added a touch of plushness to the surface of the mattress.

Memory foam has high point elasticity, which means that the mattress compresses predominantly directly beneath the sleeper’s body rather than spreading the compression over a wider area. Because of this, our sleep testers noted significant hug that made them feel like they were sleeping “in” the bed rather than “on” the bed. Our sleep testers enjoyed significant pressure relief from the Yogabed Mattress’s close conforming.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Durability

We expect the Yogabed Mattress to last approximately as long as the average all-foam mattress. The mattress uses a high-density top layer and two high-density polyfoam support layers. Higher-density foams tend to be more durable than lower density foams, which may make the Yogabed more durable than some mattresses on the market.

To improve the longevity of your mattress, we recommend rotating it at least once or twice each year. Rotating your mattress can lead to more even wear and tear.

Motion Isolation

We asked two of our sleep testers to lie on the Yogabed Mattress at the same time. One rolled around, while the other tried to feel movement across the sleep surface. The stationary sleep testers reported feeling very minimal motion. The all-foam construction absorbed a significant amount of motion, preventing it from being felt across the surface of the mattress.

Our overnight testers who sleep with partners noted similar results. While they noticed when their partners moved around significantly, they were not disturbed by their partners changing positions during the night.

Off-Gassing

When they first unpackaged the Yogabed Mattress, our sleep testers noted moderate off-gassing odors. After 24 hours, these odors had mostly dissipated. After 72 hours, our testers could no longer detect the smell.

Pressure Relief

In order to assess pressure relief, we put a sensory pad on the Yogabed Mattress and asked sleep testers from different weight groups to lie on it. While our sleep testers lied in different positions, we measured pressure build-up.

The Yogabed Mattress offered very good pressure relief and cradling, but these results varied between weight groups and sleep positions. Our average-weight back sleepers had the best results, experiencing very few pressure points. The Yogabed Mattress was a little too firm for our lightweight side sleepers, creating some pressure points around their shoulders and hips. The Yogabed Mattress was a little soft for our heavyweight side sleepers and stomach sleepers, allowing their hips to sink in a little too deeply.

Temperature Neutrality

Because the foam comfort layers conformed so closely to our testers, it trapped some heat against their bodies. This issue is quite common in mattresses that use memory foam, so we would expect similar results from most similarly constructed mattresses.

Edge Support

Sleep testers from different weight groups sat near the perimeter of the Yogabed Mattress to check for sinkage. Our sleep testers found the Yogabed had fair edge support.

Our lightweight testers felt the edge was sturdy enough to allow them to get into and out of the bed with ease. Our average weight testers found the sinkage made it somewhat more challenging. Our heavyweight testers experienced significant sinkage while sitting near the perimeter, which made it more challenging for them to enter and exit the bed.

When our testers lied near the edge of the bed, they experienced similar results. The lightweight testers experienced some sinkage, but not enough to make the surface feel unstable. Our average-weight testers noticed more compression, which made them feel like they might roll off if they lied too close to the edge. Our heavyweight testers felt they experienced enough sinkage to limit the overall usable space of the mattress.

Because most all-foam mattresses do not feature reinforced edges, we would expect similar results from most foam models.

Noise

Foam mattresses tend to be virtually silent when bearing weight, and the Yogabed Mattress is no exception. Even when they moved around on the mattress a lot, our sleep testers did not notice any noise emanating from the Yogabed Mattress.

Sex

The Yogabed Mattress is not as bouncy as most innerspring or hybrid mattresses, so some couples might not find it responsive enough for sex. Like most other all-foam models, the Yogabed conforms to a sleeper’s body, which may make it more difficult to move across the surface of the bed. However, this conforming can also provide traction, which may be beneficial for amorous activities.
Because the Yogabed does not have reinforced edges, couples may feel they need to avoid the perimeter so that they don’t risk rolling off. The Yogabed is virtually silent, however, so it is more discreet than many mattresses on the market.

Sleeper Ratings

Mattress comfort is subjective, but many factors can contribute to what makes some models feel more comfortable to some individuals. Weight, body shape, and preferred sleeping position are some of the most notable factors that influence how a sleeper experiences a mattress. To paint a clearer picture of how the mattress performs, we had sleep testers from different weight groups and with different position preferences lie on the Yogabed Mattress.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Because lightweight sleepers exert less force on a mattress, they usually prefer a softer feel that allows them to sink in enough to experience pressure relief. While the Yogabed is slightly firmer than lightweight sleepers tend to prefer, our testers still felt it provided a good sleep experience.

Our lightweight testers felt the Yogabed was best suited for back and stomach sleeping. The firm feel provided even support that prevented our testers’ midsections from sinking in too deeply.

The Yogabed was not as popular with our lightweight side sleepers. Because of the mattress’s medium-firm feel, our lightweight testers noted some pressure around their hips and shoulders.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Our average-weight sleep testers gave the Yogabed the highest marks of any of our weight groups. While the medium-firm feel provided good support, the softer comfort layers gave the mattress a plusher feel.

When sleeping on their backs, our average-weight testers felt the mattress performed very well, providing a stable, even surface without feeling hard. Our side sleepers enjoyed some contouring but experienced slight pressure build-up around their hips and shoulders. Our stomach sleepers felt the Yogabed prevented their hips from sinking in too deeply while offering even support.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Sleepers who weigh over 230 pounds often prefer firmer, thicker mattresses, which tend to provide more support. The Yogabed’s medium-firm feel and 10-inch profile provided sufficient support for our heavyweight testers, but they did not feel the Yogabed Mattress was ideal for their needs and preferences.

When sleeping on their sides and stomachs, our heavyweight testers reported that their midsections sank in too deeply, which put more pressure on their spines. Our heavyweight back sleepers felt the Yogabed Mattress provided a good deal of hug, but offered enough support to keep their spines better aligned.

Our heavyweight testers also noted that the Yogabed’s edges did not feel sturdy enough for them to make full use of the mattress without feeling like they might roll off the bed.

How Does the Yogabed Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

Yogabed vs. Yogasleep Unplug

The Yogasleep Unplug Mattress is the other mattress in Yogasleep’s lineup. Like the Yogabed, the Unplug is a memory foam model. The Unplug has a medium (5) feel, so it is softer than the Yogabed Mattress. Both mattresses rated approximately equivalently with our average-weight sleepers, but the differences in firmness caused our lightweight sleepers to favor the Unplug and our heavyweight sleepers to prefer the Yogabed.

While the Yogabed is constructed of four layers of foam, the Unplug uses just two layers: 2 inches of YogaGel Memory Foam and 8 inches of polyfoam. Despite the differences in construction, our sleep testers rated both mattresses similarly across our performance categories.

The Unplug comes in at a lower price point than the Yogabed, so it may be a good choice for shoppers on a budget. However, the Yogabed comes in all standard mattress sizes, while the Unplug is not currently available in twin XL or California king sizes.

Yogabed vs. Tuft & Needle Mint

Like the Yogabed, the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress is medium-firm all-foam mattress featuring proprietary polyfoams, but it is slightly softer than the Yogabed, coming in at a 6 on the firmness scale. While the Yogabed Mattress and the Tuft & Needle Mint earned very similar marks across our performance categories, our sleep testers gave the Tuft & Needle Mint slightly higher ratings for durability, pressure relief, temperature neutrality, and sex.

The Tuft & Needle Mint uses lower density comfort and transition layers. This lower density coupled with graphite and gel infusions allow the Tuft & Needle Mint to sleep cooler than many all-foam mattresses. Lower density foams also tend to regain their shape more quickly, which may make it easier to change position on the bed.

The Tuft & Needle Mint earned better ratings across virtually all of our weight groups and sleep positions. The Tuft & Needle Mint’s strong rating across weight groups and sleep positions may make it a good choice for sleepers from different weight groups or with different position preferences.

Yogabed vs. Leesa Original

The Leesa Original Mattress is a memory foam model with a medium (5) feel. Our lightweight sleep testers and average-weight side and stomach sleepers preferred this firmness to the medium-firm feel of the Yogabed Mattress.

While the Leesa Mattress and the Yogabed Mattress earned similar ratings in our performance categories, the Leesa had a slight edge for durability, pressure relief, and temperature neutrality.

The Leesa’s comfort layer features foam designed to promote a cooler night’s sleep, so it may be a good option for sleepers who want the hug of memory foam without as much heat retention. Our sleep testers found the softer feel of the mattress provided a good amount of hug and pressure relief, so the Leesa may also appeal to sleepers who suffer from aches and pains.

Yogabed vs. Casper Original

Like the Yogabed Mattress, the Casper Original Mattress is a memory foam model that offers an exceptionally quiet sleep experience. However, differences in construction and firmness lead to some notable variations in performance.

The Casper’s transition layer uses zoned construction, which means some areas are softer and others are firmer. This zoning provides added support under the sleeper’s hips and more softness under their shoulders.

The Casper Mattress has a medium feel, rating around 5 on the firmness scale. Because of its softer feel, our lightweight sleep testers preferred the Casper Mattress. Our average-weight side sleepers felt the Casper offered better contouring, while our average-weight back sleepers felt the Yogabed provided better support. Our heavyweight sleep testers felt both options were too soft, but our heavyweight side sleepers preferred the Casper, while our heavyweight back sleepers favored the Yogabed.

The Casper earned it higher marks for motion isolation and temperature neutrality, while our testers gave the Yogabed a better rating for off-gassing.

Yogabed vs. GravityLux

Produced by WinkBeds, the GravityLux Mattress is a memory foam model that comes in three firmness options: medium-soft (4), medium (5), and firm (7). In all firmness options, the transition layer of the GravityLux Mattress is zoned to provide extra support under the midsection and a softer feel under the shoulders.

Because of these firmness options, the GravityLux earned higher marks from our sleep testers across all weight groups and nearly all sleep positions. The medium-soft version was soft enough to allow our lightweight sleepers to sink in. The medium option provided a balance of contouring and support for our average-weight testers. The firm version of the mattress provided enough support for our heavyweight testers.

Our testers also gave the GravityLux better for durability, motion isolation, pressure relief, temperature neutrality, and sex. However, the Yogabed Mattress is significantly less expensive across mattress sizes, so it may appeal to shoppers on a budget.
