Mike Grillo first dreamed up the idea of designing a weighted blanket in the wake of the 2016 election. Hoping to relieve post-election anxiety, Grillo created a weighted blanket that harnesses the power of deep pressure touch stimulation to calm the nervous system.
Honored as one of 2018’s best inventions by TIME Magazine, the Gravity Blanket was the first weighted blanket to be marketed to the public. Prior to the Gravity Blanket, weighted blankets have been used by the medical community to reduce stress and anxiety in patients suffering from mental disorders like autism and PTSD. These effects are a result of the blanket evenly distributing weight across the body to simulate the feeling of being hugged, thus releasing the sleep-regulating hormone serotonin and decreasing the stress-hormone cortisol.
To give the Gravity Blanket its weight, the blanket is filled with non-toxic glass beads within a pure cotton shell. The shell features gridded stitching to keep the pellets evenly distributed as you sleep. Every blanket comes with a velboa plush duvet cover that is removable and machine washable. The soft duvet attaches to the inner weighted blanket with internal clasps to hold everything in place.
The Gravity Blanket is designed for one person, measuring at 72″ x 48″ and coming in a choice of 15 pounds, 20 pounds, or 25 pounds. Gravity also makes their most popular blanket in a Queen/King size that is 35 pounds and perfect for couples. For best results, sleepers should choose a size that is around 10 percent of their body weight. The original blanket also features a choice of two colors: “Space Grey” or “Galaxy Blue”. Recently, the company released a cooling version of the original blanket which includes a special, moisture-wicking duvet designed with hot sleepers in mind.

Weighted Blankets are filled with tons of small weighted beads surrounded by polyester padding/filling. These beads are of varying quality, usually made of plastic, glass, or nano-ceramic.
The inner micro glass beads are high quality, hypoallergenic, and eco-friendly. That said, our testers found the inner blanket to pool towards the side of the blanket, suggesting mediocre inner fastenings.

Durability
x
How long the weighted blanket lasts with proper care. The average weighted blanket lasts for around 4 years.
We’ve heard a few reports describing the gridded stitches on the inner cotton weighted insert starting to come apart. This allows beads to pool on one side of the blanket rather than remain evenly distributed throughout. However, this doesn’t seem to be a common experience.

In summary, our testers appreciated the Gravity Blanket for its quality, hypoallergenic, and eco-friendly glass bead fill, in addition to the plush, warmth provided by the removable microfiber duvet.
However, the microfiber also tends to trap heat and is not recommended for users that sleep hot. If you tend to overheat at night, we recommend using the cotton insert without the duvet to allow for better breathability.
