Quick Summary

Quick Summary

U.S.-based home goods retailer The Citizenry sells sustainable, globally produced home goods almost exclusively online. The brand specializes in fair-trade textiles, working directly with artisans worldwide. Each item is handcrafted in small batches, hand numbered, and available only in limited quantities. In addition to sheets, The Citizenry’s product line includes furniture, throws, rugs, and other fair-trade home goods.

The Citizenry has a single stonewashed linen line of sheets. Sheets, pillowcases, and Euro shams are made from machine-washable French flax linen. Each sheet set includes one flat sheet, one fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. The fitted sheet can fit mattresses up to 15” deep.

Colors are neutral tones, typically solids ranging from charcoal to blush. Sheet sets are available in full, queen, and king sizes. Full and queen sheet sets come with standard pillowcases and king sheet sets include king-size pillowcases.

However, sustainability and luxury do not come cheap. The Citizenry’s sheet sets carry an above-average price point. But the sheets have an excellent durability rating, so they could be a wise investment.

All of The Citizenry’s textile products, including sheet sets, are Oeko-Tex certified, which means they’re free of harmful substances. The Citizenry has a commitment to produce goods sustainably with fair wages and working environments. The linen is sourced from France and woven in Portugal by a family-run mill.

The Citizenry sheets are excellent for durability and temperature regulation. Made of stonewashed linen, this type of fabric is known to be breathable, moisture wicking, and resilient. The durability is due to the French flax used to create the sheets, which is known to produce longer fibers for a stronger fabric. However, as is typical of linen sheets, they can wrinkle easily.

These sheets are machine washable and may shed lightly during the first two washings. Although they may be initially a bit course, they’ll soften quickly with washing and use. With 15” pockets, you shouldn’t have a problem fitting the sheets on your mattress.

Product Name Material Weave Bundle Options Colors/Patterns Available
Stone Washed Linen Sheets 100% French Flax Linen Linen 4-piece set with additional pillowcases and shams sold separately 8 color options available

The Citizenry’s sheets are 100% French flax linen, which is stone washed. Stone washing is a garment wash process using stones to loosen the weave of the fabric, which gives it softness and a lived-in look. The sheets are available in eight different neutral-toned colors, including a graphite stripe pattern. The sheet bundle comes in a four-piece set with a flat sheet, fitted sheet, and two pillowcases. If you need additional pillowcases or shams, you can purchase those separately.

Cleaning

The Citizenry’s linen sheets are machine washable. Gentle cycle with like colors and a mild liquid laundry detergent is recommended. Bleach is not recommended, as it can weaken linen fibers. Laundry additives such as color brighteners should also be avoided, as they may cause colors to fade over time. Tumble dry on low and use your dryer’s wrinkle release setting, then remove promptly to minimize wrinkling. Wool dryer balls are recommended for fluffiness instead of dryer sheets.

Note the material will shed on the first few washes, as linen is a natural fiber. Ironing linen is not necessary, but if you prefer to iron your sheets, you can do so on your iron’s warm or linen setting. Do not use a hot iron, which can cause linen fibers to shrink together and break. Stains should be treated right away.
