Boll & Branch Pillow Reviews

Boll & Branch Pillow Reviews

The Bottom Line.

  • The Boll & Branch Down Pillow uses responsibly sourced, triple-washed down, making it hypoallergenic.
  • Finished with an organic cotton cover, both pillows blend support with softness.
  • For the allergy-prone, the Down Alternative Pillow uses a PrimaLoft fiber fill, which gives a plush cushioning very similar to down.

Quick Summary

Quick Summary

Scott and Missy Tannen founded Boll & Branch in 2014. Their goal was to offer bedroom and bathroom products that were not only high-quality, but also organic and free of chemicals. Boll & Branch offers mattresses, blankets, throws, and towels. The company began offering pillows for sale in 2018. Boll & Branch has two distinct pillow options: down and down alternative.

The down pillow has a fill power between 600 and 700. The filling is made of ethically sourced down collected at farms in Indiana. Although the United States government requires down to be washed twice, Boll & Branch triple-washes its down to remove as many allergens as possible. Although the original down pillow is technically hypoallergenic, Boll & Branch opted to provide a down alternative for allergy-prone customers. The brand’s down alternative pillows are filled with Primaloft, a synthetic microfiber that was originally designed and tested to be safely used by the U.S. Army.

Both versions of Boll & Branch’s pillows are available in soft and medium firm options as well as standard and king-sizes. They’re encased in a 100 percent organic cotton shell. The pillows are plush, airy, and conform easily to the head and neck area. Although soft, the firmer pillow option offers just the right amount of support to align the spine and prevent sleepers from waking up feeling stiff or sore. Boll & Branch pillows are GOTS (or Global Organic Textile Standard) certified.

Construction and Firmness

Boll & Branch pillows are filled with down, which is the soft, white, fluffy undercoat that belongs to waterfowl such as ducks or geese. The brand’s down comes from duck farms in Indiana who take an ethical, cruelty-free approach to gathering down and feathers for use in pillows. The down gets washed three times, one more wash than required by the government, to make sure that the material is allergen-free. Boll & Branch Down Pillows have a fill power between 600 and 700.

The down version of Boll & Branch’s pillow uses a three-chamber system to provide just the right amount of softness and support depending on your chosen firmness option. For example, the middle chamber in a  “Soft” down pillow is filled with pure white down. However, the “Medium-Firm” version has a middle chamber stuffed with a combination of down and feathers. The feathers offer a greater level of support without sacrificing the pillow’s overall plush nature.

Rather than assume its down is hypoallergenic, Boll & Branch offers a down alternative pillow, allowing allergy-prone sleepers to have a worry-free option available. This pillow is filled with 100 percent Primaloft, a super thin microfiber that was originally developed for the U.S. ARMY. The substance is environmentally friendly, lightweight, and water-resistant, making it a great stand-in for authentic down.

Boll & Branch’s down and down alternative pillows are surrounded by a 100 percent organic cotton casing. The company’s cotton is Organic Fair Trade certified.
