How Is the Nolah Signature Mattress Constructed?

The Nolah Signature’s cover is made of unbleached organic cotton to help dissipate body heat and moisture while you sleep. This is a helpful feature on a foam mattress, because foam tends to trap more body heat than other mattress materials.
Comfort Layers
The Signature 12 features two comfort layers. The top layer consists of proprietary AirFoam. This layer measures 2.5 inches thick and provides close, even body-contouring without the deep “hugging” sensation of memory foam. The second comfort layer, which measures 1.5 inches thick, is composed of high-resilience polyfoam. This material provides additional cushioning while supporting the sleeper’s body.
Transition Layer
The Signature’s transitional layer is also constructed from AirFoam, but this layer has a denser composition in order to reinforce the sleep surface and prevent people from sinking excessively.
Support Layers
The support core is made of high-density polyfoam. This material is quite firm and capable of stabilizing the mattress, though it won’t provide the same level of reinforcement as springs.
Mattress Height
The Nolah Signature’s layers add up to a mattress that’s 12 inches tall, putting it in the high-profile category. The height is in part due to the 7-inch layer of HD support foam as well as the deep comfort system.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?
The Nolah Signature Mattress has a medium (5) feel, making it a good middle-of-the-road option for people seeking a balance of contouring and support. The foam conforms closely but shouldn’t sink too much for people who weigh up to 230 pounds, especially if they sleep on their sides or backs.
Originally, the Signature was a flippable mattress with a medium soft (4) surface on one side and a firm (7) surface on the other. This version is no longer available.

Performance Ratings
Durability
We rate the Signature’s durability as good. Nolah hasn’t been in business long enough to evaluate the long-term durability of their mattresses just yet. So, we’ve based our current durability rating on the materials in the mattress and quality of construction. What makes the Signature stand out for durability is that all four of its polyfoam layers are fairly dense, making the mattress more durable than models that rely on lower-density materials.
Most foam mattresses have a practical lifespan of 6 to 7 years, especially for lightweight sleepers who are less likely to create permanent body impressions in the foam over time. However, unlike the Signature, most all-foam mattresses use lower-density foam in their comfort layers and save the more durable HD foam for their support and transition layers.
Motion Isolation
The Nolah Signature Mattress provides excellent motion isolation, with virtually no transfer of movement from one side of the mattress to the other. To determine this, we had two of our testers rest on the Signature at the same time. One moved around while the other stayed alert for any sense of movement traveling across the surface of the mattress. Our external testers reported similar results with the Nolah Signature at home with their partners.
Off-Gassing
Our team found that there was some noticeable off-gassing from the Signature when they unboxed it. This is typical for foam mattresses, and the odor did diminish over time. Airing the mattress out in a room with good ventilation can help remove the “new mattress smell” more quickly.
It’s worth noting that although the mattress had some odor fresh from the factory, the Signature’s foam materials are all CertiPUR-US certified to be free of hazardous chemicals like flame retardants and formaldehyde.
Pressure Relief
We used 2D and 3D sensory mapping technology to measure the Signature’s pressure relief for each sleep tester. To do this, our testers rested on a sensory pad atop the mattress that monitored pressure build-up. By doing this, we could get a picture of how much pressure the mattress relieved, especially for contact points like the shoulders and hips.
The Signature delivered excellent pressure relief for our side and back sleepers who weigh 230 pounds or less. Those who weigh more – stomach sleepers in particular – found the mattress a bit too soft to alleviate pressure.
Temperature Neutrality
Foam mattresses tend to trap body heat, especially thicker foam comfort layers that let sleepers sink in. That was the case for the Signature. Our testers found that the mattress trapped some warmth, but the AirFoam’s open-cell composition prevented excessive heat retention compared to memory foam. The Signature’s cotton cover is also quite breathable, and the fabric has moisture-wicking properties.
Edge Support
To gauge the Signature’s edge support, each of our sleep testers took turns sitting on the mattress edge, like they would if they were getting in or out of bed. The Signature’s edge sank markedly beneath each tester during the sit test.
The other edge support test involved our testers sleeping close to the mattress edge. All three said they felt like there was enough support along the edges. However, our heavy weight tester reported feeling a slight “roll-off” sensation due to the edge compressing.
Noise
The Signature is an all-foam mattress, so there are no innersprings, air channels or adjustable mechanisms to generate noise. The result is a silent mattress that won’t disturb sleepers with creaking noises as they or their partners move while asleep.
Sex
The Signature has a thick comfort layer that lets sleepers sink into the surface, and the four-layer foam construction isolates motion. It also makes the Signature very unresponsive to movement, so it doesn’t have a lot of bounce.
On the other hand, the Signature’s foam comfort layers offer more traction than a typical innerspring mattress. And the Signature is very quiet, a plus for couples who share a house (or an apartment wall) with others and want to be discreet.
Sleeper Ratings
Now, let’s discuss our sleeper ratings for the Nolah Signature 12 Mattress.
The ideal firmness and thickness settings for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, the team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.
Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.
The Signature ranks very well for lightweight sleepers, with very good pressure relief and spinal alignment for side, back, and stomach sleepers. Sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds generally prefer softer surfaces.
Many lightweight sleepers prefer a soft, highly conforming mattress for proper pressure relief. This was the case for our testers who weigh less than 130 pounds, who received plenty of cushioning from the Nolah Signature but didn’t sink excessively around the midsection.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs
The mattress rates as a very good option for sleepers in the average weight range, especially side sleepers. Our average weight testers appreciated the Signature’s balanced medium feel. This feedback aligns with the preferences of most average weight sleepers. People in this weight range typically sleep best on a medium to medium firm surface that balances support with pressure relief.
Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.
Our sleep testers who weigh more than 230 pounds didn’t feel as comfortable on the Signature as their lighter counterparts. This was particularly true for back and stomach sleepers in this weight range. The mattress is constructed with dense foam layers that provide decent reinforcement, but not quite enough to prevent sinkage for heavier individuals. Sleepers who fall into this category may want to consider a firmer, more supportive mattress.

How Does the Nolah Signature Mattress Compare to Other Beds?
Comparison shopping is the key to finding the best mattress for your needs. Here’s how the Nolah Signature Mattress fares against the Nolah Original Mattress and some similar mattresses from competitors.
Nolah Signature vs. Nolah Original
The Nolah Original is a 10-inch height mattress with a 7-inch HD polyfoam support core beneath two polyfoam comfort layers, topped with a viscose cover. Both of Nolah’s mattress models are made with the company’s proprietary AirFoam, a memory foam alternative designed to relieve pressure points and avoid trapping heat the way memory foam mattresses can. Both the Nolah Original Mattress and the Signature are very quiet, with very good motion isolation, which makes them ideal for couples who don’t want to disturb each other during sleep.
In terms of firmness, the Original – like the Signature – ranks as a medium. Both performed well for lightweight and average weight sleepers, especially those who sleep on their side or back. The Original may be a better choice for sleepers on a budget because it’s priced several hundred dollars lower than the luxury Signature.

Nolah Signature vs. The Casper
The Casper Mattress, like the Nolah Signature, is a foam mattress that delivers good support and pressure relief for lightweight and average weight side sleepers. Both are high-profile, 12-inch tall mattresses. The Casper’s construction includes a 7.5-inch HD polyfoam support core topped by a polyfoam transitional layer, a memory foam comfort layer and an upper 1.5-inch polyfoam comfort layer, wrapped in a polyester and spandex cover.
Both models are extremely quiet and isolate motion well, thanks to their all-foam construction. The Casper’s firmness rating of 5 places is on par with the Signature’s.
The Casper is not a bargain option, but the Nolah Signature still carries a higher price point, in part because of the materials used in its construction. For example, the Nolah Signature’s cover is made of unbleached organic cotton fabric, while the Casper’s cover is polyester. However, White Glove delivery is an option for the Casper, while the Signature is only shipped via UPS for customers to unbox.
One area where Casper has a clear advantage is shipping to Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. The Nolah Signature doesn’t ship to those locations.

Nolah Signature vs. Loom & Leaf
The Loom & Leaf Mattress and the Nolah Signature are both premium, high-profile foam-construction mattresses with organic cotton covers, yet there are some key differences. The Loom & Leaf incorporates a thin foam layer into its quilted organic cotton cover. The Loom & Leaf’s two comfort layers are made of memory foam rather than polyfoam like the Signature, and the Loom & Leaf’s support core has two HD polyfoam layers, compared to the Signature’s one.
While the Nolah Signature has a medium (5) feel, the Loom & Leaf’s firmness choice is made at checkout. Buyers must choose either the Loom & Leaf in Relaxed Medium (5.5 firmness) or Firm (8 firmness) model. This selection will likely appeal to anyone who considers a medium feel too soft.
Like the Nolah Signature, the Loom & Leaf’s foam layers result in very good motion isolation, quietness and pressure relief for sleepers, especially lightweight and average sleepers. However, the Loom & Leaf outperforms the Signature for heavyweight side sleeper support.

Nolah Signature vs. GravityLux
The GravityLux Mattress is another premium foam mattress with multiple firmness options. It has a quilted, gel-infused polyfoam filled Tencel cover over an open-cell memory foam comfort layer, a polyfoam transitional layer that’s zoned for firmer support under the back and hips, and a HD polyfoam support core.
Like the Nolah Signature, it performs well in terms of pressure relief, motion isolation and noise. Both mattresses perform well for lightweight and average sleepers, but the GravityLux rates better for heavyweight side and back sleepers using the firmest of the mattress’ three options. While the Signature has a fixed medium feel, GravityLux offers medium soft, medium, and firm options at checkout.
Both mattresses come with a 120-night trial period that includes a mandatory 30-night break-in period during. And while both companies offer a lifetime warranty on these mattresses, the Signature warranty is pro-rated, while the GravityLux warranty is not. Both mattresses ship for free in a box, but GravityLux also offers White Glove Delivery of an uncompressed mattress for an additional fee. Nolah Signature vs. Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress
The Mint Mattress from Tuft & Needle is one of the best values among foam mattresses. This mattress features a gel- and graphite-infused polyfoam comfort layer over a polyfoam transitional layer infused with ceramic gel beads and a high density polyfoam support core. The Mint Mattress and the Nolah Signature both provide very good pressure relief for lightweight and average sleepers, and both are quiet mattresses that isolate motion so couples can sleep undisturbed.
One clear area of difference is price. The Mint lists for several hundred dollars less than the luxury Nolah Signature. Both mattresses are shipped ground for free in the contiguous US. Only the Mint is available for shipping to Alaska and Hawaii for an additional charge. White Glove Delivery and old mattress removal are available for a fee with the Mint Mattress, but not for the Nolah Signature.

Nolah Signature vs. Bear Original
The Bear Original, like the Nolah Signature, has all-foam construction for optimal pressure relief, quietness and motion isolation. The Bear has a comfort layer of gel-infused graphite memory foam over a polyfoam transition layer atop a high-density polyfoam support core. Both mattresses perform well for average weight sleepers, although the Nolah Signature is rated better for lightweight sleepers.
However, the Bear Mattress has a unique feature that may make it a better choice for athletes and people who normally sleep hot on a foam mattress. The Bear’s cover is made of Celliant, a patented fabric (and FDA-determined medical device). Celliant uses embedded minerals to absorb sleepers’ body heat and reflect it back to them as easily absorbable infrared energy for better workout recovery.
The Bear Mattress costs much less than the Nolah Signature. However, its warranty period is ten years, while the Signature carries a lifetime warranty.

Full Delivery Policy
Nolah mattresses are shipped free via UPS and arrive within 10 days of order. (All Nolah mattresses are made to order, which takes 3-5 days.) Customers can’t pre-select their delivery date, but they can make delivery requests on their order form.
Returns are free. Nolah will send a driver to remove the mattress and donate it to a local charity or take it to a recycling center.

Trial Period and Warranty Details
Trial Period and Guarantee
Nolah’s 120-night trial allows customers to fully try out the mattress before committing to it. The trial period includes a 30-night break-in period, during which the mattress can’t be returned. After the first 30 nights, customers have until the 120th night to make a return.
The Nolah Signature Mattress has a limited lifetime warranty. The warranty is valid only for the original buyer of the mattress and guarantees that if the mattress is defective, Nolah will repair or replace it, under these terms:
- Nolah will cover all repair, replacement and shipping costs if the mattress is found to be defective during the first 15 years.
- After 15 years, Nolah will either repair the mattress with the owner paying a handling cost, or the company will replace the mattress at a prorated price plus $75 shipping.
- The owner will pay 50 % of the original price if the mattress is replaced by Nolah between years 15 and 25.
- After year 25, the owner will pay 60% of the original price if Nolah replaces the mattress due to defects.
