Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Review

Written by Tuck Staff

Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The Beautyrest Hybrid provides ideal support for back sleepers through its pocketed coils and polyfoam layers.
  • Airflow through the coil layer maintains temperature neutrality.
  • Gel memory foam comfort layers help relieve pressure on your joints as you sleep.

Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Overview

Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Overview

The Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress is one of two direct-to-consumer mattress offerings from Simmons Bedding Co., with the other being the Beautyrest Black. Simmons was founded in 1871, launched their Beautyrest mattress line back in 1925, and began selling mattresses online in 2019. Their mattresses are also sold in mattress stores across the U.S.

The Beautyrest Hybrid has an above-average profile of 13.5 inches and contains memory foam and poly foam comfort layers over a pocketed coil support core that’s reinforced with a high-density polyfoam encasement. Rating medium-firm, or 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, the Beautyrest Hybrid appeals to a wide range of sleepers in terms of bodyweight and sleep position preferences.

Our Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress review guides you through the process of determining if this mattress is a good fit for you. We cover construction, feel, pricing, similar mattresses, and provide information on relevant sleep trial and warranty information.

  • Average weight sleepers. The Beautyrest Hybrid provides a mix of support and contouring appropriate for average weight sleepers regardless of preferred sleep position.
  • Back sleepers of all weights. Our testing found the Beautyrest Hybrid provides adequate lumbar support for back sleepers regardless of weight.
  • Budget-conscious shoppers. The Beautyrest Hybrid comes at a lower price-point than many hybrid mattresses of comparable quality.

Not Recommended for...

  • Lightweight side and stomach sleepers. Sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds and sleep on their side or stomach are most likely to find  the Beautyrest Hybrid too firm.
  • Light sleepers who share a bed. Sleepers who awaken easily might find noise or motion transfer from their partner’s movements to be bothersome.

Video Review

Our review of the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress contains all of the information you need to understand the mattress’s construction and performance. We know some people would rather watch a video explaining details about the Beautyrest Hybrid, however, so we made one to show you the mattress in action.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

In addition to being a very good choice for back sleepers, the Beautyrest Hybrid also excels when it comes to edge support and pressure relief. Keep reading below to learn how we determined the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress ratings.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

How Is the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress is covered in a stretchy knit fabric that is cool to the touch and part of a system Simmons calls InfiniCool Plus, which is intended to promote airflow and cool the top of the mattress.

Comfort Layers

Three layers combine to form the comfort system in the Beautyrest Hybrid: a 1-inch gel memory foam layer, a 2-inch gel memory foam layer, and a 1-inch medium polyfoam layer. These layers provide pressure relief, forming a cradle for the sleeper. The thick memory foam layers also serve to isolate motion. However, this mattress does not provide the traditional memory foam “hugging” sensation, despite its construction.

Support Layers

A 9.5 inch layer of pocketed coils surrounded by a high-density polyfoam encasement makes up the support core of the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress. Since airflow occurs easily through pocketed coils, this support core contributes to the bed’s favorable temperature neutrality rating. The Beautyrest Hybrid’s support core also majorly contributes to the adequate lumbar support experienced by our back sleep testers of all weights.

Because of its coil layer, the Beautyrest Hybrid earned a good, rather than great, rating for motion isolation. Motion transfer is more common in hybrid mattresses than in all-foam beds due to the presence of coils. Unlike innersprings, however, pocketed coils can be depressed individually, so hybrid mattresses transfer less motion than innerspring mattresses.

Mattress Height

At 13.5 inches thick, the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress has an above-average profile. This space allows room for three foam comfort layers and a pocketed coil support layer.

Since the Beautyrest Hybrid has a taller profile, customers who opt for this mattress may need to buy deep-pocket sheets to fit it.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

Our testing found the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress to fall at a 6.5 out of 10, or medium-firm, on the firmness scale. This mattress is only available in one firmness level.

As a hybrid mattress, the Beautyrest Hybrid contains memory foam and polyfoam comfort layers over a pocketed coil support layer reinforced by a high-density foam encasement. The comfort layers provide pressure relief and some contouring to the body. The Beautyrest Hybrid doesn’t offer that traditional memory foam feeling of sinking in and being “hugged” by the mattress. Instead, it provides a balance of sleeping in and sleeping on the bed, with heavier sleepers sinking in deeper while lightweight sleepers float more on top.

The firm pocketed coils of the Beautyrest Hybrid provide support without creating discomfort for most sleepers. Back sleepers felt particularly supported by the Beautyrest Hybrid, regardless of their weight.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Now, let’s look at our performance ratings for the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our in-house testing crew, feedback from external sleep testers, and verified owner experiences.

Durability

Beautyrest mattresses have been around since 1925, and positive customer reviews provide evidence of their durability. The Beautyrest Hybrid is likely to last as long as an average mattress due to its construction and high-quality materials. Generally, hybrid mattresses last longer than all-foam beds. Customers should expect the Beautyrest Hybrid to last for many years.

The memory foam layers of the Beautyrest Hybrid might develop minor body impressions over time from regular use. Rotating the mattress heat-to-foot every 3-6 months can prolong the lifespan of the foam and prevent deep indentations from forming.

Motion Isolation

In our testing, the Beautyrest Hybrid was good, but not great, when it came to motion isolation. The thick comfort layers absorb some motion, but the tightly sewn cover had a tendency to pull with each movement. When lying on the bed, our testers could feel some movement from another person moving around next to them. This motion transfer might not bother the average sleeper, but more sensitive sleepers should be aware of it.

Hybrid mattresses generally do not isolate motion as well as all-foam mattresses due to their coil layer. Pocketed coils operate independently of one another, so they transfer less motion compared to innerspring mattresses, in which the coils are all connected.

Off-Gassing

We smelled an odor upon opening the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress. Off-gassing occurs when materials in the memory foam and polyfoam layers degrade and release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the air. The odor dissipated within a few hours and was completely gone a day or two after unboxing the mattress. Airflow through the coil layers allow the odor to dissipate more quickly than it would from an all-foam mattress.

Most people won’t be bothered by the off-gassing from the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress. People who are sensitive to smells might find the off-gassing bothersome, however.

Pressure Relief

To evaluate pressure relief, we had our testers of each weight lie on the mattress in different positions on top of a sensory pad that measures pressure build-up. Our pressure mapping tool showed that overall, the Beautyrest Hybrid provides adequate pressure relief to most sleepers. Specifically, back sleepers of all weights found this mattress to provide a nice combination of support and pressure relief.

Average- and heavyweight side sleepers also enjoyed pressure relief and spinal alignment while lying on the Beautyrest Hybrid. Lightweight side sleepers experienced some pressure build-up, however, especially when laying on their sides. Lighter weight sleepers tend to prefer plusher mattresses that conform more closely to the body to help alleviate pressure points.

Temperature Neutrality

Although the Beautyrest Hybrid contains memory foam layers, which are known for trapping heat, it does a very good job of staying temperature neutral. The pocketed coil layer of this hybrid mattress allows for airflow that keeps the mattress cooler than all-foam mattresses.

The memory foam layers are infused with gel, which is intended to help people sleep cooler. Also, the cover contains fabric layered in a way purposely designed to promote airflow.

Edge Support

We asked testers of multiple weights to sit on and lie near the edge of the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress to evaluate its edge support. The edge did not buckle or fold underneath any of our testers, and they all felt secure when lying near the edge. Hybrid mattresses generally have better edge support than all-foam mattresses due to the firmness of the coil layer. The Beautyrest Hybrid performs particularly well in this category due to the high-density foam encasement around the coil support layer, which reinforces the edges and prevents sagging.

The Beautyrest Hybrid’s edge support allows sleepers to use the entire sleep surface, which can be helpful for those who share a bed. Strong edge support, combined with the bed’s responsiveness, also makes it easier for people to get in and out of bed.

Noise

Our testers found that the Beautyrest Hybrid is quiet, but it is not a silent mattress. Putting weight on the mattress results in light sound. Hybrid mattresses tend to make more noise than all-foam mattresses due to their coil layer, which can squeak and creak as the mattress ages. However, the bed’s thick foam layers do help muffle the noise.

The light creaks occasionally heard from the Beautyrest Hybrid as a result of weight and movement on the mattress will not bother most sleepers. Extremely sensitive sleepers, however, might prefer to opt for a silent, all-foam mattress.

Sex

The Beautyrest Hybrid rates excellent for sex because of its strong edge support and responsiveness. Although the mattress conforms to the body to some extent, it responds, or springs back, quickly enough that the conforming properties do not get in the way of movement on the bed. Highly conforming mattresses can make movement such as changing positions difficult, but that isn’t a problem with the Beautyrest Hybrid.

Strong edge support is also advantageous when it comes to sex. The strong edge support of the Beautyrest Hybrid helps protect people from slipping off the edge of the bed since the edges are not likely to fold or buckle. Although the Beautyrest Hybrid is not likely to make loud noises during sex, customers should be aware that it won’t be silent.

Sleeper Ratings

Next, let’s discuss our sleeper ratings for the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress.

There is no ideal mattress firmness and thickness since people’s preferences vary depending on their body weight, shape, and preferred sleeping position. In order to provide ratings that are useful for a diverse audience, our team evaluated the Beautyrest Hybrid with sleep testers of different body weights and preferred sleep positions.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Like back sleepers of all weights, lightweight back sleepers found the Beautyrest Hybrid provides adequate lumbar support to keep them comfortable throughout the night. The mix of support and pressure relief makes the Beautyrest Hybrid earn high ratings from this group.

Lightweight side and stomach sleepers, however, did not enjoy the Beautyrest hybrid as much. While it provided both support and pressure relief, the mattress felt too firm to these groups, with some of our testers experiencing pressure points in areas like the hips and shoulders. Lightweight side and stomach sleepers might want to opt for a softer mattress, unless they specifically prefer firm mattresses.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Of testers in all weight groups, average weight sleepers enjoyed the Beautyrest Hybrid the most. Regardless of if they slept on their backs, stomachs, sides, or a combination of positions, our average weight sleepers found this mattress meets their needs and provides a nice mix of support and pressure relief. Side sleepers in this group found the mattress promoted spinal alignment that kept them comfortable throughout the night.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Heavyweight sleep testers who prefer sleeping on their backs and sides rated the Beautyrest Hybrid highly. Back sleepers in this group received adequate lumbar support while still enjoying pressure relief from the conforming memory foam comfort layers.

Like average weight side sleepers, heavyweight side sleepers experienced spinal alignment while lying on their sides.

How Does the Beautyrest Hybrid Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

In this section, we compare the Beautyrest Hybrid with other similar mattresses. These comparisons help readers understand the differences between specific mattresses so they can determine which mattress is best for them personally.

Beautyrest Hybrid vs. Beautyrest Black

Like the Beautyrest Hybrid, the Beautyrest Black is a hybrid mattress sold online by the Simmons company. At 13.5 and 13 inches respectively, both mattresses are slightly high profile and as a result, require deep pocket sheets. The Beautyrest Black is a luxury mattress constructed with high-quality materials, so it costs a few hundred dollars more than the Beautyrest Hybrid at every size.

The Beautyrest Black is firmer than the Beautyrest Hybrid, rating 7.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and offering very little contouring. Consequently, lightweight side and back sleepers experienced more pressure build-up with the Beautyrest Black than the Beautyrest Hybrid. However, light sleepers who share a bed should note that the Beautyrest Black performed much better in terms of noise, earning an excellent rating.

Beautyrest Hybrid vs. Brooklyn Bedding Signature

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is another affordably priced, hybrid mattress sold online. Unlike the Beautyrest Hybrid, which is only available in one firmness level, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature comes in soft (3.5), medium (5.5), and firm (7.5) options. The medium is most similar to the Beautyrest Hybrid. Lightweight sleepers who find the Beautyrest Hybrid to be too firm might prefer the Brooklyn Bedding Signature in soft or medium, whereas those who prefer a slightly firmer mattress may prefer the firm option.

Although the two mattresses rated very similarly across multiple criteria, the Brooklyn Bedding Signature did earn higher scores for noise and off-gassing. The Brooklyn Bedding Signature makes a better option for sleepers who are more sensitive to sounds and smells.

Beautyrest Hybrid vs. DreamCloud

The DreamCloud Mattress is another direct-to-consumer hybrid mattress that also rates 6.5, or medium-firm, on the 1-10 firmness rating scale. Despite sharing a firmness level, our lightweight sleepers of all sleep positions (side, back, stomach) preferred the feel of the Beautyrest Hybrid.

Like the Beautyrest Hybrid, the DreamCloud rated highly with average- and heavyweight back sleepers. Both mattresses provide robust lumbar support, strong edge support, and the responsiveness that most couples prefer for sex. Neither mattress provides the characteristic “hugging” feeling of memory foam. The Beautyrest Hybrid is slightly more conforming, and our sleep testers found it provides better pressure relief than the DreamCloud.

Beautyrest Hybrid vs. Allswell Luxe Hybrid

Another hybrid mattress, the Allswell Luxe Hybrid also rates 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. It contains copper-infused memory foam and polyfoam layers over an 8” pocketed coil support core. The Allswell Luxe Hybrid is not as good of an option for lightweight sleepers and can cause pressure build-up and discomfort, especially for those who sleep on their side. Heavyweight sleepers, as well as average weight back sleepers, will likely find the Allswell Luxe Hybrid an attractive choice, however.

Both beds offer strong edge support and the responsiveness most folks prefer for sex. Although the two mattresses share many similarities, the Allswell Luxe Hybrid feels more responsive and provides less pressure relief and motion isolation than the Beautyrest Hybrid.

Beautyrest Hybrid vs. Saatva

The Saatva Mattress is a luxury innerspring mattress rather than a hybrid. The Saatva feels quite different than the Beautyrest Hybrid and comes in multiple options. While the Beautyrest Hybrid rates a medium-firm, or 6.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, the Saatva is available in medium-soft (4), medium-firm (6), and firm (7.5). The Saatva could be a good choice for sleepers wanting a mattress that is softer or firmer than the Beautyrest Hybrid. The Saatva also comes in two profile options, unlike the Beautyrest Hybrid.

The Saatva Mattress feels more responsive than the Beautyrest Hybrid. Because of its innerspring construction, it is a bouncier mattress, and it works well for people who like to feel like they’re sleeping “on” rather than “in” the mattress. However, its coil-on-coil support system also transfers more motion than the Beautyrest Hybrid, which may be a concern for light sleepers who share a bed.

Beautyrest Hybrid vs. Casper Hybrid

Like the Beautyrest Hybrid, the Casper Hybrid Mattress is a high-profile hybrid mattress. The Casper Hybrid is slightly less firm than the Beautyrest Hybrid, coming in at a 5.5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. Lightweight sleepers who find the Beautyrest Hybrid too firm might prefer the Casper. Heavyweight sleepers who find the Casper too soft might prefer the Beautyrest Hybrid.

The Casper provides more of a conforming feel in which the memory foam layers “hug” the body, providing very good pressure relief as a result. One difference in construction between the two mattresses lies in the Casper’s zoned transitional layer. This layer provides targeted cushioning for areas like the shoulders, while providing support for the hips, where most people carry the majority of their weight.
