The Purple has a medium firmness (6.5) while the Layla is double-sided and offers medium-soft (4) and firm (7.5) options.
Both mattresses sleep relatively cool, with good motion isolation.
The Layla is a good choice for side and back sleepers under 230 lbs, while the Purple works for all sizes and sleeping positions.
Purple vs Layla Mattress Overview
Purple vs Layla Mattress Overview
Founded in 2015, Purple sought to improve on the memory foam mattress with its flagship model, the Purple Mattress. This medium-firm mattress uses the brand’s signature ‘Purple Grid’ comfort layer, made of a buckling-column gel dispersed over an elastic polymer grid, atop its transitional and base polyfoam layers.
This construction offers a unique sleeping experience, as it not only closely conforms to the body and relieves pressure in sensitive areas like the shoulders and lower back, but it also sleeps cooler than most memory foam mattresses.
Launched in 2016, Layla Sleep offers one mattress: the Layla Mattress, a 10-inch thick double-sided memory foam bed with a firm and a medium-soft side.
The mattress features a support core made from 4.5 inches of high-density polyfoam, topped on the medium-soft side by 3 inches of copper-infused memory foam and a 1-inch transitional layer of convoluted polyfoam. The firm side of the mattress is topped with a 1-inch layer of copper-infused memory foam.
The Layla offers better temperature neutrality than many competing all-foam beds due to its layers of copper-infused memory foam. The egg-crate like shape of the convoluted polyfoam transitional layer on the medium-soft side of the mattress also helps to disperse heat and allow air to circulate.
Please note: Purple also offers two additional models, the Purple Hybrid and the Purple Hybrid Premier. This comparison only refers to the original Purple mattress.
Both the Purple and Layla mattresses received high marks from our testers for their comfort and durability. Following is a head-to-head comparison of these two mattresses, looking at their construction, comfort, pricing, and performance. You’ll also find an overview of each company’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.
Specifies how long the product maintains structure, providing comfort and support before it begins to deteriorate. For reference, the average mattress lifespan is 6-8 years.
Durability appears to be on par with other high quality memory foam mattress models and should last at least 6-8 years with regular nighly use.

A measure of how effectively a mattress absorbs motion across its surface, preventing partner disturbance.
The Layla Mattress isolates motion to a significant extent, say owners, and many report fewer nighttime sleep disruptions as a result.

Off-gassing
x
Most new products emit chemical smells after being removed from packaging. Off-gassing odors are considered non-toxic, but can be quite unpleasant nonetheless.
Layla Mattresses really shouldn't emit much odor compared to other all-foam mattresses and our testing shows this to be the case.

Pressure Relief
x
This refers to the degree to which a mattress molds to or cradles the contours of the body. This helps alleviate pressure point pain, especially on the hips and shoulders.
The Layla Mattress conforms closely for added pain and pressure relief, and the copper-infused foam can also improve circulation in sleepers.

Temperature Neutrality
x
The temperature of a mattress throughout the night is affected by how much body heat is retained. Several factors affect temperature neutrality, including material composition, layer thickness, and dissipation of heat through airflow.
Given the higher quality foams used, the Layla mattress can trap heat but no more than your average memory foam bed

Edge Support
x
The degree to which the perimeter of the mattress supports body weight. In some cases, mattresses may sink when weight is applied. This sinkage, often called “roll-off”, affects how closely you might sleep to the edge of the bed.
Edge support is a common issue with memory foam mattresses, buyers should expect some sinkage around the perimeter of the bed where people tend to sit.

Noise
x
Certain mattresses – particularly those with coils – can be quite noisy when bearing weight. Others are nearly silent. Material composition is often the limiting factor for noise potential.
The Layla Mattress is virtually silent when bearing weight.

Sex
x
Mattresses that are bouncier and more responsive tend to be better for sex, as they’re easier to change positions on. In contrast, unresponsive mattresses can cause couples to have trouble switching positions.
Like most memory foam models, the Layla Mattress is not particularly bouncy, and may not be responsive enough for some couples.

Sleep Position Ratings
Purple Mattress
Our testers found that the Purple mattress is a good choice for people who sleep on their back, regardless of their weight. Our lightweight testers found the mattress comfortable across all sleeping positions (side, back, and stomach).
Heavyweight sleepers, on the other hand, found that the mattress did not offer consistent enough support to sleep on their side or stomach without experiencing sagging that lead to pressure build-up around the hips and aches in the shoulders and neck.
Layla Mattress
The Layla mattress is a good option for back sleepers of lighter or average weight. Our average-weight testers who prefer to sleep on their side also found that the Layla offered an adequate balance of pressure relief and support.
However, the mattress isn’t ideal for those who weigh more than 230 pounds — regardless of preferred sleep position — as they will likely sink too much, though the firm side received better scores than the medium-soft side. Average and heavyweight stomach sleepers will also most likely find that the Layla doesn’t offer enough support for a comfortable night’s sleep.

How Is the Purple Built?
The Purple Mattress is unique in that it tops two layers of polyfoam with a supportive grid made from elastic polymer reinforced with buckling column gel. This creates a medium-firm (6.5) mattress that closely conforms to the body’s most sensitive pressure points. Although Purple guarantees their mattresses for 10 years, because the company is relatively new, it’s still too soon to determine the long-term durability of the bed.
That being said, we predict that the mattress should hold up for at least seven years with normal usage due to the materials used and the quality of the construction.
Our testers found that the Purple is virtually silent when bearing weight, and offers exceptional motion isolation. It also offers good temperature neutrality, and stays relatively cool throughout the night, especially when compared to memory foam mattresses.
However, the Purple Mattress doesn’t offer much in terms of edge support, leaving heavyweight sleepers feeling at risk for feelings of “roll-off.” The bed’s unique materials also may not offer enough bounce or responsiveness for sex for some couples.
How Is the Layla Mattress Built?
The Layla mattress is 10 inches thick, and offers two sides so sleepers can select the firmness they prefer. The softer side is rated a 4, or medium-soft, while the other side is firmer, and rated a 7.5.
The soft side is constructed with a 3-inch layer of copper-infused memory foam, which allows sleepers to sink deeply into the mattress. This sits on top of a 2-inch transitional layer, which acts as an additional buffer between the sleeper and the support core.
The firm side is constructed with 1 inch of copper-infused memory foam directly on top of the 4.5-inch support core. This results in a more supportive feel for heavier sleepers, but may not provide enough pressure relief for smaller individuals.
Our testers gave the Layla high ratings for durability, pressure relief, off-gassing, motion isolation, and noise. However, like most memory foam mattresses, the mattress does not provide very much edge support, so sinkage will occur when people sit around the perimeter of the bed.
Also typical of memory foam beds, the Layla offers an average amount of temperature neutrality, and may not provide enough bounce or responsiveness for sex for some couples.
