The Best Tempur-Pedic Mattresses for Side Sleepers

Written by Tuck Staff

Quick Overview

Tempur-Pedic is one of the most prominent brand names in the mattress and bedding industry. Founded in 1992, the Swedish company helped popularize the use of memory foam in mattress comfort layers and has partnered with Sealy International since 2012. Tempur-Pedic currently offers 10 individual mattress models that belong to one of three exclusive collections: the Cloud, Contour, and Adapt collections. Most are sold exclusively as all-foam memory foam beds; two of the Adapt models are also sold as memory foam hybrids.

Several performance factors distinguish Tempur-Pedic mattresses. For one, they are highly durable compared to other beds with memory foam layers; most models perform for at least seven years before they need to be replaced. The mattresses also conform closely to alleviate pressure points in sleepers, isolate a significant amount of motion transfer, and produce virtually no noise when bearing weight. Tempur-Pedic offers free White Glove delivery to customers in the contiguous U.S.; this service includes in-home mattress assembly and old mattress removal. In addition to mattresses, the company produces pillows, sheets, and other bedding products.

Read on to learn more about each current Tempur-Pedic model. Below you will find our picks for the top four Tempur-Pedic beds. Our choices are based on verified customer and owner experiences, as well as intensive product research and analysis.

The TEMPUR-ProAdapt is one of the models included in Tempur-Pedic’s Adapt series. This memory foam model is available in three firmness options – ‘Soft’ (3), ‘Medium’ (5), and ‘Firm’ (7). Additionally, it is available as a hybrid mattress with ‘Medium’ firmness. This wide selection of firmness and composition options should accommodate the vast majority of sleepers regardless of their body type or preferred sleep position.

These firmness options offer different benefits for sleepers. The ‘Soft’ and ‘Medium’ all-foam beds feature convoluted polyfoam in the base layer. These models, along with the hybrid design, have strong air flow throughout the support core that helps keep the bed cool. The ‘Firm’ design has a solid foam core, and is particularly suitable to heavier people, as well as back and stomach sleepers. All versions of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt come with a dual-layer cooling cover for added temperature neutrality. They also isolate motion transfer very well and make virtually no noise when bearing weight.

Like other Tempur-Pedic models, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt has an above-average price-point. However, Tempur-Pedic offers Free White Glove delivery throughout the contiguous U.S. The mattress is backed by a 90-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty, as well.

Good for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination)
  • Sleepers in every weight group (light, average, heavy)
  • Back pain sufferers
  • Those who tend to sleep hot

The TEMPUR-Adapt, like the TEMPUR-ProAdapt listed above, is available in all-foam and hybrid designs; both are ‘Medium’ (5). The all-foam model features two memory foam comfort layers and a high-density polyfoam support core. The hybrid also has a dual-layer memory foam comfort system, as well as pocketed coil encased in foam in the support core.

Both TEMPUR-Adapt designs sleep very cool, largely due to a knit cover that absorbs minimal body heat and regulates the bed’s temperature well. Support is another key strength of both TEMPUR-Adapt models – particularly the hybrid version, which reinforces the edges with its foam-encased support core. The thick comfort system also allows the bed to isolate motion transfer to a noticeable extent. The hybrid is also fairly quiet while the all-foam TEMPUR-Adapt is virtually silent. Both of these factors make the bed a good choice for couples who awaken easily due to movement and/or noise.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses are relatively expensive compared to other foam and hybrid models. The TEMPUR-Adapt is priced lower than most of the brand’s other models.

Good for:

  • Side and back sleepers
  • Sleepers in the light and average weight groups
  • Couples
  • Those who tend to sleep hot

Regularly touted as a luxury mattress that’s worth even more than its asking price, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is part of the Adapt series. Like the TEMPUR-ProAdapt, the LuxeAdapt has firmness options for different sleepers to choose from. However, an extra inch of height is just the first sign that the LuxeAdapt lives up to its name and is significantly more luxurious than the ProAdapt.

Part of the reason for this is the use of Advanced Pressure Relief Plus memory foam for the central layer. Reviewers and our research team were both highly impressed by the profound motion cancellation and the outstandingly comfortable support. (The soft option works best for light weight or average weight sleepers, while the firm option can be used by all sleepers.) The LuxeAdapt also alleviates the heat-retaining nature of some memory foam mattresses by featuring a convenient dual cover system.

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt has a higher price point than many other Tempur-Pedic models at $3,900 for a queen-size. However, the cost is well worth it for sleepers with a higher budget.

Good for:

  • Sleepers in all weight categories
  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination)
  • Couples
  • Those with a higher budget

The TEMPUR-breeze, available at ProBreeze (3° cooler) and LuxeBreeze (8° cooler) price points, is one of Tempur-Pedic’s most unique offerings. In addition to the usual support and comfort of their memory foam, it features a cool-touch dual cover system, phase change material to keep you at the right temperature all night, and a breathable comfort layer. (The LUXEbreeze also offers a premium ventilated memory foam layer.)

Of course, even the coolest of mattresses are of little use if they’re uncomfortable. As side sleepers tend to aggravate pressure points at their hips and shoulders, we chose the TEMPUR-breeze for its movement-isolating, pressure-relieving features. The cooling materials used in its construction are just as supportive as conventional Tempur-Pedic designs while offering premium comfort to sleepers.

The TEMPUR-breeze sits at the higher end of Tempur-Pedic’s mattresses in terms of pricing. However, the 90-night sleep trial allows you to test the mattress at home and discover whether the Breeze is the right choice.

Good for:

  • Sleepers in all weight categories
  • Those who sleep hot
  • Couples
  • Shoppers with a higher budget

The Best Tempur-Pedic Mattresses for Side Sleepers Buying Guide

Tempur-Pedic currently offers a total of seven memory foam and hybrid mattress models. The company’s selection includes multiple firmness, thickness, and support levels in order to accommodate individuals with different sleep positions. Sleeper weight affects individual experiences with different mattresses; someone who weighs less than 130 pounds, for example, will have a different experience on a mattress compared to someone who weighs more than 230 pounds.

Before we compare Tempur-Pedic mattress models, let’s look at some key definitions and considerations for side sleepers.

Types of Side Sleeper Positions

Generally speaking, the term ‘side sleeping’ usually refers to one of four positions:

  • Fetal: Both legs curl at the knees and the back is somewhat hunched to create a ‘curled up look’ similar to babies in the womb.
  • Log: Arms and legs are extended, and the back is straight.
  • Yearner: Arms are stretched out, and back and legs are straight.
  • Sprinter: Arms and back are straight, and one leg is curled at the knee while the other is fully extended.

None of these are technically ‘correct’ or ‘better’ than the others, though positions where the legs fully extend – such as the log and the yearner – minimize the chances of mid-sleep pelvic rotation, which can lead to spinal misalignment (see next section for more information).

Considerations for Side Sleepers

Side sleepers generally feel most comfortable on mattresses that feature the following:

  • Low to Medium Firmness: Side sleepers require enhanced neck and back support for proper spinal alignment. Mattresses that are ‘Medium Firm’ or lower tend to be suitable for most sleepers, whereas mattresses that are too firm do not offer adequate neck and back support.
  • Pressure Relief: Side sleeping creates pressure points in areas along the spine, including the neck, shoulders, lower back, and hips. Mattresses that contour closely and align the spine will help alleviate these pressure points.
  • Mattress Thickness: Thickness is often tied to firmness, since thicker mattresses tend to have more padding layers and, as a result, are less firm than relatively thin mattresses.
  • Pelvic Rotation: Some side sleeping positions can lead to unnatural twisting at the midsection, which results in misalignment between the upper and lower body. This is known as pelvic rotation, and it can lead to unwanted pain and pressure. Some side sleepers remedy pelvic rotation by placing a pillow between their knees or maintaining sleep positions that limit nighttime shifting (such as the ‘log’ position). However, mattresses that offer adequate support and firmness will also minimize the risk of pelvic rotation.
  • Sleeper Weight: People with below-average weights (130 pounds or less) may not weigh enough to experience contouring on exceptionally firm mattresses. Likewise, those with above-average weights (230 pounds or more) may be too heavy for exceptionally soft mattresses; this often results in added pressure and discomfort.

Tempur-Pedic Mattress Construction

Tempur-Pedic does not disclose detailed specifications about any of their mattresses, but their current models share the following basic structure:

  • Memory Foam Comfort Layer: Each Tempur-Pedic model varies in terms of foam thickness and density, but all have at least one layer of memory foam in the comfort system.
  • Varying Support Core: Cloud and Contour mattresses have solid, high-density polyfoam support cores. The Flex Supreme Breeze, a hybrid, has a support core with pocketed coils encased in foam. All three models in the Adapt series are available as all-foam beds with high-density polyfoam cores; the ProAdapt and Adapt are also sold as hybrids, which have foam-encased pocketed coils instead.
  • Varying Cover Composition: Mattresses in the Adapt series have cooling covers. All other Tempur-Pedic mattresses have polyester covers.

Mattress Topper

For sleepers who are interested in adding to their Tempur-Pedic mattress’ comfort, or those who aren’t in the market for a new mattress but want to try out the company’s offerings, the Tempur-Topper Supreme is an excellent choice for a mattress topper.

Three inches of breathable TEMPUR memory foam offer sleepers motion cancellation, soft but stable support, and pressure point relief. The topper comes in a removable, washable, dust mite and allergen-resistant cover, so it’s easy to keep clean and contributes to the overall cleanliness of your bedding. Finally, the $399 price point (for a queen) is competitive both with a new mattress and other toppers on the market.

Conclusion

Individual experience will vary significantly from sleeper to sleeper — and testing out mattresses in person may be the best way to determine which model is best for you and your partner.
