Best TempurPedic Mattresses for Back Sleepers

Written by Tuck Staff

Quick Overview

Tempur-Pedic is a well-regarded brand name within the mattress industry. Established in 1992, this Swedish company helped popularize memory foam beds among sleepers worldwide. More than 11 mattresses are currently available from Tempur-Pedic. The majority of these models are sold as part of three exclusive collections – Cloud, Contour, and Adapt – while the last remaining mattress, the GrandBed, is a standalone luxury model. All Tempur-Pedic mattresses are available as all-foam memory foam beds. Additionally, two models in the Adapt series are also available as memory foam hybrids.

Tempur-Pedic mattresses have several advantages over the brand’s main competitors. The beds are highly durable and have an expected lifespan of at least seven years, outlasting most similarly constructed beds. Tempur-Pedic mattresses also conform to the sleeper’s body to provide even support, improved spinal alignment, and targeted pain and pressure relief. Other advantages include great motion isolation and no noise when bearing weight. Tempur-Pedic offers Free White Glove delivery to customers in the contiguous U.S., as well. However, it should be noted that Tempur-Pedic beds have price-points that are significantly higher than those of the average memory foam bed.

Read on to learn more about each current Tempur-Pedic model. Below you will find our picks for the top four Tempur-Pedic beds. Our choices are based on verified customer and owner experiences, as well as intensive product research and analysis.

Best Overall TEMPUR-ProAdapt

Of Tempur-Pedic’s 11 current models, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt is a standout for several reasons. For one, it offers a wide selection of firmness and design options. The mattress is available as an all-foam mattress with ‘Soft’ (3 on the 1-10 firmness scale), ‘Medium’ (5), or ‘Firm’ settings, making it suitable for back sleepers in any weight group. Additionally, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt is also available as a memory foam hybrid with ‘Medium’ firmness. Both designs offer good body conforming and above-average pressure relief.

Temperature neutrality is another key strength. The all-foam TEMPUR-ProAdapt features a dual-layer cover designed to sleep fairly cool, while the hybrid maintains a comfortable temperature thanks to strong airflow throughout the pocketed coil layer. Both versions of the TEMPUR-ProAdapt also isolate motion very well and produce minimal noise when bearing weight, making the mattress a good pick for couples.

Like other Tempur-Pedic mattresses, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt is fairly expensive compared to other memory foam models – currently $3,599 in a Queen size. However, Tempur-Pedic offers free White Glove delivery throughout the contiguous U.S.; this includes in-home assembly and old mattress removal at no extra charge. The mattress is backed by a 90-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty; both of these offers apply to all Tempur-Pedic models.

Good for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination)
  • Sleepers in every weight group (light, average, heavy)
  • Back pain sufferers
  • Those who tend to sleep hot

Best Value TEMPUR-Adapt

The TEMPUR-Adapt is part of the Adapt series and available in both all-foam and hybrid designs. Both versions of the TEMPUR-Adapt are ‘Medium’ (5) in terms of firmness, making the bed ideal for people who weigh 130 to 230 pounds. The all-foam model features the same dual-layer cooling cover as the TEMPUR-ProAdapt, allowing most sleepers to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the night; the hybrid’s strong air circulation also offers great temperature neutrality.

The TEMPUR-Adapt offers moderate conforming that hugs the body without sinking excessively, offering great relief for sleepers who experience aches and pains in their neck, shoulders, and lower back. The mattress also absorbs and minimizes motion transfer to a significant extent; the all-foam version is virtually silent, while the hybrid produces minimal noise thanks to its pocketed coils (which tend to be much quieter than other spring types).

The TEMPUR-Adapt is our Best Value pick because its price-point is lower than other Tempur-Pedic models; it currently costs $2,199 in a Queen size. However, this is still more expensive than most competing all-foam models, making it a good pick for shoppers with bigger budgets.

Good for:

  • Side and back sleepers
  • Sleepers in the light and average weight groups
  • Couples
  • Those who tend to sleep hot

Best Luxury TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt

The aptly named TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is one of the Tempur-Pedic’s newest, introducing multiple new technologies designed to enhance sleep. At 13 inches high, the bed is built from two layers of different TEMPUR foams. On top sits the TEMPUR-ES Comfort Layer with a unique cell structure that delivers a softer feel. Below, the tighter cell structure of the TEMPUR-APR+ Support layer contributes pressure relief. The LuxeAdapt is wrapped in Tempur-Pedic’s proprietary SMARTCLIMATE Dual cover system, which includes a removable, cooling outer layer and a stretchy comfort inner layer.

Like virtually all Tempur-Pedic beds, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt offers superior contouring, spinal alignment, and pressure relief. The LuxeAdapt also offers above-average motion isolation. The bed is available in ‘Soft’ (3) and ‘Firm’ (7) versions, though we recommend the firm model so those who sleep on their back can benefit from the additional support.

As a luxury bed, the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is among the more expensive Tempur models, at $3,999 for a Queen.

Good for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination)
  • Sleepers in every weight group (light, average, heavy)
  • Couples
  • Those who tend to sleep hot

Best for Pressure Relief TEMPUR-breeze

The TEMPUR-breeze offers exceptional contouring through a system of memory foam layers. The bed comes in essentially two versions, each with two levels of coolness.

The 12-inch PRObreeze is the warmer of the two beds, and comes in a choice of “Medium’ or ‘Medium Hybrid’ (5). The PRObreeze features a cooling SmartClimate cover over a PureCool phase change material — a special substance that releases thermal energy during the night. Next comes a Tempur CM+ comfort layer, a memory foam layer designed for enhanced airflow and pressure relief. Below is a support layer of Tempur-Pedic’s signature memory foam material. The Tempur-PRObreeze is priced at $3,799 for a Queen.

The LUXEbreeze sleeps even cooler than its counterpart, and comes in a choice of ‘Soft’ (3) or Firm (7) feel. The bed features virtually the same design as the ProBreeze, with one key difference: instead of the original Tempur material support layer, the LuxeBreeze features a TEMPUR-APR support layer that adds extra ventilation. The bed is also slightly taller than the PRObreeze, measuring in at 13 inches high. The TEMPUR-LUXEbreeze is priced at $4,499 for a Queen.

Good for:

  • Every type of sleeper (side, back, stomach, combination)
  • Sleepers in every weight group (light, average, heavy)
  • Sleepers with aches or back pain
  • Sleepers who tend to sleep hot

Tempur-Pedic Mattresses for Back Sleepers Buyer's Guide

Curious about how we chose the top models listed above? Learn more in the Tempur-Pedic for back sleepers buying guide below.

Types of Back Sleeper Positions

There are three general positions associated with back sleeping:

  • Savasana: Both arms and both legs are fully extended and straight.
  • Soldier: Both arms are fully extended, as is one leg; the other leg is bent at the knee.
  • Starfish: Arms are bent at the elbow with hands at head level; legs may be fully extended or bent at the knee.

None of these positions are considered ‘more correct’ or ‘better’ than the others; personal preference and comfort is the most important factor.

Considerations for Back Sleepers

When shopping for a new mattress, back sleepers should consider the following:

  • Firmness: Unlike side sleeping, back sleeping is a position that naturally aligns the spine. However, mattresses that are too firm may result in gaps between the lower back and the sleep surface, which can lead to aches and pains. Mattresses that are too soft, on the other hand, will sink too far down. The right balance of firmness and softness is needed to keep the spine straight and prevent aches and pains. For this reason, the majority of back sleepers prefer mattresses that are Medium or Medium Firm.
  • Mattress materials: Most back sleepers prefer memory foam or latex mattresses (as well as certain hybrid models) because they feature contouring surfaces that naturally conform to the curvature of their spine. Furthermore, these mattresses have longer lifespans, and will not sag in the middle as quickly; sagging can lead to spinal misalignment. Innerspring mattresses, on the other hand, offer little to no conforming and often begin to sag within three to four years. As a result, innersprings are considered less than ideal for back sleepers.
  • Body weight: Experience with a particular mattress will depend on the sleeper’s weight. Those who have below-average weights (less than 130 pounds) tend to prefer softer mattresses because firmer models don’t conform to their bodies as easily due to insufficient weight. People with above-average weights (more than 230 pounds) may experience uncomfortable sinking in mattresses that are too soft. In both cases, this can lead to pressure and discomfort

Tempur-Pedic Mattress Construction

Tempur-Pedic does not disclose detailed specifications about the materials used in the brand’s mattresses. However, the seven current models share the same general construction:

  • Memory foam comfort layers: Although each Tempur-Pedic model varies in terms of thickness and foam density, all of the brand’s mattresses are made with at least one memory foam comfort layer.
  • Varying support cores: Bed in the Cloud and Contour collections have high-density polyfoam support cores. The Flex Supreme Breeze is a hybrid, meaning its support core features pocketed coils. The three Adapt series models are available as all-foam beds with high-density polyfoam cores; alternatively, the ProAdapt and Adapt are also sold as hybrids, which have foam-encased pocketed coils instead.
  • Varying cover compositions: Adapt series mattresses have cooling covers. All other Tempur-Pedic models have polyester covers.
