What You Need to Know about Stearns & Foster Mattresses

Mattress Type and Components:

  • Stearns & Foster (a division of the Sealy Corporation) offers innerspring and hybrid mattresses as part of four exclusive collections. These collections are listed below in order of price-point (from lowest to highest).
    • The Estate Collection features innerspring mattresses. The comfort layer is designed with a top layer of standard memory foam, followed by a bottom layer of gel memory foam. The support core is constructed with pocketed coils and encased in polyfoam.
    • Mattresses in the Lux Estate Collection feature a memory foam comfort layer with a built-in pillow top layer and pocketed coil support core encased in polyfoam.
    • The Lux Hybrid Collection includes mattresses with layers of standard memory foam and gel memory foam in the comfort layer. The support core features foam-encased pocketed coils; please note that Stearns & Foster lists the mattresses in this collection as ‘hybrids’, even though they share the same general construction as the three innerspring collections.
    • The Reserve Collection has comfort layers with four key components: a top ‘hybrid pillow top’ layer, a second layer of gel memory foam, a third pillow top layer, and a bottom layer of standard memory foam. The support core features pocketed coils encased in polyfoam.
  • All four collections feature mattresses with stretch-knit covers made of a Tencel® lyocell blend.

Pros:

  • Stearns & Foster offers a wide selection of hybrids and innersprings in different firmness ratings, which accommodates a large segment of mattress buyers.
  • According to our feedback, Stearns & Fosters owners claim their mattresses conform more closely than most innersprings and hybrids, and alleviate a fair amount of bodily pressure.
  • Stearns & Foster mattresses minimize heat retention and sleep cool, and customers claim the responsive surface is suitable for sex.

Cons:

  • Customers note that Stearns & Foster mattresses tend to degrade somewhat quickly, resulting in premature indentations and sagging.
  • The price-point of most innersprings and hybrids from Stearns & Foster is above-average compared to similar mattress models.
  • Stearns & Foster does not disclose most mattress specifications or measurements, making it hard for consumers to research individual models based on factors like foam density, comfort layer thickness, and cover composition.

Sleep Trial and Warranty Information

Trial Period and Guarantee: Stearns & Foster mattresses are available through third-party retailers. For this reason, customers should defer to the sleep trial and return policy of the brick-and-mortar location where they purchase their mattress.

Warranty: Sealy offers a 10-year limited warranty for all Stearns & Foster mattresses.

  1. Warranty coverage begins on the date of original purchase. The warranty coverage will depend on the product label issued with the mattress.
    1. Products with the 10/10 label will receive nonprorated coverage for the entire duration of the 10-year warranty. This means owners will not have to pay additional charges for replacing a defective mattress. However, they will be responsible for shipping and transportation fees; these fees will never exceed standard freight charges.
    2. Products with the 5/10 label will receive nonprorated coverage for the five years. From years five to 10, owners will pay a prorated charge to replace their defective mattress. This charge is calculated by multiplying the original mattress price and the number of years the mattress has been owned, and then dividing that product by 10. For instance, a mattress priced at $600 that has been owned for seven years will result in a prorated charge of $420 during that entire coverage year.
  2. If a mattress has been discontinued, Sealy will use the most comparable mattress in their current line to calculate the prorated charge.
  3. Replacement mattresses will be protected under the same warranty as the original model. Owners who wish to upgrade will pay the difference in price between the original mattress and the upgrade model.
  4. Stearns & Foster mattresses are designed for use with certain types of foundational support. A queen- or king-size mattress must be supported with a bed frame that has a ‘rigid bridge bar with a supporting leg’ and at least five legs or at least five ‘equally spaced hardwood slats’. Sealy will void the warranty if the mattress is used with an inadequate support system, or if the mattress is found to be in unsanitary condition.
  5. Floor or demo models are not eligible for warranty coverage.
  6. The warranty will cover the following mattress defects:
    1. Visible indentations or sagging in the mattress surface that measure one and a half inches (1 1/2″) or deeper.
  7. The warranty will not cover the following:
    1. Indentations or sagging that do not measure one and a half inches (1 1/2″) or deeper. This is considered standard wear and tear.
    2. Repair or replacement requests that occur due to changes in the owner’s comfort preferences.
    3. Burns, cuts, tears, stains, and other types of physical damage that occur due to owner misuse, improper cleaning, and/or inadequate foundational support.
  8. Warranty coverage is exclusively extended to original owners who buy their mattress directly from Sealy or an authorized Stearns & Foster retailer. Those who buy or acquire their mattress from the original owner or an unauthorized Stearns & Foster retailer will do so ‘as is’, and will not qualify for warranty coverage.
