Quick Summary – Purple vs. Tempur-Pedic

Purple was founded in 2015. The brand currently offers two mattress models. Its flagship bed, the Original Purple, is built with Purple’s signature ‘Smart Grid’ comfort layer consisting of buckling-column gel dispersed over an elastic polymer grid, along with transitional and base polyfoam layers. The Original Purple is considered ‘Medium Firm.’ The New Purple is a hybrid mattress designed with the Smart Grid comfort layer and a pocketed coil support core. This mattress is available in three thickness profiles, each with a different corresponding firmness: 11″ (Medium Firm), 12″ (Medium), and 13″ (Medium Soft).

Tempur-Pedic has been selling mattresses since 1992 and currently offers 11 individual models. These include beds in three exclusive collections – Cloud, Contour, and Adapt – as well as a standalone luxury mattress, the GrandBed. Firmness settings vary by model. All 11 of these mattresses are available in memory foam designs; additionally, two models in the Adapt collection are also sold as hybrids.

Purple and Tempur-Pedic mattresses are constructed with different materials and sold at different price-points, but sleepers who own both brands experience comparable levels of conforming, pressure relief, and motion isolation. On this page we’ll look at the unique pros and cons of Purple and Tempur-Pedic mattresses, along with the customer policies of both brands.

How are Purple mattresses built?

All Purple mattresses are constructed with the signature ‘Smart Grid,’ a top comfort layer that consists of buckling-column gel dispersed evenly over an elastic polymer grid. The material conforms closely and alleviates aches and pains much like other mattress materials, such as foam or latex, but it withstands wear better and will not deteriorate as quickly. The Original Purple and New Purple mattresses also have transitional foam layers for added sleeper support.

The Original Purple has a high-density polyfoam base layer, which reinforces the bed and helps prevent sagging in the sleep surface. The New Purple contains pocketed coils in the support core. In addition to providing edge support, the coil layer offers strong air circulation that allows the mattress to sleep exceptionally cool, even by hybrid standards.

The Original Purple and 11″ New Purple mattresses share the same firmness setting, ‘Medium Firm’ (or a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale). The 12″ New Purple is ‘Medium’ (5.5) and the 13″ model is ‘Medium Soft’ (4.5). All Purple mattresses are relatively heavy, making them difficult to lift and rotate for most owners.

How are Tempur-Pedic mattresses built?

Tempur-Pedic was one of the first mattress brands to popularize memory foam as a bedding material. Fittingly, all 11 of the brand’s available models are constructed with memory foam comfort layers. Cloud and Contour collection models, along with the GrandBed, have solid high-density polyfoam support cores. All-foam models in the Adapt series have convoluted polyfoam support cores. Additionally, two models in this series – the Adapt and ProAdapt – are available as hybrids with pocketed coil support cores.

Firmness varies by collection and individual model. All four Cloud series mattresses are considered ‘Soft,’ or 3 on the 1-10 firmness scale. Similarly, all three models in the Contour series are ‘Firm’ (7). The GrandBed is ‘Medium Soft’ (4).

All mattresses in the Adapt series are available in multiple firmness options. The ProAdapt may be ‘Soft’ (3), ‘Medium’ (5), or ‘Firm’ (7); the hybrid version of this mattress is ‘Medium’ (5). The LuxeAdapt may be ‘Soft’ (3) or ‘Firm’ (7). Lastly, the Adapt’s all-foam and hybrid designs are both considered ‘Medium’ (5).

Purple Sleeper Ratings

As the data shows, the Original Purple with its ‘Medium Firm’ feel has earned the highest ratings from sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds and fall in the average to above-average weight groups; some lighter individuals – particularly side sleepers – have found the bed excessively firm. For the New Purple, experiences vary by sleeper weight and selected thickness/firmness. We tested the 12″ New Purple (‘Medium’); those in the average weight group (130 to 230 pounds) reported the highest satisfaction ratings, while lighter and heavier individuals thought the mattress offered a good compromise of body conforming and sleeper support.

Tempur-Pedic Sleeper Ratings

As is the case with Purple mattresses, the sleeper ratings for Tempur-Pedic models vary by firmness setting. Lighter individuals (less than 130 pounds) tend to prefer the deep conforming of ‘Soft’ or ‘Medium Soft’ beds, making the GrandBed, Cloud Series, ProAdapt, and LuxeAdapt models the most suitable options. Heavier individuals (more than 230 pounds), on the other hand, tend to feel more comfortable on the firmer models in the Contour and Adapt series that do not conform as closely and won’t sink excessively.
