Purple vs. Tempur-Pedic Mattress Comparison

Last updated on

Purple was launched in 2015 following a successful Kickstarter campaign, and began selling mattresses in January 2016. The company currently offers two mattress designs. The Purple, the brand’s flagship mattress, features 1.8 PCF polyfoam and buckling-column gel in the comfort system, and high-density polyfoam in the support core. The second model, the New Purple, is a hybrid mattress; the comfort system features buckling-column gel, and the support core is constructed with pocketed coils. The New Purple is available in three thickness options (11, 12, or 13 inches), and each thickness has a different firmness.

Tempur-Pedic, Inc., was established in 1992, and the company merged with the Sealy Corporation in 2012 — though both brands remain separate entities. Tempur-Pedic’s current selection includes 16 models sold in three collections. The Cloud and Contour collections are all memory foam mattresses, and the Flex collection consists of hybrids.

Both brands have received average to above-average customer satisfaction ratings. This page will compare and contrast Purple and Tempur-Pedic in terms of pricing, size availability, construction, and performance, as well as the delivery, return, and warranty policies of both companies.

Mattress Performance Comparison

Next, let’s compare Purple and Tempur-Pedic based on performance factors like durability, motion isolation, temperature neutrality, and odor potential. All ratings are generated using authentic customer and owner reviews. Please note that we have not received sufficient feedback regarding the New Purple (which was introduced in 2018); we will update this section once we have enough data.

CategoryCriteriaPurple RatingTempur-Pedic RatingWhat Users Say
Customer SatisfactionBased on data collection, this is an overall customer sentiment regarding the X and Y mattresses.79% (Purple)
No ratings for New Purple
77% (Flex)
74% (Contour)
71% (Cloud)
The Purple has earned a higher customer satisfaction rating than all three Tempur-Pedic collections, but the Flex and Contour are considered above-average compared to other mattresses with similar designs.
Durability The average mattress will perform for at least seven years before it needs to be replacedFairExcellent (Flex)
Very Good (Cloud and Contour)
Tempur-Pedic mattresses tend to last at least one to two years longer than the average mattress. The Purple mattress appears to have good durability, but this model is relatively new and has not been evaluated for long-term performance.
Motion IsolationFoam-based mattresses are designed to minimize motion and isolate it from other areas of the sleep surface, which can cut down on nighttime disruptions.GoodVery Good (Cloud and Contour)
Good (Flex)
The Cloud and Contour collections absorb and minimize transfer to a significant extent; the Purple and Tempur-Pedic’s Flex collection isolate motion to a degree, but not as much.
Sex Foam-based mattresses are less responsive by design, and may not be as suitable for sex as innerspring or hybrid models.FairVery Good (Flex)
Fair (Cloud and Contour)
The Cloud and Contour collections from Tempur-Pedic and the Purple may not be responsive enough for some couples, but models in the Flex collection are suitably bouncy.
ConformingFoam-based mattresses conform closely to sleeper’s bodies, which can help align the spine, target pressure points, and alleviate back painGoodVery Good (Cloud and Contour)
Good (Flex)
The Cloud and Contour mattresses conform closely to alleviate a good deal of pain and pressure. Pressure relief is about average for Flex collection models, as well as the Purple.
Temperature NeutralityFoam retains more body heat than other materials, and foam mattress owners often ‘sleep hot’ as a result.GoodGood (Flex)
Fair (Cloud and Contour)
The Cloud and Contour mattresses sleep fairly warm, but temperature neutrality is better for the Flex collection. The Purple sleeps considerably cooler as well.
Off-gassingSome mattresses emit particles when they are unpackaged, accompanied by unpleasant ‘off-gassing’ smells that can last for days.GoodFair (Flex)
Poor (Cloud and Contour)
Off-gassing is a chief complaint among owners of Cloud and Contour mattresses, and Flex collection models also emit a fair amount of odor. The Purple has less off-gassing potential.
Edge SupportBecause of their construction, foam-based mattresses often provide little to no edge support and may sink prematurely in areas of the bed where people tend to sit.PoorVery Good (Flex)
Poor (Cloud and Contour)
Mattresses in the Flex collection provide much better edge support than those in the Cloud or Contour collections, as well as the Purple.
NoiseFoam-based mattresses create little to no noise, due to their lack of springs, coils, and other metal componentsExcellentExcellent (Cloud and Contour)
Good (Flex)
The Purple and mattresses in the Cloud and Contour collections are all virtually silent when bearing weight. Flex collection models may produce some noise due to their coils, but not as much as most other hybrids.
Ease of Moving and RotatingAll mattresses are relatively heavy when it comes to moving and rotating, but some are heavier and more unwieldy than others.  FairFair (all models)Purple and Tempur-Pedic mattresses are all heavier than average, making them fairly difficult to move and maneuver.

When shopping for a new mattress, it’s important to take body weight and preferred sleep position into account. The next table compares the Purple and all Tempur-Pedic mattresses based on these two criteria; we do not have enough data to generate ratings for the New Purple at this time.
