Puffy vs. Leesa – Our 2022 Mattress Comparison Guide

Written by Tuck Staff

The Bottom Line.

  • The Leesa and Puffy are both triple-layer foam mattresses with a ‘medium-firm’ feel.
  • The Leesa excels in spinal alignment for side and back sleepers.
  • The Puffy is great for couples looking for a mattress that isolates motion.

Puffy vs. Leesa Mattress Overview

Puffy vs. Leesa Mattress Overview

Puffy began in 2016 and currently makes two mattresses. Their flagship mattress is the Puffy, constructed of three layers of foam. The bottom layer provides balanced support while contouring to the body, giving the mattress a sleeping “in” feeling rather than sleeping “on.” The middle layer is made of comfort pressure relief foam. The upper layer is breathable climate-adaptive foam that keeps the bed from getting too hot or cold.

Measuring 10 inches thick, it’s a medium-firm bed. On the 1-10 firmness scale, the Puffy comes in at a 5.

Leesa was founded in 2014 and now manufactures several mattresses, bed foundations, and pillows. The company’s flagship mattress is the Leesa. The mattress is made with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers. The support core is made of high-density polyfoam. It ranks medium in terms of firmness, or a 5 on the 1-10 scale, and measures 10 inches thick.

Leesa participates in a social impact program and donates one mattress for every 10 sold, making Leesa an attractive company for those looking to support charitable causes.

In this guide, we’ll compare the Leesa flagship mattress to the original Puffy memory foam mattress. Both mattresses share similarities like three layers of foam construction, but they also differ in significant areas including firmness, layer composition, and sleep trial time. This guide will compare both beds in terms of pricing, construction, and performance. We’ll also cover shipping, returns, and the warranty policies of both brands.

Sleep Position Ratings

Leesa Mattress Sleeper Ratings

The Leesa is a ‘Medium’ firmness bed that provides targeted pressure relief, conforming to the sleeper’s body. We found it optimal for side sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds, as well as back and stomach sleepers who weigh under 230 pounds. Heavier individuals may find the Leesa too soft and not supportive. This softness can cause compromised support by sagging which can cause pain and pressure points to build up while sleeping.

The lower profile of this foam mattress is best for those who don’t have trouble getting in or out of bed. The Leesa Hybrid is firmer with more edge support and is therefore better for those who need extra support getting in and out of bed.

Puffy Mattress Sleeper Ratings

The Puffy mattress rates “excellent” in both motion isolation and noise, making it a great choice for couples looking for undisturbed sleep. Based on our testing, sleepers under 230 pounds found it comfortable for all sleeping positions. The Puffy mattress also rates well for temperature neutrality thanks to the top two layers constructed with breathable foam that doesn’t trap heat in the mattress. The Puffy mattress is highly conforming, meaning it hugs the body and gives the sleeper a feeling of sleeping in the mattress rather than on top.

Our Recommendations

Choose the Puffy if...

  • You weigh 230 pounds or less.
  • You are looking for a memory foam mattress that sleeps cool.
  • You like to feeling of a mattress hugging your body.
  • You are looking for a mattress that isolates movement.

Choose the Leesa Mattress if...

  • You suffer from lower back pain, especially for side and back sleepers.
  • You like a mixed feeling of sleeping in a conforming mattress and floating on top of the mattress.
  • You and/or your sleep partner awaken easily due to movement or noise.
  • You like purchasing from charitable companies.

How Is the Puffy Built?

The Puffy mattress is constructed with three foam layers. The top layer is a polyfoam with Puffy’s “cooling cloud” technology that promotes ventilation. The center foam layer provides pressure relief on areas like shoulders, hips, and knees, that can suffer on an uncomfortable mattress.

The bottom layer is a firm support core that promotes spinal alignment while sleeping. The Puffy mattress cover is stain resistant, making wiping up spills simple. It’s also machine washable. All components of the Puffy are made in the US. The queen-size weighs 69 pounds, fairly lightweight for a memory foam mattress.

How Is the Leesa Built?

The Leesa mattress is made with three layers of foam, similar to the Puffy mattress. The support core is 6 inches of stable polyfoam. On top of that is two inches of memory foam and two inches of additional polyfoam. The bed provides cushioning for the sleeper’s body without sagging excessively. This helps with pain and pressure relief, as well as better spinal alignment for side sleepers.

Leesa excels in motion isolation and is virtually silent when bearing weight, making it a great option for couples. The queen-size Leesa Mattress weighs 71 pounds with a height of 10 inches.
