Joybed manufactures and sells ‘no-foam’ hybrid mattresses made with natural-fiber comfort layers. The company’s current selection includes three bed models:
The Joybed LX is 10″ thick, making it the lowest-profile option. It features comfort layers of plant fiber, cotton, wool, and cotton padding. The pocketed coil support core is configured with lower-gauge (thicker) springs along the perimeter for added edge support. The LX is ‘Medium’ or a 5.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale, and also includes an organic-cotton cover.
The Joybed LXC is 11″ thick. Its comfort system includes two cotton layers, as well as layers of plant fibers and cotton padding, making it the only Joybed model that does not contain wool. Like the LX, the LXC has low-gauge pocketed coils for extra perimeter support and includes an organic-cotton cover. The LXC comes two firmness levels: “Medium Plush”, which we rate as a ‘Soft’ (3) and “Medium Firm”, which we rate as ‘Medium’ (5) in terms of firmness.
The Joybed LXP is 12″ thick. Its comfort system includes plant fiber, cotton, wool, and cotton padding layers, along with a transitional layer of minicoils. The LXP has zoned pocketed coils; in addition to low-gauge springs at the edges, the interior springs have different gauges to provide targeted support to various areas of the sleeper’s body. The LXP has an organic-cotton cover, as well. The LXP comes in ‘Soft’ (4) (which they call Medium-Plush) and Medium (5) (which they call Medium-Firm).
Joybed mattresses are great options for eco-friendly shoppers. The beds have earned certifications from various organizations, including the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for the organic-cotton cover and Oeko-Tex for the wool layers.
The natural materials in Joybed comfort layers are also highly breathable, allowing them to regulate the sleeper’s body temperature fairly well. Additionally, Joybed mattresses are much more responsive than many competing hybrids, which makes them better for sex according to most couples. Joybed mattresses are a suitable alternative for sleepers who are dissatisfied with memory foam, latex, and other more conventional mattress materials.
Joybed offers free shipping in the contiguous U.S., and White Glove delivery is available for an additional charge. Each mattress is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. Compared to other hybrids, Joybed models have below-average price-points.

Specifies how long the product maintains structure, providing comfort and support before it begins to deteriorate. For reference, the average mattress lifespan is 6-8 years.
Mattresses made from natural materials tend to be more durable than those with synthetic foams, giving the Joybed LX a longer-than-average expected lifespan.

A measure of how effectively a mattress absorbs motion across its surface, preventing partner disturbance.
Cotton and wool layers isolate motion transfer fairly well, but owners may notice some shifting.

Off-gassing

Most new products emit chemical smells after being removed from packaging. Off-gassing odors are considered non-toxic, but can be quite unpleasant nonetheless.
The Joybed LX emits minimal odor when new, and good airflow prevents new smells from accumulating.

Pressure Relief
x
This refers to the degree to which a mattress molds to or cradles the contours of the body. This helps alleviate pressure point pain, especially on the hips and shoulders.
Cotton and wool layers do not conform to the same extent as memory foam or latex, but the Joybed LX contours to a moderate extent.

Temperature Neutrality
x
The temperature of a mattress throughout the night is affected by how much body heat is retained. Several factors affect temperature neutrality, including material composition, layer thickness, and dissipation of heat through airflow.
The Joybed LX features layers of cotton and wool, naturally breathable materials that regulate the sleeper's body temperature well.

Edge Support
x
The degree to which the perimeter of the mattress supports body weight. In some cases, mattresses may sink when weight is applied. This sinkage, often called “roll-off”, affects how closely you might sleep to the edge of the bed.
The Joybed LX features pocketed coils with low-gauge springs around the edges, which helps reinforce the bed and prevent sinkage in places where people sit.

Noise
x
Certain mattresses – particularly those with coils – can be quite noisy when bearing weight. Others are nearly silent. Material composition is often the limiting factor for noise potential.
The Joybed LX is mostly silent when bearing weight, but the coils may squeak and creak occasionally.

Sex
x
Mattresses that are bouncier and more responsive tend to be better for sex, as they’re easier to change positions on. In contrast, unresponsive mattresses can cause couples to have trouble switching positions.
The Joybed LX provides a decently responsive surface that should be suitable for most couples.

Motion Isolation
x
A measure of how effectively a mattress absorbs motion across its surface, preventing partner disturbance.
Cotton layers do not isolate motion as much as memory foam or latex, but the Joybed XLC absorbs and minimizes transfer to a noticeable extent.

What Type of Sleeper is Best Suited to a Joybed Mattress?
Based on our customer feedback, Joybed LX mattresses have received the following grades among sleepers of different weights and preferred sleep positions. At this time, we have not received enough feedback from mattress owners and testers to generate ratings for the Joybed LXC or LXP models; we will update this section as soon as we have sufficient data.
Please note that these ratings are subjective, and that everyone has varying experiences on different mattresses. Sleeper comfort and spinal support are the most important factors when it comes to selecting a mattress.
For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

The Joybed LX is ‘Medium’ (5.5), meaning it is optimal for sleepers who weigh between 130-230 pounds. Lighter individuals may to find the LX too firm; the softer versions of the LXC and LXP models will probably feel more comfortable and alleviate more pain and pressure for sleepers in this weight group.
At 10″ thick, the Joybed LX has a profile that is on par with that of the average mattress.

How Does the Joybed Mattress Compare to Other Beds?
As any consumer does with a product they’re considering, our mattress assessments naturally involve comparing them with other similar products. Be it composition, firmness, or price, we think it’s important to see how Joybed mattresses stack up to other beds.
Joybed mattresses are all-natural and eco-friendly alternatives to other beds made from memory foam, synthetic latex, and other manmade fabrics. The LX, LXC, and LXP each have different firmness and thickness settings, and the brand’s selection should accommodate most sleepers regardless of their weight or preferred position – though the beds are softer and more plush than most hybrids. Comfort layers of cotton and wool, along with a sturdy pocketed coil with good airflow, allow the beds to sleep fairly cool for most. The low-gauge coils along the perimeter ensure sturdy edge support, as well.
Check out our selections below if you’d like to see a few comparable mattresses.
The table below lists firmness, thickness, and composition specs for each model. Please note that Joybed does not disclose individual layer thickness measurements.
Firmness is rated on a scale of 1 to 10. For more information on how firmness is calculated, please visit our Mattress Firmness page.
