Essentia Mattress Reviews

The Bottom Line.

  • Essentia offers Canadian-made latex mattresses built for exceptional durability, consistent sleep temperatures and great support.
  • Made from eco-friendly natural latex and organic cotton.
  • Essentia mattresses have high price-points – $2,400 to $6,500 for a Queen-size – and are good options for those with larger budgets.

Quick Summary

Quick Summary

Essentia is a Canada-based mattress manufacturer that offers latex mattresses made from natural and organic materials. The brand currently sells seven individual models, all of which share the same thickness profile of 8″. Furthermore, all Essentia mattresses include organic-cotton covers and Dunlop latex support cores; they differ in terms of comfort layers and firmness settings. Essentia mattresses are sold as part of three exclusive collections.

  • The Lifestyle Collection consists of two models. The Stratami is a Essentia’s only all-latex mattress, with a comfort layer of organic latex. It is considered ‘Medium Firm,’ or 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. The Tatami has a 1 inch comfort layer of memory foam, followed by a 7 inch support core. It is considered ‘Firm’ (7).
  • The Performance Collection also includes two models. The Classic 8 has a 2 inch comfort layer made of memory foam. It is considered ‘Medium Firm’ (6). The Energie Opus is very similar to the Classic 8, but its memory foam comfort layer is 3 inch thick and its firmness is considered ‘Medium’ (5).
  • The Wholebody Collection includes three mattress models. The Beausommet features a top 1 inch comfort layer of memory foam and a bottom comfort layer of memory foam. It is considered ‘Medium Firm’ (6.5). The Dormeuse is similar to the Beausommet, but both comfort layers measure 2 inch apiece and the support core is 1 inch shorter. The Dormeuse is ‘Medium Soft’ (4.5). The Dormeuse Fior, like the Dormeuse, is ‘Medium Soft’ (4). It is constructed with two memory foam comfort layers, a 3 inch top layer and a 2 inch bottom layer.

This review will exclusively focus on the models listed above. Essentia also offers two children’s beds, the Grateful Bed Jr. and the LaLa Crib Bed. Please note that a former Essentia model, the Bionda, has been discontinued.

Essentia has earned certifications from the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS). This makes any Essentia mattress a good pick for eco-friendly bed shoppers. Essentia’s current line is also suitable for those who sleep hot, as well as anyone who prefers a low-profile bed.

Essentia offers free shipping in the contiguous U.S. and the 10 Canadian provinces. White Glove delivery is available for an extra charge. Each Essentia mattress is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a 20-year warranty.

What Type of Sleeper is Best Suited to an Essentia Mattress?

Based on our customer feedback, Essentia mattresses have received the following grades among sleepers of different weights and preferred sleep positions.

Please note that these ratings are subjective, and that everyone has varying experiences on different mattresses.

Sleeper comfort and spinal support are the most important factors when it comes to selecting a mattress.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

Essentia Mattress Recommendations

Low mattress profiles are considered most suitable for back and stomach sleepers; side sleepers may also find these models comfortable if they offer sufficient cushioning and spinal alignment.

Most Essentia mattresses are ‘Medium Firm’ to ‘Firm,’ making them a good option for back and stomach sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds.

Side sleepers generally find Essentia’s models that are ‘Medium’ or softer provide the best support. However, anyone who prefers average to above-average mattress profiles will probably find Essentia beds too short.

People who weigh less than 130 pounds may find that Essentia beds – particularly firmer models – do not offer sufficient body conforming and spinal alignment; alternatively, those who weigh more than 230 pounds may find the beds too thin since heavier people tend to prefer thicker profiles.

  • You have a larger shopping budget, as most Essentia models have above-average price-points
  • You tend to sleep hot
  • You and/or your sleep partner awaken easily due to movement or noise
  • You want a mattress that is considered organic and eco-friendly

Compare Mattresses

How Does an Essentia Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

As any consumer does with a product they’re considering, our mattress assessments naturally involve comparing them with other similar products. Be it composition, firmness, or price, we think it’s important to see how Essentia mattresses stack up to other beds.

Essentia mattresses are ideal for shoppers who are looking for an eco-friendly bed – and don’t mind paying a relatively high price for it.

The brand’s current line offers a firmness range of ‘Medium Soft’ to ‘Firm,’ which should accommodate most customers regardless of their firmness preferences. However, all Essentia mattresses measure 8″ thick, and these beds may not be suitable for those seeking a higher-profile bed.

Benefits of Essentia mattresses include good temperature neutrality (due to their latex cores and breathable organic-cotton covers) and no noise when bearing weight. Firmer models are responsive enough for sex, as well.

    1. This sleep trial does not require a break-in period. Customers may return the mattress at any point of the 120-night trial.
    2. Mattress exchanges are allowed during the trial period, as well.
    3. In the event of a return, Essentia will deduct a transportation fee from the refund that amounts to roughly 9% of the original product price. However, this charge will be waived and a full refund will be issued if the mattress becomes or is found to be defective during the trial.

    Warranty

Essentia offers a 20-year warranty for all current mattress models:

    1. This warranty is partially prorated. During the first 10 years, Essentia will repair or replace defective mattresses at no cost to the owner. Prorated coverage kicks in beginning in year 11, when owners must pay 50% of the original product price to replace the mattress. In year 12, they pay 52%; in year 13, they pay 55%; in year 14, they pay 60%; in year 15, they pay 65%; and in years 16 to 20, they pay 75%.
    2. This warranty does not include the cover, which is backed by a separate two-year warranty.
    3. Warranty coverage is contingent on proper foundational support. Per Essentia: “Substitutions or use of improper foundations, platforms, or other bases upon which the mattress is placed, may result in damage to the product. Should the product be damaged by the use of an improper base by the consumer, this warranty is void.”
    4. The warranty will cover the following defects:
      • Visible sagging or indentations in the sleep surface measuring three-quarters of an inch (3/4″) or deeper.
    5. The warranty will not cover the following:
      • Sagging or indentations in the sleep surface that do not measure three-quarters of an inch (3/4″) or deeper, or normal increases in mattress softness that do not compromise the bed’s supportive and pressure-relieving abilities. These issues are considered standard wear and tear.
    6. This warranty is non-transferable. It is exclusively available to original owners who purchase their mattress from Essentia or an authorized retailer. Those who buy or acquire their mattress from the original owner or a non-authorized retailer do not qualify for warranty coverage.
