Recommended for...
- People who share the bed. The memory foam comfort layer reduces motion transfer and provides a quiet sleep experience, minimizing sleep disruptions when sleeping with a partner.
- Those who sleep hot. Phase-change materials in the cover of the Cocoon Chill provide advanced temperature regulation.
- Those who prefer the “hug” of memory foam. The bed’s memory foam comfort layers provide a pressure-relieving cradle and the feeling of sleeping “in”, rather than “on”, the bed.
Not Recommended for...
- Heavyweight individuals. As an all-foam mattresses, the Cocoon Chill does not provide enough support for heavier individuals, who will likely sink too far into this mattress.
- People who have trouble getting out of bed. The Cocoon Chill lacks edge support which leads to sagging around the perimeter, making it difficult to sleep or sit near the edge of the bed.
Ratings Summary
Tuck’s testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Cocoon Chill Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.
Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.
As you can see, the Cocoon Chill Mattress earned favorable ratings across the board. For more details about each of these ratings, check out our full breakdown below.
Sleep Position Ratings
As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Cocoon Chill Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.
For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.
How Is the Cocoon Chill Mattress Constructed?
Cover
The Cocoon Chill mattress has a breathable stretch-knit cover made with a polyester and cotton blend. The cover is infused with phase change material designed to draw heat away from the sleeper for a cooler sleep experience.
Comfort Layers
Both the Extra Firm and Medium-Soft models have a 2-inch layer of memory foam with a density of 3 pounds per cubic foot (PCF). This is considered low density for memory foam, and the mattress may develop body indentations sooner than a mattress made with denser foams. Low-density memory foam won’t contour as closely as high-density memory foam, but it tends to sleep a little cooler.
The Medium-Soft model contains an additional 2-inch layer of polyfoam with a density of 1.8 PCF. This high-density polyfoam provides additional cushioning between the sleeper and the support core.
Support Layers
Like most foam mattresses, the Cocoon Chill uses high-density polyfoam to provide a durable and supportive base layer.
The support core of the Extra Firm model is made with 8 inches of 1.8 PCF polyfoam. This is considered high-density polyfoam and should provide robust support that prevents the body from sinking in too far. The Medium-Soft model contains 6 inches of high-density 2.2 PCF polyfoam, which provides adequate support for lightweight and average-weight sleepers.
Mattress Height
The Cocoon Chill is 10 inches tall, which is a standard height for a foam mattress, though the bed’s poor edge support may make it difficult for some to get in and out of the bed.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?
Cocoon by Sealy defines the Medium-Soft version as between 3 and 8 on the firmness scale, and the Extra Firm version as 8 to 10 on the firmness scale. Our sleep testers found the Medium-Soft to correspond to a 4 (medium soft), and the Extra Firm to correspond to a 6 (medium firm).
The Medium-Soft version contours closely to reduce pressure points and provides the traditional “hug” feeling of memory foam. Lightweight individuals and side sleepers benefit the most from the mattress’ conforming abilities and will feel like they are sleeping “in” the mattress.
In contrast, individuals who choose the Extra Firm version will feel more like they are sleeping “on” the bed. This version offers is better-suited to stomach sleepers and average weight individuals.
Testers on our team who weigh more than 230 pounds found that even the firm version of the mattress did not provide enough support. This is consistent with most foam mattresses, which lack the extra support of coils found in an innerspring or hybrid mattress.
Ratings Breakdown
Performance Ratings
Durability
The Cocoon Chill was released in 2016 and there is not yet enough long-term data to determine its expected lifespan. Our analysis of the bed’s durability is therefore based on the its construction and materials.
All-foam mattresses don’t tend to last as long as innerspring, hybrid, or latex mattresses. Moreover, the low-density foams used in the comfort layers of the Cocoon Chill mattress are likely to develop body impressions quicker than higher-quality foams.
Based on these facts, we expect the mattress to have a below-average lifespan. We recommend rotating the mattress head-to-foot every three to six months to minimize sagging and body impressions.
Motion Isolation
When sharing the bed with a partner, our testers found that motion from one side of the bed hardly transferred at all to the other side of the bed. This is common for memory foam mattresses, which have a slow response to pressure that does a good job of absorbing and isolating motion. Individuals on our sleep team who share the bed found that they were able to toss and turn without disturbing their partner.
The Medium-Soft model does slightly better on motion isolation than the Extra Firm model, thanks to the two extra inches in the comfort layer.
Off-Gassing
The Cocoon Chill released some off-gassing odors when we first unboxed the mattress. This is common in mattresses that contain memory foam and polyfoam. Every foam mattress will off-gas to some extent, but the smell is not harmful and should dissipate within a few days.
The foams used in the Cocoon Chill are CertiPUR-US certified, which guarantees them to be free of ozone depleters and low in volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.
Pressure Relief
We subjected the Cocoon Chill to a series of pressure-mapping tests and found that the mattress did a great job of alleviating pressure points, especially the Medium-Soft model. This model forms a close cradle typical of traditional memory foam, contouring to the body to reduce pressure points.
Side sleepers on our testing team found that the Medium-Soft version helped prevent the sore spots that frequently occur due to hips and shoulders digging into the mattress.
With only 2 inches of memory foam before the firmer support layer, the Extra Firm model doesn’t conform as closely. This model is better-suited to stomach sleepers and heavier individuals who need extra support to keep from sinking too far into the mattress. Combination sleepers on our testing team also found it easier to change sleeping positions on the Extra Firm model.
Temperature Neutrality
Our sleep testers reported that the phase-change materials in the mattress cover succeed in providing a comparatively cool sleep experience. Foam mattresses have a tendency to trap heat, and this is exacerbated by the fact that many foam mattresses offer close contouring that restricts airflow around the body.
In contrast, our testers found that the Cocoon Chill mattress actively draws heat away from the body. The cover actually feels cool to the touch thanks to the phase-change materials, although the effect isn’t as noticeable when using a mattress protector or fitted sheet.
Edge Support
As an all-foam mattress without reinforced edges, some of our sleep testers found that the foam compressed quite a bit along the bed’s perimeter, especially in the Medium-Soft version. This led to the feeling of roll-off and made the bed unsuitable for sitting on the edge. Couples who share a small mattress will find that this reduces the usable sleep surface, as they will be unable to sleep near the edge of the mattress.
Weak edge support is a common drawback of all-foam mattresses. Those who value edge support may prefer an innerspring or hybrid mattress with coils that are specially designed to provide reinforced edge support.
Noise
Thanks to the memory foam in the comfort layer, our sleep testers found that the Cocoon Chill mattress made virtually no noise when bearing weight. As an all-foam mattress, the Cocoon Chill does not contain any of the usual noisy culprits such as springs. Since it also does an excellent job of minimizing motion transfer, light sleepers should not experience any disturbance from sleeping on this mattress with a partner.
Sex
Our sleep team rated the mattress below-average for sex due to the poor edge support and the memory foam’s slow response to pressure, which makes it difficult to move around. However, for people who don’t tend to switch positions often, the memory foam might actually offer an advantage by providing deeper traction. The mattress is virtually silent, making it discreet during sex.
Sleeper Ratings
Now that we’ve seen what kind of sleep experience the Cocoon Chill mattress offers, it’s time to examine how this changes for different sleeper profiles.
Depending on body type and preferred sleeping position, each individual will interact slightly differently with a given mattress. To get a comprehensive idea of how the Cocoon Chill performs, we tested it out with sleep testers that represented a range of body types and sleeping positions.
Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.
The Medium-Soft model was the clear choice for lightweight sleepers on our testing team. The extra comfort layer of polyfoam allows the sleeper to sink deeper into the mattress before reaching the firm support layer. This deep cradle formed by this combination of comfort layers alleviates pressure points, especially in side sleepers.
Likewise, the memory foam in the Medium-Soft model provides a comfortable cradle for back sleepers, while the support layers help maintain proper spinal alignment.
Individuals who mostly sleep on their stomach may find that the mattress is slightly too soft, which allows extra sinkage under the hips and can lead to back pain. Therefore, most stomach sleepers are better served by the Extra Firm model.
Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.
Average weight side sleepers on our sleep team found that the Medium-Soft model provides a balance of contouring and support. This allowed their hips and shoulders to sink in a little further while still promoting proper spinal alignment. Likewise, back sleepers experienced cradling pressure relief that offered the right amount of support to keep the spine properly aligned.
Stomach sleepers found that while the Medium-Soft model allowed too much sinkage, the Extra Firm model provided sufficient support to keep the hips from sinking in too far.
Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.
All-foam mattresses tend to lack adequate support for heavyweight individuals, and the Cocoon Chill received mixed reviews from the heavier individuals on our sleep team. Because they exert more pressure on a mattress, individuals who weigh more than 230 pounds usually require the extra support provided by the coils in an innerspring or hybrid mattress.
The Medium-Soft model of the Cocoon Chill allows too much sinkage, causing the spine to fall out of alignment and leading to aches and pains in the morning. The Extra Firm model performs slightly better and may provide enough support for some back and side sleepers.
Heavyweight stomach sleepers, however, noted that the bed lacked support. They would be better served by an innerspring or hybrid mattress. These can better support the hips, which tends to be where most people carry the bulk of their weight.

How Does the Cocoon Chill Mattress Compare to Other Beds?
All-foam beds have taken the market by storm and the Cocoon Chill has many competitors with similar builds. Here’s a closer look at some of them.
Cocoon Chill vs. Nectar
The Nectar mattress is an all-foam mattress made with three layers of gel memory foam and a support layer made of high-density polyfoam. The mattress measures 11 inches tall and has a firmness level rated as medium-firm, or a 6 out of 10.
Instead of polyfoam, the Nectar uses a high-density memory foam in the transitional layer for more of a “hug” feel. Slightly firmer than the plush version of the Cocoon Chill, the Nectar mattress is better suited to average weight and heavyweight individuals.
Like the Cocoon Chill, the Nectar offers above-average motion isolation, a quiet sleep experience, and better temperature regulation than competing all-foam mattresses thanks to its gel-infused memory foam. Edge support is also slightly better in the Nectar due to the denser foams.
The Nectar is priced slightly cheaper than the Cocoon Chill, making it a good option for budget-conscious shoppers.

Cocoon Chill vs. The Casper
The Casper is a mixed-foam mattress with several layers of polyfoam and memory foam. The transition layer features different zones, with foams in varying firmness levels, to provide targeted support under the shoulders and hips. It’s considered a “medium” firmness, or 5 out of 10.
Both the Cocoon Chill and the Casper are quiet mattresses with memory foam comfort layers that conform closely and reduce motion transfer. The Casper has a more responsive surface than the Cocoon Chill because it contains a top comfort layer of polyfoam, which lends the mattress some bounce.
This facilitates switching positions, making it a better choice for combination sleepers and for sex. The Casper offers better edge support than the Cocoon Chill, but the Cocoon Chill provides a cooler sleep.
In terms of pricing, the two mattresses are almost identical. However, the Casper has a thick support core and uses high-quality foams that make it more durable than the Cocoon.

Cocoon Chill vs. Leesa Mattress
The Leesa Mattress is 10 inches tall and ranks a 5 out of 10, or medium, on the firmness scale. The mattress consists of several layers of polyfoam and memory foam. The top layer provides close contouring with a relatively quick response to pressure, making it easier to move around and change sleeping positions.
As an all-foam mattress, the Leesa also performs well on noise and motion isolation, but suffers from poor edge support and a slow response to pressure which impedes sex and makes it difficult to switch sleeping positions. While the Leesa sleeps cooler than some other all-foam mattresses, individuals who sleep hot will prefer the Cocoon Chill with its phase-change material.
The combination of foams in the Leesa Mattress provide an even balance between contouring and support that is best for average-weight sleepers. As with the Cocoon Chill, individuals who weigh over 230 pounds may find the mattress lacks proper spinal support.

Cocoon Chill vs. Tuft & Needle Mint
The Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress is entirely made of polyfoam layers, some of which are infused with gel and graphite. These foams contour less closely than memory foam but offer a quicker response to pressure. Similar to the Cocoon Chill, the gel and graphite in the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress ensure a cooler sleeping experience than most all-foam beds.
The mattress has a 12-inch profile and is rated a 6 out of 10, or medium-firm. Like the Cocoon Chill, the softer foams in the Tuft & Needle Mint are better suited to lightweight and average weight sleepers, especially back sleepers. Despite its thick support core, the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress may not offer enough support for heavier individuals.
As all-foam mattresses, both models lack edge support but perform well on noise and motion isolation. Value-seekers may prefer the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress over the Cocoon Chill, as it uses more durable foams and comes at a lower price-point.

Cocoon Chill vs. Loom & Leaf
The Loom & Leaf is constructed with several layers of memory foam and polyfoam, with a plush Euro-top cover. The top comfort layer contains phase-change material, designed to pull heat away from the sleeper.
The Loom & Leaf mattress comes in both 5.5 (medium) and 8 (firm) options, catering to a wide variety of sleep profiles. The generous layers of memory foam do an excellent job of alleviating pressure points in side sleepers and lightweight sleepers. The thicker layers of higher-density foams in the Loom & Leaf provide a deeper cradle than the Cocoon Chill, making it more suitable for heavyweight side sleepers.
As with the Cocoon Chill mattress, the Loom & Leaf does a good job of isolating motion and doesn’t make any sound when bearing weight. This makes it a worthy option for light sleepers who share the bed. The decent edge support in the Loom & Leaf also expands the usable surface area of the bed when sharing a smaller-sized mattress.

Cocoon Chill vs. Purple Mattress
Purple’s flagship mattress features a proprietary Purple Grid made of hyperelastic polymers which contours to reduce pressure points while still allowing for airflow. The rest of the mattress is made from several layers of high-density polyfoam. The Purple Mattress stands at 9.5 inches tall and is ranked as medium-firm, or 6.5 out of 10. It’s priced almost exactly the same as the Cocoon Chill.
The polyfoam base layer offers average support, making the mattress best-suited to lightweight and average-weight individuals. Some stomach sleepers might prefer a firmer surface, and heavier individuals will find the mattress sags too much to provide adequate spinal support.
Just like a foam mattress, the Purple isolates motion well and doesn’t make any noise when bearing weight. The proprietary grid is made of a springy material that offers a better surface for sex compared to the Cocoon Chill. That being said, the Purple Mattress suffers from the weak edge support that is common in foam mattresses, which limits the usable surface area.
