Purple vs. Helix – Our 2022 Brand Comparison

Written by Tuck Staff

The Bottom Line.

  • The Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier are luxury hybrids featuring the signature Smart Grid comfort layer and durable pocketed coils.
  • The Helix LUXE mattress series consists of six memory foam hybrids with cushioning pillow-top layers.
  • Purple and Helix offer different firmness options for these beds.

Purple vs. Helix Mattress Overview

Purple vs. Helix Mattress Overview

Purple is a U.S.-based mattress and bedding product manufacturer. The brand’s beds are best known for the ‘Smart Grid,’ a proprietary comfort layer consisting of buckling-column gel and a hyperelastic polymer grid.

Purple offers two hybrid models, the Purple Hybrid and the Purple Hybrid Premier, which are made with the Smart Grid layer and a pocketed coil support core. The Purple Hybrid  has a 2-inch comfort layer and a medium-firm (6.5) feel. The Purple Hybrid Premier comes in two firmness settings: the Purple Hybrid 3″ with a 3-inch comfort layer and a medium (5.5) feel; and the Purple Hybrid Premier 4″ with a 4-inch comfort layer and a medium-soft (4.5) feel.

Our second brand is Helix, which offers a handful of memory foam hybrid mattresses. For this comparison guide, we’ll be profiling the Helix LUXE series. LUXE models are higher-end versions of Helix’s standard hybrids that have been modified with pillow-top layers and additional memory foam components.

These beds include the Sunset LUXE and Moonlight LUXE with a soft (3.5) feel; the Midnight LUXE and Dusk LUXE with a medium (5.5) feel; and the Twilight LUXE and Dawn LUXE with a firm (7) feel. All LUXE models measure 14 inches thick.

Please note: Purple and Helix offer other mattresses in addition to the models listed above. This comparison guide will exclusively look at the Purple hybrid models and Helix LUXE mattresses. For more information about other models from these brands, please visit our Purple Mattress Reviews and Helix Mattress Reviews guides.

The Purple hybrid models and Helix LUXE models share many similarities. Both mattress collections feature luxury hybrids with thicker-than-average profiles and multiple firmness options. The beds also excel at temperature neutrality and provide more pain/pressure relief than many of their hybrid counterparts. However, there are also some notable differences between these mattresses.

This guide will compare the Purple hybrid models and Helix LUXE models based on construction, pricing, and performance. We’ll also look at the shipping, return, and warranty policies for both brands.

Helix LUXE

Like the hybrid models from Purple, Helix LUXE mattresses are available in three different firmness settings. The Sunset LUXE and Midnight LUXE each have soft feels, making them optimal for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. The Moonlight LUXE and Dusk LUXE have medium feels. These beds may be the best option for side, back, and stomach sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 pounds. Lastly, the Twilight LUXE and Dawn LUXE offer a firm feel for heavier individuals.

How Are the Purple Hybrid Mattresses Built?

The Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier are constructed with the Smart Grid comfort layer also found in Purple’s flagship mattress and pillow. This material consists of buckling-column gel dispersed over an elastic polymer grid. It has a comparable feel to memory foam or latex, but it withstands sagging very well and sleeps exceptionally cool. The Smart Grid’s thickness varies from 2 to 4 inches, depending on the model and selected firmness.

The support core in each model features pocketed coils and measures 7.5 inches thick. The coils reinforce the bed very well to maintain a flat sleep surface and minimize sinkage along the edges. Strong airflow also helps cool off the surface of the bed, which can be beneficial for hot sleepers.

How Are the Helix LUXE Mattresses Built?

Each Helix LUXE mattress has a different comfort system. The Sunset LUXE (soft), Midnight LUXE (medium), and Twilight LUXE (firm) each begin with a pillow-top, followed by comfort layers of gel memory foam, standard memory foam, and transitional polyfoam. The Midnight LUXE (soft), Dusk LUXE (medium), and Dawn LUXE (firm) mostly feature the same comfort components, but the layer of standard memory foam is swapped out for a layer of Helix Dynamic Foam, which is made from a blend of polyfoam and latex.

All six Helix LUXE models have pocketed coils reinforced with a high-density polyfoam base. These components offer resilient support to prevent sagging in the sleep surface and sinkage along the edges. The coil layer also circulates air very well, resulting in cooler surface temperatures. Each Helix LUXE bed measures 14 inches thick, making them much thicker than the average mattress.
