Quick Summary – DreamCloud vs. Purple

DreamCloud was established in 2018. The brand’s flagship DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress – known simply as the DreamCloud – is constructed with comfort layers of gel-infused memory foam, quilted memory foam, natural latex, and standard memory foam. Its support core contains a transitional memory foam layer, followed by pocketed coils encased in high-density foam and a high-density memory foam base. The mattress also has a tufted cashmere Euro-top cover. It measures 15 inches thick and is considered ‘Medium Firm,’ or a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Purple was founded in 2015. The company currently offers one hybrid model known as the New Purple. This mattress has Purple’s signature Smart Grid comfort layer, which consists of buckling-column gel distributed over an elastic polymer grid. Its support core contains pocketed coils. The New Purple is available in three thickness profiles, each with a distinct firmness. The 11-inch model is ‘Medium Firm’ (6.5), the 12-inch model is ‘Medium’ (5.5), and the 13-inch model is ‘Medium Soft’ (4.5). These beds are also known as the New Purple. 2, New Purple. 3, and New Purple. 4, respectively.

Please note: Purple also offers the Original Purple, the brand’s flagship bed. Like the New Purple, the Original Purple has a Smart Grid comfort layer and a the support core made of high-density polyfoam. This guide will exclusively compare the DreamCloud and New Purple mattresses. For more information about the Original Purple, please check out our Purple Mattress Reviews guide.

The hybrid construction of the DreamCloud and high-density foams indicate this mattress should last at least 7-8 years. Our testing did not find any compromising features.

Good

Couples do not report any issue feeling their partner's move on the bed. Our testing found movement was isolated well.

Very Good

The DreamCloud is responsive and offers enough bounce without giving an excessive amount of rebound.

Temperature Neutrality
Good

Though it uses dense foams in its comfort layers, the DreamCloud's cover and coil support base help to keep airflow across the surface.

How is the DreamCloud built?

The DreamCloud’s construction is much more sophisticated than that of the average hybrid mattress. In addition to a hand-tufted cashmere Euro-top cover that offers 2 inches of cushioning, the bed has comfort layers of gel-infused memory foam, quilted memory foam, natural latex, and standard memory foam. These layers create a ‘Medium Firm’ feel that conforms moderately yet consistently. The support core features foam-encased pocketed coils buffered with high-density memory foam transitional and base layers. The coils are zoned to provide more support to the sleeper’s heaviest areas, such as the shoulders and hips.

The DreamCloud sleeps exceptionally cool even by hybrid standards, due in part to its breathable cashmere cover, gel-infused top layer, and strong airflow through the coils. The foam encasement around the support core also helps prevent sagging. The DreamCloud also isolates motion fairly well compared to other hybrids, and its noise potential is minimal. At 94 pounds in a Queen size, it is fairly light for a hybrid as well.

How is the New Purple built?

The Smart Grid comfort layer found in the New Purple mattress features buckling-column gel evenly distributed over an elastic polymer grid. This material cushions the sleeper’s body and conforms consistently to alleviate pressure and discomfort, much like memory foam or latex, but the polymer grid is highly durable and less vulnerable to early wear and tear. The thickness of the Smart Grid ranges from 2 to 4 inches, depending on the model selected. The support core is constructed with pocketed coils.

The New Purple is one of the best beds on the market today for temperature neutrality. The coils promote strong airflow while the Smart Grid also offers great circulation, resulting in cool and comfortable sleep for most. The New Purple also offers better-than-average motion isolation and does not make much noise  both of these factors can benefit couples who awaken easily during the night.

DreamCloud Sleeper Ratings

The DreamCloud has a ‘Medium Firm’ surface that conforms to a moderate but consistent extent. This makes the mattress suitable for most back and stomach sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds, as well as side sleepers who weigh more than 230 pounds. Lighter individuals may find the DreamCloud too firm; this can minimize the bed’s conforming and pressure-relieving properties. Additionally, the mattress has a 15-inch profile that is ideal for larger people, but this factor could make getting in and out of bed difficult for lighter individuals.

New Purple Sleeper Ratings

The firmness/thickness options for the New Purple makes it suitable for a wider range of sleepers. Lighter people – particularly side sleepers seeking better spinal alignment – may find the New Purple. 3 or New Purple. 4 to be most comfortable, since they offer ‘Medium’ and ‘Medium Firm’ settings, respectively. Heavier back and stomach sleepers, on the other hand, will probably prefer the firmer surface of the New Purple. 2. It’s important to note that all three designs have thicker-than-average profiles.
