Casper vs. Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress Overview

Casper vs. Cocoon by Sealy Chill Mattress Overview

Established in 2013, Casper has since become one of the most popular “bed-in-a-box” mattress brands in the U.S. The company’s flagship model, known as the Casper Original, is a mixed-foam bed constructed with a polyfoam comfort layer and zoned memory foam transitional layer. The mattress also includes a support core of high-density polyfoam, as well as a cover made from a blend of fabric and recycled materials. In terms of firmness, the Casper Original is considered medium, which rates as a 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. The mattress also measures 11 inches thick, making it a medium-profile model.

Sealy is a major brick-and-mortar mattress brand dating back to 1881. In recent years, the company has introduced some bed-in-a-box models to its lineup. Their newest online mattress, the Cocoon Chill, is an all-foam model featuring a memory foam comfort layer over transitional and support layers of high-density polyfoam. The bed’s cover is infused with phase-change material (PCM), which is designed to help the surface maintain a comfortable temperature. Customers can choose a medium soft (4) or medium firm (6) feel for their Cocoon Chill. The mattress measures 10 inches thick and is also considered a medium-profile model.

The Casper Original and Cocoon Chill share many similarities. Both are all-foam beds with mid-level feels that excel in areas such as motion isolation, pressure relief, and noise. However, there are a few key differences between these mattresses, as well. In this comparison guide, we’ll see how the Casper Original and Cocoon Chill stack up in terms of construction, pricing, and performance. We’ll also examine the shipping, return, and warranty policies of both brands.

Please note: Casper offers additional bed-in-a-box mattresses, but this comparison will solely focus on the Casper Original and Cocoon Chill. Casper Original Highlights…
  • The mattress has a medium feel, resulting in close body-contouring and pressure relief for people who weigh up to 230 pounds.
  • Thanks to breathable comfort layers, the Casper Original sleeps a bit cooler than many competing all-foam mattresses.
  • The Casper Original offers excellent motion isolation and does not produce any noise, making it a great choice for couples.
Cocoon Chill Highlights…
  • Available with medium soft and medium firm feels, the Cocoon Chill offers a firmness range that should appeal to buyers across different weight groups and sleep positions.
  • Like the Casper Original, the Cocoon Chill isolates motion very well and does not make any disruptive noises when bearing weight.
  • If budget is a factor for shoppers, the Cocoon Chill has a lower price-point in most sizes than the Casper Original.

Sleep Position Ratings

Casper Original

The Casper Original has a medium feel and will contour closely to the sleeper’s body. This makes the mattress well suited to side sleepers because this position often demands more cushioning for the shoulders and hips, which in turn promotes spinal alignment and reduces pressure in these areas. This is particularly true for side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds, though many heavier people who use this position also find the mattress comfortable.

Back and stomach sleepers typically need more support from their mattress to prevent sinkage between the shoulders and hips, where people tend to carry more weight. Otherwise they are susceptible to aches and pains in different areas of the body, namely the neck, shoulders, and lower back. The Casper Original offers a good balance of contouring and stability for back and stomach sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. Heavier people who use the back and stomach sleep positions will probably find the mattress too soft and sink excessively.

Cocoon Chill

Since the Cocoon Chill is available in two different firmness levels, the mattress will accommodate a wider swath of sleepers than the single-firmness Casper Original. The Cocoon Chill’s medium soft version conforms very deeply, creating a body-hugging sensation many people liken to sleeping “in” – as opposed to “on” – the mattress. While heavier individuals may also find this feel comfortable, we believe it is best suited to those who weigh less than 130 pounds.

The Cocoon Chill’s medium firm feel offers more reinforcement, but sleepers still sink a bit beneath the surface. This characteristic can be especially problematic for back and stomach sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds. We recommend the medium firm Cocoon Chill to side, back, and stomach sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds because this feel delivers adequate support while still conforming and reducing pressure.

How Is the Casper Original Built?

The Casper Original begins with a comfort layer of open-cell polyfoam, a breathable and adaptive material that contours to the body. However, the polyfoam is a bit more responsive than memory foam, so sleepers can expect a light bounce when they get in and out of bed. The comfort layer is reinforced with a memory foam transitional layer that also contributes to the bed’s conforming feel. This layer is divided into firmness zones, ensuring enhanced support to the midsection while cradling the head, shoulders, and legs.

The Casper Original’s support core consists of high-density polyfoam measuring 7 inches thick. This material stabilizes the entire mattress and is intended to reinforce the sleep surface and along the edges, but – like other softer all-foam mattresses – the Casper Original still tends to sink a bit. The cover is constructed from a blend of fabric and recycled materials, including up to 45 recycled plastic bottles per mattress. Altogether, the Casper Original measures 11 inches thick.

How Is the Cocoon Chill Built?

The Cocoon Chill’s design is a bit different from the Casper Original’s. This mattress is constructed with a top memory foam layer over a polyfoam transitional layer, so sleepers immediately feel that signature memory foam body-hug as soon as they lie down on the surface. The material softens when exposed to body heat, so it responds slowly. The medium soft Cocoon Chill will contour more closely, but the medium firm models also conform to a noticeable extent.

As with the Casper Original, the Cocoon Chill’s support core is made of high-density polyfoam. Sleepers will notice more sinkage on the medium soft models, but the medium firm models also sink a bit – especially along the edges. The Cocoon Chill’s cover is made of cotton and polyester infused with phase-change material (PCM), which is designed to dissipate body heat from the surface and help the mattress maintain a cool temperature. Some sleepers claim PCM is effective at reducing surface warmth, but for many, the foam layers will still trap some heat and cause the mattress to sleep hot. The Cocoon Chill measures 10 inches thick.
