On a mission to make high quality bedding more affordable, Rich and Vicki Fulop founded Brooklinen — an online-based bedding company that cuts out the middleman to sell products at direct-to-consumer prices.
In addition to sheets, pillows, towels, bath accessories, Brooklinen sells both down-filled and down-alternative comforters. The Brooklinen Down Comforter features a sateen cotton shell filled with sustainable white Canadian down and comes in a choice of Lightweight or All-Season warmth options.
Brooklinen’s Down Alternative Comforter is virtually identical in design, but is filled with a hypoallergenic, vegan-friendly microfiber polyfill that mimics the warmth and texture of natural down. It is also available in both All-Season and Lightweight warmth options.
To help you decide whether Down or Down Alternative Brooklinen Comforters are right for you, we’ve compiled a comprehensive buyer’s guide — beginning with a list of pros and cons.

Brooklinen Down Comforter Rating
What Our Testing Shows
Shell Material Quality
The shell refers to the exterior of the comforter and determines how it feels on your skin. This category rates the quality of the materials used to make the shell.
Very Good
The outer shell of the Brooklinen Down Comforter is crafted from a soft, 400-thread-count sateen fabric. The fabric is sewn in a grid-like, baffle-box construction to keep the filling in place, and includes a loop on each corner to easily attach to a duvet cover.
Fill Material Quality
The fill is the material found in the interior of the comforter. This category rates the quality of the materials used to make the fill.
Excellent
Committed to responsible manufacturing, Brooklinen fills its down comforters with soft, fluffy clusters from the underbelly of ducks and geese from sustainable Hutterite farms in Northwest Canada. The down is sorted and cleaned through a five-step process to ensure the fluffiest, highest quality clusters are selected.
Warmth
This category rates how warm a comforter is. Some comforters will keep you warm in cold temperatures while some require that you bundle up with an additional blanket.
Very Good (Lightweight) and Excellent (All-Season)
Designed to be used during cooler temperatures as well as warmer climates, the All-Season Down Comforter features a higher fill power (700) than the Lightweight version (600). With a higher loft and fluffiness, the All-Season Comforter is able to hold in more heat and keep you warm in cold weather. Alternatively, the lower fill power of the Lightweight comforter means less insulation, so you may need an additional blanket during colder nights to keep you warm.
Breathability
Breathable comforters won’t retain as much heat and will keep users from sleeping too hot. Breathability results from good airflow and a tendency to wick away moisture.
Good (All-Season) and Very Good (Lightweight)
Both the All-Season and Lightweight versions feature a soft, silky sateen cotton shell that allows for good breathability. However, the denser weave may not be as breathable as other weaves, such as percale. With its lower fill-power, the Lightweight version allows for more airflow than the All-Season.
Durability
How long the comforter lasts with proper care. The average comforter lasts for around 15 years.
Very Good
Brooklinen Down Comforters are sewn with a sturdy baffle-box construction to ensure the filling stays in place and the comforters remain fluffy over time.
Cleaning
Depending on the construction, different comforters have different cleaning requirements. This category measures the ease of cleaning the comforter.
Good
Brooklinen Down Comforters should be dry-cleaned for best results.
Overall, our testers were impressed with the sustainable materials and durable design of the Brooklinen Down Comforters.
Those who tend to sleep cold or live in colder climates will appreciate the added insulation of the All-Season Comforter, while those who sleep warm may opt for the lower fill power of the Lightweight version.
Our only notes were that sateen shell, while dense and silky, isn’t the most breathable of cotton weaves. In addition, cleaning may be a hassle for some since the blankets are dry clean only.

What Our Testing Shows
Shell Material Quality
The shell refers to the exterior of the comforter and determines how it feels on your skin. This category rates the quality of the materials used to make the shell.
Very Good
The shell on the Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter is identical to that of the Down version. It’s made from 400 thread count sateen sewn in a baffle-box grid, featuring a loop on each corner to tie to a duvet cover.
Fill Material Quality
The fill is the material found in the interior of the comforter. This category rates the quality of the materials used to make the fill.
Very Good
The Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter is filled with a shaved microfiber polyfill designed to mimic the feel of down. The down-alternative fill is vegan and 100% hypoallergenic.
Warmth
This category rates how warm a comforter is. Some comforters will keep you warm in cold temperatures while some require that you bundle up with an additional blanket.
Good (Lightweight) and Very Good (All-Season)
As with the Down version, the Alternative Down Comforter comes in a choice of two warmths: All-Season (700 fill power) and Lightweight (600 fill power).
Breathability
Breathable comforters won’t retain as much heat and will keep users from sleeping too hot. Breathability results from good airflow and a tendency to wick away moisture.
Good (All-Season) and Very Good (Lightweight)
Like the Down Comforter, the Down Alternative version features a soft, 400 thread count cotton sateen shell. The silky, slightly dense material may not be as breathable as other cotton weaves, though we found the Lightweight version traps less air than the All-Season.
Durability
How long the comforter lasts with proper care. The average comforter lasts for around 15 years.
Very Good
The sturdy baffle-box stitching and high-quality materials give the Brooklinen Down Alternative an above-average durability.
Cleaning
Depending on the construction, different comforters have different cleaning requirements. This category measures the ease of cleaning the comforter.
Good
Similar to the Down Comforter, the Down Alternative version is dry-clean only.
Identical to the Down Comforter except for filling, the Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter is a good choice for those with allergies or those who prefer a vegan product.
Instead of down feathers, the Down Alternative Comforter is filled with a shaved hypoallergenic microfiber polyfill designed to mimic the texture of down. Just like the down version, the Down Alternative Comforter may sleep warm for some due to its denser sateen shell.
Similarly, the Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter is dry clean only.

What You Need to Know About Brooklinen Comforters
Sizing and Pricing
Below you’ll find current prices for both Brooklinen comforters in each available size. For all models and sizes, the Lightweight option is cheaper than the All-Season option. Both prices are listed. Please note the Down Alternative Comforter is not sold in a King/Cal King size.
The Brooklinen Down Comforter is stuffed with soft, fluffy, all-natural down clusters from the insulating layer of inner feathers of adult birds. Brooklinen sources their down from responsible Hutterite farming communities in Northwest Canada, then cleaning it in a rigorous five-stage process and sorting it into small batches to select the fluffiest, highest quality clusters.
The down clusters are encased in a 400 thread count sateen shell that is sewn into a baffle-box grid, so fabric “walls” keep the filling fluffy and evenly distributed. Each corner of the comforter features a loop that can fasten to a duvet cover.
By contrast, the Brooklinen Down Alternative Comforter is filled with a hypoallergenic, vegan shaved microfiber polyfill that is shaved to mimic the texture of down. Like the Down Comforter, the Down Alternative also features a 400 thread count sateen shell sewn in the same baffle-box construction style to keep the filling in place.
