What You Need to Know about the Bed In A Box Mattress

Mattress Type and Components:

  • Bed In A Box offers gel memory foam mattresses.
  • Currently, four different models in this category are available.
  • The PacBed Original, Serenity, and Tranquility mattresses feature a comfort layer constructed from gel-infused memory foam.
  • The Silk Symphony mattress also features the gel-infused memory foam comfort layer, as well as an additional comfort layer of regular polyfoam on the inverse side; this two-sided configuration allows sleepers to flip the Silk Symphony mattress based on their firmness preferences.
  • All four mattresses feature support cores constructed from polyfoam, but each model includes a different cover composition (see specs below for more details).

Pros:

  • With four models and up to 12 sizes available, Bed In A Box offers an extensive selection of mattress options for customers.
  • The Silk Symphony mattress can be flipped to accommodate different sleep preferences.
  • Owners report that Bed In A Box mattresses conforms closer and relieves more pressure than other memory foam options.
  • The mattresses have earned high ratings for motion isolation and noise.
  • All deliveries are free within the U.S., including Alaska and Hawaii.

Cons:

  • With the exception of the PacBed Original, Bed In A Box mattresses are significantly more expensive than comparable memory foam models.
  • Owners also report relatively high levels of unpleasant off-gassing, and edge support has also been a notable issue.
  • Bed In A Box offers a 60-night sleep trial, but this trial requires owners to use the mattress for 60 days before the trial begins; this system can be confusing for some customers that don’t read the fine print.
  • The warranty coverage is also somewhat limited compared to other memory foam mattress brands.

  4. A signature is not required to receive the mattress package unless the customer lives in an apartment or condominium. At the carrier’s discretion, he/she may hold the package at the nearest shipping center or leave it on the customer’s doorstep.
  5. Bed In A Box ships mattresses to army post offices (APOs), but the weight limit for these deliveries is 70 lbs and shipping fees start at $100. Materials that cannot fit into the box will be shipped separately, and incur separate charges.

Sleep Trial and Warranty Information

Trial Period and Guarantee: Bed In A Box offers a 60-night trial on all mattresses that begins 60 days after the original purchase and ends on the 120th day of ownership.

  1. Customers who wish to return their mattress must contact Bed In A Box to request a return merchandise authorization (RMA) number. RMA number requests are not available until 60 days after the original purchase. This means that returning the mattress for a full refund is not an option until 60 days have elapsed.
  2. After the trial officially begins, customers will not be assessed any shipping or restocking fees if they choose to return the mattress.
  3. Mattresses exchanges are not currently available.
  4. Per the Bed In A Box website: ‘Ordering the correct size, model, and thickness of a mattress is the responsibility of the customer‘. Bed In A Box will not accept returns for ‘incorrectly ordered mattresses’, and urges customers with questions to contact the Bed In A Box Sleep Specialist division for assistance in selecting a correctly sized mattress.
  5. Bed In A Box reserves the right to refuse sale to a mattress customer who has previously returned a mattress.

Warranty: Bed In A Box offers a 20-year warranty.

  1. The warranty is divided into nonprorated and prorated coverage periods.
    • The first 5 years of warranty coverage are nonprorated, and Bed In A Box will replace or repair defective mattresses at no expense to the owner.
    • Years 6 to 10 of the warranty are also nonprorated, but the owner will be required to pay transportation and handling costs.
    • Years 11 to 20 of the warranty are prorated. In the 11th year of warranty coverage, the owner will be able to replace the mattress at a cost of 50% of the original mattress price; the prorated charge will increase by 5% for each successive year, ending with a 95% prorated charge during the 20th year of coverage. The owner must pay transportation and handling costs, as well.
  2. The Bed In A Box warranty will cover ‘deterioration in the cell structure’ of the mattress that causes indentations deeper than 1″ during the first 5 years, and deeper than 1.25″ during years 6 to 20. The warranty will not cover indentations for mattresses that are improperly supported.
  3. Bed In A Box mattresses are designed to perform on ‘firm, solid-surface, non-spring’ foundations. The warranty will be voided if the owner supports his/her mattress with ‘unqualified foundations, box springs, adjustable bed bases, or bed frames‘. If a warranty claim is filed, the purchaser may be asked for proof that he/she has used a proper foundation.
  4. The Bed In A Box mattress warranty will not cover the following:
    • Damages to the mattress caused by use of an improper foundation (see previous bullet).
    • Expected increases in the softness of the memory foam, which are considered normal wear and tear.
    • Replacements or repairs due to changes in the owner’s comfort preference.
    • Burns, cuts, tears, liquid damage, stains, ‘abnormal soiling’ and other damages that do not occur during manufacturing or shipping.
    • Replacement of other products that make up the Bed In A Box sleep system, unless these additional components are also defective.
    • Mattresses that are damaged or defective after being left in their original packaging for more than 30 days after the delivery.
  5.  If a warranty claim is filed and a replacement is deemed necessary, the owner will not be allowed to keep the original mattress.
  6. Bed In A Box mattress warranties are only available to the original purchaser. Anyone who purchases or acquires the mattress from the original owner does so ‘as is’, and will not receive warranty coverage.
  7. The warranty does not cover mattresses used in ‘hotels, motels, boarding rooms, nursing homes, and similar environments’, as commercial use will require a different warranty agreement.

Bed In A Box Mattress Sleep Ratings

CategoryCriteriaBed In A Box RatingWhat Bed In A Box Users Say
Customer SatisfactionBased on data collection, this is an overall customer sentiment regarding Bed In A Box mattresses.83% (PacBed Original and Tranquility)
84% (Silk Symphony)
85% (Serenity)
Bed In A Box gel memory foam mattresses have earned above-average customer satisfaction ratings, largely due to the wide range of size and model options, as well as strong overall performance.
Durability Memory foam is engineered to provide a comfortable, conforming sleep surface that retains its original shape over time, but indentations are to be expected.GoodUsers report that the lifespans of Bed In A Box gel memory foam mattresses are comparable — if not slightly better — than the lifespans of comparable memory foam models. This is due in large part to the 2.4 PCF polyfoam used in the support core.
Motion IsolationMemory foam mattresses have been touted for superior motion isolation, which means that motion does not occur throughout the mattress when someone gets up or shifts their position.Very GoodOur feedback indicates that Bed In A Box mattresses isolate motion and reduce motion transfer more effectively than many competing memory foam models.
Sex Many memory foam users report that these mattresses are not very conducive for sex due to the lack of responsiveness, which can create a feeling of ‘fighting’ the mattress.FairBed In A Box mattresses are on par with other memory foam models in terms of conduciveness for sex — but innersprings are still considered the best option in this regard.
ConformingMemory foam mattresses are engineered to conform to the sleeper’s figure, creating a cradle-shaped impression that aligns the spine and targets pressure points.Very GoodUsers report that Bed In A Box mattresses conform closer to the sleeper’s figure and alleviate more pressure points compared to other memory foam models.
Temperature NeutralityMemory foam retains more body heat than other mattress materials, and users often ‘sleep hot’ as a result.FairBed In A Box claims the gel-infused memory foam in its mattresses will reduce heat retention, but some users have indicated that these mattresses sleep uncomfortably hot.
Off-gassingSome mattresses emit particles when they are unpackaged, accompanied by unpleasant ‘off-gassing’ smells that can last for days.PoorEven by memory foam mattress standards, Bed In A Box models produce a high degree of unpleasant off-gassing that may linger for several days.
Edge SupportBecause of their construction, memory foam mattresses often feature little to no edge support.PoorBed In A Box mattresses — like most memory foam models — have been criticized for minimal edge support and premature sinking where people sit along the edges.
NoiseMemory foam mattresses create little to no noise, due to their lack of springs, coils, and other metal componentsExcellentBed In A Box gel memory foam mattresses produce little to no noise. The polyfoam side of the Silk Symphony is an exception.
Ease of Moving and RotatingMemory foam mattresses tend to be lighter, which makes them easier to move. They never need to be flipped, since only one side is designed for sleeping.FairAll Bed In A Box memory foam mattresses are constructed with denser-than-average support core polyfoam that adds to the weight. TheSerenity and Silk Symphony models both weigh more than 100 lbs, and the latter is designed to be flipped.

Complaints

General customer complaints about Bed In A Box mattresses include:

  • Design issues, such as poor edge support and bottom-heavy construction that makes moving somewhat difficult.
  • Higher-than-normal levels of off-gassing.
  • A 60-night sleep trial that does not begin until after 60 nights of ownership, which can potentially confuse customers. Sixty nights is also relatively short, compared to competing mattress brands.
  • Limited warranty coverage; the 20-year warranty only includes five years of nonprorated coverage during which the owner will not have to pay transportation/handling fees when a mattress is replaced or repaired.
