ViscoSoft is a U.S. bedding product manufacturer based in Charlotte, North Carolina. The company offers a wide range of products, including the following five topper models:
- The Select High Density Mattress Topper is a 3-inch topper made from 3.5 PCF gel-infused memory foam encased in a cover of rayon from bamboo. It has a ‘Medium Firm’ feel.
- The Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper is a 4-inch topper constructed with a down alternative pillow-top and a second layer of 2.5 PCF gel-infused memory foam. The cover is made of 300-thread count cotton sateen. It has a ‘Medium Soft’ feel.
- The Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper is available in 2-inch and 3-inch thickness settings. Both are made of gel-infused memory foam and neither includes a cover. This topper has a ‘Medium’ feel.
- The Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper is 3.5 inches thick. It consists of a down alternative pillow-top, along with a second layer of aerated, gel-infused latex. The cover is made of 300-thread count cotton sateen. This topper has a ‘Medium Soft’ feel.
ViscoSoft offers a wide selection of topper options. Customers can choose from multiple firmness, thickness, and composition options, meaning most sleepers will find a ViscoSoft topper that meets their needs and preferences. All ViscoSoft toppers provide good or better motion isolation, and none of them produce any noise when bearing weight. These factors make the toppers a good choice for couples too.
ViscoSoft offers free shipping in the contiguous U.S. Each topper is backed by a 60-night sleep trial and a 3-year warranty. Price-points range from low to fairly high, depending on the selected model.

ViscoSoft Mattress Topper Ratings
After reviewing owner and customer experiences and running the ViscoSoft toppers through our testing process, ratings for the brand’s five topper models are as follows:
|Category||Criteria||Topper Rating||What Our Testing Shows|
|Durability||The average topper needs to be replaced after two to three years of consistent use, though occasional-use toppers may last longer. Material composition is usually the most telling factor about topper durability.||Good||The Select High Density Mattress Topper is fairly firm, and should withstand deterioration better than softer memory foam toppers.|
|Support||Support refers to the topper’s ability to provide a flat, even surface with minimal sagging.||Good||The Select High Density Mattress Topper is firm enough for most sleepers, though sagging is likely to develop over time (a common issue with memory foam).|
|Conforming||Conforming ability refers to how consistently the mattress topper conforms to different areas of the sleeper’s body, and how well it evenly distributes their weight.||Very Good||Due to its ‘Medium Firm’ setting, the Select High Density Mattress Topper conforms to a moderate yet consistent extent. It is best suited for sleepers who weigh at least 130 lbs.|
|Temperature Neutrality||Some topper materials absorb more body heat than others, causing them to sleep excessively warm, while others maintain a consistently comfortable temperature.||Very Good||The Select High Density Mattress Topper sleeps cooler than most of its all-foam competitors due to its breathable bamboo-from-rayon cover and gel-infused foam layer.|
|Motion Isolation||Some toppers absorb and minimize motion transfer whenever someone gets up or shifts position, which prevents sleepers from feeling the movement in other areas of the bed.||Very Good||As is common with memory foam toppers, the Select High Density Mattress Topper isolates and reduces transfer very well.|
|Odor||Most toppers emit off-gassing odor when new, but some models continue to produce smells that sleepers find unpleasant and excessive.||Fair||The Select High Density Mattress Topper emits a fair amount of odor, but the breathable cover helps draw out smells to some degree.|
|Sex||Toppers that are springy and responsive to movement tend to be the best for sex, while less responsive toppers can lead to uncomfortable sinkage during sex.||Fair||The Select High Density Mattress Topper is not very responsive and may be insufficiently springy for some couples.|
|Noise||Most toppers are relatively quiet, but some produce rustling sounds, squeaks, and other noises that can disrupt sleepers.||Excellent||Like other all-foam toppers, the Select High Density Mattress Topper is virtually silent when bearing weight and shouldn’t cause noise disruptions of any kind.|
|Category||Criteria||Topper Rating||What Our Testing Shows|
|Durability||Most toppers need to be replaced after three years of use, while occasional-use toppers deteriorate less quickly. Material composition typically plays the biggest role in durability.||Fair||As is often the case with softer foam toppers (especially those with pillow-tops), the Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper is likely to deteriorate faster than firmer foam models.|
|Support||Supportive toppers offer an even surface that won’t sag excessively.||Fair||Softer pillow-top toppers tend to sag a fair amount, and the Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper is no exception. However, some sleepers prefer the sinking sensation.|
|Conforming||A topper should conform evenly to every area of the sleeper’s body, resulting in a balanced feel with even weight distribution.||Good||The Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper conforms very closely to every area of the sleeper’s body, which makes it ideal for lightweight sleepers, but probably too soft for those weighing 130 lbs. or more.|
|Temperature Neutrality||Some toppers retain a fair amount of body heat from sleepers and feel excessively warm, while others maintain consistent temperatures throughout the night. The cover and topper materials usually play a role in temperature neutrality.||Good||The Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper may be a heat trap for some, but the pillow-top is relatively cool and the gel-infused foam helps bring down temperatures to some extent.|
|Motion Isolation||Toppers that absorb and minimize motion transfer are good options for couples who awaken easily due to movement elsewhere on the bed.||Very Good||The Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper isolates motion transfer very well, and should help cut down on disruptions for sleepers with movement sensitivity.|
|Odor||Off-gassing is normal for new toppers, but some produce smells that are persistent and/or excessively strong.||Good||The down alternative fill in the pillow-top emits minimal odor, but the foam may continue to produce smells after the topper is new.|
|Sex||Like mattresses, toppers that are responsive to movement tend to be springier and better for sex.||Fair||Responsiveness is fair at best for the Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper, and this may be problematic for some couples.|
|Noise||Generally, toppers have low noise potential – but some are made from materials that squeak, rustle, or make other sounds.||Excellent||The Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper is virtually silent when bearing weight.|
|Category||Criteria||Topper Rating||What Our Testing Shows|
|Durability||The average topper needs to be replaced after three years. Consistency of use and material composition both affect the expected lifespan.||Good||The Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper has an expected lifespan of about two and a half to three years, which is on par with comparable memory foam models with ‘Medium’ firmness settings.|
|Support||When discussing toppers, ‘support’ refers to how well the product maintains a flat, sag-free sleep surface.||Fair||Sleepers are likely to experience some sagging on the Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper. This is a common issue with softer memory foam toppers.|
|Conforming||A topper should conform consistently to different areas of the sleeper’s body, resulting in balanced contouring from head to toe.||Good||The Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper conforms to a noticeable extent, and provides comparable contouring throughout the sleeper’s body. Its ‘Medium’ feel is ideal for sleepers who weigh 130 to 230 lbs.|
|Temperature Neutrality||Some toppers trap body heat and sleep excessively warm as a result, while others are made from breathable materials that wick away moisture and keep sleepers cool.||Fair||The Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper does not have a cover to regulate the sleeper’s temperature, and some may find the foam surface to be a heat trap.|
|Motion Isolation||Toppers that absorb and reduce motion transfer on the surface of the bed are a good investment for couples who awaken easily due to their partner’s sleep movements.||Very Good||Like many memory foam toppers (including other ViscoSoft models), the Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper absorbs and minimizes a fair amount of motion transfer.|
|Odor||Off-gassing occurs with most toppers when the product is new, but some materials continue to emit unpleasant smells longer than others.||Fair||Odor potential is somewhat high for the Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper. This is a common issue with memory foam toppers that do not have covers to mask off-gassing smells.|
|Sex||Many couples prefer responsive, springy toppers during sex. Softer, less responsive models often cause uncomfortable sinkage.||Fair||The Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper is not very responsive. This may be an issue for some couples.|
|Noise||Although most toppers are fairly quiet, some completely eliminate creaks, rustling, and other noises.||Excellent||The Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper is virtually silent when bearing weight.|
|Category||Criteria||Topper Rating||What Our Testing Shows|
|Durability||The average topper needs to be replaced after three years of consistent use, though some materials are more durable than others.||Good||Latex is a resilient material that typically outlasts foams, but pillow-top toppers tend to have shorter-than-average lifespans. As a result, the Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper has an average expected lifespan – about three to three and a half years.|
|Support||Supportive toppers offer a flat, even surface with minimal sagging. Unsupportive toppers will sag and feel uneven, which can cause aches, pains, and other discomfort issues.||Good||The Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper, like many latex toppers, provides long-lasting and even support compared to foam-based competitors.|
|Conforming||Regardless of firmness setting, a topper should conform consistently to different areas of the sleeper’s body.||Good||The Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper has a softer feel, but for most sleepers it conforms consistently without sagging too much beneath the sleeper’s heavier areas.|
|Temperature Neutrality||Some toppers retain body heat from sleepers and feel warmer than others. The topper’s material and the cover both play a role in temperature neutrality.||Very Good||The Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper offers great temperature neutrality due to its breathable cotton cover and ventilated latex layer that promotes steady air circulation.|
|Motion Isolation||Toppers that minimize motion transfer from sleeper’s movements can reduce nighttime disruptions for those who share their bed with a partner.||Good||Latex usually does not isolate motion as well as foam, but the Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper absorbs and minimizes transfer to a noticeable extent.|
|Odor||Mattress toppers often emit off-gassing odor when new, but in most cases these smells clear out quickly.||Good||Ventilated latex loses its odor faster than solid-piece latex. As a result, the Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper is not associated with persistent and/or long-lasting smells.|
|Sex||For many couples, the best toppers for sex have springy surfaces that respond to movement. Softer, less responsive toppers may lead to uncomfortable sinking.||Good||The Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper has good responsiveness and should be sufficient for most couples.|
|Noise||Some toppers occasionally squeak and/or rustle, but most make little to no noise.||Excellent||The Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper does not make any noise when bearing weight.|
The four foam toppers from ViscoSoft have earned strong ratings for conforming ability, motion isolation, and noise. These toppers are ideal for couples who awaken easily due to movement or noise, as well as those with chronic aches and pains in their shoulders, back, hips, and other sensitive areas.
ViscoSoft also offers a wide range of firmness options for foam topper sleepers. However, these models can sleep excessively warm for some and emit a fair amount of off-gassing odor. This is particularly true for the Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper, which doesn’t have a cover to help regulate the sleeper’s temperature or mask smells.
The Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper is ViscoSoft’s sole latex model. This topper offers consistent temperature neutrality, making it a good choice for hot sleepers. It is also responsive enough for sex, but also isolates motion to a noticeable degree. This topper, along with the Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper, have pillow-top layers padded with down alternative fill and may be the best options for sleepers who prefer extra cushioning.
The Select High Density Mattress Topper, on the other hand, is the only firm topper option from ViscoSoft and is suitable for people who prefer firmer surfaces and/or find their current mattress too soft.

ViscoSoft’s current lineup includes five distinct toppers that provide different benefits for sleeping. Customers can choose from gel memory foam or latex, pillow-top or non-pillow-top designs, and thickness settings of 2 inches, 3 inches, 3.5 inches, or 4 inches. This range should accommodate most sleepers regardless of their body type, sleep position, or comfort preferences.
ViscoSoft toppers with covers tend to sleep the coolest. The Response Gel Foam Mattress Topper – which doesn’t have a cover – may trap body heat and feel excessively warm. Alternatively, the Serene Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress Topper and Serene Latex Hybrid Mattress Topper offer the most cushioning thanks to their pillow-top layers.
Set-Up and Care Instructions
The set-up process for ViscoSoft toppers is as follows:
- All toppers ship compressed in a box. Take care not to cut the topper when opening the box.
- Two ViscoSoft toppers – the Serene Memory Foam Hybrid and Serene Latex Hybrid – ship with the topper and pillow-top cover not assembled. To assemble these toppers, lay the pillow-top cover over the latex/foam layer and insert the layer using straps located inside the cover. This will keep the topper layer in place. Then, use the cover’s elastic skirting to fix the topper around all four mattress edges. These toppers each have a pocket depth of about 14 inches.
- The other three ViscoSoft toppers do not need to be assembled. For best results, place directly on the mattress and cover with sheets.
The cleaning and care process for ViscoSoft toppers is as follows:
- The memory foam and latex components of ViscoSoft toppers cannot be washed or dried in machines. These layers should only be spot-cleaned with warm water and dish detergent.
- The mattress cover should be machine-washed in cold water on a gentle cycle, then tumble dried on a low setting. The cover should not be ironed or dry cleaned.
ViscoSoft mattress toppers are available on the ViscoSoft website, as well as Amazon.com. The toppers are also sold in a total of 10 brick-and-mortar showrooms, with five in Massachusetts, four in Rhode Island, and one in New Hampshire.
