Mattress Performance Comparison

The next table evaluates Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number mattresses based on performance factors like durability, pressure relief, motion isolation, and edge support. All ratings are generated using authentic customer and owner experiences with each brand. Please note that we do not have sufficient data to generate ratings for the TEMPUR-Legacy memory foam mattress from Tempur-Pedic or the it bed from Sleep Number at this time.

CategoryCriteriaTempur-Pedic RatingSleep Number RatingWhat Users Say

Sleep Number’s airbeds have earned higher customer satisfaction ratings compared to Tempur-Pedic’s current memory foam and hybrid selection.
Durability The average mattress will perform for at least seven years before it needs to be replacedExcellent (Flex)
Very Good (Cloud and Contour)
FairTempur-Pedic hybrids and memory foam mattresses are noted for longer-than-average lifespans. Sleep Number airbeds tend to wear out faster, often due to leaky air chambers and/or foam degradation.
Motion IsolationFoam-based mattresses are designed to minimize motion and isolate it from other areas of the sleep surface, which can cut down on nighttime disruptions.Very Good (Cloud and Contour)
Good (Flex)
Good (all models)Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattresses absorb and minimize transfer to a significant extent. The brand’s hybrids, like Sleep Number airbeds, do not isolate motion to the same extent.
Sex Foam-based mattresses are less responsive by design, and may not be as suitable for sex as innerspring or hybrid models.Very Good (Flex)
Fair (Cloud and Contour)
Fair (all models)Tempur-Pedic Flex hybrids are responsive and bouncy enough for sex, say owners. Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattresses are not as responsive, nor are any of Sleep Number’s current mattresses.
ConformingFoam-based mattresses conform closely to sleeper’s bodies, which can help align the spine, target pressure points, and alleviate back painVery Good (Cloud and Contour)
Good (Flex)
Good (all models)Conforming and pressure relief are one of the chief advantages of using a Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattress, according to owners, and Flex hybrids conform a fair amount as well. Sleep Number has also received good ratings for conforming.
Temperature NeutralityFoam retains more body heat than other materials, and foam mattress owners often ‘sleep hot’ as a result.Good (Flex)
Fair (Cloud and Contour)
Fair (all models)Flex hybrids from Tempur-Pedic retain little body heat and sleep fairly cool compared to Cloud/Contour memory foam mattresses and Sleep Number airbeds.
Off-gassingSome mattresses emit particles when they are unpackaged, accompanied by unpleasant ‘off-gassing’ smells that can last for days.Fair (Flex)
Poor (Cloud and Contour)
Fair (all models)Off-gassing is a primary complaint among Tempur-Pedic mattress owners, and Sleep Number’s airbeds have odor potential as well.
Edge SupportBecause of their construction, foam-based mattresses often provide little to no edge support and may sink prematurely in areas of the bed where people tend to sit.Very Good (Flex)
Poor (Cloud and Contour)
Fair (all models)Flex hybrids from Tempur-Pedic are reinforced around the support core for above-average edge support, while the brand’s memory foam models offer little to no edge support. Sleep Number airbeds offer some edge support.
NoiseFoam-based mattresses create little to no noise, due to their lack of springs, coils, and other metal componentsExcellent (Cloud and Contour)
Good (Flex)
Fair (all models)Noise potential is fairly high for airbeds from Sleep Number. Tempur-Pedic memory foam mattresses are virtually silent, and Flex hybrids produce minimal noise as well.
Ease of Moving and RotatingAll mattresses are relatively heavy when it comes to moving and rotating, but some are heavier and more unwieldy than others.  Fair (all models)Good (all models)Most Sleep Number mattresses weigh between 50 and 90 pounds, making them lighter than the models in Tempur-Pedic’s current selection.

Next, let’s look at the ratings for each Tempur-Pedic and Sleep Number mattress series based on sleeper weight and preferred sleep position. Again, the TEMPUR-Legacy and it bed have not received enough feedback to be considered for these ratings.
