Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Mattress Review

Written by Tuck Staff

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The TEMPUR-Cloud memory foam mattress is Tempur-Pedic’s first bed-in-a-box model delivered directly to the customer’s doorstep.
  • Very good motion isolation and no noise whatsoever.
  • Thanks to its medium feel, the TEMPUR-Cloud offers close body-contouring to alleviate pressure in the shoulders, lower back, and hips.

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Mattress Overview

Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Mattress Overview

In business since 1992, Tempur-Pedic was one of the first mattress brands to popularize the use of memory foam as a bedding layer material. The company currently offers a handful of all-foam and hybrid mattresses made with proprietary TEMPUR memory foam. This review will take a closer look at Tempur-Pedic’s newest model, the TEMPUR-Cloud.

The TEMPUR-Cloud is constructed with two layers of TEMPUR memory foam over a support core of high-density polyfoam. Altogether, the mattress measures 10 inches thick. Its surface feel is considered medium, which corresponds to a 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

The TEMPUR-Cloud is Tempur-Pedic’s only “bed-in-a-box” model, meaning the mattress is compressed in a box for delivery and shipped directly to the customer’s doorstep. Other Tempur-Pedic mattresses are delivered via White Glove couriers. These include the TEMPUR-Adapt, TEMPUR-ProAdapt, TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt, and TEMPUR-breeze°. Check out our Tempur-Pedic Mattress Reviews page for more information about Tempur-Pedic’s models that come with White Glove delivery.

Read on to learn more about the TEMPUR-Cloud in terms of construction and material composition, prices, and performance ratings based on verified owner experiences and our own product testing. We’ll also discuss how this mattress compares to other similarly constructed models and go over Tempur-Pedic’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

Please note: This mattress is different from the Tempur-Pedic Cloud Series, a now-obsolete collection of memory foam mattresses that the company discontinued in 2018. While not directly available through Tempur-Pedic, some Cloud Series models are still sold on Amazon.com and other online marketplaces.

  • Side and back sleepers. The mattress conforms closely enough to align the spine and reduce pressure for side sleepers while maintaining even support for back sleepers.
  • People who weigh 230 pounds or less. The TEMPUR-Cloud delivers a balanced medium feel with a close body contour and adequate support for those in the lightweight and average weight groups.
  • Those who prefer a traditional memory foam feel. Built with two layers of adaptive TEMPUR foam, the mattress conforms closely to create a feeling many liken to sleeping “in” – as opposed to “on” – the mattress.
  • Couples. The TEMPUR-Cloud provides very good motion isolation to minimize disruptions for co-sleepers. It is also completely silent when bearing weight.

Not Recommended for...

  • Stomach sleepers. Some lightweight stomach sleepers may find the mattress comfortable, but many will sink a bit too deeply beneath the surface and experience added pressure.
  • People who weigh more than 230 pounds. Since the mattress has a medium feel and contours quite closely, many sleepers in the heavyweight group will find it too soft and prone to uncomfortable sinkage.
  • Shoppers on a tight budget. At $1,999 in a queen size, the TEMPUR-Cloud is fairly expensive for a memory foam mattress – particularly a bed-in-a-box model.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

As you can see, the TEMPUR-Cloud excels in certain areas – such as motion isolation and pressure relief – but has earned lower ratings for others. Check out our full breakdown below for a detailed description of each rating.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

How Is the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud Constructed?

The TEMPUR-Cloud is encased in a cover made from a stretch-fabric blend. Tempur-Pedic does not disclose the composition of its mattress covers, but the material has a soft and breathable feel. The cover should never be washed or dried in a household machine. Tempur-Pedic recommends spot-cleaning if stains occur.

Comfort Layers

The TEMPUR-Cloud’s comfort layer is made from proprietary TEMPUR memory foam. The material provides close contouring and responds slowly to the body, resulting in a deep, pressure-relieving cradle that is characteristic of traditional memory foam beds. Please note that Tempur-Pedic does not disclose the thickness of this layer, or any other layers of the TEMPUR-Cloud.

Transitional Layer

The TEMPUR-Cloud also contains a second layer of TEMPUR memory foam, which is slightly firmer and denser than the comfort foam. This acts as a transitional layer that prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress. That said, the TEMPUR-Cloud has a medium feel and adapts very closely, so sinkage will likely occur for some sleepers – particularly those who weigh more than 230 pounds.

Support Layers

The TEMPUR-Cloud’s support core consists of high-density polyfoam. This material stabilizes the entire bed to maintain even support for sleepers and reduce sinkage along the edges, though the mattress as a whole is not particularly supportive due to its medium feel and close body contour.

Mattress Height

The TEMPUR-Cloud measures 10 inches thick, making it a medium-profile mattress. Although Tempur-Pedic does not disclose individual layer measurements, it’s clear that the TEMPUR-Cloud’s comfort and transitional layers make up a considerable portion of the bed’s overall profile. By sacrificing base layer thickness, the TEMPUR-Cloud delivers deep body-conforming and limited support.

Product Name Firmness Options Thickness Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

Tempur-Pedic helped to popularize traditional memory foam mattresses beginning in the 1990s, and the TEMPUR-Cloud offers a deeply contouring feel reminiscent of these earlier models. Sleepers sink rather slowly into the mattress as the foam adapts to their figure, resulting in a cradling sensation akin to lying “in” the mattress, not “on” it. The memory foam will soften when it comes into contact with the sleeper’s body heat, then cool and return to its original shape once they get out of bed.

The TEMPUR-Cloud has a medium feel that rates as a 5 on the 1-10 firmness scale. Those who weigh up to 230 pounds should be able to rest comfortably on the mattress, but heavier people won’t receive as much support and may sink excessively. For some, this sinkage will make moving across the surface and getting in and out of bed somewhat difficult.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, we’ll take an in-depth look at performance ratings for the Tempur-Pedic TEMPUR-Cloud. Each rating is generated from a careful analysis of verified owner experiences, as well as our own product research and testing.

Durability

The TEMPUR-Cloud was released in 2020. Since this model is so new, we haven’t had the chance to test it against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability rating for the mattress is based on other factors, such as owner experiences and Tempur-Pedic’s overall reputation.

We expect the TEMPUR-Cloud to perform for about seven to seven and a half years before a replacement is needed. This expected lifespan is fairly long for a memory foam mattress, but Tempur-Pedic has a strong track record for mattress longevity. The memory foam layers are fairly dense and will not lose their shape as quickly as the foams found in many competing mattresses. That said, people who weigh more than 230 pounds may notice deep sagging and body impressions more quickly than lighter individuals. Over time, these can impact how comfortable and supportive the mattress feels.

To preserve the TEMPUR-Cloud’s surface, we recommend rotating the mattress head-to-foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the TEMPUR-Cloud for motion isolation, we asked two testers to lie side-by-side on the mattress. One tester moved around while the other felt for motion transferring across the surface. Both testers agreed the mattress performed very well in this category. The dense memory foam layers absorb motion very well and prevent it from spreading to other areas of the mattress, even when someone shifts positions or gets in and out of bed.

The TEMPUR-Cloud and other beds with exceptionally dense memory foam layers tend to excel at motion isolation, even compared to other memory foam models. By significantly reducing transfer, this mattress can help cut down on sleep disturbances for couples.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noticed a strong off-gassing odor after unboxing the TEMPUR-Cloud. When they re-evaluated the mattress a few days later, the smells were not as harsh but still noticeable. TEMPUR-Cloud owners may detect off-gassing odors for a week after unboxing, possibly longer. This can be attributed to the dense memory foam layers. Polyfoam and memory foam are generally associated with the strongest off-gassing smells, particularly those with a higher density.

If smells persist for a few days after the unboxing takes place, we suggest placing the mattress in a well-ventilated room. This can help to flush out bothersome smells more quickly.

Pressure Relief

To evaluate the TEMPUR-Cloud for pressure relief, our testers took turns lying on a sensory pad that tracks pressure buildup in the shoulders, lower back, hips, and other areas of the body. They also shifted positions to see if pressure increased or decreased when lying on their sides, back, and stomach.

The mattress has a medium feel and conforms very closely, meaning it will provide excellent pressure relief for some sleepers and may cause added pressure for others. However, most testers reported less overall pressure. In our sleeper ratings below, we’ll explain how body weight and sleep position affect pressure relief on this mattress.

Temperature Neutrality

Memory foam is associated with above-average heat retention, and many of our testers found that the TEMPUR-Cloud sleeps a bit warm. This is a common complaint regarding all-foam beds with softer feels because sleepers experience less surface airflow as they sink into the mattress. As a result, heavier individuals may feel less comfortable on the mattress than lighter individuals.

Edge Support

To evaluate the TEMPUR-Cloud for edge support, our testers sat along the edges of the mattress as an owner would do when getting in and out of bed. They also took turns lying near the edges to check for feelings of “roll-off,” which many liken to being ejected by the mattress.

As is the case with many softer memory foam mattresses, the TEMPUR-Cloud does not feel particularly stable along the perimeter. All of our testers experienced at least some sinkage – and for those in the heavyweight group, the sinkage was deep enough to make getting on and off the mattress difficult. Additionally, many of our testers did not feel secure lying near the perimeter. Heavier individuals may feel confined to the center of the mattress, which can be problematic for some couples.

Noise

The TEMPUR-Cloud is completely silent when bearing weight. This is a common trait among all-foam and all-latex mattresses because they lack internal components associated with disruptive noises, such as steel coils or the electric air chambers used in airbeds. The TEMPUR-Cloud’s quiet design and superior motion isolation make the mattress an excellent choice for couples.

Sex

The TEMPUR-Cloud’s design and feel offer some benefits for sex, as well as a few limitations for couples. The bed’s close body contour ensures very good traction to help couples maintain a single position for prolonged periods of time, though heavier individuals may sink a bit too much and feel as though they are trapped in the mattress. Edge support may be another issue. Couples that feel less secure near the perimeter won’t be able to use the entire mattress surface and may feel confined to the middle. However, the mattress offers one major benefit for couples: it is completely silent and won’t make too much noise during amorous activities.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, our team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

The TEMPUR-Cloud is well-equipped for sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds due to its medium feel and close conforming. Our testers in this weight group mostly agreed. Side sleepers noted generous padding for their shoulders and hips, which in turn helped to align their spine and reduce pressure points throughout the body. Back sleepers in the lightweight group also found the mattress very comfortable. The memory foam contours closely enough to alleviate pressure but the mattress does not sink excessively beneath the torso or waist.

For stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds, the TEMPUR-Cloud offers good support but still sinks between the shoulders and hips – not to an excessive degree, but enough to affect how comfortable the mattress feels. Some stomach sleepers who enjoy a traditional memory foam feel may prefer a firmer mattress instead, but others will find the TEMPUR-Cloud reasonably comfortable.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Our average weight testers were a bit more divided than their lightweight counterparts when it comes to the TEMPUR-Cloud. Side sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds noted an excellent balance of contouring and support. The mattress promoted even spinal alignment, alleviating their pressure points in the process. Back sleepers in this weight group also found the mattress very comfortable, but they reported some moderate sinkage around the midsection.

Ratings from stomach sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds were not as favorable. Those who use this position are more susceptible to aches and pains; many people carry a disproportionate amount of weight in their chest and stomach, and sleeping face-down can pull the entire body toward the mattress. For most of our average weight stomach sleepers, the TEMPUR-Cloud was too soft and prone to uncomfortable sinkage.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Most people who weigh more than 230 pounds prefer firmer mattresses that provide extra reinforcement for their bodies. Otherwise, deep sinkage and added aches and pains may occur. Our heavyweight testers generally agreed the mattress was too soft. This was especially true for back and stomach sleepers, most of whom experienced excessive sinkage and more pressure.

Side sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds also reported sinkage, but not to the same extent. There’s potential for added pressure in the shoulders and hips for side sleepers in this weight group, but those who prefer a deep body cradle will probably find the TEMPUR-Cloud reasonably comfortable.

How Does the TEMPUR-Cloud Compare to Other Beds?

When searching for a new mattress, we recommend comparing a wide range of brands and models in order to find the best fit. In this next section, we’ll see how the TEMPUR-Cloud stacks up to other Tempur-Pedic models and similarly constructed mattresses from competing brands.

TEMPUR-Cloud vs. TEMPUR-Adapt

The TEMPUR-Adapt is available in two designs. The all-foam model is constructed with two memory foam layers over a polyfoam base. The hybrid option also includes two memory foam layers, but swaps the polyfoam base for pocketed coils. Both TEMPUR-Adapt models have a medium (5) feel that is very comparable to the TEMPUR-Cloud’s. Close contouring and deep cushioning make the mattress a good option for side and back sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds.

The TEMPUR-Cloud and all-foam TEMPUR-Adapt have earned comparable ratings in other performance categories, as well. Both mattresses excel at motion isolation and pressure relief, but they also produce quite a bit of off-gassing odor and feel fairly weak along the perimeter. The TEMPUR-Adapt hybrid is more responsive and does not absorb as much motion, but it also feels stronger along the edges and does not produce as much odor.

The TEMPUR-Adapt is slightly more expensive than the TEMPUR-Cloud, but both beds have above-average price-points. Delivery is a key difference. The TEMPUR-Cloud can be shipped directly to the customer’s doorstep, while the TEMPUR-Cloud qualifies for free White Glove delivery – including in-home setup and old mattress removal – anywhere in the contiguous U.S.

Read our full Tempur-Pedic Mattress Review.

TEMPUR-Cloud vs. TEMPUR-ProAdapt

Like the TEMPUR-Adapt, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt is available in all-foam and hybrid designs. Customers can choose from soft (3), medium (5), and firm (7) feels for their foam TEMPUR-ProAdapt, while the hybrid delivers a medium (5) feel. Comparatively, the TEMPUR-Cloud offers fewer options for shoppers – though the feel of medium TEMPUR-ProAdapt mattresses is very comparable.

The TEMPUR-Cloud and foam TEMPUR-ProAdapt models perform at roughly the same level in most categories, including pressure relief, motion isolation, and edge support. The hybrid TEMPUR-ProAdapt is a bit sturdier than its all-foam counterparts, especially around the perimeter, and its coils promote stronger airflow to keep sleepers cooler. Like the TEMPUR-Adapt, the TEMPUR-ProAdapt qualifies for free White Glove delivery in the contiguous U.S. It is significantly more expensive than the TEMPUR-Cloud, so for many shoppers, the choice will come down to personal budget.

Sleepers looking for a medium-feel all-foam bed that conforms closely may feel comfortable on either the TEMPUR-Cloud or TEMPUR-ProAdapt. However, those with differing firmness or construction preferences should opt for the TEMPUR-ProAdapt instead.

Read our full Tempur-Pedic Mattress Review.

TEMPUR-Cloud vs. TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is an all-foam mattress from Tempur-Pedic available in two firmness levels. Customers can select a soft (3) option that delivers a deep, body-cradling contour or a firm (7) model that feels very supportive. These two options make the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt more versatile than the TEMPUR-Cloud.

The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt and TEMPUR-Cloud perform at the same level in most categories, but firmness difference is a factor for some. The firm TEMPUR-ProAdapt offers the best edge support and temperature neutrality, while the soft model completely eliminates motion transfer for couples. The TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt is one of Tempur-Pedic’s most expensive mattresses, so the TEMPUR-Cloud is affordable by comparison – but customers in the contiguous U.S. who order the former will receive free White Glove delivery.

Aside from price, firmness differences should be the deciding factor for most buyers. The TEMPUR-Cloud provides the most balanced feel with a noticeable contour and adequate support, while the TEMPUR-LuxeAdapt will be better suited to those seeking a softer or firmer feel.

Read our full Tempur-Pedic Mattress Review.

TEMPUR-Cloud vs. Leesa

The Leesa is a mixed-foam mattress constructed with a polyfoam comfort layer and memory foam transitional layer. A polyfoam surface creates some responsiveness on the surface, as opposed to the slowly responding memory foam of the TEMPUR-Cloud. However, both mattresses offer a medium (5) feel and conform rather closely.

The Leesa is composed of lower-density foams in the top two layers. These materials are more breathable than the TEMPUR foam layers, so sleepers shouldn’t feel as warm on the Leesa and the mattress does not release as much off-gassing odor. For other performance categories, such as pressure relief and motion isolation, the Leesa and TEMPUR-Cloud have earned similar ratings.

The Leesa costs considerably less than the TEMPUR-Cloud, so many shoppers will base their decision on price alone. Beyond that, the mattresses are quite comparable and most sleepers up to 230 pounds should find either quite comfortable.

TEMPUR-Cloud vs. Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf by Saatva shares many similarities with the TEMPUR-Cloud. Both beds are constructed with two layers of memory foam to deliver the close and even body contour sleepers have come to expect from this material. The Loom & Leaf is also available in a medium (5.5) feel, as well as a firm (8) option that provides more enhanced support for heavier individuals.

Above-average durability is a shared strength of these mattresses. While many memory foam models lose shape quickly, the TEMPUR-Cloud and Loom & Leaf have relatively long lifespans thanks to their high-quality materials. By the same token, each model has the potential to absorb and trap body heat, sleeping fairly warm in the process.

The Loom & Leaf costs a bit less than the TEMPUR-Cloud and Saatva offers free White Glove delivery anywhere in the contiguous U.S. If price and shipping are not important factors, then either bed should be suitable – though heavyweight sleepers will likely prefer the firm Loom & Leaf.

Read our full Loom & Leaf Mattress Review.

TEMPUR-Cloud vs. T&N Original

The T&N Original from Tuft & Needle is an all-polyfoam mattress. It contains a comfort layer of adaptive, graphite-infused polyfoam over a high-density foam support core. The T&N Original’s feel is considered medium firm (6.5), so it doesn’t conform as closely as the TEMPUR-Cloud but also offers more support for heavier individuals.

Since polyfoam is more responsive than memory foam, T&N Original sleepers are less likely to sink deeply into the mattress. The comfort layer of this mattress will not trap as much body heat, either, so hot sleepers will likely find this model more comfortable. At the same time, the TEMPUR-Cloud isolates motion better and alleviates more pressure for certain sleepers.

The T&N Original costs much less than the TEMPUR-Cloud, and this will likely play a role in most buying decisions. Otherwise, shoppers should base the choice on their optimal conforming and support levels.
