Quick Summary

Spruce CBD is a newer CBD brand, having been founded in 2018. The family-run business was started by two founders who set out to repair what they viewed as the broken nature of the pharmaceutical industry.

In developing the Spruce product line, they’ve focused heavily on quality over quantity. Spruce CBD may have a smaller selection than other CBD brands, but everything they sell is third-party tested, sourced from organic, pesticide-free American hemp, and produced without any artificial flavors or preservatives. Currently, the Spruce CBD product line includes two CBD tinctures and a CBD cream.

Spruce CBD’s selection includes full-spectrum CBD tinctures and topicals. The company’s made a name for itself through its dedication to quality. Their hemp is organically farmed in Colorado and Kentucky. All other ingredients are vegan, naturally sourced, and gluten-free. Despite the lab-grade quality of their products, they’ve managed to keep their pricing on par with the industry standards, at about $0.11 to $0.13 per milligram.

Take a Look at the Spruce Product Lineup

  • Lab Grade CBD Oils: Spruce CBD offers two CBD tinctures: a natural peppermint flavored, mid-strength 750mg tincture, and an unflavored, high-strength 2,400 milligram tincture. Both tinctures contain their organic hemp extract in a base of organic hemp seed oil.
  • CBD Topical Cream: Each 2 ounce jar contains 300 milligrams of CBD with a pleasant scent, derived from plant-based ingredients. Other ingredients include water, mineral oil, petrolatum, glycerin, microcrystalline wax, lanolin alcohol, paraffin, panthenol, magnesium sulfate, decyl oleate, octyldodecanol, aluminum stearates, citric acid, magnesium stearate, methylchloroisothiazolinone, and methylisothiazolinone.

Spruce CBD’s product line caters to CBD users on both sides of the spectrum, whether they are brand new to CBD or more experienced. Their lower-strength tincture, with 750 milligrams of CBD, comes in a natural peppermint flavor specifically formulated to be more palatable to users who are new to CBD. As for their higher-strength tincture, Spruce CBD recommends it for more experienced users with a better understanding of their dosage needs.

Both tinctures include graduated droppers, so it’s easy to adjust the dose as needed. Spruce CBD recommends thier tinctures for daily use, while they recommend applying their topical creams on an as-needed basis.

Materials and Sourcing

Spruce CBD partners with family-owned farms in Kentucky and Colorado to source their hemp. Their hemp is certified 100% organic and pesticide-free.

Next, Spruce CBD uses ethanol to extract their CBD from the hemp plant. Ethanol extraction is a safe and natural method for extracting highly-concentrated CBD oils. However, this all-natural process can result in some chlorophyll remaining present in the final hemp extract. Chlorophyll is a natural pigment found in green plants like hemp, and it’s safe to consume. However, it can lend the CBD oil slightly more bitter taste. As a result, Spruce CBD’s unflavored 2400mg tincture may taste earthier than some other all-natural CBD tinctures.

Third Party Testing

Spruce CBD submits all their products to third-party lab, ProVerde Laboratories, for testing. The lab analyzes the cannabinoid profile of each batch of their products, and confirms that no heavy metals, bacteria, mycotoxins, or pesticides are present.

Spruce CBD does make these test results available to consumers, upon request. Currently, they only display the lab results for their 750mg tincture on their website. To view the Certificate of Analysis for their other products, you’ll have to call their customer service team.

Flavor and Appearance

Unflavored CBD oils, especially those extracted using a natural solvent like ethanol, can have a strong hemp taste. Spruce CBD’s high-strength 2400mg tincture is no different. It has a very strong taste, but fortunately it goes away quickly, with little to no unpleasant aftertaste.

While their high-strength tincture has a heavy earthy flavor, the lower-strength 750mg tincture is flavored using natural peppermint. Both tinctures are nearly clear, with a slightly yellow tint.

The CBD cream has a white, lotion-like consistency, and feels smooth upon application. It absorbs quickly and is easy to rub in between the joints or on larger areas of skin.

Potency

Spruce CBD oils use full-spectrum hemp extracts. As a result, their products contain a high concentration of CBD, along with small amounts of other cannabinoids, terpenes, and other natural plant materials.

These other cannabinoids may include THC, but it’s always in trace amounts—0.3% or less. For example, the third-party lab didn’t detect any THC whatsoever in their 750 milligram tincture. Even though Spruce CBD products contain less than 0.3% THC, and won’t produce an ethereal high, the company does caution that this small amount could cause a false positive on a drug test for marijuana.

Spruce CBD’s products are high-potency. In fact, the 750 milligram tincture contains 26.46 milligrams of CBD per milliliter, which is about 1.5 milligrams more than the advertised amount. The 750 milligram tinctures also contain low amounts of cannabinoids CBC and CBN, as well as beneficial terpenes like beta-caryophyllene and D-limonene.

While it takes some experimentation to land on your ideal dose of CBD, the two strengths offered by Spruce CBD should cover most use cases. The 750 milligram strength may be better suited to new users, or those taking CBD in lower amounts. Spruce CBD recommends the 2,400 milligram strength for people who want to experience the maximum effect of CBD. These dosages are approximations and highly subjective due to the nature of CBD consumption; always consult your physician about the best starting dose before trying CBD for the first time.
