Quick Summary

The Somnox Sleep Robot aims to help people fall asleep faster and get better, more restorative sleep each night. The robot is controlled from a smartphone app. Once in the app, the sleeper can choose from various settings which are preprogrammed or they may choose to customize their settings to suit personal preference.

Weighing four pounds, the sleep robot is covered in a thin, soft foam layer to give it the feeling of a pillow. Once turned on, the Somnox “breathes” by expanding and retracting just like lungs. The sleep robot is the size of a small throw pillow and shaped like a peanut or a kidney bean. Somnox says this design is optimal for sleepers to cuddle or hug the sleep robot.

While hugging the Somnox, users should mimic its breathing pattern (selected in the app). This meditative breathing is said to reduce the time it takes for an individual to fall asleep. Additionally, the Somnox can play audio tracks of the users choice including white noise, ambient sounds, music, or an audio book.

Designed by robotics engineers in the Netherlands who had family members suffering from insomnia, the Somnox Sleep Robot aims to help sleepers fall asleep without any medication.

The breathing rhythm, sound, and feel of the robot creates a calming environment when it’s hugged. Users say it’s much like sleeping with a pet or a baby and note the soothing effect it has on the sleep experience. Users may select a timed setting for the breathing and audio or allow the Sonmox to turn off on its own when it detects the user is asleep.

How Does the Somnox Sleep Robot Work?

The Somnox Sleep Robot has three distinct features that assist in providing a soothing sleep experience to the user.

Breathing regulation: Breathing exercises can be a useful tool for some who struggle to fall asleep. Breathing techniques bring the body into a relaxed and calm state. Focusing on breathing can help quiet the mind of racing thoughts that promote stress and anxiety which can interfere with falling asleep and having restorative, quality sleep. The Somnox Sleep Robot moves as if it were inhaling and exhaling. The sleeper mimics the breathing pattern of the robot. In the app, the user can select from numerous breathing rhythms or they may customize their own. It’s possible for the sleeper to customize a breathing pattern to that of a loved one which many users say is calming especially while sleeping alone.

Audio: The Somnox Sleep Robot contains a speaker that can play relaxing sounds to lull the user to sleep. Users may select from several preloaded options within the app or they may upload their own. Meditative tracks, lullabies, white noise, and the sound of a heartbeat are all options within the app. Users select the duration of the audio in the app, as well. Simple volume controls are on the bottom of the sleep robot near the power button. Users who prefer a silent room can choose to not enable any audio.

Comfort: The shape of the Somnox Sleep Robot is designed to be optimal for spooning. Similar to a sleep tracker, the robot contains sensors that measure the sleeper’s heart rate and breathing. Both of those are located on the convex side of the sleep robot so those will be most efficient when the robot is hugged.

The robot is covered with a thin foam layer so it feels similar to a heavy stuffed animal. The removable outer cover is a soft 100 percent cotton fabric.
