Celebrate Sleep Awareness Week 2018

Everyone knows how important a great, restful night sleep is to their health and wellness. This fact feels especially poignant this week for two reasons.

First, Daylight Saving Time just “took” one hour of most of America’s precious, much-needed sleep. And second, March 11 marked the start of Sleep Awareness Week 2018.

Sleep Affects Everything and Everyone

Sleep Awareness Week, a National Sleep Foundation event, was founded to educate people about the importance of sleep health. The week-long celebration started on March 11 and runs until March 17.

This year’s theme is “Begin with Sleep”. The Foundation picked the theme to educate people about how “good sleep” can help everyone achieve their personal, family, and professional goals.

In addition to educating people about how “good” sleep makes life better, the event also will promote information that concerns the following:

  • The benefits of optional sleep.
  • How sleep affects a person’s health, well-being, and safety.

Promoting Good Sleep via Social Media

To get out the sleep-positive message, Sleep Awareness Week also has crafted a hashtag—#YourDayBeginsWithSleep—that will be spread across the National Sleep Foundation’s various social sites. Other “sleep awareness” tools and promotions include:

  • An infographic
  • Pre-written content
  • Bedtime calculator
  • Downloadable Sleep Awareness Week posters

The Benefits of Educating People About Good Sleep

Sleep Awareness Week is a valuable event that can help reinforce the importance of good sleep on society. After all, poor sleep and sleep disorders, such as insomnia, can cost society a lot of money. And although sleep medicine is an actual branch of medicine, most sleep disorders are treated by doctors and nurses who were not trained in “sleep”.

So, until people—and society—begin to treat “good sleep” with respect, events, such as Sleep Awareness Week, can help educate the public on the benefits of embracing a reasonable bedtime and good sleep hygiene.
