Silk & Snow Hybrid Mattress Overview

Silk & Snow is an online “bed-in-a-box” mattress brand based in Canada. The company has been in business since 2017. In this review, we’ll take a closer look at the newest Silk & Snow mattress model: the S&S Hybrid.

The S&S Hybrid is constructed with a top layer of quilted, gel-infused polyfoam over a transitional layer of low-density memory foam. The mattress has a medium firm feel that rates as a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale, so sleepers should expect noticeable contouring from the foam layers. The support core consists of pocketed coils arranged in a zoned configuration with thicker coils reinforcing the chest, stomach, and back while thinner coils cradle lighter areas of the body.

A high-density foam encasement for the coils prevents deep sinkage along the edges. The cover is a polyester and spandex blend infused with silver, which has natural antimicrobial properties to stave off dust mites and other allergens. Altogether the S&S Hybrid stands 12 inches tall, making it a high-profile mattress.

Read on to learn more about the S&S Hybrid in terms of prices and sizes, construction and materials, and performance ratings based on owner experiences and hands-on testing. We’ll also compare the S&S Hybrid to some similar mattress models and give a brief rundown of Silk & Snow’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

  • Sleepers who prefer a balance of contouring and support. The S&S Hybrid conforms more closely than many competing hybrids thanks to its plush, pressure-relieving foams. This creates a feeling akin to both sleeping “in” and sleeping “on” the mattress.
  • People who weigh at least 130 pounds. While our lightweight sleep testers felt reasonably comfortable on the S&S Hybrid, the best ratings for this mattress come from average weight and heavyweight individuals.
  • Hot sleepers. Although the foams may trap heat for some, steady air circulation through the coil system helps the mattress maintain a comfortable core temperature.
  • Value seekers. Compared to other hybrid models, the S&S Hybrid is very affordable.

Not Recommended for...

  • Those who would rather sleep on a very responsive bed. The S&S Hybrid’s coils create some bounciness on the surface, but the mattress is less springy than many competing innersprings and hybrids.
  • Sleepers who prefer a soft or medium soft feel. Some people will find the S&S Hybrid’s medium firm feel a bit too stiff, and they may experience discomfort as a result.
  • Lightweight side sleepers. Since this sleeper group often requires more cushioning and body-hugging, we recommend a softer mattress instead.

How Is the Silk & Snow S&S Hybrid Constructed?

Cover

The S&S Hybrid’s cover is crafted from a blend of polyester and spandex that has a very soft and stretchy feel. The fabric is also infused with silver fibers. Silver has antimicrobial properties, so this infusion can help prevent dust mites, mold, and other allergens from infiltrating the mattress (a common problem with coil mattresses).

The cover cannot be removed or laundered in a household machine. If spills occur, Silk & Snow recommends spot cleaning with cold water.

Comfort Layers

The S&S Hybrid contains a top 1-inch comfort layer of quilted, gel-infused polyfoam. This material conforms and cushions much like memory foam, but it won’t respond as slowly to the body. This creates a light bounce on the surface whenever sleepers get in and out of bed or shift positions.

A 3-inch comfort layer of 3 PCF low-density memory foam lies beneath the polyfoam layer. This material provides moderate and even contouring as the sleeper’s body settles into the mattress. The memory foam also acts as a transitional layer of sorts by preventing sleepers from sinking too deeply and coming into contact with the dense coil system.

Support Layers

The S&S Hybrid’s support core consists of individually pocketed coils. Depending on the selected size, this layer may contain anywhere from 720 to 1,201 coils. The support core is zoned to deliver enhanced support for the sleeper’s body. Thicker coils are positioned beneath the midsection, where most people carry the majority of their body weight, while thinner coils offer more cradling for the head, neck, shoulders, and legs.

The coils are also encased in a buffer of high-density foam. This provides added reinforcement for the perimeter, so owners sink less when they get in and out of bed and also feel more secure lying near the edges of the mattress.

Mattress Height

The S&S Hybrid measures 12 inches thick, making it a high-profile mattress. The above-average height allows room for thick foam comfort layers and a rather robust coil system. As a result, the mattress has a medium firm feel that offers a balance of contouring and support.

Product Name Firmness Level Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components
Silk & Snow S&S Hybrid Medium Firm (6)

Zoned Pocketed Coils 1″ Gel-Infused Polyfoam
3″ 3 PCF Memory Foam
Silver-Infused Polyester and Spandex Blend

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The S&S Hybrid conforms a bit more deeply than many competing hybrids. The mattress has a medium firm feel and shouldn’t sink too much for most people, but with foam comfort layers totalling 4 inches thick, sleepers should expect some noticeable contouring – especially if they weigh 130 pounds or more.

The S&S Hybrid is also somewhat responsive due to its top polyfoam layer and the coil support core. This creates a feeling best described as simultaneously sleeping “in” and sleeping “on” the mattress. Comparatively, many other hybrids are springier on the surface for more of a sleeping “on” feeling.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Now, let’s take an in-depth look at our performance ratings for the S&S Hybrid from Silk & Snow. Each rating listed below is based on a combination of verified owner experiences and hands-on testing from our in-house team.

Durability

The S&S Hybrid was first released to the public in 2018, so we haven’t had the opportunity to evaluate it against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability rating for this model is based on other factors, such as quality of materials and construction, owner experiences, and Silk & Snow’s reputation.

We estimate the S&S Hybrid will perform for about seven years before a replacement is needed. This expected lifespan is on par with the average foam hybrid, as well as the average mattress across all construction types. The coils provide sturdy support thanks to their zoned layout and edge-protecting foam encasement, but over time the foam layers will soften and lose shape, leading to deep body impressions on the surface that affect how comfortable the mattress feels.

Owners can preserve their sleep surface to a degree by rotating their mattress head to foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the S&S Hybrid for motion isolation, we asked two sleep testers to lie next to each other on the mattress. One tester moved around on their side while the other felt for this motion transferring across the surface. The mattress performed fairly well during these tests thanks to its thick foam layers, which absorb movement from sleepers and eliminate quite a bit of transfer.

That said, the coils in this mattress also make the surface somewhat responsive. While the S&S Hybrid proves better-than-average motion isolation, those who share their bed with a partner will probably notice some movement when their co-sleeper gets in and out of bed or changes positions during the night. This may lead to sleep disturbances for those who are highly sensitive to movement in bed.

Off-Gassing

Our testing team noticed some off-gassing odor after unboxing the S&S Hybrid. These smells come from the foam, which emits volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that carry a distinct chemical aroma. The testers checked on the mattress a few days later and found the smells had mostly dissipated. Hybrids like this model often lose their initial odor rather quickly because the coils circulate air to flush out bothersome smells. We don’t anticipate any major odor issues with this mattress.

Pressure Relief

To evaluate the S&S Hybrid for pressure relief, we asked testers in different weight groups to lie down on the mattress with sensors that track pressure buildup throughout the body. They also changed positions to see if pressure increased or decreased while lying on their side, back, or stomach.

The S&S Hybrid is constructed with contouring foam layers and offers a medium firm feel. This makes it well-suited to side sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds. They receive ample cushioning for the shoulders and hips, which promotes even alignment and reduces pressure along the spine. Back and stomach sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds shouldn’t sink too much, resulting in less pressure along the neck, lower back, and hips.

For sleepers in other weight and position groups, the mattress may either feel too stiff and not conform enough or feel too soft and sink excessively – but across most groups, the mattress has earned ratings of good or better.

Temperature Neutrality

The S&S Hybrid sleeps quite cool, as is often the case with hybrids. This can be attributed to a coil system that promotes steady airflow throughout the interior of the mattress, as well as low-density comfort layers that shouldn’t trap too much body heat. Some sleepers – particularly those who weigh more than 230 pounds – may feel a bit too warm as they sink beneath the surface of the mattress, but overall the S&S Hybrid is a good option for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

Our testers evaluated the S&S Hybrid for edge support by sitting along the perimeter of the mattress, as one might do when getting in and out of bed. They also took turns lying near the edges to check for feelings of “roll-off,” which often occur on beds with less reinforcement.

These tests determined that edge support is a key strength of the S&S Hybrid. This is mostly thanks to the high-density foam encasement around the coil system. Most coil mattresses reduce perimeter sinkage quite well, but the addition of this encasement provides even more push-back and reinforcement. None of our testers sank excessively while sitting or lying along the edges, even those in the heavyweight group.

Noise

The S&S Hybrid was mostly silent during our tests, including those that involved movement on the mattress. Pocketed coils tend to be quieter than other coil types, so hybrids in general have lower noise potential than innersprings. However, owners may notice more squeaks and creaks from their S&S Hybrid’s support core as the mattress nears the end of its lifespan.

Sex

The S&S Hybrid is ideal for couples who prefer a balance of conforming and bounciness for sex. The mattress is fairly responsive, which is typical of hybrids, and this makes moving across the surface and changing positions less difficult. The foams also provide good traction when couples want to maintain one position for a longer period of time. Additionally, solid edge support ensures couples can use the entire surface of the mattress, and not just the midsection. The coils are mostly quiet and discreet, as well.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, the Tuck team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

After testing the S&S Hybrid, our sleepers in the lightweight group were a bit divided but they reached a general consensus: the mattress feels a bit too firm. This was especially true for side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds. Side sleepers typically need more cushioning to pad the shoulders and hips, align the spine, and alleviate pressure. Since the S&S Hybrid has a medium firm feel and conforms to a moderate extent, our lightweight side sleepers agreed the surface was too stiff.

Back and stomach sleepers in this weight group felt more comfortable on the S&S Hybrid, but still found it overly firm. These positions require less conditioning and more support from the mattress, but lightweight back and stomach sleepers still need some contouring in order to reduce discomfort in pressure-sensitive areas. These testers gave the mattress a good rating, but agreed a softer feel would have made it more comfortable.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

The most favorable ratings for the S&S Hybrid came from our average weight testing group. Side sleepers received ample padding for the body, which in turn promoted even alignment and minimized pressure to a noticeable extent, but they didn’t sink too deeply around the shoulders and hips thanks to adequate coil reinforcement. Back and stomach sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds agreed with this assessment. They sank very little between the shoulders and hips but the mattress still conformed to a comfortable extent.

A medium firm feel is often best suited to sleepers in the average weight group. People who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds tend to sink excessively on plush surfaces and also find firm mattresses too stiff. For this reason, the medium firm feel can be the best of both worlds.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

As with our lightweight testers, opinions about the mattress from heavyweight testers depended on their sleep position. Side sleepers awarded the highest ratings among testers weighing more than 230 pounds. The foams cushion the body and support the spine without sinking too much – a common issue for side sleepers in this weight group.

Back and stomach sleepers also awarded the mattress satisfactory ratings, but they reported some sagging around the torso, midsection, and hips. This created an even surface for their head, neck, shoulders and legs while the rest of their body sunk more deeply into the foam. This lack of support can lead to aches and pains in different areas of the body. However, none of them noted excessive sinkage.

How Does the S&S Hybrid Compare to Other Beds?

We encourage all mattress shoppers to browse different brands and models in order to find their perfect match. In the next section, we’ll see how the S&S Hybrid compares to the flagship Silk & Snow mattress, as well as some comparable hybrids from competing brands.

S&S Hybrid vs. S&S Mattress

The flagship S&S Mattress from Silk & Snow is an all-foam model constructed with a gel-infused memory foam comfort layer over transitional and support layers of high-density polyfoam. Like the S&S Hybrid, this mattress has a medium firm (6) feel that delivers even, moderate contouring and optimal pressure relief for people in the average weight group.

Since the S&S Mattress does not contain coils, its feel is quite different from the hybrid’s. Sleepers sink more deeply into this mattress and won’t feel nearly as much responsiveness on the surface. This can be a good quality for couples, since the mattress absorbs more motion and isolates transfer better than the S&S Hybrid. However, the S&S Mattress also traps more body heat and sleeps warmer. The edges are also more susceptible to deep sinkage when owners get in and out of bed.

The S&S Mattress is only slightly cheaper than its hybrid counterpart, so pricing probably won’t be a major factor for most shoppers. Instead, buyers should focus on which mattress feel they prefer: the deep cradling of a memory foam mattress or the light bounce of a foam hybrid.

S&S Hybrid vs. Brooklyn Bedding Signature

The Brooklyn Bedding Signature is a hybrid model constructed with two polyfoam layers and a pocketed coil support core. Without memory foam, the Signature won’t hug the body as closely as the S&S Hybrid, and it also feels a bit more responsive on the surface. However, the polyfoam is still fairly adaptive and most sleepers will notice at least some contouring.

Firmness selection is an advantage of the Signature. Customers can choose between three feels for their mattress: soft (3.5), medium (5.5), or firm (7.5). This range should accommodate most shoppers regardless of their body type or preferred sleep position, but people who prefer a solid medium firm feel may want to choose the S&S Hybrid instead. Apart from different feels, these mattresses are quite similar. Both offer above-average conforming and pressure relief compared to other hybrids, and also sleep cool and feel fairly stable along the edges.

The Signature’s price-point is very comparable to the S&S Hybrid’s, so shoppers should choose between these models based on which specific firmness level they prefer. It’s also worth noting that only Silk & Snow delivers to the lower 48 states and Canadian provinces for free, whereas Brooklyn Bedding’s free delivery only applies to the contiguous U.S.

S&S Hybrid vs. Saatva

The flagship Saatva is an innerspring featuring a padded Euro-top with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers. The mattress also features a pocketed minicoil transitional layer and a recycled steel bonnell coil support core. This coil-on-coil structure makes the mattress quite responsive and supportive.

Like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, the Saatva offers more customization options for customers. These include a medium soft (4), medium firm (6), or firm (7.5) feel, as well as 11.5-inch and 14.5-inch profiles. The Saatva’s medium firm option is comparable to the S&S Hybrid’s feel, but the latter conforms more closely due to its thicker foam layers while the former contours to a very minimal extent. Both mattresses excel at edge support. The Saatva’s dual coil layers provide very strong perimeter reinforcement, while the S&S Hybrid minimizes sinkage with the foam encasement around its support core.

The Saatva costs a bit more than the S&S Hybrid, but Saatva customers in the contiguous U.S. receive free White Glove delivery that includes in-home setup and old mattress removal upon request. Apart from this perk, customers should base their selection on firmness preferences, as well as their desired level of mattress responsiveness.

Read our full Saatva Mattress Review.

S&S Hybrid vs. WinkBed

The WinkBed is a luxury hybrid mattress. Standard WinkBed models are designed with layers of gel polyfoam and foam-encased minicoils over a support core of pocketed coils, creating a responsive coil-on-coil feel similar to the Saatva’s. The standard WinkBed is available with a medium soft (4.5), medium firm (6.5), or firm (7.5) feel. Additionally, the WinkBed Plus adds a thick latex comfort layer to give the mattress a very firm (8) feel. The WinkBed Plus is specifically designed for heavier individuals.

Both the WinkBed and S&S Hybrid feature zoned pocketed coils, so edge support is a shared strength of these beds. Temperature neutrality is another asset. The WinkBed’s wider firmness and design selection makes it suitable for different sleepers based on body type and normal position, but the S&S Hybrid is well-equipped for most people who weigh at least 130 pounds.

WinkBeds only ships within the contiguous U.S., so customers in Canada, Alaska, or Hawaii will be limited to the S&S Hybrid. The WinkBed also costs considerably more – especially the WinkBed Plus – so the S&S Hybrid is better suited to shoppers on a budget.
