Quick Summary – Saatva vs. Purple

Saatva first launched in 2011. The brand’s flagship bed, the Saatva, is coil-on-coil innerspring mattress with a foam-padded Euro-top cover, followed by polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers and a pocketed coil transitional layer. The support core is constructed with steel bonnell coils. The Saatva is available in 11 1/2 inch and 14 1/2 inch thickness profiles, as well as three different firmness settings: ‘Medium Soft’ (4), ‘Medium Firm’ (6), and ‘Firm’ (7.5).

Purple was established in 2015. The company currently sells one hybrid mattress, the New Purple, which first appeared in 2018. The New Purple features the brand’s signature Smart Grid, a comfort layer system made of buckling-column gel distributed over elastic polymer grid. Its support core is constructed with pocketed coils. The New Purple is available in three profiles, and each one has a different firmness setting. The 11-inch New Purple. 2 model is ‘Medium Firm’ (6.5), the 12-inch New Purple. 3 model is ‘Medium’ (5.5), and the 13-inch New Purple. 4 model is ‘Medium Soft’ (4.5).

Please note: Both brands offer additional mattress models. Saatva sells four other beds: the Saatva HD coil-on-coil innerspring designed for heavier individuals, the Loom & Leaf  luxury memory foam mattress, the Zenhaven flippable latex mattress, and the Solaire adjustable airbed. Purple also offers the Original Purple, a flagship mattress featuring the Smart Grid comfort layer and a high-density polyfoam base.

Sleep Rating

Durability
Fair

Most innerspring mattresses last between six and seven years, and Saatva mattresses seem to be on par with this lifespan. However, Euro-top construction is generally linked to below-average durability.

Motion Isolation
Fair

Like other innersprings, the Saatva mattress does not absorb or minimize motion to a significant extent. This may be problematic for certain sleepers, such as couples who share a bed, since minimal motion isolation can lead to sleep disruptions.

Conforming
Good

Saatva features coil-on-coil construction and memory foam in the comfort layer. This allows the mattress to conform more closely and relieve pressure to a greater extent than many competing innersprings — but all-foam and latex mattresses are considered the best option for sleepers that prefer close conforming and targeted pressure relief.

Sex
Very Good

The Saatva mattress is highly responsive and fairly bouncy, although the ‘Plush Soft’ and ‘Luxury Firm’ designs tend to be better for sex than the ‘Firm’.

Temperature Neutrality
Very Good

Mattresses that contain foam and memory foam tend to sleep the hottest. Saatva has a more traditional innerspring construction so our testing along with data analysis show that it's one of the cooler mattress options on the market today compared to all-foam competitors.

Off-gassing
Good

The Saatva mattress emits some off-gassing (due in part to the polyfoam and memory foam layers), but most owners report that the odors dissipate within three to five days of unpackaging the mattress.

Edge Support
Very Good

Innerspring mattresses tend to have optimal edge support and the Saatva is no exception. Customers report a consistent sleep surface (no-roll off when sleeping towards the edge) as well as above-average push back when sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Noise
Good

Roughly 7% of Saatva owners cite noise as a complaint. This is on par with noise complaints from all innerspring owners.

Sleep Rating

Durability
Good

The hyper-elastic polymer on top of pocketed coils and the reinforced perimeter make for a highly durable bed. Our testing found it should offer above-standard durability.

Motion Isolation
Very Good

New Purple owners find the bed entirely removes any movement from a partner and our own testing procedure backs this up.

Conforming
Very Good

The Smart Grid system is designed to conform to your body's profile and owners report feeling supported. Points of pressure are reduced with the New Purple.

Sex
Very Good

As a very responsive mattress, the New Purple offers good bounce back that you'll find suitable for amorous activity

Temperature Neutrality
Excellent

Customer data shows the New Purple disperses body heat very effectively. The Tuck testing lab shows sleepers remain cool on the bed.

Off-gassing
Very Good

Customers do not report any issues with off-gassing and our testing showed this to be true.

Edge Support
Good

The reinforced perimeter offers solid edge support, whether you are sleeping or sitting near the edge of the bed.

Noise
Very Good

There are no complaints of noise with the New Purple, nor did our testing show any issues.

How is the Saatva built?

The Saatva has a sophisticated design that distinguishes it from many competing innersprings. In addition to a foam-padded Euro-top cover, the mattress has polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers and a pocketed coil transitional layer. These components cradle the sleeper’s body and alleviate aches and pains in their most sensitive areas. The support core consists of durable, steel-tempered bonnell coils that reinforce the bed well, and help prevent sagging and sinkage along the edges.

The Saatva offers great temperature neutrality, even by innerspring standards. Air flows freely through both coil layers, which cools off the interior of the bed and regulates the surface temperature. The breathable organic cotton cover can be beneficial for hot sleepers, as well. The Saatva is also highly responsive, making it good for sex, and its noise potential is lower than average.

How is the New Purple built?

The New Purple’s Smart Grid comfort system consists of buckling-column gel distributed evenly over an elastic polymer grid. This material conforms to the sleeper’s body and alleviates discomfort much like memory foam or latex, but the polymer grid is highly durable and not as susceptible to sagging or sinkage. The Smart Grid’s thickness ranges from 2 to 4 inches, depending on the selected firmness/profile. The mattress also has a support core made from durable, relatively quiet pocketed coils.

The New Purple is an excellent choice for those who normally sleep hot. The grid does not retain as much heat as foam and should sleep fairly cool, while strong airflow through the coil layer also helps keep the bed at a comfortable sleep temperature. The New Purple also isolates more motion transfer than the average hybrid, making it suitable for couples who awaken easily due to movement or noise.

Saatva Sleeper Ratings

The Saatva is available in three firmness settings ranging from ‘Medium Soft’ to ‘Firm,’ as well as 11 1/2 inch and 14 1/2 inch profiles. This range should accommodate most sleepers regardless of their weight or preferred sleep position. Lighter side sleepers can opt for the softest setting, which cradles the hips and shoulders for better spinal alignment, while heavier back and stomach sleepers receive even, sag-free support from the firmer, thicker designs.

New Purple Sleeper Ratings

The New Purple offers firmness settings ranging from ‘Medium Soft’ to ‘Medium Firm.’ This range is optimal for side and back sleepers who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds, as well as heavier people – including stomach sleepers – who prefer softer surfaces and lighter side sleepers seeking better spinal alignment. The thicker-than-average profile options for the New Purple can also be beneficial to heavier people, who often struggle getting on and off low-profile mattresses.
