Puffy vs. Tuft & Needle – Our 2022 Mattress Comparison Guide

Written by Tuck Staff

The Bottom Line.

  • Both the Puffy and the T&N Mattress are polyfoam-based mattress, but the Puffy is medium while the T&N is medium-firm.
  • The T&N features a comfort layer with gel and graphite infusions.
  • The Puffy is ideal for sleepers under 230 lbs, while the T&N is a good choice for back sleepers regardless of their weight.

Puffy Mattress vs. T&N Mattress Overview

Puffy Mattress vs. T&N Mattress Overview

Puffy, which launched in 2017, offers two models: the premium Puffy Lux, and their flagship Puffy Mattress. The latter is a true medium-firmness (5 out of 10) mattress which features temperature-regulating comfort layers. The first is made from 2 inches of temperature-resistant polyfoam, and the second is 2 inches of gel foam. Both rest on a 6-inch support core of high-density polyfoam.

Despite the Puffy’s medium firmness level, it offers superb contouring and softness due to using softer-than-average foams in the comfort layers. Sleepers under 230 lbs. will enjoy this combination of support and comfort, though those who weigh more than 230 lbs. may find with time that the Puffy lacks the support they need.

Tuft & Needle was founded in 2012 and sells two mattresses, one of which is the flagship T&N Mattress. This mattress has a price point which is significantly lower than some of its competitors. It offers a medium-firm (6.5 out of 10) resilience which has ideal support for back sleepers, particularly those below 130 lbs. or above 230 lbs.

The support core is 7 inches of high-density polyfoam, and the comfort layer is 3 inches of polyfoam which they have infused with gel and graphite (charcoal). Both infusions are intended to improve the mattress’s heat neutrality, and our testing has found that the T&N Mattress does indeed sleep relatively cool.

Sleep Position Ratings

The Puffy Mattress

Due to its incredibly soft-feeling comfort layers, as well as its true medium (5 out of 10) firmness level, the Puffy Mattress tends to be extremely comfortable for all sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs. This is particularly true for side sleepers who weigh less than 130 lbs, who will find that the mattress supports the curve of their spine while cradling their joints and pressure points.

People who weigh more than 230 lbs, however, may find that the Puffy lacks the support they need for a comfortable sleep. Because of this, we have rated the Puffy as “fair” for sleepers above 230 lbs, and as “good” or “very good” for those under this weight.

The T&N Mattress

The T&N Mattress is most likely to appeal to back-sleepers, particularly those below 130 lbs. and those above 230 lbs. It offers proper spinal alignment in this position, combined with enough contouring to cradle any potential pressure areas. Side sleepers between 130 lbs. and 230 lbs. will also find that this mattress has the right combination of softness and support.

However, all sleepers above 130 lbs. will find that the T&N offers a good night’s sleep. Side and stomach sleepers below 130 lbs. are more likely to find this mattress too firm despite the 3-inch polyfoam comfort layer.

Our Recommendations

Choose the Puffy Mattress if...

  • You need a contouring mattress for joint pain
  • You weigh less than 230 lbs. and want a medium firmness mattress
  • You are a side sleeper under 130 lbs
  • You like highly-contouring, soft-feel mattresses

Choose the T&N Mattress if...

  • You’re looking for an affordable, cool-sleeping polyfoam mattress
  • You sleep on your back
  • You sleep on your side or stomach and weigh more than 130 lbs
  • You need close contouring and conforming for pain relief

How Is the Puffy Mattress Built?

If you’re concerned about the chemicals used in memory foam, rest easy knowing that Puffy only uses materials which are CertiPUR-US®-Certified to be free of carcinogens and toxins. The Puffy Mattress has a 10-inch profile (the same as the T&N Mattress) and is based on a 6-inch support core of high-density polyfoam.

This core allows for a medium (5 out of 10) firmness level, which is appealing to many sleep types. The two 2-inch comfort layers are made of softer-than-average foams, allowing for excellent contouring while still retaining enough support for sleepers who weigh less than 230 lbs. One comfort layer is a temperature-resistant polyfoam, while the other is a gel memory foam with temperature-regulating properties.

Instead of using an integrated cover like many other mattresses, Puffy has a zip-off polyester cover which can be removed and washed as needed. To prevent you from having to do this too often, it is also stain-resistant.

How Is the T&N Mattress Built?

Like the Puffy, the T&N Mattress uses only materials which have been CertiPUR-US®-Certified as toxin-free and carcinogen-free. Its 10-inch profile comes from two layers: a 7-inch support core, and a 3-inch comfort layer. The support core provides a medium-firm (6.5 out of 10) feel, making it a good fit for back-sleepers.

Tuft & Needle has chosen to infuse the comfort layer with graphite and gel, making it less likely to retain heat and allowing for greater temperature neutrality. The comfort layer also has better contouring qualities than some other polyfoam options, allowing it to conform closely to the body for joint and pressure point relief.

Due to the T&N’s thick support core and medium-firm firmness level, it can feel harder than some other options despite its comfort layer. This means it may not be the right choice for side and stomach sleepers below 130 lbs.

At any point during this period you can return your mattress for a full refund, minus any shipping fees. However, it does take approximately 30 days to become accustomed to any new mattress. Because of this, Puffy encourages customers to wait out the month before making a decision.

If you do decide to return your Puffy mattress, there are no pick-up fees. Puffy will work with your local facilities to donate your used mattress.

  • Warranty

    Puffy offers a lifetime warranty.

For the first ten years of your warranty, Puffy will either repair or replace your mattress if it develops any of the covered problems. These include indentations over 1.5 inches, sagging of more than 1.5 inches, a cracked zipper, or unraveling of the cover.

After ten years they will still be happy to do so, but you will also have the option of a 50% discount on a new mattress. If you choose this “Quick Sleep” option, you can keep your previous mattress as well. The warranty does not cover ordinary changes, owner damage, or wear-and-tear. It is non-transferrable and is void if you do not support your mattress correctly.

Like Puffy, Tuft & Needle encourages you to wait out the 30-day break-in period, but you are also free to begin the return process at any point during your trial. If you do decide against keeping the T&N, you will receive a full refund on the cost of your mattress, though not any shipping fees.

You may also choose instead to upgrade to the newer Mint Mattress by paying the difference ($400 for a Queen). Tuft & Needle encourages you to donate your used mattress locally, but they will also arrange to pick up your mattress and do not charge a fee for this service. • Warranty

Tuft & Needle offers a 10-year non prorated warranty

Tuft & Needle will, at its sole option, replace or repair your mattress during the warranty period if it develops one of the covered problems. These are visible sagging or indentations greater than three quarters of an inch, production flaws which cause the foam to split or crack, and manufacturing defects in the cover which cause unraveling or tearing.

Normal use, owner damage (such as burns, stains, and tears), and ordinary changes to the foam (such as minor softening) are not covered. The warranty becomes void if your mattress is not given a proper foundation for support, as the T&N mattress is intended to work with some kind of bed base and improper support can cause structural damage to the mattress. You cannot transfer the warranty if you sell or give away your mattress.
