Parachute Mattress Review

Written by Tuck Staff

Parachute Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The Parachute Mattress is a luxury hybrid built with four individual coil layers for enhanced support throughout the sleeper’s body.
  • A responsive, medium-firm feel best suited to heavier people.
  • The mattress offers very good temperature neutrality thanks to a breathable wool layer and strong airflow through the coils.

Parachute Mattress Overview

Parachute Mattress Overview

Parachute is a U.S.-based mattress and bedding accessory brand best known for products containing sustainably sourced materials. This review will focus on the company’s flagship bed, the Parachute Mattress, which is also known as ‘The Mattress.’

The Parachute Mattress is a hybrid model. Unlike most competing hybrids, which contain foam and/or latex comfort layers, the Parachute Mattress is constructed with a top comfort layer of pure New Zealand wool, followed by three tiers of pocketed minicoils.

The support core contains pocketed coils zoned arranged in different gauges, or thicknesses, to provide targeted support to the sleeper’s shoulders, back, and hips. Altogether, the mattress measures 13 inches thick. It is considered medium-firm, which corresponds to a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Read on to learn all about the Parachute Mattress in terms of construction, pricing, and overall performance. This review will also compare the mattress to a few similarly constructed models from other brands, and give a brief overview of Parachute’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

  • Sleepers who prefer very responsive mattresses. The Parachute Mattress contains four individual coil layers, creating an exceptionally springy and responsive sleep surface.
  • People who weigh at least 130 pounds. Due to its supportive, medium-firm feel, the Parachute Mattress is best suited to average weight and heavyweight sleepers.
  • Hot sleepers. The Parachute Mattress sleeps exceptionally cool due to its comfort layer of breathable moisture-wicking natural wool and steady airflow through all four coil layers.

Not Recommended for...

  • Sleepers who prefer mattresses that conform closely. The Parachute Mattress provides little to no body-conforming, as the wool comfort layer does not contour to the sleeper like memory foam or latex.
  • Lightweight individuals. After testing the mattress, we’ve found the Parachute Mattress will likely be too firm for people weighing less than 130 pounds.
  • Shoppers on a budget. The Parachute Mattress is fairly pricey for a hybrid model.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Parachute Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

As you can see, the Parachute Mattress earned positive ratings in some categories but did not do as well in others. For a detailed look at each performance rating, check out our full breakdown below.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Parachute Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

How Is the Parachute Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The mattress has a quilted cover made of 100 percent organic cotton. The material has an exceptionally soft and breathable feel. Parachute recommends spot-cleaning as needed if stains occur.

Comfort Layers

The Parachute Mattress has a top comfort layer of pure, natural wool from New Zealand. This component gives the mattress a unique feel compared to other hybrid models. The wool cushions the sleeper very well, but does not conform to the body like memory foam or latex.

Beneath the wool layer, the mattress contains three tiers of pocketed coils. These coils provide added support without feeling too firm or stiff, resulting in even weight distribution for sleepers.

Transitional Layer

A transitional wool layer rests between the pocketed minicoil tiers and the support core. This layer acts as a cushioning barrier, and prevents the coils from coming into contact with one another.

Support Layers

The Parachute Mattress has a support core composed of pocketed coils. The coils are zoned with different gauges, or thicknesses, throughout the layer. Thicker, low-gauge coils reinforce the sleeper’s shoulders, back, and hips, while thinner, high-gauge coils cradle the head, neck, and legs.

The mattress also has a base layer made from wool. This layer provides a barrier between the support coils and the bed frame. Because the wool is flame-resistant, the material also serves as an additional fire barrier.

Mattress Height

The Parachute Mattress measures 13 inches thick, making it a high-profile model. The bed forgos more conventional comfort layer materials, such as foam or latex, for wool batting and three minicoil tiers over the pocketed coil base. As a result, the mattress feels very supportive and responsive, but sleepers do not experience much body-conforming or pressure relief.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

Many competing hybrids are constructed with foam and/or latex comfort layers, along with pocketed coil support cores. These mattresses typically offer a balance of body-conforming and even support.

The Parachute Mattress has a very different feel compared to other hybrid models. Due to its wool comfort layer, the mattress does not conform very much to the sleeper’s body, and the coil-on-coil construction gives the bed exceptional responsiveness.

For these reasons, many liken the Parachute Mattress to more traditional innerspring models. Sleepers do not sink into the surface, creating a floating feeling of lying “on” – as opposed to “in” – the mattress.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Parachute Mattress. Each rating is based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as experiences from verified Parachute owners.

Durability

The Parachute Mattress was introduced in 2019. We have not had enough time to test this model against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Therefore, our durability rating for the mattress is based on quality of materials and construction, owner experiences, and Parachute’s overall reputation.

We estimate the Parachute Mattress will perform for about seven and a half years before a replacement is needed. This expected lifespan is longer than average compared to other hybrids. This is due to the bed’s sturdy coil-on-coil design. The four coil layers reinforce the sleep surface against sagging, and also minimize sinkage along the edges of the mattress.

Additionally, the Parachute Mattress has a comfort layer made of natural wool batting. This material is very durable, and will not deteriorate or develop body impressions like mattress foam. Owners can further preserve their Parachute Mattress and prevent deep impressions from forming by rotating the bed head-to-foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Parachute Mattress for motion isolation, we asked two sleep testers to lie side-by-side on the mattress. One tester moved around while the other felt for motion transferring across the surface. During this test, the Parachute Mattress exhibited fair motion isolation. The mattress is very responsive due to its coil-on-coil design, and the wool comfort layer does not absorb movement like foam.

As a result, people who awaken easily due to their partner’s movements may experience sleep disruptions on the Parachute Mattress.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noticed faint odor when unboxing the Parachute Mattress. However, these smells had completely dissipated when they re-evaluated the mattress a few days later. The bed’s coil layers promote steady airflow to clear out unwanted smells, and the wool emits less odor than foam or latex. We do not foresee any major, odor-related issues with this mattress.

Pressure Relief

To evaluate the Parachute Mattress for pressure relief, our testers took turns lying on a sensory pad that monitors pressure build-up in the shoulders, hips, and other sensitive areas of the body. They also shifted positions to see if pressure increased on their sides, back, or stomach.

All of the testers experienced minimal pressure relief on the mattress. The wool comfort layer cushions sleepers fairly well, but it does not conform to the body like memory foam or polyfoam. People with pressure point issues may want to consider a mattress with different comfort layer materials.

Temperature Neutrality

Temperature neutrality is a key strength of the Parachute Mattress, and this can be attributed to its material composition. The wool comfort layer is exceptionally breathable, and the material has moisture-wicking properties to keep sleepers dry. The coil layers also promote strong airflow to help the mattress maintain a comfortable temperature.

Edge Support

To evaluate the Parachute Mattress for edge support, our testers sat along the perimeter as owners might do when getting in and out of bed. All of our testers – even those who weigh more than 230 pounds – noted little to no sinkage. The bed’s four coil layers provide excellent reinforcement to the perimeter, and over time this should minimize deep compression.

The testers also took turns lying near the edges to check for feelings of “roll-off.” Again, the bed’s coils provide excellent stability for sleepers and all of the testers felt very secure, even when changing sleep positions.

Noise

Compared to other hybrid models, the Parachute Mattress is somewhat loud and prone to squeaking. Coil-on-coil hybrids often produce more noise than their counterparts with one coil layer, and this model is no exception. Owners are likely to experience sleep disruptions on the Parachute Mattress, especially if they easily awaken due to noise.

Sex

For many couples, the Parachute Mattress will be ideal for sex. Four coil layers ensure a very responsive feel, which allows couples to use the entire surface of the bed and change positions easily. The wool comfort layer also provides good padding for their bodies, and offers some traction without sinking too deeply.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depends on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, our team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Among our lightweight testers, the Parachute Mattress earned the best ratings from stomach sleepers. The bed’s sturdy coil-on-coil design prevents stomach sleepers from sinking too deeply and keeps them on an even plane. Other sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds found the mattress too firm.

Side sleepers noted very little padding for their shoulders and hips, and did not experience even spinal alignment. For back sleepers, the mattress did not conform closely enough.

Lightweight sleepers generally prefer mattresses with soft to medium-soft feels. These beds contour more closely to the body for more pressure relief and better alignment. The Parachute Mattress is medium-firm and does not conform very much. As a result, lightweight individuals will likely find the bed uncomfortable and excessively firm.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Our average weight testers gave the Parachute Mattress good ratings across different sleep positions. Side sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds did not experience much conforming, but the wool comfort layer provided some padding for their bodies and they reported less pressure. Average weight back and stomach sleepers also noted strong support, particularly around the lower back and hips.

Medium-soft to medium-firm mattresses are often ideal for sleepers in the average weight group. They are less prone to sagging than softer beds but offer more cushioning for the body than firmer ones. The Parachute Mattress may still be a bit too firm for some average weight sleepers, but it is well suited to those seeking exceptional support from their mattress.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Our back and stomach sleepers in the heavyweight group felt very comfortable on the Parachute Mattress, and this is thanks to its sturdy coil-on-coil support system. The bed sagged very little and maintained even support. Comparatively, many competing hybrids are too soft and prone to deep sagging for heavier back and stomach sleepers.

Side sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds also gave the mattress a good rating, but still noted minimal cushioning for their shoulders and hips. Side sleepers – regardless of body weight – tend to prefer mattresses that conform to the body, even if the contouring is minimal. Based on our assessments, we believe most side sleepers will feel more comfortable on hybrid and all-foam mattresses that offer closer conforming.

How Does the Parachute Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

We encourage all mattress shoppers to compare different brands and models in order to determine their most suitable option. In the next section, we’ll see how the Parachute Mattress stacks up to some similarly constructed innersprings and hybrids from competing brands.

Parachute Mattress vs. Avocado Green

The Avocado Green is a luxury hybrid made with natural wool and organic latex comfort layers, along with thick pocketed coils in the support core. Customers can choose from a medium-firm design with a pillow-top layer for added padding, or a firm model with no pillow-top.

Like the Parachute Mattress, the Avocado Green offers exceptional temperature neutrality thanks to its moisture-wicking wool layer and strong airflow through the coil layers. The latex is also ventilated for extra breathability.

Edge support is another strong point, as the pocketed coils reinforce the perimeter against sinkage. The Avocado Green isolates more motion and produces less noise than the Parachute Mattress, making it better suited to couples.

The Parachute Mattress costs more than both Avocado Green models. The Avocado Green is a good option for sleepers who like the responsive feel of a latex hybrid but also prefer some body-conforming, while the Parachute Mattress is better for those who like very little contouring.

Parachute Mattress vs. Boll & Branch Mattress

The Boll & Branch Mattress shares a very similar design with the Parachute Mattress. Its comfort materials include a wool batting and polyester blend, followed by two layers of latex and a transitional layer of minicoils. The support core consists of pocketed coils, and this coil-on-coil design makes the Boll & Branch Mattress very responsive.

The Boll & Branch Mattress is also medium-firm, but slightly softer than the Parachute Mattress. Its latex layers also provide more conforming, making the mattress better for sleepers in the average weight group – back and stomach sleepers in particular. These two mattresses have earned more comparable ratings in other performance categories, such as temperature neutrality, responsiveness for sex, and edge support.

The Boll & Branch has a much higher price-point, though customers qualify for free White Glove delivery that includes in-home assembly and old mattress removal. For Parachute customers, this service is available for an additional $150.

The Boll & Branch Mattress is optimal for sleepers weighing more than 130 pounds who prefer a balance of body-conforming and responsiveness, whereas those who want more support and less contouring should opt for the Parachute Mattress instead.

Parachute Mattress vs. Brentwood Home Oceano

Another coil-on-coil model, the Brentwood Home Oceano features comfort layers of organic wool batting, gel-infused memory foam, and pocketed minicoils. These components give the mattress a medium-firm feel and alleviate pressure very well, particularly for side and back sleepers.

The Oceano isolates motion better than the Parachute Mattress due to its foam comfort layer. However, it is also more susceptible to sinkage along the edges and does not offer the same level of responsiveness for sex. One similarity these mattresses share is very good temperature neutrality, which can be attributed to moisture-wicking wool layers and strong airflow through the coil systems.

The Oceano costs a bit less than the Parachute Mattress, making it a high-value pick compared to other hybrids. We recommend the Oceano to sleepers who prefer a balance of body-conforming and even support, while the Parachute Mattress is better suited to those who want a more responsive mattress that does not contour as much.

Parachute Mattress vs. DreamCloud

The DreamCloud is a luxury hybrid mattress constructed with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers, along with a pocketed coil support core. The mattress has a medium-firm feel and conforms a bit, making it best suited to those who weigh at least 130 pounds.

The Parachute Mattress outperforms the DreamCloud in terms of edge support. The former reinforces the perimeter with four coil layers that withstand compression and minimize sagging, while the DreamCloud sinks somewhat deeply when owners sit along the edges. That said, the DreamCloud isolates motion fairly well and alleviates pressure for most average weight and heavyweight individuals.

The DreamCloud is very inexpensive for a hybrid and costs much less than the Parachute Mattress. Sleepers who prefer a more responsive, traditional innerspring feel will likely find the Parachute Mattress more comfortable, but the DreamCloud is a better choice for those who like the balanced feel of more conventional hybrid models.

Parachute Mattress vs. Saatva

The Saatva is a coil-on-coil innerspring built with polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers, a pocketed minicoil transitional layer, and recycled steel bonnell coils in the support core. Like the Parachute Mattress, the Saatva is exceptionally responsive and well suited for sex. It also promotes steady airflow through its coil layers to ensure consistent temperature neutrality.

Saatva customers can choose from medium-soft, medium-firm, and firm designs for their mattress, along with 11.5-inch or 14.5-inch profiles. This selection ensures most sleepers can find a suitable option regardless of their firmness or profile preferences. By comparison, the Parachute Mattress may be more limiting because it is only available with one firmness and profile option.

The Saatva costs considerably less than the Parachute Mattress. Additionally, Saatva customers qualify for free White Glove delivery anywhere in the contiguous U.S. The Parachute Mattress is best suited to sleepers who don’t require much conforming and prefer more support, while the Saatva is a good option for those who like a balance of both.

Read our full Saatva Mattress Review here.

Parachute Mattress vs. The WinkBed

Like the Saatva, the WinkBed is a coil-on-coil innerspring available in medium-soft, medium-firm, and firm designs. Customers may also select the WinkBed Plus, a firmer model specifically designed for heavier individuals. All versions of the WinkBed include a compressed-cotton lumbar pad, which provides targeted support to the sleeper’s lower back.

The Parachute Mattress and the WinkBed both have zoned coil systems for enhanced support for the sleeper’s body and excellent reinforcement around the edges. Temperature neutrality is another key strength of both models thanks to strong airflow through their coil layers. However, the WinkBed’s broader firmness selection accommodates a wider range of sleepers in terms of body type, sleep position, and comfort preferences.

The WinkBed and WinkBed Plus cost slightly less than the Parachute Mattress. We recommend the Parachute Mattress to sleepers who want a responsive, medium-firm mattress that conforms very little. The WinkBed, on the other hand, is better suited to those who want more conforming and/or a different firmness level.
