Nest Bedding Latex Mattress Review

Written by Tuck Staff

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The Nest Bedding Latex Mattress, available in medium and firm options, provides excellent support to stomach and back sleepers.
  • This mattress sleeps much cooler than most competing beds.
  • Because of the durable nature of latex, this bed could last several years longer than the average mattress.

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress Overview

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress Overview

The Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress is one of six mattresses offered by the company. Nest Bedding sells two all-foam beds, a hybrid, two latex hybrids, and the All Latex Mattress.

Customers can choose between Natural Latex – also known as the “Finch” – and Certified Organic Latex options. The Certified Organic option is produced without the use of pesticides and costs over twice as much as the Finch at all sizes. The Finch option contains a foam comfort layer, so it feels a bit more conforming. Overall, both mattress options feel more responsive than most all-foam beds.

The Finch bed comes in medium (5) and firm (7) firmness options. The Certified Organic option allows customers to switch between firmness levels by opening the cover and rearranging latex layers. Those who order king or California king sizes of the Finch can choose a firmness level on each side of the bed. Couples of different body weights that share a mattress will benefit from having two firmness levels in one bed.

In this review, we take an in-depth look at the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress. We cover its construction, cost, performance, and associated policies. We also compare it to similar mattresses, so you can choose which bed is best for you.

  • Couples who share a bed. This mattress is virtually silent, so a sleep partner’s movements won’t produce sound. Also, the bed is available in split firmness options, which allow each sleeper to have their own firmness level.
  • Stomach sleepers. This mattress excels at supporting stomach sleepers, regardless of their body weight.
  • Sleepers over 230 pounds. The firm firmness option provides enough support for heavier sleepers of any sleep position preference.
  • People who sleep hot. This mattress sleeps exceptionally cool, so sleepers won’t wake up sweaty like they might on other beds.

Not Recommended for...

  • People wanting a deeply conforming mattress. This bed has a responsive feel, and won’t “hug” the body the way many memory foam mattresses do.

Ratings Summary

Tuck’s testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

In our testing, the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress performed exceptionally well with heavyweight sleepers and stomach sleepers of all body weights. The bed also excelled at keeping sleepers cool and was virtually silent in response to movement.

Check out our in-depth ratings below.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

How Is the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress Constructed?

Cover

Both the Finch and Certified Organic All Latex Mattresses have an organic cotton cover.

The Certified Organic mattress cover is GOTS-certified. It is unzippable and fully removable, which allows customers to wash it.

The Finch cover is organic, but not GOTS-certified. The cover may be unzipped so customers can rearrange or trade out comfort layers, but it isn’t completely removable or washable.

Comfort Layers

The Finch contains two comfort layers. Medium density (1.5 PCF) Eco-Flex quilting foam makes up the uppermost comfort layer, which measures 1.5 inches thick. This foam layer gives the Finch more of a conforming feel than the Certified Organic All Latex Mattress.

The second comfort layer of the Finch measures 3 inches thick and consists of continuous pour Dunlop latex. The ILD of this layer is 27 in the medium firmness option and 36 in the firm option. The higher the ILD, the less conforming the latex layer.

The Certified Organic All Latex Mattress also contains two comfort layers. The top comfort layer in this bed is 1 inch of certified organic wool batting. Wool is known for being breathable and helping regulate body temperature. Wool is also a natural fire retardant and allows manufacturers to skip the addition of chemical fire retardants.

Below the wool layer lies 3 inches of GOLS-certified Dunlop latex. This layer adds to the responsive feel of the Certified Organic All Latex Mattress.

In the Certified Organic Mattress, customers have the option of choosing which latex layer operates as a comfort layer, and which operates as a support layer. When the softer latex layer is on top, the mattress’s firmness measures medium, or 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale. When the firmer latex layer is on top, the firmness level increases to 7 out of 10, or firm.

Support Layers

The Finch contains a 6-inch support core made of encased pieces of 36 ILD Dunlop latex. This support layer gives the bed its firmness and keeps sleepers from feeling like they are sinking into the bed.

The Certified Organic All Latex Mattress gives customers the option of determining which layer they want to use as a support core. When the 6-inch layer of GOLS-certified Dunlop latex is on the bottom, the bed measures medium (5) on the firmness scale. When the 3-inch layer of GOLS-certified Dunlop latex is used as a support layer and the firmer layer is above it, the bed measures firm (7) on the firmness scale.

Mattress Height

The Finch of the Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress measures 10.5 inches in height, and the Certified Organic option measures 10 inches. Both of these heights are considered average and will work with standard sheet sets.

In the Finch, 10.5 inches provides enough space for a 1.5-inch Eco-Flex quilting foam layer, a 3-inch continuous pour Dunlop latex layer, and a 6-inch layer of encased pieces of Dunlop latex. In the Certified Organic option, 10 inches allows room for 1 inch of certified organic wool batting, 3 inches of GOLS-certified Dunlop, and 6 inches of firmer GOLS-certified Dunlop.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress comes in two firmness options: medium, or 5 out of 10 on the firmness scale, and firm, or 7 out of 10 on the firmness scale. (On their website, Nest Bedding discusses firmness using a scale that runs opposite to that normally used in the mattress industry. On their scale, lower numbers indicate higher firmness levels.)

With the Finch, customers must choose which firmness level they want, though Nest Bedding will allow them to swap out a comfort level to change that firmness within the 365-night sleep trial. With the Certified Organic option, sleepers can change the firmness level of the bed at any time by switching the order of the latex layers.

In addition to offering two firmness levels, Nest Bedding provides an option of split firmness levels in the same king-sized Finch. Two firmness levels in the same bed mean sleep partners of different weight groups can both enjoy a mattress that fits them well.

Like many latex mattresses, the Nest Bedding All Latex feels responsive. The Finch contains a foam comfort layer that provides a little “hug,” however. Sleepers who prefer a more conforming mattress should opt for the Finch, and those who prefer a more responsive bed should stick with the Certified Organic option.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress. Each rating is based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as experiences from verified Nest Bedding Latex Mattress owners.

Durability

All-latex mattresses are often the most durable of all mattress types. An all-foam bed of comparable quality will last an average of 6-7 years. An all-latex mattress will last eight years, if not more when taken care of properly.

Additionally, all-latex mattresses tend not to degrade or develop body impressions as easily as all-foam and hybrid beds with foam comfort layers. Memory foam is known for developing lasting body impressions over time. Impressions of 1-inch deep often considered normal in foam beds generally do not occur in latex comfort layers.

Motion Isolation

Nest Signature Hybrid Motion Isolation

To assess motion isolation, we had one person lie on the All Latex Mattress while another person moved around on the other side of the bed. We then recorded how much movement the first tester felt. The All Latex Mattress isolated motion well. Although some motion transfer occurred, the sleep tester wasn’t very disturbed by it.

Most sleepers who share a bed won’t be bothered by motion transfer across the Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress. Sleepers who are especially sensitive to their partners’ nighttime movements might prefer a bed with conforming memory foam comfort layers, since they tend to absorb motion the best.

Off-Gassing

Our testing team noticed a slight odor upon unboxing the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress. Most mattresses off-gas volatile organic compounds (VOCs) after being manufactured. This off-gassing is generally accompanied by a smell. The off-gassing odor from the All Latex Mattress dissipated quickly and was virtually undetectable after 24 hours.

Generally, foam mattresses produce the most pronounced off-gassing smell. Latex mattresses like this one have a distinct odor, but it’s usually not as strong as the smell emitted from memory foam and polyfoam. Innerspring and hybrid mattresses tend to produce the least noticeable smell and air out more quickly since they contain space in their coil layers that allow for airflow.

Pressure Relief

motion isolation

To measure pressure relief on the All Latex Mattress, we used a pressure mapping tool connected to a pad that we spread across the top of the bed. The tool allowed us to see exactly how much pressure sleep testers of different sizes experienced in different parts of their bodies while lying on the bed.

The Nest Bedding Latex Mattress is good at relieving pressure, but doesn’t provide the soft, cushiony feel of memory foam. Sleepers don’t have to worry about developing pressure points that can cause discomfort in their joints, especially when sleeping on their stomachs or backs. Some side sleepers might find they don’t have the level of pressure relief or spinal alignment they need, and might prefer a softer, more conforming mattress as a result.

Temperature Neutrality

Our internal and external testers found that the Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress sleeps exceptionally cool. Even people who tend to sleep hot will likely find they don’t feel overly warm or wake up sweating on this mattress.

The bed’s excellent temperature neutrality comes from its use of natural materials. Latex tends to sleep cooler than foam, and the cotton and wool cover materials sleep cooler than synthetic fabrics. As a result, the Certified Organic Latex Mattress will likely sleep a bit cooler than the Finch, since it contains wool batting instead of a foam layer.

Edge Support

Nest Signature Hybrid Edge Support

Our sleep testers evaluated the edge support of the All Latex Mattress by sitting on and lying down near the edge of the bed. The mattress performed well in terms of edge support, but could be better. Heavier people might feel at risk of roll-off when sitting or lying near the edge of the bed.

Edge support is important because it affects how much of the surface of a mattress is usable. Some sleepers might not feel comfortable using the outer edges of the bed for fear that they will risk rolling off the bed when the edges bend or buckle. Latex beds generally have stronger edge support than foam, but not as much edge support as innerspring and hybrid mattresses.

Noise

The Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress is virtually silent. Both our internal and external testers reported that they heard almost nothing in response to their movement on the bed or another person getting on or off the bed. Couples who share a bed most likely won’t be bothered by any noise coming from their partner’s nighttime movements.

Latex mattresses are commonly quiet, as are all-foam beds. Generally, innerspring and hybrid mattresses create the most sound with their coil layers. Some mattress covers also create sound in response to weight or movement.

Sex

The responsiveness of the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress makes it a good mattress for sex. Generally, more responsive mattresses tend to facilitate rather than inhibit movement. Highly conforming mattresses can make changing positions awkward or difficult. Also, the quiet nature of this mattress means that sex should not result in any creaking or squeaking sounds.

Edge support is the only factor that could cause issues for those having sex on the All Latex Mattress. Since the edges could potentially fold or bend, couples might not want to use the full surface of the bed. They also might want to be careful or avoid positions that involve using the edge of the mattress.

Sleeper Ratings

Next, we’ll focus on sleeper ratings for the Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress.

The ideal firmness and thickness of a mattress varies from person to person and largely depends on a sleeper’s body weight and preferred sleep position. To avoid bias in our review, we had sleep testers of different body weights and position preferences test the Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Nest Signature Flippable Lightweight Sleepers

In the lightweight sleeper group, stomach sleepers found the most comfort on the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress. The mattress provided them with the amount of firmness needed to feel both supported and cushioned. Nearly all lightweight sleepers should opt for the medium firmness option.

Side and back sleepers in this group didn’t enjoy the mattress as much as stomach sleepers did. Some found it suitable, but the lighter a person weighed, the more likely they were to feel like the mattress was too firm for their needs. A too-firm mattress can create pressure points in side sleepers’ hips and shoulders.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Nest Signature Flippable Average Weight Sleepers

In the average weight group, stomach and back sleepers found the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress excelled at meeting their needs. The mattress provides adequate lumbar support to average weight back sleepers. The mattress is also supportive to stomach sleepers, so they don’t feel like they are sinking into the bed.

Most average weight sleepers prefer the medium firmness option of the All Latex Mattress. Some sleepers who prefer firm mattresses or are nearing 230 pounds might prefer the firm option. The Certified Organic Latex Mattress allows customers to switch between both firmness levels at any time, so they may determine which one best fits their body type and sleep style.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Nest Signature Flippable Mattress Heavyweight Sleepers

Regardless of sleep position preference, all heavyweight sleep testers enjoyed the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress. The firm option is ideal for this weight group. It provides adequate lumbar support to back sleepers, is firm enough for stomach sleepers, and promotes spinal alignment in side sleepers.

Few heavyweight sleepers prefer the medium firmness option over the firm, though personal preferences do play a role. Sleepers closer to 230 pounds and those who prefer a soft mattress might like the medium firmness option. Heavyweight sleepers who want to enjoy the firm level of support while enjoying a more conforming feel can opt for the Finch, which has a somewhat conforming foam comfort layer.

How Does the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

With so many mattresses on the market, it can be difficult to determine which model works best for you. In this section, we compare the Nest Bedding Latex Mattress and other similar models to help make your decision easier.

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress vs. Nest Bedding Natural Hybrid Latex

With a 12-inch profile, the Nest Bedding Natural Hybrid Latex is a bit thicker than the Nest Bedding All Latex Mattresses. Like the All Latex Mattresses, it comes in medium and firm options. The Natural Hybrid Latex also comes in a soft firmness option, which could make it more attractive to lightweight sleepers.

Like the All Latex Mattresses, the Natural Hybrid Latex has a responsive feel, sleeps cool, and rates highly with stomach sleepers and heavyweight sleepers. The mattress also features an unzippable cotton cover that allows customers to swap out comfort layers to change the firmness level of the mattress.

Price and construction are distinguishing factors with this mattress. The Natural Hybrid Latex features a pocketed coil and polyfoam support core, in comparison to the Dunlop latex support cores of the All Latex Mattresses.

Read our full Nest Bedding Natural Hybrid Latex Mattress Review.

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress vs. Nest Bedding Organic Hybrid Latex

The Nest Bedding Organic Hybrid Latex Mattress is most similar to the Certified Organic All Latex Mattress. Both have a GOTS-certified cotton cover that can be unzipped, which allows customers to switch out comfort layers. Both also have a wool batting comfort layer and a GOTS-certified latex comfort layer. The hybrid differs in that it features a pocketed coil rather than latex support core.

There are some key differences between the Organic Hybrid Latex and the Certified Organic All Latex Mattresses. In addition to medium and firm options, the Organic Hybrid is also available in a softer firmness level called “plush.” The Organic Hybrid costs hundreds of dollars less than the Certified Organic Latex in each size. Finally, the Organic Hybrid measures 13 inches thick, so it has an above-average profile and would require deep-pocket sheets.

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress vs. Nest Bedding Signature Hybrid

The primary difference between the Nest Bedding Signature Hybrid and the All Latex Mattresses is that the Signature Hybrid doesn’t contain latex layers. Instead, it features memory foam and polyfoam comfort layers atop a pocketed coil support core. As a result, the Signature Hybrid feels a bit more conforming than the All Latex Mattresses. Although it has memory foam, phase change material in the cover keeps it temperature neutral.

Sleep tester ratings reveal differences in which groups of people prefer which bed. While heavyweight sleepers of all position preferences rate the All Latex Mattress highly, lightweight sleepers tend to prefer the Signature Hybrid. Similarly, stomach sleepers find more comfort on the All Latex Mattress, but side sleepers tend to prefer the Signature Hybrid. The Signature Hybrid costs significantly less than both the Finch and Certified Organic Latex Mattresses.

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress vs. Zenhaven

Like the Certified Organic All Latex Mattress by Nest Bedding, the Zenhaven is an eco-friendly, all-latex mattress that offers two firmness options within one bed. Rather than unzip the cover and swap the order of comfort layers, as is the system with the Certified Organic All Latex Mattress, sleepers can flip the Zenhaven to change its firmness level.

Customers might prefer one mattress over the other because of their differing firmness levels. The lower firmness level of the All Latex Mattress is 5 out of 10, compared to 4 for the Zenhaven. However, the higher firmness level of the All Latex Mattress is 7 out of 10, which is the same as the Zenhaven. Average-weight and back sleepers rated the Zenhaven highest, while heavyweight and stomach sleepers preferred the Nest Bedding All Latex.

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress vs. Awara

The Awara Mattress is a hybrid mattress made with a Dunlop latex comfort layer and a pocketed coil support core. Like the Certified Organic All Latex Mattress by Nest Bedding, the Awara contains GOLS-certified latex, wool, and an organic cotton cover. The Awara rates 6 out of 10 or medium-firm, puting it between the 5 and 7 firmness options offered by the Nest Bedding All Latex Mattress.

Like the All Latex Mattress, the Awara rates highly with heavyweight sleepers. It also shares similar characteristics of being temperature neutral and more responsive than conforming. Price is a major differentiating factor between the two beds. The Awara is more affordably priced, selling for hundreds less than the Finch or Certified Organic All Latex Mattress in all sizes.

Read our full Awara Mattress Review.

Nest Bedding Latex Mattress vs. EcoCloud

The EcoCloud is a latex hybrid mattress by WinkBeds. Like the All Latex Mattress from Nest Bedding, the EcoCloud has a cotton cover over wool and latex comfort layers. The support core, however, is made of pocketed coils. The use of pocketed coils increases the edge support of the bed while decreasing the price. The EcoCloud is priced nearly identically to the Finch, which is less than half the cost of the Certified Organic All Latex Mattress.

The EcoCloud comes in one firmness option, which is 5-6 out of 10 on the firmness scale. This firmness level is comparable to the medium option offered by Nest Bedding. Heavier sleepers who want a firm option prefer the All Latex Mattresses from Nest Bedding. The EcoCloud has an above-average profile at 13 inches and will require deep-pocket sheets, which is another way in which it differs from the All Latex Mattress.
