Nectar vs. Puffy – Our 2022 Mattress Comparison Guide

Written by Tuck Staff

The Bottom Line.

  • The Puffy has a softer feel than the Nectar and a slightly lower firmness rating.
  • Both mattresses suit a variety of sleeper types, but the Nectar is better for those over 230 lbs.
  • The Nectar has a longer sleep trial at 365 nights.

Nectar vs. Puffy Mattress Overview

Nectar vs. Puffy Mattress Overview

Nectar Sleep was founded in 2016 and offers one mattress for sale, the flagship Nectar Mattress. This 12-inch memory foam model uses excellent materials for a durable mattress with an estimated lifetime of 6-7 years.

A high-density polyfoam support core offers a medium (6 out of 10) firmness level which appeals to most sleepers, particularly back sleepers below 130lbs or above 230lbs. The foam comfort and transitional layers provide good motion isolation and contouring. The top memory foam layer is infused with gel for a cooler sleep compared to other memory foam mattresses. Overall, people of all sleep types and weights enjoy the Nectar, and stomach sleepers below 130lbs are the only group for whom it is rated less than “good”.

Puffy was launched in 2017, and their flagship Puffy Mattress is a 10″ memory foam mattress which uses three layers of softer-than-usual foam. The 6″ high-density polyfoam support core has slightly more flexibility under weight than many other memory foam mattresses, a trait which is accentuated by the two comfort layers. These layers — the first a gel foam, the second a temperature-resistant polyfoam — also allow for a much cooler sleep than traditional memory foam mattresses.

Sleepers under 230lbs will enjoy the Puffy regardless of their sleep style, but side sleepers under 130lbs may not receive enough support. On the other hand, the softer surface does not offer adequate support for people over 230lbs; across the board, the mattress is only rated as “fair” in these categories.

Note: In addition to the Puffy Mattress, Puffy also offers the premium Puffy Lux model. This page compares only the Nectar and Puffy flagship mattresses.

Although the Nectar and Puffy mattresses appear similar upon first glance — both are memory foam options with a medium firmness level — there are significant differences which will determine the mattress which is right for you.

Sleep Position Ratings

The Nectar Mattress

Medium firm mattresses, particularly those which score 6 out of 10, are often in a “sweet spot” which appeals to a wide range of sleep types and weights. Nearly all reviewers found that the Nectar offers a good balance between comfort and support, particularly for side and back sleepers.

However, stomach sleepers who are lighter than 130lbs may find the mattress does not have enough sink to be comfortable. Due to the top layer of gel-infused memory foam, the Nectar sleeps slightly cooler than traditional memory foam mattresses.

The Puffy Mattress

As the Puffy Mattress features softer-than-usual memory foam, it offers excellent comfort to sleepers below 230lbs but is not appropriately supportive for those above 230lbs. This is true across the board, with the mattress earning a “good” rating or higher for sleepers below this weight but only a “fair” rating for sleepers in a heavier weight category.

The only category which earned a “very good” is side sleepers below 130lbs, as the softer surface provides contouring and comfort around joints and pressure points. The Puffy is also very appealing to people who tend to sleep warm, as it features two temperature-regulating comfort layers: gel foam, and temperature-resistant polyfoam.

Our Recommendations

Choose the Nectar if...

  • You are a back sleeper above 230lbs or below 130lbs
  • You find ordinary memory foam to be slightly too warm
  • You enjoy medium-firmness memory foam
  • You are part of a couple with mixed sleep styles

Choose the Puffy Mattress if...

  • You are a side sleeper under 130lbs
  • You are under 230lbs and enjoy a soft, contouring mattress
  • You find ordinary memory foam to be very warm
  • You require shipping to Canada

How Is the Nectar Mattress Built?

Nectar uses high-quality materials which are CertiPUR-US®-Certified, a guarantee that they are non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. Due to these excellent materials, we estimate that the Nectar has a 6-7 year lifetime. The mattress’s 7-inch support core is made from high-density polyfoam, which combines with the comfort and transitional layers to offer a medium, 6 out of 10 firmness rating.

The 3-inch comfort layers is made of gel memory foam, while the 2-inch transitional layer is a dense polyfoam material. People who find ordinary memory foam to be slightly too warm will appreciate these two layers, as they counteract some of the heat from the Nectar’s contouring.

In addition to temperature regulation, the Nectar also offers good motion isolation and better-than-average edge support for a memory foam mattress. (There are some users who indicate that this edge support degrades over time.)

How Is the Puffy Mattress Built?

Customers concerned about memory foam toxins will be relieved to know that the materials in Puffy mattresses are CertiPUR-US®-Certified as non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. At 10″ the mattress has a slightly lower profile than the Nectar, partially due to its lower number of layers: one 6″ support layer made of high-density polyfoam, as well as two 2″ comfort layers made of temperature-resistant polyfoam and gel memory foam.

Because Puffy uses foams with less density and less firmness than some other models, these two layers still provide plenty of softness and contouring. On the downside, sleepers above 230lbs may find that the foam degrades more quickly than firmer materials.

Both of Puffy’s comfort layers are temperature-regulating, leading to a much cooler sleep experience when compared to most memory foam mattresses. However, as this is due to regulation rather than active cooling, it still makes for a warm and cuddly winter option. The Puffy also has an excellent rating for its motion isolation.

Nectar Sleep Trial, Warranty, and Delivery

  • Sleep Trial 365-night with 30-day break-in period

  • Shipping Free shipping within contiguous U.S.

  • Warranty Lifetime

  • Made In USA

  • Trial Period Details

Nectar offers a 365-night sleep trial for the Nectar Mattress.

Nectar’s 365-night trial period does not begin until you have had the mattress in your home for 30 days. This gives the mattress a chance to regain its shapes and for you to adjust to the new surface, so returns cannot be initiated until this period is over. The following 365-day period is long enough for you to develop a real understanding of how your mattress sleeps across the seasons, as well as discovering if it provides enough support and comfort after exercise or while recovering from injuries.

Customers who choose not to keep their mattress are offered a full refund (minus any white glove delivery charges), and Nectar will collect your mattress for free before delivering it to be recycled, disposed of, or donated locally. There is no need for you to keep any packing materials in case of a return.

  • Warranty

    Nectar offers a lifetime warranty.

Customers who desire a strong warranty for their mattress will be pleased to know that Nectar offers lifetime support. They call this their “Forever Warranty”, and it covers a limited, industry-standard range of manufacturing defects (for the foam itself and the integrated cover), as well as any impressions which are 1.5″ or deeper. For the first ten years, the company will replace your defective mattress with no fees. Beyond that, they charge two $50 fees unless the problem is purely a manufacturing defect.

As we estimate this durable mattress to have a lifetime of 6-7 years, the 10-year free period will be more than adequate for most people. Supporting your mattress incorrectly will void the warranty, and it does not cover normal wear-and-tear, damage, normal foam softening, misuse, or changes in your comfort preference. The warranty cannot be transferred and any replacement mattress will fall within the original warranty.

    How is the Mattress Shipped?

The Nectar Mattress is shipped compressed, rolled, and in a protective sleeve.

    Where Do They Ship?

Free shipping is available for customers in the contiguous U.S., but Alaskan and Hawaiian customers must pay a $150 delivery fee. International shipping is not available.

    White Glove Delivery

Nectar offers white glove delivery for a non-refundable $149 fee. Aside from your mattress, additional items have a fee of $45 each.

    Full Shipping Details

Customers within the contiguous U.S. are eligible for free shipping, while Alaskan and Hawaiian customers must pay a $150 delivery fee. (International shipping is unavailable.) Shipping is done through FedEx Ground within 1-2 days of payment; you will receive a tracking number and can expect your new mattress within 3-5 days in most cases. However, customers in Alaska and Hawaii may have a slightly longer wait, and people who choose the white glove delivery option may wait 5-7 days for their mattress to arrive. As the mattress itself ranges from 45lbs (Twin) to 105lbs (California King), consider what you can comfortably move when deciding whether to purchase white glove delivery.

    Old Mattress Removal?

If you purchase the white glove delivery service for $149, you may pay an extra $45 to have your previous mattress removed. Extra recycling fees apply in California, Rhode Island, and Connecticut.

Puffy Sleep Trial, Warranty, and Delivery

  • Sleep Trial 101-night

  • Shipping USA and Canada

  • Warranty Lifetime

  • Made In USA

  • Trial Period

Puffy offers a 101-night sleep trial for the Puffy Mattress.

Considering the importance (and cost) of finding the right mattress, customers should appreciate Puffy’s 101-night sleep trial. It’s commonly thought to take 30 days to become accustomed to a new mattress (as well as for your mattress to regain its shape post-shipping), which allows you 71 nights to decide whether or not the Puffy Mattress works for you. (Puffy does not have a mandatory break-in period, and returns are available from the start of the sleep trial.)

Customers who return their mattress will receive a full refund, and the company does not charge pick-up fees. In fact, Puffy will work with your local facilities to donate your used mattress where possible.

  • Warranty

    Puffy offers a lifetime warranty

As the Puffy Mattress features less-dense foam than some options, it may not be as durable as other memory foam mattresses. This makes the company’s lifetime warranty even more important, as they offer exchanges (with no fees) on common manufacturing and physical defects like indentations over 1.5″, sagging of more than 1.5″, and material/cover flaws like cracked zippers and unraveling seams.

For the first ten years, Puffy will replace the defective model with a new mattress. After ten years, Puffy will still repair or replace your mattress, but you can also choose the Quick Sleep option to save 50% on a new mattress while still keeping your old model. The warranty is non-transferrable, void if your mattress does not have adequate support, and does not cover ordinary wear-and-tear, damage, or normal changes to the foam.
