My Green Mattress Natural Escape Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The My Green Mattress Natural Escape is an eco-friendly hybrid model with organic cotton, organic wool, organic latex, and pocketed coils.
  • The mattress has a medium-firm feel, rating at a 6.
  • Zoned pocketed coils provide extra support for the sleeper’s midsection and around the perimeter of the mattress.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape Overview

My Green Mattress Natural Escape Overview

My Green Mattress is a division of Illinois-based Quality Sleep Shop. Quality Sleep Shop was founded in 1969 and currently produces a robust mattress line. The My Green Mattress line launched in 2007 with a focus on producing natural mattresses. My Green Mattress currently offers four main mattresses: the Natural Escape, the Kiwi, the Hope Latex, and the Pure Echo. The company also offers crib and bunk bed mattresses, mattress protectors, and latex pillows.

The Natural Escape Mattress is a medium-firm (6) hybrid model. It is constructed with a cover made from organic cotton and organic wool over a comfort layer of organic Dunlop latex and a support core of pocketed coils.

This review will give an overview of at the Natural Escape Mattress, including detailing its performance, construction, and pricing. We’ll also compare the Natural Escape to similar models and summarize My Green Mattress’ shipping, return, and warranty policies.

  • Shoppers looking for an eco-friendly option. The Natural Escape uses several materials that are certified organic, including cotton, wool, and latex.
  • People who want a mattress that lasts. Based on the Natural Escape’s quality materials, we would expect the Natural Escape to enjoy an exceptionally long lifespan. A 20-year limited warranty provides additional reassurance.
  • Heavyweight side and back sleepers. Our sleep testers rated the Natural Escape well across weight groups and sleep positions, but our side and back sleep testers who weigh over 230 pounds were the most enthusiastic.
  • Those who prefer a more responsive mattress. Latex has a natural springiness, and the coil layer adds additional bounce. This may make it easier to move around on the mattress.

Not Recommended for...

  • People who prefer to sleep “in” versus “on” a mattress. The latex comfort layer spreads compression across the surface rather than compressing directly under you, like memory foam. Because of this, the Natural Escape Mattress may appeal more to sleepers who prefer to sleep “on” a mattress rather than “in” a mattress.
  • Sleepers who are easily awoken by motion transfer or mattress noises. While the Natural Escape performed well in our motion isolation and noise tests, they are not the mattress’ greatest strengths. Light sleepers who share a bed may be awakened by their partner’s movements on this mattress.

In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

How Is the My Green Mattress Natural Escape Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Natural Escape has a soft-to-the-touch organic cotton cover. Underneath the cotton fabric, there is a layer of organic wool that is quilted into the cover. The wool layer acts as a natural fire barrier. Wool is also renowned for its ability to regulate temperature by wicking away heat and moisture.

Comfort Layers

The comfort layer consists of a 3-inch layer of organic, natural Dunlop latex with an indentation load deflection (ILD) between 22 and 24. ILD is a measure of firmness. An ILD rating in this range indicates a medium-soft to medium feel. While the overall feel of the mattress is medium-firm, the softer comfort layer adds a touch of plushness.

Support Layers

The Natural Escape’s coil support layer totals 8 inches thick. Depending on the size of the mattress, it includes 690 to 1330 coils. These coils are pocketed, which allows them to move independently of each other. The support layer is zoned, with different coil gauges in different locations to provide extra support where it’s needed.

The outer edge of the mattress uses 13.5-gauge coils. This coil gauge is thicker, providing extra support around the mattress’ perimeter.

The center third of the mattress (around the lumbar region) uses 14.5-gauge coils placed closer together. This gauge is slightly thinner than the coils used around the edge but thicker than the coils used in the rest of the mattress. This construction is designed to promote better spinal alignment by providing extra support to prevent the midsection from sinking in too deeply.

Most of the sleep surface uses 15.5-gauge coils. These are the thinnest coils used in the mattress, so they offer support with more give.

Mattress Height

The Natural Escape totals 11 inches thick, which is approximately average. The 3-inch comfort layer and 8-inch support layer are also right in the average range, allowing enough room for most sleepers to sink in without feeling the coil layer while providing even support.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Natural Escape comes in just one firmness, which falls around 6 on the 10-point firmness scale. Since this is right around the firmness most people tend to prefer, many individuals from different weight groups and with different position preferences are likely to find this firmness comfortable.

Our sleep testers experienced minimal hug from the Natural Escape and reported that they felt like they were sleeping “on” the mattress rather than “in” the mattress. This is due to latex’s low point elasticity. When weight is applied, the latex comfort layer compresses over a wider surface area rather than compressing directly underneath the weight. While this provides less hug than memory foam, it can create the feeling of floating on top of the mattress, which some sleepers prefer.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the My Green Mattress Natural Escape Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as verified owner and customer experiences with the mattress.

Durability

The Natural Escape’s quality materials and construction are likely to hold up very well over time. Natural latex is quite durable, and Dunlop latex is generally even more durable than Talalay latex. Additionally, the Natural Escape’s support layer contains 690 to 1330 individually pocketed coils, depending on the mattress size. This coil count is higher than many mattresses on the market, and mattresses with higher coil counts are often more durable.

To further improve the mattress’s longevity, we advise regularly rotating the mattress head to foot to ensure even wear. My Green Mattress recommends you do this monthly for the first three months and then once every three to four months after that.

Motion Isolation

To test for motion isolation, two of our testers lied on the Natural Escape Mattress at the same time. While one tester rolled around, the other tester felt for motion transfer across the mattress surface. The latter tester felt the Natural Escape performed well overall but noted some slight motion transfer, which can be attributed to the springiness of the latex and the bounce of the coil layer.

Our overnight testers who sleep with partners also notice some motion transfer when their partners changed position or got into or out of bed.

Off-Gassing

When our team first unpacked the Natural Escape Mattress, they noticed a very faint natural odor from the mattress’s latex and wool. They did not feel this smell was significant enough to require an airing-out period. After 24 hours, they checked again, and they could no longer detect any odor from the Natural Escape Mattress.

Pressure Relief

Our team assessed pressure relief by placing a pressure-sensing pad on the surface of the Natural Escape Mattress and asking testers from different weight groups to lie on it. The Natural Escape provided fairly even cradling, though some pressure built up around our testers’ hips and shoulders. This was particularly pronounced for our lightweight side sleepers.

Temperature Neutrality

Our testers felt the Natural Escape did a very good job staying cool by allowing their body heat to dissipate.

The wool layer quilted into the mattress’s cover helped wick heat and moisture away from our testers. Our testers also noted that the natural latex comfort layer did not trap excessive heat against their bodies like some memory foam comfort layers do. We also found that the layer of pocketed coils allowed a significant amount of airflow, further dissipating heat.

Edge Support

Our in-house testing found the Natural Escape’s edge to be very supportive. To evaluate the edge, testers from different weight groups sat near the perimeter to feel for sinkage. While our heavyweight testers noticed some very slight sinkage, all of our sleep testers felt that the edge was sturdy enough to enter or exit the bed with ease.

When our testers lied near the edge of the bed, they noted similar results. All of our testers felt the edge was stable enough to allow them to sleep near the edge without feeling like they may roll off. However, our heavyweight testers noticed a little more sinkage than our other weight groups.

The Natural Escape’s perimeter uses thicker, 13.5-gauge coils to provide this sturdy edge.

Noise

While the Natural Escape was quiet in our tests, it wasn’t silent. The coil support layer produced some creaking noises. However, our testers felt this creaking wouldn’t be significant enough to disturb most sleepers since the latex comfort layer muffled the sounds to an extent. While pocketed coils tend to wear well, it is possible that creaking may increase as the mattress ages.

Sex

The latex comfort layer and coil support layer work together to create an exceptionally responsive sleep surface. Latex regains its shape more quickly than most memory foam, which may make it easier to move across the surface of the bed. The coil core gives extra bounce, which many couples find beneficial for sexual activity. Additionally, the Natural Escape’s sturdy edge may allow couples to use the full surface area of the mattress.

The Natural Escape is also quiet, so it could lend well to discreet amorous activity. However, it is not as silent as many all-foam models, so couples with thin walls may not find the noise level ideal.

Sleeper Ratings

A sleeper’s weight, shape, and favored sleep position can play a role in how a mattress feels to them. While mattress preferences are largely subjective, we evaluated the Natural Escape Mattress with sleepers from different weight groups with different position preferences to give you a better idea of how these factors may affect an individual’s sleep experience on the Natural Escape.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

While lightweight sleepers often prefer a slightly softer mattress than the Natural Escape, our lightweight sleep testers still gave the Natural Escape solid marks across all sleep positions.

When sleeping on their sides, our lightweight testers noticed some pressure buildup around their hips and shoulders due to the mattress’s medium-firm feel, but they found the mattress relatively comfortable overall.

Our lightweight back sleepers appreciated the mattress’s even support, but they also found the mattress slightly too firm to provide the level of conforming they’d like.

The Natural Escape earned higher marks from our lightweight stomach sleepers. The medium-firm feel and zoned coil support layer provided enough support to prevent their midsections from sinking in too deeply, thus promoting better spinal alignment.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Our average weight sleep testers noted very similar experiences to those reported by our lightweight testers, giving the Natural Escape good and very good ratings.

Like our lightweight testers, our average weight side sleepers noticed some pressure buildup around their hips and shoulders. However, this was less pronounced with our average weight testers.

Our average weight back and stomach sleepers gave the Natural Escape very good ratings. They felt the comfort layer provided enough softness and conforming, while the zoned coil layer supported their hips to better align their spines.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Of all of our weight groups, our heavyweight sleep testers were the biggest fans of the Natural Escape Mattress.

When sleeping on their sides, our heavyweight testers felt the Natural Escape provided an excellent balance of conforming and support. The comfort layer cradled their curves, while the zoned support layer prevented their hips from sinking in too far.

Our heavyweight back sleepers also experienced excellent support. The latex comfort layer evenly distributed their body weight, while the zoned coil system encouraged proper spinal alignment.

Our stomach sleepers were the least enthusiastic of our heavyweight testers. While they appreciated that the zoned coil system prevented their midsections from sinking in too deeply, they felt the comfort layer over-compressed under their midsections, leading to discomfort.

Other My Green Mattress Sleep Products

How Does the Natural Escape Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

We notice subtle similarities and differences when we’re testing mattresses, but these variations may be harder to spot while you’re shopping. To give you a clearer idea of what sets the Natural Escape apart from other mattresses, we’ll compare it to five similar models.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape vs. My Green Mattress Pure Echo

The Pure Echo is another mattress model by My Green Mattress. Unlike the Natural Escape, the Pure Echo is free from latex, so it may be a good option for shoppers who have a latex allergy but want a natural mattress. The Pure Echo rates as a firm (7) mattress, while the Natural Escape is medium-firm (6).

The Pure Echo does have some notable construction similarities to the Natural Escape. Both have organic cotton and organic wool in their covers, while their support systems use pocketed coils. As a result of these similarities, we rated the Pure Echo and Natural Escape approximately equivalently for pressure relief, edge support, temperature neutrality, and noise.

However, the Natural Escape’s softer feel, higher coil count, and latex comfort layer earned it better marks for motion isolation, durability, and off-gassing.

The Natural Escape received higher ratings from our lightweight and average weight stomach sleepers, our average weight back sleepers, and our heavyweight side and back sleepers. The Pure Echo earned higher marks from our lightweight back sleepers.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape vs. My Green Mattress Kiwi

Like the Natural Escape, the Kiwi is a latex hybrid model from My Green Mattress and both have a medium-firm (6) feel. The two mattresses contain many of the same materials, including organic cotton, organic wool, organic Dunlop latex, and a coil support core.

While their constructions are similar, there are some notable differences. First, the Natural Escape’s coil layer is zoned to provide more support around the sleeper’s hips, while the Kiwi’s coil layer is not zoned. The Natural Escape also contains more coils than the Kiwi, lending to its durability.

Additionally, the Natural Escape uses a thicker layer of latex in its comfort system. This thicker comfort layer may appeal to heavyweight sleepers who want more room to sink in without interacting with the coil layer.

Sleepers who favor a flippable model may prefer the Kiwi, which is available in one-sided or two-sided versions.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape vs. My Green Mattress Hope Latex

The My Green Mattress Hope Latex is an all-latex model constructed of organic Dunlop latex and an organic wool and organic cotton cover. The Natural Escape’s coil layer earned it higher marks in our durability, off-gassing, edge support, and sex categories. However, The Hope Latex’s three layers of Dunlop latex lead our testers to rate it higher for motion isolation and noise.

Like the Natural Escape, the Hope Latex is a medium-firm (6) model. At 8 inches thick, the Hope Latex is 3 inches thinner than the Natural Escape, and it can be considered a low-profile model.

During our sleep tests, the Natural Escape received better marks from our lightweight stomach sleepers, average-weight stomach sleepers, and heavyweight side and back sleepers. However, our average-weight side sleepers preferred the Hope Latex.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape vs. Awara

Like the Natural Escape, the Awara Mattress is an eco-friendly latex hybrid model with a Dunlop latex comfort layer, a coil support system, and a cover constructed of cotton and wool. Both mattresses rate around 6 on the firmness scale, giving them a medium-firm feel. While the Natural Escape is 11 inches thick, the Awara Mattress is 13 inches thick, making it a high-profile model that may require extra deep sheets.

Their similar constructions earned both mattresses equivalent marks in our motion isolation, temperature neutrality, and sex categories. The Natural Escape rated slightly better for durability, off-gassing, and pressure relief. The Awara rated slightly better for edge support and noise.

Across all sleep positions and weight groups, the Natural Escape and Awara received very similar ratings. However, the Natural Escape had an edge with our lightweight side and stomach sleepers, while our heavyweight stomach sleepers preferred the thicker Awara Mattress.

My Green Mattress Natural Escape vs. Birch

The Birch Mattress is another eco-friendly hybrid constructed of cotton, wool, latex, and pocketed coils. One of the most notable construction differences is that the Birch Mattress uses Talalay latex, while the Natural Escape uses Dunlop latex. While both Talalay latex and Dunlop latex are very responsive and durable, Talalay latex is usually slightly more responsive, while Dunlop tends to be slightly more durable.

Our testing team gave the two mattresses similar ratings for temperature neutrality and noise. However, the Natural Escape earned higher scores for durability, motion isolation, off-gassing, pressure relief, edge support, and sex.

Rating at 6.5 on the firmness scale, the Birch Mattress is slightly firmer than the Natural Escape. Because of this firmness difference, our lightweight side and stomach sleepers preferred the Natural Escape. While heavyweight testers frequently favor firmer models, our heavyweight side and back sleepers also gave the Natural Escape higher ratings. Both models received similarly high ratings from our average-weight sleepers.
