Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a closer look at our performance ratings for the Muse Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as verified owner and customer experiences with the mattress.

Durability

The Muse has been around since 2011, giving us some time to test how well the mattress stands up to the passing of time. In general, the Muse mattress has an average lifespan of about six to eight years.

While the comfort layers feature mostly low- to medium-density foams, the polyfoam base layer is made with high-density polyfoam that delays sagging. Rotating the mattress from head to foot every 3 to 6 months can help prevent permanent body impressions from forming in the spots where sleepers usually lie.

Motion Isolation

To test whether motion transferred across the bed, we had one tester move around in bed while another tester analyzed how much disturbance the movements caused on the other side. Our sleep team found that the Muse Mattress absorbed most motion. External testers who tried the mattress at home agreed, finding that they were able to sleep through the night with minimal disruption from their sleep partner.

Memory foam is known for its ability to isolate motion by forming a close-conforming cradle around the immediate area where pressure and heat are applied. All three firmness levels of the Muse mattress have thick memory foam layers, plus an additional transition layer, to absorb motion and keep it from transferring across the bed.

Off-Gassing

Some odors were present when we first unboxed the mattress, and these lingered for one to two days. Minor off-gassing is to be expected from virtually all foam mattresses. This is not harmful, although it may bother people who are very sensitive to smell.

The Muse mattress is CertiPUR-US certified and low in volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions. Any off-gassing odors should disappear after airing out the mattress for a few days.

Pressure Relief

We used a sensory pad to evaluate pressure build-up in the Muse mattress with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences. Overall, our testers reported very good pressure relief thanks to the conforming memory foam.

Those who weigh under 130 pounds are best suited to the soft version of the mattress, while those who weigh over 230 pounds should choose the firm version to prevent excessive sagging.

While the bed received positive ratings from most of our sleep testers, some lightweight stomach sleepers, as well as heavyweight side and stomach sleepers, had trouble finding a comfortable firmness level. These groups experienced some mild pressure points in the hips and shoulders, although they still rated the mattress well overall.

Temperature Neutrality

Memory foam mattresses have a tendency to trap heat, but our sleep testers found that the Muse mattress slept fairly cool for a foam mattress. This is largely thanks to the phase change material in the cover, which helps limit heat retention.

Although the Muse has open-cell and gel-infused foams designed to pull heat away from the sleeper, the high-density polyfoam support core lacks the airflow of a hybrid or innerspring mattress. The firm version achieves the best temperature neutrality as it doesn’t allow sleepers to sink in as much, but people who have a tendency to sleep very hot may want to consider a different type of mattress.

Edge Support

Lightweight and average weight sleepers on our sleep team were able to sleep near the edge of the bed without experiencing feelings of roll-off. However, our testers found that the edges did compress considerably when sitting on the edge of the bed.

It’s common for memory foam mattresses to have weak edges, since the material inherently compresses in response to pressure. Firmer foams in the transition and support layers of the Muse prevent excessive sinkage. However, people who rely on strong edges to get in and out of bed tend to do better with mattresses that have reinforced edge support, such as hybrid or innerspring mattresses.

Noise

As we expected, the Muse Mattress produced no noise at all when bearing weight. Unlike mattresses with coils or air pumps, all-foam mattresses don’t have any squeaky or noisy components. Since the Muse Mattress is completely silent, it is suitable for even the most sensitive sleepers.

Sex

As a memory foam mattress, the Muse has a relatively slow response to pressure and is not very bouncy, making it poorly suited to sex. The edges are not capable of withstanding much pressure, which also limits the usable surface area of the bed. Our sleep team did note that it is easier to be subtle since the Muse is silent, but the lack of responsiveness and edge support makes the mattress unsuitable for the needs of most couples.

Sleeper Ratings

To test how well the different firmness levels performed for sleepers of different body types and sleeping positions, we had a range of sleep testers try the bed. In the following section, we’ll outline how our sleep team evaluated the mattress according to each sleeper profile.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Our lightweight side sleepers were very comfortable on the soft version of the Muse mattress, which contoured closely to alleviate pressure points while keeping the spine aligned. Back sleepers also found that both the soft and medium versions of the mattress gave adequate spinal support and prevented pressure points from forming.

Stomach sleepers had a harder time finding a firmness level that was just right, as the soft version allowed the hips to sink in too far and the medium version was a little firm. However, most were fairly satisfied with the medium version.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Thanks to the multiple firmness levels available, all the average weight sleepers on our testing team were able to find a comfortable option with the Muse mattress.

Side sleepers generally preferred the softer version, as it formed a conforming cradle that cushioned the hips and shoulders. Back sleepers leaned toward the medium, which provided a good balance of pressure relief and lumbar support. The stomach sleepers in our average weight group found that both the medium and firm versions kept the hips in alignment with the rest of the body to prevent back pain in the morning.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Heavyweight individuals tend to sink further into a mattress, which is why foam mattresses often fail to provide the support needed to keep them aloft. However, back sleepers on our testing team were pleasantly surprised with the firm version of the Muse mattress, which was firm enough to keep the spine aligned without causing pressure points.

Side sleepers found the firm version a little too firm, and experienced a little too much sinkage in the medium version. Likewise, stomach sleepers had some slight discomfort in the hips, which sunk in too far even in the firm version. However, the Muse still performed better than most foam mattresses for the heavyweight sleeper group, thanks to its robust support layer.
